Title: Lyrics of the Week - What are yours?
Post by: brenden on July 24, 2017, 09:04:36 pm
THREAD RULES:

1. You can only post lyrics in this thread once every 7 days! You must think carefully about what lyrics desperately need to get out into the world and post with consideration. Throughout the week, if lyrics start burning you - you'll have to write them down in preparation for the next week. Feel free to comment on other lyrics and make other posts - but you can only post lyrics once a week!

2. You can only post one set of lyrics at a time, for a maximum of one 'section' of lyrics. I.e., you can't paste two verses, or a chorus and a verse - be  SELECTIVE! Posting one set of lyrics at a time means you can't post two lines from Song A, and another two lines from Song B.

3. Link the song you're referencing.

4. Feel free to make comments on the lyrics you're sharing explaining why you love them so much, or what you think the genius behind the lyrics are. This is optional - feel free to just paste lyrics and leave!

Wanna be alone
Wanna be surrounded
Wanna be transient
Wanna be grounded

But all the dissonance disappears from me
When you drape an arm across my knee
Intentionally lazily

Here's a link to the song.

These lyrics hit me really heavily every time I hear them - "need to catch my breath" kind of heavy.

There's something so painful about wanting two different things at the same time - alone, surrounded. It's easy to feel crazy or like a lunatic when you want two different things. It can be really confusing. I feel like there's two of me sometimes... I've never had these feelings so incredibly encapsulated. Just four simple lines; incredible.

There's also something incredibly sweet about all of these thoughts (non-physical) being completely eviscerated by simple touch (physical). It's like these lyrics set up intense frustration and then give you relief straight away. I just love it.

(And I'm really mad that I have to wait 7 days to post my next lyrics  >:( >:( >:( )

It flickers, flickers
Who cares when someone's time runs out?
If a moment is all we are
We're quicker, quicker

One More Light - Linkin Park

All of the songs by Linkin Park mean so much more on an emotional level in light of Thursday's event. It only just hit me today :(

Edit: LP was the one band that I always went back to when I got tired of new music that came out. Unfortunately, I never got to see them live (had the chance 7 years ago but was 'too young' :( )

Had this playing whilst studying this afternoon and y'know it kinda hit me hahah.

Karmin - Didn't Know You

It's short but I also think it's beautiful. Sometimes you have to take risks without knowing what will happen, and sometimes you feel lost or like nothing's going how you wanted, but it can be the catalyst for something unexpected or beautiful that couldn't have happened otherwise.

I don't want to hold you
I don't want to see you
Even birth can bear disgrace
I don't want to hold you
I don't want to see you
Or even the smile upon your face

Demons & Wizards -- Down Where I Am

This song is mostly sung in a soft, ballad-like manner. It's about a subject not normally sung about -- Down's syndrome. Specifically, a parent's reaction upon seeing their newborn has Down's syndrome. This particular section of the song is about the parent both rejecting and blaming the child. It's so much worse how it describes that the child is smiling too.

By themselves, the lyrics aren't overly powerful. However, when you listen to the song, it just makes you feel so so sad. It's a very well-crafted ballad, and I implore everyone here to try it.

One of my favourite artists growing up. I hadn't listened to them in years, but it was a big part of my childhood -- definitely hit hard. I'm sure their music helped many teenagers through crappy times. Despite the memes making fun of that era of music, they really captured the angst a lot of teens were feeling -- both now and back then.
Holy shiiiiiiit. Music that's confronting is music done right. Wow.
Most definitely. Aargh, now I wish I could share more, but I must wait another 10,057 minutes. Once you get past the 'surface' metal bands (like, same guitars, crap bass, heavy drums, crappy screaming, no cleans/growls) that everyone knows into some of the subgenres, you can find some fantastic music, some of which deal with some pretty heavy issues or make you feel something heavy. Then when you get metal bands mixing with ballads, you get stuff like this. I'll definitely be back in a week to share some more.

I don't really like to read into lyrics too much, but this felt appropriate in studying for trials, and how it'll all be over soon. This song has an incredible intensity that resonates with me so well for some reason.

Linkin park - Heavy

I don't like my mind right now
Stacking up problems that are so unnecessary
Wish that I could slow things down
I wanna let go but there's comfort in the panic
And I drive myself crazy
Thinking everything's about me
Yeah I drive myself crazy
'Cause I can't escape the gravity

RIP Chester Bennington

These lyrics represent the struggles that people face, especially those with mental illness.   I love these lyrics because it represents the struggles I have faced in times of hardship and it's definitely a song that's got me through in troublesome times <3.

THAT'S THE WAY IT'S GONNA BE LITTLE DARLIN'
WE'LL BE RIDING ON THE HORSES, YEAH

Y'all are lucky to have a Melbourne Victory fan in the house.

In all seriousness, probably like every part of Poet by Bastille, but in particular this part:
Quote
I have written you down
Now you will live forever
And all the world will read you
And you will live forever
In eyes not yet created
On tongues that are not born
I have written you down
Now you will live forever

My Last Song to Jenny | The Avett Brothers:

I want to live,
And I want you to live,
Happy and free.

But I don't know how,
To separate the now,
From what used to be.

To elaborate:

This was really my first (and hopefully only) break-up song. My first girlfriend and I got together in mid 2010 (Year 10), and broke up in mid 2012 (Year 12).

I initiated it, really, because I was struggling a fair bit at the time. I thought the relationship was contributing considerably. So we broke up, it was hard, and I thought I made a mistake. I didn't feel any better - in fact, I felt very much worse - and I realised that it probably wasn't the relationship that was making me feel poor.

And I don't think it was, even still.

After the break-up, there was a period of really good friendship (basically the rest of Year 12), and we flirted with getting together again. Pretty sure I was keener on it than she was, which was pretty fucked, and definitely not fair on her in the slightest.

Anyway, these lyrics speak to me due to the above. I wanted nothing more than for her to be happy, but it was hard at times knowing that we were no longer in a relationship. And that I'd essentially fucked it.

I think I just found my new spotify playlist right here :)

"Life can get you down so I just numb the way it feels
I drown it with a drink and out-of-date prescription pills
And all the ones that love me they just left me on the shelf
No farewell
So before I save someone else, I've got to save myself
And before I blame someone else, I've got to save myself
And before I love someone else, I've got to love myself"

Link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXM0JdAwabU

These lyrics are a gentle reminder that sometime it's okay to put yourself first, that it's okay to have some 'me time'. Something which is often more than not forgotten during the mad rush of Year 12 or VCE in general...

Can't wait to check back in 7 days to see what new song recommendations are!

These are from the song Bapa, by Dr G. Yunupingu*. He passed away this week at the age of 46. In spite of his enormous fame worldwide (he'd been on the cover of Rolling Stone, had performed for Barrack Obama and the Queen twice and also sang on stage with Sting after the Paris terrorist attacks) he died a death all too familiar to indigenous Australians. As a child, he was afflicted with hepatitis B and this week eventually passed away due to renal failure secondary to diabetes. By our own community's standards, dying at the age of 46 of kidney disease due to diabetes is extremely rare; however, it is not at all uncommon in Indigenous communities, which already have a much higher rate of diabetes.

These lyrics are really important to me, because it was because of him that I begun to realise just how much cultural heritage this country has. He sings in yolŋu matha, which is an indigenous language with nearly 5000 speakers, many of them first language only. These communities, and their cultures, are just about as remote from our own down here in Melbourne as anywhere else in the world. That he was able to bring his culture to the rest of the world was an enormous achievement and that so few Australians are even aware that these communities exist, let alone having any idea about what languages they speak etc, is a sad indictment on our knowledge of our own country.

