Questions about private tutors

I apologise in advance if this isn't the right place to post this and if it's a bit all over the place.

At least to me, it seems like quite a lot of people have tutors down south in Vic and Nsw?
Where I live (FNQ), having a tutor seems really rare. I've only ever known one person who has received private tutoring and they got an OP 2 recently. My school, though they say that they're a well performing school academically (oof, they're a bit pretentious..), are pretty much average. The median OP has been around 10. Only a good handful of senior teachers (around 5..) understand the ATAR system well and have said that other teachers don't seem to be doing too well. So, next year, I will most likely get a teacher who slacks off too much and falls behind. It seems like to do well (up here in QLD at least), is to hit the jackpot in finding a great private tutor or study 7+ hours a day after school.

In saying this, should I get a private tutor IF I ever manage to find one and are they really a huge benefit?
Are my chances of a good atar gone, or can I get by with my subjects w/o a tutor well? Can I do well with only self study?

I don't think it is a dichotomy of either getting a private tutor or studying 7+ hours after school to do well. There are plenty of different ways for students to do well. Firstly, if you are studying 7+ hours after school consistently you are probably studying wrong.

However, yes I agree most of the schools (at least that I know of in Victoria) that do "well" at least with regards to ATARs and study scores are run on kids getting tutoring.

In saying this, should I get a private tutor IF I ever manage to find one and are they really a huge benefit?
I would say overall they would bring a net positive to students but there will be definitely students that don't benefit. E.g. becoming complacent, despising it (because they are forced), or without a tutor they have the have the abiltiy to still do well.

Are my chances of a good atar gone, or can I get by with my subjects w/o a tutor well? Can I do well with only self study?
There are plenty of students who do well without a tutor

Whether or not private tutoring is beneficial to you is dependent on a lot of things so it's hard to make a statement on whether it'll be "worth it" for you.

I went to a school where getting tutoring was basically unheard of but in some other Victorian schools tutoring was very commonplace.

I didn't get any tutoring and got a 98.30 ATAR so even in Victoria where tutoring is more common it was still possible to do well without a tutor.

That being said,  some people do find it highly beneficial.  If you do pursue tutoring, I would be very cautious about ensuring that any tutoring you do get is from tutors who follow the new syllabuses & understand the ATAR system as well as the subject content.
