Week 2

It’s only week 2 and I have 2 assignments due tomorrow!!

My timetable for this terms pretty good-I’m only at uni for 2 1/2 days. Mondays are 6 hours straight classes (9-3), Tuesdays for Wind sympth (4-6) and then 1 1/2hr on Wednesday. I’m only starting to get used to the transport times again. I’ve been parking at the station and its really annoying how far away I need to park (even at 7-8:30am)!!
My timetable

I’m doing 2 education subjects this term and 1 music. Normally, I do the opposite so I’m hoping the education courses will be interesting.

I also started volunteering 2hr a week at a preschool in the holidays (I need to do volunteering for an award I’m doing). I brought my clarinet this week and the kids were so cute!!

Managing the classroom: This course looks the most relevant to practical teaching so far!! It’s been really interesting! We’ll walk into the lecture and they’ll be music videos playing and the lecturer herself is engaging. She is practising what she’s telling us to do which is cool to see! Each tutorial includes a mini micro-teaching activity as well: last week we worked on introducing ourselves to a class. For our assessment, we have to do 2 student wellbeing modules and write some reflections (mainly based off placement): it isn’t too exciting but it’s pretty easy.

Digital Literacies: This is my education elective-we get to choose one and this was the only one running this term. The class is really small for an education course (only just over 20 people) and we have our lectures in a tutorial room. I also don’t know too many people in this class. So far, these lectures aren’t as interesting as my other education course. Our ongoing assessment is an online google site/education blog. For Friday, we need to have the basic setup, About Me page and an opinion piece done.

Performance Lab: This is my last year of performance lab. I have a different lecturer to last year so hopefully it’ll be more interesting. Over the last two weeks we’ve had seminars on collaboration and rehearsal techniques. We have two assessments this term: a solo performance in wk 5 and an ‘arranged marriage’ performance in wk 7. For the arranged marriage he paired us with someone else in our class and we have to perform for around 4-6 minutes. He said he was going to try to do unusual instrument combinations so I was a bit worried at first but I’ve been paired with another girl who plays clarinet so we should be able to find a clarinet duet.

They're music masterclasses for my performance lab course-when the uni gets someone in to talk/perform. Its run 3 times during the term and we have to go to at least 4 in the year.

Thanks!!   :D

With the practical stuff in the Edu classes (like practising how to introduce yourself etc.), what's the sentiment usually like? Is it like a "oh gee, here we go again - how awkward" kinda vibe, or more a "this is awesome, we're learning how to do stuff!" kinda thing?

I think it's a bit of both. Like it's really cool that I will do it at placement next year/its actually useful but it's also kinda've awkward as well. We were meant to be giving each other feedback and it was either "sounds good", or "you've got a good teacher voice". I think because some people are going on the longer placements this year it is taken a bit more seriously but it's still pretty awkward as well.

Week 5

I got 7 emails on my birthday about the corona virus. Unis basically gone online from Monday. I don’t mind too much about classes (even though performance lab’s going to be really weird). I’m a little sad about the social stuff though (wind sympth & my community bands been cancelled for the term, CBS is moving online and I’m not really going to be able to meet up with too many people from uni). I wasn’t too concerned before about the virus but now that everything is closing/moving online it's easier to become more anxious. I can definitely see why we're going online (and I think its good not to be on public transport too much) but I don’t think I’ll enjoy having uni online.

Performance Lab: I was meant to have a performance assessment today but we were emailed last night saying class is cancelled. It’s frustrating because we’re going to have to record ourselves playing and then upload it. I’m probably going to want to get it as close to perfect so I’m going to have to record it like 5 times. I’ve still got the arranged marriage assessment towards the end of the term but I don’t know how much that’ll work when classes aren’t on (part of me doesn’t want to go all the way to uni just to rehearse for an hour). The piece (up to 4:29) we’re doing is really cool though. Pretty sad that wind sympths not on for the rest of the term because it was really fun.

Managing the classroom: This so far has been my favourite education subject so I’m sad it’s going online. Our lecturer sounds so organised though-so far she’s uploaded/recorded the lectures for weeks 6-8.

Digital Literacies: This ones a bit stressful because we have 2 group assessments and we won’t be seeing any of our group members. One assessment is due next week, we’ve hardly started and one person hasn’t been responding to my messages and the other is a presentation (which now must be done during the online lecture).