*I've refrained from using his full name because, in Indigenous culture, it is deeply offensive to do so after someone has passed away. This is why there are sometimes warnings before films to say that a show may depict images of indigenous people who have died. It's also why you won't have heard his music played and will have seen his face blurred if you managed to catch a news item about his death.

Okay, it's been a week. I listen to a lot of music, and the entire time, I've been trying to think of what lyrics are the best. Some of them told stories, and some of them dealt with issues such as alcoholism and childhood abandonment -- heavy stuff. However, I recently listened to one song, which is absolutely perfect. Not only are the lyrics meaningful, but the song itself is quite important. However, for this, we're going to need some context.

I've only ever been in one relationship. Now, before we dated, we were pretty much best friends. This friendship was originally founded after we discovered we shared a love of folk metal (and other metal subgenres not overly popular in Australia), so as you can imagine, we listened to a lot of music together (this is important for later). Now, if we fast forward to the start of 2017 (four years later), we had just broken up. Not only did I lose my girlfriend, but I lost my best friend, and frankly I lost her parents too (I was very close with both of them), so I was understandably devastated. However, I couldn't find solace in my music anymore -- every metal band I listened to we had spent hours listening to together, discussing, dancing together to, or seeing live. So, no more metal for me.

Perhaps a few weeks later, I turn on the radio, and I hear 'How To Save A Life' -- The Fray. Now, the lyrics that really stuck with me:

I know the story the song is based upon. However, I also know that The Fray really enjoy different interpretations of their own song, so I hope mine isn't too silly. Essentially, when I listened to this song, it's from her point of view.

Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend -- Simple enough. She's trying to pinpoint why everything went to shit. After all, at the very base level, I was her best friend.
Somewhere along in the bitterness -- This is discovering the reason. All the factors for the split lead back to my depression (which I was suffering from for the majority of our time together). Bitterness=depression.
And I would have stayed up with you all night -- This is the part of her that always said she would have done anything to help me.
Had I known how to save a life -- However, she only could have helped me if she knew what to do, and I wasn't very cooperative with this. She couldn't do anything because there was nothing to do.

This song really gave me a new perspective on the whole situation. I finally saw how hard it was for her -- not just the breakup, but dating a depressed person who refused help. After this, a lot of the resentment I was holding was quelled, which is obviously fantastic. It holds a long of meaning to me, and I wished to share. A bit sappy, a bit emotional, but I think this really shows how important music can be.

Also, please ignore that this is at 2am and a bit rambly -- I've never been the most eloquent of people, especially when I can't sleep. I should also note that I managed to separate my feelings from the music I used to love, so I do indeed listen to it again.

:)

Oh my gosh! I remember this song, a song which was played during my childhood. Yeah the lyrics definitively are one which I think many of us can relate to

I've also been thinking about what lyrics to share this week and I figured out early what song it was going to be from - the rest of the week was trying to figure out which lyrics from that song to share. It was a near impossible task - it's an amazing song, I think.

Calebark - potentially your experience will relate, perhaps it won't.

People can listen here.

And you can read the rest of the lyrics here.

Context

My first serious relationship ended in April this year. We were together from soon after I turned 16 to soon after I turned 22. It was a very peaceful breakup. There was no 'incident', no animosity, no destructive behaviours. We just sat down to talk about the future and mutually decided it was the right time to no longer be together.

The song my lyrics come from this week is called Walk You Home... The artist says about the lyrics: "So I wrote you the song that you deserve to let you know / You will always be my first and most wonderful love". So, it's a letter to his ex-girlfriend.

Essentially, the first verse talks about how amazing she is. The second verse is him saying goodbye. It's a fucking amazing song. Unfortunately, I can't encapsulate that in only a small section of lyrics :( :(  but the lyrics that I've chosen are:

Quote
And it's gone now, you wouldn't even know it was there
But you'd get lost tryna navigate the moments we've shared
Like when we held each other's hands and we said goodbye
Tears streaming out our eyes like somebody had died

Now it's the day after your birthday and it's pouring outside
And I'm catching arrow tips with my fingers down the phone line

The first four lines fuck me up... The last two lines are hectic because "it's the day after your birthday" - for me, the day after my ex-girlfriend's birthday would have been our six year anniversary this year (we broke up after 5 years and 11 months)... just one of those weird things that come up in music sometimes like, day after your birthday??? why did you write that bro???? what is significant about that for you, the artist??? WAS YOUR ANNIVERSARY THE DAY AFTER HER BIRTHDAY AS WELL?????

Quote from: The Avett Brothers
So you want to be in love like the movies.
But in the movies, they're not in love at all.
And with a twinkle in their eyes,
They're just saying their lines.
So we can't be in love like the movies.

Now in the movies, they make it look so perfect.
And in the background, they're always playing the right song.
And in the ending, there's always a resolution.
But real life is more than just two hours long.

Full song here.

Potentially stretching it a little - will try to be more selective in the future. But I think these lines really summarise the song nicely.

I like it a lot. Haven't listened to it in ages (will do now), but it came to mind this week when thinking of this thread.

The way I interpret this, it's a reflection of modern society. In movies, on Instagram, in magazines - what we see of people's lives is, selectively, the best portion. We see people's triumphs, but we don't see their struggles, and so on. So, you want to be in love like the movies - you pine for what you see. But in the movies, they're not in love at all - not everything is as it seems.

Love is difficult. Love isn't straightforward.

@Brenden (not going to quote as it's pretty big)

They're some damn good lyrics; I had a read and a listen. It's certainly applicable to myself (as I'm sure it is to a lot of people).

Just my interpretation: the birthday would obviously remind him of her. He can't talk to her on her birthday -- she'd be busy, and why would you possibly provide something negative on her birthday? But the day after, now that's fair game, and it seems like he can't get that out of his head.

Thanks for sharing -- definitely powerful.

Maybe a bit of a stretch, but don't a fair few communication apps use arrow heads (image below) to show a message has been seen? It would relate to 'down the phone line''

Mine is the single last line of Les Mis (not quite last, since it's followed by an after-death epilogue, but this is the end in my mind).

Quote
To love another person is to see the face of God...

I want a way to infuse the music into the lyrics so you can get an idea of how beautiful and perfect this is as a last climactic line to an entire musical

This line has resonated with me so much, and is often in my mind.

The whole musical is about selflessness and sacrifice in love for others, showing it in a very practical down to earth way, and this line really brings it to a climax: the highest purpose in life, the greatest enlightenment or union with God (even if you're atheist, I don't take it to mean a religious God necessarily), is to love others.

Just realised, I haven't provided my explanation behind last week's lyrics. Oops. That'll come soon.

This weeks lyrics are from Carmen by Stromae. It is in French, but the video has English subtitles so you can understand them :)

This song is all about social media and the culture around it. It also links in stuff about our consumer culture. It addresses the obsession we have with social media, how it can be toxic, and all that stuff. Super powerful.

Hard to choose a favourite part of the song, but I think these are some of my favourite lyrics:
Quote

This is the translation:
Quote
First we meet, then we follow each other
We fall apart, and we end up solo
You’d best beware!
And to all those who like your posts
Plastic smiles are often blows of the hashtag
You’d best beware!
Oh friends and followers
You’ve got it wrong, you’re just popular

Not sure that I can explain these lyrics in particular. They're just really powerful, I really like how he talks about the progression of social media I guess, and that part at the end, about how the popularity you have online isn't 'real popularity'. Yeah.

Absolutely love it. And the thing is, it sounds just like a normal pop song, but it's really got a strong message behind it, and it's a bit of a social commentary.

It's everyone's favourite time of the week!

Sonata Arctica -- Caleb
Quote
Go out, create thunder, and stand right under
That old apple tree
Where dead snakes let him feed
This song is about a kid called Caleb (named after his father), and his two abusive parents. His father dies (buried under the apple tree), but his mother remains. She doesn't try to be so horrible to him, but she can't help it, as the child reminds her of the father.

