Hi, what is everyone's opinion on using something like "this essay will contend/argue/delineate..."? My teacher recommends that I follow to make my contention very explicit, however I everyone I talk to says they'll murder me if I do it. What do you guys think? Thanks

hmm yeah I definitely wouldn't put that in my essay - but if your teacher says so just write that for your sacs but don't do it in the end of year exam.

Something like that isn't needed on an essay. The purpose of the essay is already known =)

Stuff like that are left for reports (scientific, history research, academic, etc).

Hi,

What kind of essay is it? Is on a novel, or a essay comparing article?

For now just responding to a text. We're studying the classic, Medea.

Does anyone have any really good, explicit examples for contentions in the introductions?

Thank you

Hi,

To answer your question, if your teacher recommends it, you should definitely use it. Your teacher corrects the SACs so you should follow her instructions. However, I don’t think you should use it in exams. Hope it helps.

Our school does moderation and cross marking, so if my teacher is passionate about "This essay will ..." but the moderator abhors it, won't there be a discrepancy in the marking?
Thanks

In this case, I recommend you to talk to other English teachers, especially the ones that will cross-mark your SAC. Ask them about including ''This essay will contend...." and see what they think. If most of them don't advise it, don't do it, otherwise follow your teacher instructions.  ;) :)