Week 6

It’s been a hectic week of online classes and lectures!! As of tonight, I have no reason to leave the house (everything either been cancelled or gone online). In some ways it’s been cool because I have been video chatting with friends/and doing online stuff but it's a lot different to in person. CBS has been doing all there stuff (Bible studies/talks) online and were doing an online trivia on Tuesday which I’m keen about! Clarinet lessons are going online, and I’m not looking forward to it at all.

Performance Lab: Ended up getting my performance recorded and uploaded (which was super frustrating because I hate listening to myself recorded!!). I went to my friends house on Wednesday, and today so we could practise and film our arranged marriage assessment. We got it recorded and while its not perfect, it’s the best we can do with the circumstances.

Managing the classroom: I really love my lecturer for this and the subject! She’s really organised and our tute went well this week (even if our micro-teaching was incredibly awkward-we needed to role play communicating with parent complaints). For our assessment we had to analyse 2 videos on classroom management-it wasn’t too bad but it took longer then I was expecting.

Digital Literacies: I had a group assessment for this on Friday which ended up going ok (even of my other group member did some last minute). I have a group presentation tomorrow based off a reading we needed to do. This is what my website  for my final assessment task looks lie so far.

I feel like the online classes work a lot better for education subjects then my music ones. I think one of the things that’s really stressful is not knowing how long this is going to last. If term 2 ends up being online, I’m considering under loading and potentially adding an extra year onto my degree. It’s not ideal but I’m meant to be doing a music pedagogy unit next term, which was my favourite last year and I can’t see going as well online. I was also meant to overload in term 3 which I was nervous about anyway. At this point, I’m kinda just waiting to see what happens though.

Week 11
I finished classes today!! Have 2 assessments to do and then holidays. However, I’m not too keen for these holidays. I feel like they’ll be really boring.

I have an online camp in the holidays (CBS has our mid-year conference) so hopefully it’ll still be interesting and I’ll be able to meet some more people. I’m also teaching my first clarinet student on Thursday! Never expected my first lesson would be through zoom! I’m excited but also a bit nervous that I won’t know what to say, or I’m going to have to try hard to be engaging online.

I handed in my Queens Award folder yesterday! It’s the highest international Girls Brigade award (I’ve been working on it for 4 years). It’s included volunteering/GB/church service, a music major work, initative tasks, references, a speech, and a few events. I still need to do a tiny bit of volunteering, follow up a reference & an award review interview. It should be presented at the end of the year at government hose which is exciting.

I’ve been facebook messaging and regularly video chatting a few of my friends during social isolation. I hate phone calls (it makes me really anxious) but I find video calls a lot better! Had an almost 2hr call with one of my friends last week, which got a little long but was really great to meet up and chat!!

I'm hating social isolation right now! At this point, it’s annoying that I don’t know how long this will go on for. I miss going to uni, band, etc and seeing everybody.

At this point, it looks like term 2 will be online (or at least start online). I’m doing 3 subjects next term: performance lab, special education: inclusive strategies, and becoming a performer (another one of my pedagogy units). I really enjoyed my pedagogy unit last year but I’m not sure how good it will be online. Apparently, this units meant to be the least practical so hopefully it’s still good. My timetables great next term (only 2 1/2 days of class) and I probably won’t be at uni!

Performance Lab: We had part checking due this week (which was a bit weird because we only had ensembles for 4 weeks). I had to upload videos playing excerpts from the piece we were working on, and some extra orchestral excerpts. I really enjoyed this course at the start of the term, but not as much when it went online. Were meant to be doing conducting next term so hopefully that’s fun!

Managing the classroom: This has by far been my favourite education course. It was almost a sad, bittersweet ending today, our lecturers been amazing! Our last assessments due on Friday and it’s taking me ages to do. Its a 2500 word classroom management plan: broken into a philosophy, theory and practise section. We need references for everything, so it’s taking a while.

Digital Lit: Our last assessment is a max 4 minute video on our content for a flipped classroom. I’m doing it on how to answer a HSC music 1 aural analysis question. I’m basing it on year 11 students to prepare them for year 12.  I’ve got my script ready, I just need to film and edit it. I might upload it to the music forums if I’m happy with it. This is what my website looks like so far (I still need to work on it’s presentation a bit though). This course hasn’t been as exciting as my other education course but it’s still been interesting to learn.