I believe this part is about no matter what achievements the child makes (creating thunder), he will forever be overshadowed by his father's cruelty (hence under the apple tree).

The name of the song is just a coincidence, haha.

I just know whatever lyrics you bring out are going to floor me.

Mine for the week:

YouTube Link - "Arrogance of the Drunk Pedestrian"

Quote
And we'll keep on through the shit storm
Until the metaphors are literal
Forced screams are guttural
And we'll keep on through the shit storm
Until the metaphors, until the metaphors

When I said this is all I had I meant it

The type of lyrics that you might need the music to feel.

No explanation from me - just listen if you're interested. One of my favourite songs at the moment.

I'll keep Nick happy by quoting some Avett Brothers lyrics ;)  But nah, the full lyrics (more than music) of True Sadness have lived with me since the first time I heard it.

Quote
You were a friend to me
When my wheels were off the track
And though you say there is no need
I intend to pay you back
When my mind was turning loose
And all my thoughts were turning black
You shined a light on me
And I intend to pay you back

This speaks my gratitude for the hugeness of the support I've been given over the last couple years.  I am in great emotional debt to so many people.

Full song here.

Not sure why I'm so drawn to it but The Girl - Hellberg. No idea what the lyrics mean but it sounds like something special.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtveSk1N7Uo

[Verse 2]
Wasted moments, full of potential atonement's
An angel in disguise
But he can see her Aberdeen heart, London eyes, Glasgow bone
She's a whistle in the catacombs, a paradox

[Pre-Chorus]
He's in love with the statue in a marble block
He's in love with the girl that time forgot

Is there any significance to naming the places in the UK?

Aaaannndddd it's that time of the week again! This was the hardest choice so far for me. My runner-up was a song about how music washes away the bad experiences of the day -- I'll be sharing it in a week's time! Bring on the lyrics!

Eluveitie -- A Rose for Epona
Quote
The sky is falling on me
As your hand's turning old and weak
I'm giving myself upon to thee
A futile sacrifice gone sere
For some context, this album is set in the Gallic Wars. This song is about a Helvetian woman who, having lost everything, acuses one of her gods (Epona) of forsaking her. The lyrics show her begging for help against the Romans. You really need to hear the vocalist sing the lines to really appreciate the emotion (it's been timestamped in the link).

I saw this band live last year, and it was damn amazing! They did a special version of this song in Swiss-German.

<3 Kanye.

10.45pm: 4 tabs open and counting agonising over which lyrics to share this week after having already decided on one set like 5 days ago.

10.57pm: Have decided, and abandoned the lyrics that were decided on :O

11.05: Finished my post but deleted everything before hitting 'Preview' to go back to other lyrics.

11.19pm: Finished. (admittedly distracted heavily by the Big Bang Theory.

Lyrics are here, YouTube video here

Lyrics: Seth Sentry - Langoliers Banquet... the first four lines of the song.
Quote
Right now I'm feeling like I can't lose
I been trying to make a cheque like 1-2
But every second day I'm in a dark mood
So everything I say when I feel good is like a half truth
"Right now" some important qualifying words, here. The final two lines of this stanza hit me in the face the first time I heard them and I've thought about them often since, they just resonate so much. I feel like there can be two Brenden's sometimes and it's easy to feel dishonest and frustrated.

It's so perfect, I feel like reading the lyrics for the first time kills the 'surprise' of hearing the phenomenalness D:

I have spent the last 2 hours deciding which lyrics to post, because y'know, uni is overrated.

Initially was gonna go with Something for Nothing (Rationale), but decided on Berlin (RY X). If you're into the genre he does, RY X is a really underrated Aussie singer/songwriter.

(These lyrics are technically the whole song, but shhh)
Quote
Come down love
Berlin in the cold
All that fighting, all that snow

Sober nights
And Byron on my mind
Tell me I'm not going home
And I'll stop waiting by the phone

Bedroom floor
And silence in my blood
Sorry love I'm running home
I'm a child of sun and the stars I love

Quote
Sad hopes I'd hidden under
Tangled inside of me
You spoke like broken thunder
Deep into the center of me

I couldn't say what I was thinking
My heart shrinking
Two sad sparks blinking in the sun
Wait one minute
I had to listen for it

Chelsea Cutler's cover of Thunder Clatter (originally by Wild Cub)
I was thinking and thinking about what lyrics I'd post, and came to the realisation that I mostly focus on the feel / sounds of the songs rather than the lyrics. i finally settled on this song as I love the sounds and the lyrics are quite elegant too.
The Original is pretty good too.

Also my Song of the Week is Lilianna Wilde - Grind Me Down. The song is addictive (to me), it's calming and yet seductive. I like a range of different genres, this is just the song I'm addicted to this week :)

P.S. I didn't post last week I believe so I'm allowed to link 3 songs  ;)

It's Tuesday (just barely), so time for new lyrics!

This particular song doesn't hold any emotional significance to me, nor are the lyrics meaningful. However, it tells a story, and I'm picking them for the wonderful way in which it does.

Blind Guardian -- And Then There Was Silence
Quote
(Warning)
Fear the heat of passion, father king
(Don't let him in)
(Don't let her in)
Desire, lust, obsession
Death they'll bring
(We can't get out)
(Once they are in)

She's like the sunrise
Outshines the moon at night
Precious like starlight
She will bring in a murderous price
This song is about Cassandra, a character in Greek mythology. She was given the gift of prophecy by Apollo, but then subsequently cursed so nobody would ever believe her visions, the most notable of which was the Trojan War. This particular excerpt is Cassandra trying to warn her father, King Priam, of the Trojan Horse (described as 'she'). No matter how hard she tries, nobody will believe her of the dangers to come.

All the lyrics are pretty great in this song.  Full lyrics here:
And Then There Was Silence
Turn your head and see the fields of flames

He carries along
From a distant place
He's on his way
He'll bring decay
(Don't move along
'Cause things they will go wrong
The end is getting closer day by day)
In shades of grey
We're doomed to face the night
Light's out of sight

Since we've reached the point of no return
We pray for starlight we wait for the moon
The sky is empty
Alone in the unknown
We're getting nowhere

We have been betrayed
By the wind and rain
The sacred hall's empty and cold
The sacrifice made
Should not be done in vain
Revenge will be taken by Rome

We live a lie
Under the dying moon
Pale-faced laughs doom
Indulges in delight

It's getting out of hand
The final curtain will fall
Hear my voice
There is no choice
There's no way out
You'll find out

We don't regret it
So many men have failed
But now he's gone
Go out and get it
The madman's head it

Shall be thyne
We don't regret it
That someone else dies hidden in disguise
Go out and get it
Orion's hound shines bright

Don't you think it's time to stop the chase
Around the ring
Just stop running running
Round the ring
Don't you know that fate has been decided by the gods
Feel the distance, distance
Out of reach

Welcome to the end
Watch your step, Cassandra
You may fall
As I've stumbled on the field
Sister mine
Death's a certain thing
Find myself in darkest places
Find myself drifting away
And the other world
The other world appears

Find myself she dies in vain
I cannot be freed
I'm falling down
As time runs faster
Moves towards disaster

The ferryman will wait for you
My dear

And then there was silence
Just a voice from other world
Like a leaf in an icy world
Memories will fade

Misty tales and poems lost
All the bliss and beauty will be gone
Will my weary soul find release for a while
At the moment of death I will smile
It's the triumph of shame and disease
In the end Iliad

Raise my hands and praise the day
Break the spell show me the way
In decay
The flame of Troy will shine bright

The newborn child will carry ruin to the hall
The newborn's death would be a blessing to us all

