Title: Epic Pens for 2014 Exams
Post by: DJA on September 23, 2014, 09:46:43 pm
Dedicated to Epic Pens

Considering this thread has been long overdue as evidenced by continual discussion in Class of 2014! :D, and from multiple users: anna.xo, AngelWings, LiquidPaperz and many others - as well as answering this question a million times :)
I thought I'd step up and create the thread for continual discussion!

Get ready to contribute your favourite pens that you use for exams and the like.

I'll go first:

These jet streams are the most comfortable and smoothest pens ever :) Highly endorsed if you're writing all the time - for say Lit and English

Yep these jetstream pens are super smooth and you can get them at most newsagents. I haven't seen the ones that DJA posted, since the ones in the newsagents look like this, although I'm assuming they are the same smoothness?
The only drawback is they are pretty expensive and in my experience run out pretty quickly

Edit: Just out of interest do people here use regular or mechanical pencils when doing Maths exams?

Thanks DJALogical.

I recall someone (won't state names in case I get it wrong) stating that Open Day pens from universities are very good. I personally loved one that I got as a freebie at a school expo a couple of years back. University of Melbourne's free pens are generally good, but for short time frames. e.g. signing a form, writing a paragraph.

Bic and Papermate a relatively cheap, getting one of their more expensive (and justly so) 4 colour pens does a decent job, but hurt after a long time. (Bic clssic fine, Papermate Kilometrico and Inkjoy recommended by Reus, mikehepro and walkec respectively)

psyxwar has also recommended Uniball jetstream
auds recommends Pilot pens

... and I can't recall who else has said stuff, so I apologise now for all the people I have left out. (Please don't hate me.)
This is just a summary of the stuff I've seen in the Class of 2014 thread.

I personally don't recommend 4 color pens. They're generally cheaply made and not particularly good pens; you're sacrificing writing quality for convenience. tbh i think rather than buying tonnes of cheaps pens, it's better to buy some more expensive ones.

Very smooth, but seems to have a low yield. So buy more than a few if you decide to get these. Also recommend 1.0 instead of 0.7.

1. Uniball Jetstream 101
2. Pilot G-2
3. Pilot Super Grip

That's my setup.

do 1mm and 0.7mm pens have a big difference, is there a preference of one over the other?

I know with mechanical pencils i prefer 0.5mm (http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/pentel-120-a3-mechanical-pencil-0-5mm-with-leads-pexa315hb)

Thanks

I found one of these in my desk in Lit in red. Best red pen I own - I'm going to buy some of these for exams because all my kilometricos are starting to run out.

Also Bic Smooth Rollers are pretty good too - nice and inky, so use at your peril if you're a lefty
Title: Re: Epic Pens for 2014 Exams

I'm not a lefty but somehow I still end up with the whole side of my palm covered in ink after writing an exam/essay/anything with more than a paragraph  :-\

This ^^ makes my writing completely illegible since everything ends up smudged and there's little inky prints left everywhere hahaha !

Yeah, this is a problem with some of those cheaper pens that tend to bleed and smudge or if you're using gel ink pens. Maybe try out some of the Jetstream pens or a good Pilot Pen and go for the sharper points (0.7mm) so there won't be as much ink on the page

Depends on which multi pen tho :) If you're looking at this: http://www.jetpens.com/Uni-Jetstream-3-Color-Ballpoint-Multi-Pen-0.38-mm-Transparent-Black-Body/pd/10601 then its amazing. I use this one as well

Although silly because the cohort doing well means you do better ..

But if you aren't a fan of a few people in your year, you can purchase a pen for $8 where the ink only lasts for 48 hours and it disappears as if you did nothing on the paper. The shock on their face when they get their subject study scores. :P

Seriously though, everyone ensure you bring a more than adequate supply. I took 8 pens into a practice Lit. exam once, four ran out of ink, two broke, one fell down and rolled too far out of reach and we had scary invigilators so I didn't want to get out of my chair, and I actually broke the nib of one just because I was holding the pen so tightly.

