New university - FU Australia

The governing Councils of Monash University and the University of Ballarat have decided to proceed with the proposal for the Monash Gippsland campus to join forces with the University of Ballarat to form an expanded, regionally focused university from 1 January 2014.

The initiative brings together the skills and expertise developed in Gippsland, Ballarat and the western regions of Victoria to give students access to a wider range of courses and to better support students, business, industry and community.

Basically legislation has just been introduced to change the University of Ballarat's name to Federation University Australia. Let that sink in for a moment. FU Australia.

Obviously their marketing team consists of 4 year olds who don't understand what those letters mean. Lolz will be had.

Student 1: Oh, I'm starting my course in X at University of Y.
Student 2: Oh that's awesome!
Student 1: What about you bud?
Student 2: I'm going to study Bachelor of Z at FU.
Student 1: Asshole.

This is amazing.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-09-06/university-of-ballarat-becomes-federation/4939744 "Minister for Higher Education, Peter Hall, believes it will become known as Fed Uni." Yeaaah....... he must be deluding himself.

Even better pronounce the "FU" as "foo".

Quote from the article:
"There has been some discussion about initials of the new University, FU, but the Minister for Higher Education, Peter Hall, believes it will become known as Fed Uni.

"I think in time to come this will be abbreviated and become well known and a respected brand not only across Victoria but nationally and internationally as well," he said"

I had a good laugh at this because it sounds like someone's pointed out what "FU" refers to, but they're adamant it won't make a difference! How would it become respected if its "FU" uni. I mean, people would just use it as a joke and say it to refer to that can't be bothered with uni (I can't obviously use the F part in this context for fear of being banned from the forum)

I knew about the Monash + Ballarat Uni thing.
Can't believe they'd name it something like that =.=
"Federation" isn't even a meaningful enough name that you'd be willing to look past the initials.

http://www.abc.net.au/local/audio/2013/06/28/3791847.htm They list a bunch of other names they considered in the audio interview. I can see why they didn't go for one of the options of naming it after someone (Nellie Melba, John Flynn, Henry Lawson, Vida Goldstein etc.) and they explain why they didn't want something that mentions a geographical location (guessing to keep the possibility of future expansion open) but they also mentioned Eureka University as one of the choices.

I'd be interested to see why they rejected Eureka University. I would have thought that would have been a pretty good choice over FU Australia (or University of Regional Victoria which was the other option they narrowed it down too), not to mention that it'd still have somewhat a connection with the Ballarat name.

In all honesty, I'd probably still laugh at Eureka University haha

But URV would have been pretty good, no? At least better than the current option...

How does no one ever notice mistakes like this?
I mean, it happens constantly. Don't people ever run it by someone else and ask "Hey, does this sound right to you?"

it seems to me that you guys are acting like 4 year olds. You can eventually make a joke about anything that you don't like and be immature. Just if some person's name can be made fun of, would you ask them to change it as well?