Good choice?
Bad choice?
Out of there
You've chosen misery
Power and wisdom
You deny
Bad choice

War is the only answer
When love will conquer fear
So the judgement's been made to the fairest
The graceful says badly he fails

Warning
Fear the heat of passion, father king
Don't let him in
Don't let her in
Desire, lust, obsession
Death they'll bring
We can't get out
Once they are in

She's like the sunrise
Outshines the moon at night
Precious like starlight
She will bring in a murderous price

In darkness grows the seed of man's defeat
Jealousy
I can clearly see the end now
I can clearly see the end now
I can clearly see the end now

The thread of life is spun
The coin's been placed below my tongue

Never give up
Never give in
Be on our side
So we can win
Never give up
Never give in
Be on our side
Old moon's time is soon to come

Nowhere to run
Nowhere to hide
Nothing to lose
Like one we'll stand
We'll face the storm
Created by a man

Roar roar roar roar
Troy Troy Troy Troy

And as the lion
Slaughters man
I am the wolf
And you're the lamb

Hallowed Troy will fall
Round the walls
Faith is shattered bodies fall

Nowhere to run
Nowhere to hide
Nothing to lose
Like one we'll stand
It's all for one and one for all
We live for will be wiped out

I feel that something's wrong
Surprise, surprise they're gone
Full moon your time goes by
And new moon's still kept our of sight
We live we die

Misty tales and poems lost
All the bliss and beauty will be gone
Will my weary soul find release for a while
At the moment of death I will smile
It's the triumph of shame and disease
In the end Iliad

Raise my hands and praise the day
Break the spell show me the way
In decay
The flame of Troy will shine bright

Roam in darkness
Spread the vision
We will be lost if you truly believe
Troy in darkness
There's a cold emptiness in our hearts
That they've gone away
And won't come back

They'll tear down the wall to bring it in
They'll truly believe in the lie, lie, lie
With blossoms they'll welcome
The old foe

The vision's so clear
When day and dream unite
The end is near
You better be prepared

The nightmare shall be over now
There's nothing more to fear
Come join in our singing
And dance with us now
The nightmare shall be over now
There's nothing more to fear
The war it is over forevermore

No hope
The blind leads the blind
Carry on
Though future's denied
Mare or stallion
There's far more inside
We are in at the kill we'll cheerfully die

Misty tales and poems lost
All the bliss and beauty will be gone
Will my weary soul find release for a while
At the moment of death I will smile
It's the triumph of shame and disease
In the end Iliad

Raise my hands and praise the day
Break the spell show me the way
In decay
The flame of Troy will shine bright

Holy light shines on

So the judgement's been made
We're condemned though the trial's far ahead
The crack of doom
Father
Your handsome son is heading home

Heading home

Still the wind blows
Calm and silent
Carries news from a distant shore

Out of mind
Can't get it
Can't get it
Out of my head

Sorrow and defeat

Bloody hell, shocking that I missed Tuesday.

My lyrics for this week were easy as anything, because these are the ones I had up last week but then bailed on at the last minute. Last week's lyrics were from the same artist, in the spoiler below.
Last week's lyrics
Right now I'm feeling like I can't lose
I been trying to make a cheque like 1-2
But every second day I'm in a dark mood
So everything I say when I feel good is like a half truth

This week's lyrics come from one of my favourite songs of all time. It's from 'How Are You?', by Seth Sentry... Essentially, the song is loosely about the 'real' answers to the question "how are you?", and how annoying the question can be when it's usually used as small talk, and the person asking actually doesn't give a fuck how you are.

I've included many lines of lyrics, but highlighted in red the lines that stand out to me most (with the other lines included for context).

The first bit of red highlighting is self-explanatory, and I just really like the lyrics.

The second bit of red highlighting is pretty hectic as a fan of the artist. Basically, the artist's first two major releases talked a lot about consumerism, modern society's idea of success and how fucking weird that is - like, some of my all time favourite songs that I've played like a thousand times are talking about the absurdity of spending all your life making money just for the same of making money sort of thing, so with this song coming on the artist's third major release, after he'd gained quite a bit of fame and success in the AusMusic industry, it was super  powerful to hear the idea of "got everything I didn't want". Because how does that happen? Well, we make it happen. We bring about things we don't want sometimes because there are competing thoughts and interests within ourselves - sometimes a complete split between our beliefs and our actions.

Quote
How am I? I feel good, I feel alright
I can't complain, okay I lied, I could look maybe if I tried
Feel like I could just lie down here on the street and I'd be content
I feel tired now but I feel wired later on in my bed
...
I feel alright! I'm feeling better than before
If this talk was any smaller it won't fit me anymore
Yeah I feel fine, got everything I didn't want
I got paid, I got my fucking name in slightly bigger font
I feel I blinked and thirty years just came and went
Shit when they asked me what I'd like to be I shoulda said content

It's a fucking amazing song. Lyrics and music in the video below.

Holy FUCK - plot twist. I was sitting on an incredible set of lyrics all freakin' week, but have changed my mind at the last moment. At least I know what I'll be posting next week now!

Anyway, my lyrics:

Last night, I dreamt the whole night long;
I woke with a head full of songs.

I spent the whole day -
I wrote 'em down, but it's a shame:

Tonight I'll burn the lyrics,
'Cause every chorus was your name.

I don't feel up to it rn to do it justice (but wanted to post the lyrics) - will come back with my interpretation/thoughts later on.

Listen to the whole song (much better with context), but those particular lyrics are 2:29 - 3:10 in the video above, for those interested. :)

First time I'm doing this exactly a week after my last post!

This week's lyrics are from "I Found" by Amber Run. I've purposely linked their collab with London Contemporary Voices because right now, I'm loving the vocals more than the original.

Quote
And I'll use you as a warning sign
That if you talk enough sense, then you'll lose your mind
And I'll use you as focal point
So I don’t lose sight of what I want
And I've moved further than I thought I could
But I miss you more than I thought I would

Deliberately lacking an explanation here, my thoughts are to follow :)

That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the border line
Of the edge and where I walk alone

Read between the lines
Of what's stuffed up and everything's alright
Check my vital signs
To know I'm still alive and I walk alone"

A bit of Throwback Thursday but also at the same time, a gentle reminder that in the last few weeks of Term 3, that there is a light at the end of tunnel (or so they say). That while it may feel that you walk alone on this journey, it's actually a team effort. We're almost there guys...only a few more weeks to go!

Been a while since I've posted here but these are my lyrics for the week;

Green Day: "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams"

"I'm walking down the line
That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the border line
Of the edge and where I walk alone

Read between the lines
Of what's stuffed up and everything's alright
Check my vital signs
To know I'm still alive and I walk alone"

A bit of Throwback Thursday but also at the same time, a gentle reminder that in the last few weeks of Term 3, that there is a light at the end of tunnel (or so they say). That while it may feel that you walk alone on this journey, it's actually a team effort. We're almost there guys...only a few more weeks to go!

This weeks are from Car Seat Headrest's 'Unforgiving Girl'

'Well, everyone learns to live with their sins
But girl you wear yours like a brand new skin
So take it all off and let me back in'

A really interesting song. These lyrics stood out, particularly as they were in the lead up to the chorus, but also for the fact of what its implying. One who would rather parade their previous faults then make new ones? Fascinating.

Also, @Brenden. You should check out 'Someone You'd Admire' by Fleet Foxes. The lyrics really play to the dualism interest you seem to have in music :)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WExRR2GDQ7A

I've been listening to this song way too much late, whoops.

Opeth -- Harvest
Quote
Into the orchard I walk, peering way past the gate
Wilted scenes for us who couldn't wait
Drained by the coldest caress, stalking shadows ahead
Halo of death, all I see is departure
Mourner's lament, but it's me who's the martyr
I believe this song is about dying.