Your friends may cast you looks of judgement when you walk in with a snaplock bag of 20 pens. But you will have the last laugh.

I have actually been on a quest to find the best quality pens lately. Takes deep breath.

I started with BIC four-colours and they were great for a while (circa year 10 and 11), very convenient and rarely smudging, but they're a little chunky and they crack quite frequently, which IMO makes them not worth the price.

I stuck with kilometricos for most of my VCE, as the variety of colours was great and I was able to satisfy my OCD stay organised by having black for the majority of my writing and a special colour for subheadings, correcting and ruling pages for each subject (purple for spesh, green for methods, blue for physics etc) which also happened to match with my note books. I was one colour-happy student, and everything was nice and uniform.
kilometricos are cheap and available in bulk, but I burn through them so fast and they go smudgy a lot of the time which both ruins my work and also shortens their ink-span. (side note, has anyone tested if they actually write for a kilometer? if so I'm like a marathon-writer by now)

Sick of running out of pens while on campus, I scanned the DAISO japanese $2.80 shop in QV (EVERY ITEM IS $2.80) and bought a pack of 10 pens I thought would last, but at 28c each they didn't even last one lecture and I don't even take notes in lectures. The two I tested only marked the page with ink about 60% of the time so my writing was half-invisible, and they also both literally fell apart in my hands while I was trying to write a sentence with them. Not only that, but they had that stupid clicky mechanism where you have to push a little plastic tab to pop them back into the retracted position. That snappy, plasticy sound they made just sounded so so cheap, and it hurt my ears and my pride.

Determined to redeem the name of cheap pens, I ordered two black pens from eBay that had a soft rubber back which was compatible with my touch screen. I thought "hey, pens that can also be used as a phone stylus are totally worth like one dollar each".
I was wrong. The touch screen compatibility was nice but the pen-side didn't last. They were twist-to-retract and after a few days of use that mechanism was broken and the tip wouldn't even show itself when you screwed the top. Eventually, the rubber stylus base fell off as well. Not to mention the pocket-clip things snapping within the first few classes of use.

As it stands, I'm using kilometricos and some okay black ball points my mum got in bulk for her business, but they're a little scratchy and I've run out of colourful kilometricos so my work is all black and it drains the life out of me when I work. I've nearly lost all drive to continue with my education and if I don't find a fantastic, aesthetically pleasing staple pen soon I think I'll drop out of uni and become a software engineer.

There is hope, however. My Algorithms lecturer showed us his four-colour pen which has green, blue, red and yellow and was made by google! I emailed him about its origins and he said it was a gift or attending a google conference. I'll be on the lookout for these conferences and stuff like hackathons in the future. I'm also going to Japan in January, and I know that if good, solid, colourful and practical pens exist somewhere, they will be sold in Japan.

To anyone who says worrying about pens is ridiculous, nerdy, or a waste of time, you are lucky because you clearly have a reduced sensitivity to the finer things in life such as aesthetics, comfort, colour and uniformity.

In order from the left:
1. Montblanc Meisterstück 146 M nib inked with Pelikan 4001 Royal Blue
2. Montblanc Meisterstück 146 BB nib inked with Sheaffer Skrip Black
3. Montblanc Meisterstück 149 F nib inked with Waterman Florida Blue
4. Monteverde Invincia Color Fusion M nib inked with Noodler's Apache Sunset
5. Lamy Logo EF nib inked with Parker Quink Black
6. Vintage Parker Slimfold inked with Parker Quink Blue

Gotta be careful with ink bleedthrough. FYI, VCAA paper takes fountain pen ink fine. But use a ballpoint for VCAA ID.

In uni this year though, can't be bothered worrying about smudging as much.

