ATAR - HSC Extension 1 Maths

Since your ATAR is calculated based on your best 10 units, how will Extension 1 Maths (1 unit) be included in, or will it no be included at all? Will my ATAR be calculated by my five best 2 unit subjects and ext maths or 4 best 2 unit subjects and ext maths?

Hey skycastle!
Welcome to the forums! :D

This is a good question. When calculating your ATAR, NESA (or UAC) considers your best 10 units. This will include all of the units you have studied, for example 12 units. When working out marks, your lowest 2 unit subject (excluding English) will be halved and matched with another 1 unit. This could be in the form of your 1 unit Extension Maths, or any other one unit from another 2 unit subject, that can increase your ATAR. In some cases, Extension 1 Maths may not be counted if there is another unit with a higher value, hence lead to a higher ATAR.

For Example:
If someone scored, 40/50 in Extension 1 Maths, but scored 70/100 for Chemistry (which in this example is the lowest subject mark of the entered units), this 2 unit subject can be halved (=1 unit for Chemistry).

Therefore, the 40 in Extension 1 Maths (1 unit) can be matched with a 35 in Chemistry (1 unit). This will result in a final mark of 75, instead of the original 70 (<-- meaning your ATAR will be increased).

[40+35=75 (2 units)] > [70 (2 units)]

I hope this makes sense!