Into the orchard I walk, peering way past the gate: Orchard=the afterlife. A bit of a play on 'Harvest'. The writer is in the process of dying, and they're starting to see what comes next.
Wilted scenes for us who couldn't wait: It's not nice there. It's wilted. It's devoid of energy.
Drained by the coldest caress, stalking shadows ahead: The process of dying has left the writer thinking that death will not be a happy place.
Halo of death, all I see is departure: The writer doesn't see death as going somewhere new, but leaving somewhere old.
Mourner's lament, but it's me who's the martyr: While the people remaining alive may suffer, the writer believes that they -- being the one dying -- are suffering the most.

I feel like I have more to say on this song than the simple explanation above, but I don't know how to express it, haha. There's a bit of debate about what this song is about, so I'd be happy to hear other interpretations! Full lyrics here.

I keep hearing this on the radio and the opening verse just y'know hits me a little (and I have no idea why haha): Kryptonite- 3 Doors Down

Quote from: opening verse
I took a walk around the world
To ease my troubled mind
I left my body lying somewhere
In the sands of time
But I watched the world float
To the dark side of the moon

Although the song actually is mainly about loyalty of buddies (afaik anyways), my interpretation of this part in particular is that everyone has their vulnerabilities- which in this case is being that the person in the song somewhat is scared of watching time flying by. :)

Superman (It's Not Easy)- Five for fighting

This is song is about about someone who tries to be a saviour, who saves everyone (hence the superman metaphor)... yet  acknowledges that it is not easy and sometimes is tough.

"I'm more than a bird, I'm more than a plane
I'm more than some pretty face beside a train
And it's not easy to be me"

I love these lyrics because they express how I feel when there are times when I try to be everyone's helper / saviour and I need help myself.

I’ve seen it all a thousand times
Falling down I'm still alive, am I? Am I?
So hard to breathe when the water’s high
No need to swim I'll learn to fly, so high, so high
You find the truth in a child’s eyes
When the only limit is the sky
Living proof I see myself in you

Show Em' What You're Made Of - Backstreet Boys (:D)

My interpretation of this song is that you could overcome any obstacles that life overthrows at you and to just be yourself :)

There's no fortune at the end of the road that has no end.
There's no returning to the spoils once you've spoiled the thought of them.
There's no falling back to sleep once you've wakened from the dream.

Will probably end up using other lyrics from this song because it's fucking incredible lyrically. But I want to focus on these for now.

I think they encapsulate the idea that sometimes, you can't take things back. Sometimes, things become noxious. And when they do, nothing's going to change that fact, no matter how hard or long you try.

2:28 to 2:50 in the video above.

Bit of a delayed one from me. I didn't have lyrics lined up this week, so I was sort of waiting to hear some that just went "bang".

I switched artists a few days ago, and today I heard the song that demanded the quote.

It's called Letters from Jamshed. Urthboy, the artist, has a sister that wrote letters to an asylum seeker detained offshore. The song's lyrics are directly taken from Jamshed's prose and arranged musically, so it can be a pretty hectic song.

I think the line that sealed it for me is the first line you'll see after you open the spoiler below. It hits home so heavily.

I couldn't find the lyrics on the interwebs anywhere so I transcribed them myself. There's one line that I can't get, and have never been able to. If anyone figures it out for me I'd love you forever hahaha (the cons of indie rap music  ::) )

My lyrics this week
Quote
Do you mind if you and I, we share the sky?
Do you mind if you and I, we share the sky?
Do you mind if you and I, we share the sky?
Do you mind if you and I, we share the sky?

Made my day when the letter came
Thank you very much for bearing my name
Write another letter to me, I'll be doing the same
Thank Jamshed Defani, I'm an Afghani being detained

21, I come from a town called Shashishma
3 hours from Kabul in a pick-up
I do not know the escape(?), I do not know the escape(?)
I do not know about my family's fate

I like books and soccer and chess and
I'm in charge of the sports equipment
Tell me that you're gonna marry your boyfriend
I pray for both of you and offer you my congratulations

Thanks so much for still remembering me
You can let me dream, that's what every letter means
Travelled alone across land and sea,
three years since I've seen my family

Also, @Brenden. You should check out 'Someone You'd Admire' by Fleet Foxes. The lyrics really play to the dualism interest you seem to have in music :)  [/url]
You've exposed me, and thus, this week, there is no dualism. (Also........ GOOD LYRICS IN SOMEONE YOU'D ADMIRE I LIKE DUALISM)

There's no returning to the spoils once you've spoiled the thought of them.
Boy, oh boy, oh boy.

'Cause you were just a small bump unborn for four months then torn from life
Maybe you were needed up there but we're still unaware as why.
I smashed this song so much when it came out, purely for those lyrics. <3

@Brenden -- Absolutely incredible song. I loved the concept. I don't listen to rap, so not the best effort on my part haha, but I tried to get the lyrics down. The bits in maroon are the parts I don't know, so I just wrote the closest thing to what I heard, even if it doesn't make sense. However, I'll probably come back tomorrow and see if I can get it after another listen.

My attempt at the lyrics
I see sky
I see sky
? ? ?
From an island in Nauru

I see sky
I see sky
? ? ?
From an island in Nauru

Please keep writing, send your picture
Best of luck and my best wishes
Much much love, your friend Jamshed

I put this letter in an envelope
Waiting, hope to hear back from you
Lots of love, your friend Jamshed

Do you mind if you and I, we share the sky?
Do you mind if you and I, we share the sky?
Do you mind if you and I, we share the sky?
Do you mind if you and I, we share the sky?

Made my day when the letter came, thank you very much for bearing my name

Do you mind if you and I, we share the sky?
Do you mind if you and I, we share the sky?
Do you mind if you and I, we share the sky?

I'm tired of the bad news, I don't wanna read it
Gave us a TV but I don't wanna watch it
Maybe I can die here, is anyone watching?
Send another twenty home, Australia don't want them

I receive your last letter at the perfect time
I am not radical, I know what's right
Made me happy when they had me on a hunger strike

Thanks for the CDs, I like them both
More than anything, Polly, I like your words
Languages don't matter
Just love it and learn
Love it and learn

And you when they see I arrive to conduct their interviews
And that's how Mant, Mary, and Leigh
And now I'm hopeful for what lies ahead
My best wishes, much much love, your friend Jamshed

Please keep writing, send your picture

This isn't at all the style of music I typically listen to, and it's Christian music which I also don't listen to, but hear me out.

About a year ago I was in hospital when something traumatic happened.  The next day a fellow patient - a quiet, suffering, kind, traumatised, body-there-but-soul-somewhere-else girl - told me she had chosen a song for me.  She stopped it halfway through, tears streaming down her face, moved beyond anyone I have ever seen in my life.  I needed this song.

The closing lyrics:

Quote
Baby, you're almost home now
Please don't quit now
You're almost home to me

I'm a day late with this one, but I'm here anyway! I should note that this song is in Icelandic. I found the song to be moving even before I looked up the translation. I would recommend listening to the song, as the translation isn't enough.

Sólstafir - Fjara
Quote
Svikin orð, grjót í kjafti þér,
rista dýpra en nokkur sár.
Brotin bönd aldrei verða söm.
Lygar eins og nöðrubit

Broken words, shards in your mouth,
Cut deeper than any wound.
Broken vows will never be the same.
Lies like the viper´s bite.
I don't think this one needs much explanation. Lies and broken promises from people you once trusted leave wounds.

Gorillaz - Empire Ants

Oh joy's arise
The sun has come again to hold you
Sailing out the doldrums of the week...
The polyphonic prayer is here, it's all around you
It's all around you, out here

Lyrics kind of play second fiddle to the instrumentals in this song. Not sure what genre to call it but I think it's pretty good.

