Title: Algorithmics 3&4 Pls answer quick
Post by: Joshua Smith 69 on July 29, 2018, 10:46:39 pm
Hi Guys, I am thinking of doing Algorithmics next year as a 3&4 subject. I haven't done 1&2 and I have no background in software development or coding. I have complete 1&2 methods and I got A+'s for nearly every SAC and am I am doing 3&4 Methods and am finding it quite easy to understand and apply.

My questions are:
- Do I NEED an understanding of coding to do Algorithmics 3&4?
- Is it possible to do 3&4 Algorithmics without having done 1&2?
- Can I self-educate myself on the basics of coding during the summer holidays to prepare myself for Algorithmics 3&4?

Hello there :) Quick and straight to the point answers for you:

- Do I NEED an understanding of coding to do Algorithmics 3&4?
Would be beneficial, but definitely not necessary. Your maths methods knowledge is suitable as per prerequisite.

- Is it possible to do 3&4 Algorithmics without having done 1&2?
There is no Algorithmics Unit 1 and 2 :) Keep in mind this is a HESS subject (Higher Education Scored Study), meaning it's at the same level as a 1st or 2nd year computer science subject at university level.. so the difficulty is definitely "up there" and not in the same ballpark as other VCE subjects. You'll need to put effort and time into this, that's guaranteed.

- Can I self-educate myself on the basics of coding during the summer holidays to prepare myself for Algorithmics 3&4?
Yes. Look into "Edgy" and "Python".

All the best :)