Fountain pens end up being more economical (not the expensive pens obviously) because you can refill them yourself rather than buying refill. A 60mL bottle of ink for less than $10 from Officeworks will last a very long time. Not to mention how much better the writing experience is. Much smoother.  ;)

Just saw this thread and thought it was an appropriate place for my problem.

I write far too small. It looks like chicken-scrawl. Even I can hardly read my own writing when I check my answers. What sort of pens will help me write bigger/more legibly? Don't want to piss away marks by the examiner getting fed up when they give up and stop trying to discern my responses.

Anyway back on topic about pens please. I wasn't going to contribute but now i feel a little guilty.

I like pens with grips because you can literally feel your bone pushing into the pen by the end of all that writing. A nice rubbery grip helps massively. You want as little resistance as possible, you dont want those ball-points which are hard to push. You want something with gel that'll glide. This is purely for comfort and speed. If you want it to look nice, you'd probably write it in cursive with a fountain pen or something..

You want as little resistance as possible, you dont want those ball-points which are hard to push. You want something with gel that'll glide. This is purely for comfort and speed. If you want it to look nice, you'd probably write it in cursive with a fountain pen or something..

I honestly hate gel pens..just because I always end up with ink all over my hand, and writing in gel just makes the rest of my work at the top smudged and hard to read, and not to mention but it leaves waaaay more ink than just a normal ballpoint.

Don't buy Bic Round Sticks. Someone at school recommended them to me, so I bought a pack.

But they feel cheap and plasticty and just horrible.

Hey everyone,

Sorry to bump the thread, but was wondering how long the jet stream pens last ...

I only bought two yesterday, used one for the english exam today. Have four more exams to go ...

Cheers :)

regardless of how long they last, you should bring another pen just in case.

No matter how many pens you have.

I run a Uniball Jetstream and a Pentel Tradio.
The Jetstream is popular for a reason - it's so smooth! The tradio is a fountain pen instead of a rollerball, so you might
get a bit more smudging and those annoying ink blots, but it's equally as smooth while being a lot more comfortable in my opinion.

Would recommend them both.

Aren't they beautiful :')

Thanks! How long do they roughly last? Just wanting to know, as I wanted to use them for my practise exams at home (because they are so 'comfortable ... so smooth' XD. But if they run out quickly I'll just use my crappy other pens.

Pilot BPS -GP in a 0.7 fine thickness, most wonderful and highly pigmented colour ever.
I'm  so glad others have pen OCD like me, yay

I found a 0.38 mm tip in Officeworks the other day... They're gel pens, so slight smudging, but they are now my favourites. <3 (particularly at only $5 a pop, everyone thinks I spent a fortune on them, though...)

I bought 4 blue Papermate pilot pens for my exams. After English today, I have about 20% ink remaining in one of them  :(

Going to use my crappy Bic ones at home and for other revision and save my Pilots because they're not all that cheap.

My Uniball Eye smudged on the thicker VCAA paper :'( Letting me down stationary, letting me down. Still love these pens though, but they're quite expensive so I use dodgy hotel pens/promotion pens etc for practice stuff at home.

I have this, used it for one of the essays yesterday and was quite good.

On the topic of gel pens, I like the uniball signo too.

Maybe not for maths + science though, I prefer Pilot G2 0.38, started using the jetstream again too and it's quite good.

Hey guys,

Sorry but I fail to see how one can be productive without a Lamy Safari Rollerball, matte black with an m63 cartridge, oh the smoothness <3 The unknown love one can have for a pen lmao, glad I'm not alone :)

Haha cheers :)

I was comfortable and secure in my cheap ass but smooth enough Bic Round Stic pens for my upcoming lit exam.. Until my teacher handed back a practice exam yesterday with "USE A DARKER PEN FOR THE EXAM" written in massive letters across the top. Anyway, did not even know you could panic over pen choice. Have learnt this.

I like really slim pens, those ones with massive rubber grips or four colours hurt my hand after a while. Whats good for that?