I realised I skipped last week's lyrics...better late than never right?  :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Ju6Q8Azcmg

Logic feat. Alessia Cara & Khalid: "1-800-273-8255"

"I've been on the low
I been taking my time
I feel like I'm out of my mind
It feel like my life ain't mine
Who can relate?
I've been on the low
I been taking my time
I feel like I'm out of my mind
It feel like my life ain't mine

I want you to be alive
I want you to be alive
You don't gotta die today
You don't gotta die
I want you to be alive
I want you to be alive
You don't gotta die
Now lemme tell you why"

Something which I feel especially with less than 55 days until the exams hit, are realistically some thoughts that could be going through our heads...mental health is no joke, it should be taken care of and looked after like our physical health.

If you guys ever need anyone to talk too, do not hesitate to ask :)

Plus Logic's speech at the end is very empowering, if you have time, do check it out.

I haven't been able to find lyrics of the week for a while. However, recently, I've been rediscovering Alt-J. Specifically, their song "Taro". When I first listened to it, I was like "ok, this is a bit of nonsense". But then I properly listened to it, and read the lyrics. And like, in their nonsensical way, they're super cool.

Taro - Alt J

Specifically:
"3.1415 alive no longer my amour"

Preface: this song is basically about the wartime photographer Robert Capa, who documented the First Indochina War and died after stepping on a landmine or something. You can read about the lyrics here.

Anyway, so this particular line, is like, he was alive at 3:14pm, but never reaches 3:15pm because he dies - just like pi is a sequence that never reaches an end.

This week's lyrics are from Wade In The Water, by Urthboy (also last week's artist).

The song also has a prequel, Crushing Hard.

Both songs are about the love he has for his wife. Crushing Hard is about new love, butterflies in the stomach. Wade In The Water is about loyalty and commitment. "I know for sure that if you're ever dragged into the deep, I'll wade into the water" - basically a metaphor for his commitment, but also an acknowledgement of the type of love that makes people flee war together and brave the dangers of the ocean.

The lyrics I've chosen are not fully representative of the song but in the context they stick out hard. I'd SERIOUSLY encourage a reading of hte full lyrics.

Quote
We had been together since forever when the tipping point came
Dam broke, that's when everything changed
We had been through thick and thin but bigger things lurked
Have you ever envisioned your city in flames?

Full lyrics
[Verse 1]
Hey baby, baby don't you think we're lucky that we had it good for so long
We hit the jackpot, edge we got from where we come from
Poplar trees swaying in the wind, dead quiet
'cept the single engine of a passing headlight
Do you remember what that life's like?
And now your dad project a slideshow on Christmas night
My heart sunk on weekends with the rain outside
Because the cricket's called off, we could've got outright
Right? Right, day to day is cruisy on the mountainside
And bushfires used to only come in summertime
Apart from that it's fine, life's so easy otherwise
Sleepy streets mostly all free of crime
Kind of place to raise a daughter
We can reconcile our fortune in the natural order
But what's around the corner?
I know for sure that if you're ever dragged into the deep
I'll wade into the water

[Hook: Jane Tyrell]
I'll be staying by your side
I will be staying by your side
Whatever we're facing I won't run
Wherever we're drifting from
I'm staying by your side

[Pre-Verse]
But suddenly you're standing there in front of me, I'm crushing hard
And part of me is to excited
Dive into a love affair, right into each other's arms
Neither of us frightened
Not a single person on the planet could've swapped, nah
Yeah that feeling when you think you're gonna be with someone till you drop
Till you drop, till you drop, till you drop

[Verse 2]
We had been together since forever when the tipping point came
Dam broke, that's when everything changed
We had been through thick and thin but bigger things lurked
Have you ever envisioned your city in flames?
No, neither of us think about when we were of a certain type
Of people that just never thought they were in range
Well, we raised a kid to think the same
The fighting that was taking place well that was always somewhere far away
Channel 24 got it, run it round the clock, got it
Switch channel, get on Twitter, read it, retweet it
Look out your front door, streets are at war streets
Streets to the mall and an army being called
Is the city gonna fall while they tell us stay calm?
With another close call, why are children being armed?
As we join other people tryna flee to the border
Promise if you're at sea then I'll wade in the water

[Hook: Jane Tyrell]
I'll be staying by your side
I will be staying by your side
Whatever we're facing I won't run
Wherever we're drifting from
I'm staying by your side

I haven't posted in a while, oops. This week was a tie between the song below and 'In Dreams' by Roy Orbison, but hey, think I made the right decision. Both my options were not metal for a change, haha, so go me. The other difficult part was picking which lyrics to use from my chosen song, as they're all so damn good! The song is about drug addiction. Highly recommend giving the song (...and album) a listen.

You're really cute, I must admit
But I need something deeper than this
I wanna know when I'm looking at you
That you don't only see the things you want to

'Cause I'm not perfect, I'm flawed

'Cause I don't want it if it's fake
I don't want it if it's just for show, for show
I just want it if it's real and I'm thinking I should let you know, you know

~ Marshmello ft. Khalid - Silence ~

I found peace in your violence
Can't tell me there's no point in trying
I'm at one, and I've been quiet for too long
I found peace in your violence
Can't tell me there's no point in trying
I'm at one, and I've been silent for too long

Seigfied, Frank ocean

https://youtu.be/RWgpBlz16-s

Less morose and more present
Dwell on my gifts for a second
A moment one solar flare we're consumed
So why not spend this flammable paper on the film that's my life?

the first two lines are prompting you to get out of your head for a moment and just appreciate the present, which is the actual present in this wordplay. but the next two lines are morbidly meditating on the fragility of our mortality. we really have zero control over our lives because a freak occurrence like a solar flare could wipe all humanity and our memories clean so how can we live in moment knowing this? all it would take is one unlucky event and we would all be powerless. in this instance, the film paper is the Earth, which could easily be wiped out. (fun fact: old film paper is highly flammable à la inglorious basterds).

Carpenters: Rainy Day and Monday

Quote
Talkin' to myself and feelin' old
Sometimes I'd like to quit
Nothin' ever seems to fit
Hangin' around
Nothin' to do but frown
Rainy days and Mondays always get me down
This speaks to me to because I feel like this a lot. Like a lot. Most likely too much to be healthy and normal.
Every single lyric here is essentially my life in a nutshell.

~ In the Heights (Musical) - Lin Manuel Miranda ~

This is my street.
I smile at the faces
I've known all my life.
They regard me with pride.
And everyone's sweet,
They say, "You're going places!"
So how can I say that while
I was away, I had so much to hide!
Hey guys, it's me!
The biggest disappointment
You know
The kid couldn't hack it,
She's back and she's walkin' real slow
Welcome home.
Just breathe...

B: Jiu suan hui dao cong qian zhe reng shi wo wei yi jue ding
B: Even if we go back in time, you would still be my only choice

B: Wo xuan ze liao ni ni xuan ze liao wo
B: I have chosen you, you have chosen me

B: Zhe shi wo men de xuan ze
B: This is our choice

This song is in Mandarin, but I like the overall meaning of it and it just sound pleasant as well.
The lyrics of it are about a couple confirming their love for each other and sticking what that choice till the end.
If they could make the choice on whether to choose each other or not, they would always choose each other.

George Michael -- Careless Whisper
Quote
I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it's easy to pretend
I know you're not a fool
I don't know the intended meaning of these lyrics -- something about love? The lyrics are meaningful to me, however, as it holds a connection to my last relationship. My girlfriend-at-the-time enjoyed slowish dancing in private, so we'd put music on -- like this song -- and dance together to it. Given we eventually split, it makes the first line especially poignant.

this is the 2nd thingo i've posted concerning lyrics associated with a past relationship. i just need to note, however, that i do not regret it, as breakups are perfectly normal and you're almost certainly going to experience a few

From Perro Fiel-Shakira

Quote
Yo no pido nada extraordinario

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHq2qrFUlGY

My lyrics this week are very practical, given fresh rumours that Shakira has split from Gerard Piqué (largely bullshit, but can hope). They're a description of the kind of man she looks for. Translation:

Quote
I'm not asking for anything extraordinary,
Just a "real man",
Who would through himself in the mud for me,
Who can change the lightbulbs and wash the car.
I want someone who is attentive and sweet,
Who isn't the jealous type,
And who is a prince on the street,
But savage in the sheets.

Actually low key hate these lyrics tbh. Somewhat dated ideas about manliness, though still obviously have a lot of resonance in society.

I got a heart full of pain, head full of stress
(Nobody's listening)
Handful of anger held in my chest

Opeth -- In My Time of Need
Quote
At times, the dark's fading slowly
But it never sustains
Would someone watch over me
In my time of need?

Even though the dark [depression] sometimes gets better, it always comes back. The singer needs somebody to care for them and help them get better. Like a lot of people, I've been suffering from depression for quite a while, so I find the lyrics quite relevant.

On the MJ theme, lol, this line from Childhood (needs the music with it!):

Quote
Before you judge me
Try hard to love me

It's been running round my head all week, reminding me of the need to try and understand people rather than jumping to conclusions.  Doesn't mean being a people-pleasing pushover (something I always struggle with), but still, I prefer a default position of loving first and judging later, rather than the other way round.

Voldemort - With Confidence

I really just love this whole song.

My friend showed my this song once; really good. :)

My one: Chicago by The Icarus Account.

Quote:
Quote
"So if you happen to be in Chicago
Then I'll take the first flight tomorrow
Confess all the feelings
That I've been concealing for years

And if you happen to be in the city
Then meet me on top of the highest building
Darling what else can I lose
I already lost you."

The soft guitar and the singer's voice just so completely encompass the lonely but beautiful aspect of the song, and the way he professes his love. I found it last year, and it just carries me away every time I hear it. It makes me super emotional, but I love it anyway. :)

Quite an old song now, but this is from "Come Home Cardinal Pell" by Tim Minchin  ;D ;D
(Had to analyse its lyrics for Eng Lang and now that whole week it was stuck in my head!  ;D ;D)
Such a nasty song though...

[Verse 1]
It's a lovely day in Ballarat
I'm kicking back, thinking of you
I hear that you've been poorly
I am sorry that you're feeling blue
.....

[Chorus 1]
Come home, Cardinal Pell
I know you're not feeling well
And being crook ain't much fun
Even so, we think you should
Come home, Cardinal Pell
Come down from your citadel
It's just the right thing to do
We have a right to know what you knew

Quote
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly

This is one of the first songs my little brother learnt on the guitar that we got him.
I sing it with him sometimes, and it really touches me as beautiful imagery.
These are my lyrics of the week because the blackbird sings even in the dark, bent but never broken.

When I got my computer, there were three songs that automatically came on it (yep back in those days). I decided to keep two of them by Habib Koité and it came up on shuffle the other day. Really catchy song, kind of awesome that Apple forced this one on me.

EDIT: I've just done some googling and apparently this song was actually part of the sample music package on Windows Vista...no idea how it made it onto my newer computer but still glad!

We'll set the city ablaze for their treachery
We'll spill their blood and set our fathers free

Ooh, two hundred years of war

Take back what the kingdom stole

❝It’s alright to stop
Now we don’t run without even knowing the destination
It’s alright to not have a dream
All the breaths you breathe are already in paradise❞
                                                        --- Paradise by BTS

Yes, this is a KPOP song. Yes, it's from BTS. I've been a fan of BTS for 4 years now and even with their sudden increase in fame, their music never fails to inspire me and touch me. Their songs always carry this raw emotion and the way the lyrics are written reflect how many people in our society today feel. This song called Paradise focuses on how some people don't have a dream and how it's ok to not have one. It uses a marathon as a metaphor for life, and how we constantly feel the need to run continuously towards the end goal even though we do not know what really is in store for us. From my interpretation, the lyrics reveal that the paradise that many people think is the dream you are working towards to is not necessarily your paradise. You are already in paradise as you live through life, because life is one of the biggest paradises of all. Live through every day like it is your last, because simple goals like getting a computer can be your small dream. You're living in your paradise now, stop worrying about the big dreams [the end goal in the marathon] you may or may not have and slow down a second just to look at the little things [scenery as you run] around you.

'Cause the silence never stayed

reasoning and youtube for song
When you lose someone, it hurts. A lot. There's a hole where they once were. So losing a friend's mum this week, I've had this going around and around in my head. There's always going to be a breach that family can never cover.

Hozier -- Sedated
Quote
Just a little rush, babe
To feel dizzy, to derail the mind of me
Just a little hush, babe
Our veins are busy but my heart's in atrophy
Any way to distract and sedate
Adding shadows to the walls of the cave

Line-by-line:

-This is about taking drugs. Just a little bit -- like telling yourself you're not an addict
-The purpose is to feel a bit numb, and stop whatever you're thinking
-The drugs start to make your mind feel a bit more quiet
-The drugs are to help get over a heartbreak
-Any method will do
-Using the drugs is making you lose touch with reality and what really matters (reference to Plato's Allegory of the Cave)

I've been listening to Hozier constantly for the past week. Send help. The lyrics really speak to me, especially since this song describes the first half of 2017 perfectly for me. I was dealing with depression and a breakup, and I was using drugs to cope. Really meaningful lyrics.

♪♪ Pray for you - Jaron Lowenstein ♪♪ Old song... but I can't help but laugh n sing along every time I hear it!!

Lyrics
I haven't been to church since I don't remember when
Things were goin' great 'til they fell apart again
So I listened to the preacher as he told me what to do
He said you can't go hatin' others who have done wrong to you
Sometimes we get angry, but we must not condemn
Let the good Lord do His job and you just pray for them
I pray your brakes go out runnin' down a hill
I pray a flowerpot falls from a window sill
and knocks you in the head like I'd like to
I pray your birthday comes and nobody calls
I pray you're flyin' high when your engine stalls
I pray all your dreams never come true
Just know where ever you are honey, I pray for you
I'm really glad I found my way to church
'Cause I'm already feelin' better and I thank God for the words
Yeah I'm goin' to take the high road
And do what the preacher told me to do
You keep messin' up and I'll keep prayin' for you
I pray your tire blows out at 110
I pray you pass out drunk with your best friend
and wake up with his and her tattoos
I pray your brakes go out runnin' down a hill
I pray a flowerpot falls from a window sill
and knocks you in the head like I'd like to
I pray your birthday comes and nobody calls
I pray you're flyin' high when your engine stalls
I pray all your dreams never come true
Just know where ever you are, near or far, in your house or in your car,
Wherever you are honey, I pray for you

Hozier -- Would That I
Quote
So in awe there I stood as you licked off the grain
Though I've handled the wood, I still worship the flame
Long as amber of ember glows
All the wood that I'd loved is long ago

And that's not tonight
When I'm set alight
And I blink inside
Oh, your blinding light
Oh, that's not tonight

For context, throughout the first half of the song, the singer's old love is likened to a willow tree. I think the references to loving something else -- the flame -- refers to a change in the person. They no longer love the old part of them, the tree, but for tonight they can love the new part. They no longer love them -- but that's not tonight.

What the hell did I used to do
I've even started to speak like you
And now you're living in my memory,
Living in my mouth,
Living in the four fucking walls of my house.

This bit has been stuck in my head since it was released! And I have no complaints.

Are you deranged like me?
Are you strange like me?
Lighting matches just to swallow up the flame like me?
Do you call yourself a fucking hurricane like me?

I think there's a flaw in my code
These voices won't leave me alone
Well my heart is gold and my hands are cold

There's a heart now, where there used to be a ghost

So you know good things are happening
When the jackboot needs to jump

Put on false confidence just to feel alive

Always in this inner fight
Do I listen to the voice that says I’m
Worthless never will be right
Do I try to keep my head up high
Though I feel that I deserve it all
These daggers going through my chest
Can’t you see the devastated souls
The remains of my own foolishness

My current on-repeat song: old but good.

The Logical Song - Supertramp

When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful
A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical
And all the birds in the trees, well they'd be singing so happily
Oh joyfully, oh playfully watching me

But then they sent me away to teach me how to be sensible
Logical, oh responsible, practical
And then they showed me a world where I could be so dependable
Oh clinical, oh intellectual, cynical

I said, watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical
A liberal, oh fanatical, criminal
Won't you sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're acceptable
Respectable, oh presentable, a vegetable!

But at night, when all the world's asleep
The questions run so deep
For such a simple man
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
Please tell me who I am

This whole song is great

Oh I
Try to be happy but it's hard sometimes
It's hard sometimes

When I come off cold
I'm not doing it on purpose
You caught me in a hole
That I dig for myself when I'm nervous

TW: self-harm references
Spoiler
Big old pill to inch around
There's no copping out this time
Tried my best to get it down (Get, get, get, get it down)
Sometimes seems like I'm still young
And lookin' at the boy across the sink
Thinking "What the hell have you just done?" ("What the hell have you just done?")

TW: suicide references. I should really pick happier songs
But be real and just jump, you dense motherfucker
(You're worth more, Achilles)
You will not be more than a rat in the gutter
(So much more than a rat)
You want my opinion, my opinion you've got
(No one asked your opinion)
You asked for my counsel, I gave you my thoughts
(No one asked for your thoughts)
Be done with this now and jump off the roof
(Be done with this now and get off the roof)
Can you hear me, Achilles? I'm talking to you

Could I not keep up, am I falling behind?
Seems like overnight
They figured it out and I'm falling behind

Oh, I just wanna know I'll be alright
Oh, cause it feels like I'm running out of time
And everyone around me is where they're supposed to be
Am I where I'm supposed to be?

Like jumping in front of a bus
Like how do I make this stop
When it feels like my therapist hates me
Please don't let me go crazy
Put me in a field with daisies
Might not work but I'll take a maybe
Oh, been breaking daily
But only me can save me
So I'm capitulating
Crying like a fucking baby

Sections of Gabriella's Song, originally a Swedish (?) song... found a translation...:
All I want is to be happy
Being who I am
To be strong and to be free
To see day arise from night

I am here and my life is only mine
And the heaven I thought was there
I’ll discover it there somewhere
I want to feel that I’ve lived my life!

There is something missing from the song - Godliness - and yet something of it is very beautiful. I've not heard it sung in English, altho' these lyrics would closely fit with the song. Oh, and the song itself is approximately incredible. You should listen to it. I've only heard one singer sing it, whom you might be unsurprised if you know my musical tastes to find was... Amira Willighagen!
I can't recall if this is her best version, but have a look at this version:
She was fourteen at the time.

I wish that you could see the pain that I've seen and
All of the time I spent being not me and
I hope you know it's not always happy
In my head

'Cause I don't know
The perfect road to go down
But I know
I'm trying my best
I'm trying my best to be okay
I'm trying my best but every day
It's so hard
And I'm holding my breath
I'm holding my breath 'til I can say
All of the words I wanna say
From my heart

I've been hurt in the present
The smile on my face ain't the feelings represented in my head
Oh I'm sorry I'm alive
I been wishing I was dead from a very young age
So tell me how you feel
Well I'm feeling just fine
That's a lie that I been telling my entire fucking life

Still tryna get to you
In hopes you're on the other side talking to me too
Or am I a fool who sits alone talking to the moon?

I know you're somewhere out there
Somewhere far away

Never heard of whoever originally wrote or sung this, but only recently was I introduced to it, and for some reason I love it, and today it turned up again in something I was listening to. The singer I've heard is some kid named Emma on YouTube, and she does an excellent job (Adrian and Emma-Jean Music, if you're interested).

Anyway, it's been rattling round my head for a while now.

Broken hearts everywhere
From stepping on love we don't care
Somebody tell me what we gonna do

Even though its plenty to share
People still going hungry it ain't fair
But you don't think about it, until it's you...

Just look around the whole wide world
So many beautiful things to see
Take my hand and come along
Spread some love with me

It's the answer to the questions in your mind

Love is the answer

Is the answer, if you're looking, you will find

Love is the answer

It's the only thing that makes us truly free...

I'll say it again

The answer is...

Love.

My Guardian Angel by Robat Arwyn

Sometimes I feel
The world is unforgiving
A daily battle
Just to go on living
But when all hope is fading
An angel there descending
And dawn is breaking full of hope once more

This is such a beautiful encapsulation of, well, everything! I'm quite an optimistic person naturally but sometimes can get a bit down. The dawn is very hopeful too - a new day, with new hours to use. I noticed this really when I was transcribing the lyrics (I noticed they weren't available online and I wanted them) since the singer sings very clearly and it was easy to hear and it hit me like a sledgehammer, I don't know. Anyway, those are my lyrics for the week.

Might be the best feature on Donda//one of the best verses this year

Quote from: Jay Electronica
Uh-huh, in the name of the true and living God, the beneficent, the merciful
Thank you for bringing me up the rough side of the mountain like Ertuğrul
Every knee bowed and every tongue confessed and paid homage
To the monk who visited Rothschilds like Thelonious did Pannonica
It's Jay Elec-entendre-nica comin' through your monitor
Back from the great beyond like the Son of Man or the Son of Donda?
I never rolled the GSXR or the R6 or the Honda
But I flew my Ducati through North America like Wakanda
Earthquakes will strike this nation for what Bush did to Rwanda
What the Clintons did to Haiti and Downing Street did to Ghana
In Tenochtitlan, they call me Terremoto, El Negro Loco
I shake the tectonic plates of the game if I lay one vocal
The God is interstellar while you fellas remain local
My bars is like the pyramid temples of Pacal Votan
As sure as the DOJ confirmed Ezekiel's Wheel
I could change the world like Yacub with two pieces of steel
My sword and my microphone, I swore to the Christ's throne
But when you great, they wanna say you took a L, José Castille
I'm in the fight here, fight here for what seemed like lightyears
My rugged cross and thorny crowns squeeze out Christ tears
Thirty pieces of silver clout, my Pierre price tier
It's a war outside, it's a war outside
It's like the last days of Sodom and Gomorrah outside

Yes there's a lot we can
We can learn from this loss
Learn not to let it fall around our ears
Don't fall in love with the, with the way things were
It'll fuck up your mind, it'll fuck up your mind

Don't give in
Don't you dare quit so easy
Give all that you got on the sword
Don't say that you won't live forever
I know, I know

And if you want to be free,
I can't be the one to make you believe.
You've still got this promise to keep.
Step back and wash away the reckless intentions.
They're leaving me breathless.

Run, running back, tell 'em where I'm coming at

I was on that bullshit, and now I'm done with that

Scared of what I didn't want, scared of what I wanted at

Thought that I was finished, but I hardly had begun in fact

I'ma beast, I'ma monster, a savage

And any other metaphor, the culture can imagine

And I gotta caption for anybody asking

That is I'm feeling fucking fantastic