Holidays
Not keen for this whole term to be online! I think I was expecting to be going back to uni sooner considering schools are back 5 days a week and some of my classes are small (My music ones are between 17-25 people) but its looking like we won’t be. With the restrictions starting to ease I’m hoping to meet up with some more friends in person soon. I’ve really missed going to uni/band and seeing my friends!

In the holidays I had an online MYC (Mid year conference) which was really fun despite it being a lot different to last year (most of it was on zoom). I got to meet up with a few friends that week (both in person & online!) which was nice!

I’ve really enjoyed teaching clarinet, even though its been though zoom! I love lesson planning & seeing her face when she gets a new note right!! Sometimes the internet cuts out though which is annoying! Were starting high notes this week.

I’m getting 2 baby guinea pigs next week & I’m excited (but I’m really bad at deciding on names for pets!)!

Week 1
Performance Lab: I had online ensemble (combined wind sympth/orchestra) this week and it was really stressful! We’re doing the 2nd mvt of Beethoven's 7th symphony as a combined wind sympth/orchestra as well as orchestral excerpts. We were practising parts of it during the ensemble zoom time & then making recordings of our part each week. There were a couple of times where he tried to get us all to play and it definitely didn’t work but it was stressful that I might have been called on to play by myself in front of the group! It took me about 1 1/2 hours to record a 20 second part yesterday and I’m not keen to have to record every week (I hate listening to recordings of myself). It was so different to normal wind sympth rehearsals and I would’ve preferred not to do ensembles this term if it was all online! Our studios this term are learning how to conduct (and with a guest lecturer). This week was the basics which was still interesting to learn. Only half of us had our cameras on which was a bit awkward (but I preferred being able to see how other people were conducting).

Becoming a performer: This is my 2nd pedagogy course. I loved this course so much last year so I’m hoping it’ll still be good online (this terms not meant to be as practical). In week 3, I have to do a 10 minute presentation & discussion on an article about clarinet pedagogy.

Special education: The lecturer for this course seems interesting! This week we only had an hour lecture and then 2 online modules to complete (disability awareness and evidence-based practises). I woke up 10 minutes before the lecture started so I was half asleep at the start (its weird not having the travel time)!

Week 5

It’s weird to think that I’m already halfway through the term (and also my entire degree)!! Next weeks a reading week/mid-term break so I don’t have any class! I’m organising to meet up with some of my friends (most I haven’t seen since March).  ;D

The hype and excitement of video calls has definitely worn off by now. I have some friends who enjoy doing it but I’d prefer to be able to meet up in person more.

I’m also thinking about wanting to be qualified to teach history as well as music. I really like studying my bachelor of music/education and I don’t want to change it but maybe studying some history afterwards? It’s something I think I might look into more and ask when uni goes back in person. I’m not against staying at uni for a little longer but I don’t know how easy it is to add on another teaching specialisation.

I got two baby guinea pigs a few weeks ago and there really cute. it took a little while to name them but there called cookies & cream.
My guinea pigs
They're both girls. The one with the white nose is cookies and the one with the brown nose is cream.  :D

Performance Lab: Conducting classes have been interesting! We’ve mainly been going through the basics so far. Almost 3/4 of the class normally have our cameras on so it’s not as awkward anymore! We were meant to do a conducting test through moodle this week but it didn’t really work (only 2 questions came up for a 45 minute test). Online ensemble isn’t as stressful now. We’ve almost finished recording the first piece (and then were moving to the Magic Flute overture) and are working through orchestral excerpts. It’s still a lot different to normal rehearsals though!

Becoming a performer: So far, I’ve had to do 2 presentations for this course. Its almost easier doing presentations online because I can read off a script and no-one will know! They have both been on articles about teaching musical expression. My teacher was really irritated with the author of my first article so she had heaps to say about it!! Afterwards, we have to write critiques on the articles main claims, theoretical/empirical support and persuasiveness. It was kinda similar to history extension: we had to evaluate the article based on reliability, validity and objectiveness. I’m really happy about my first mark and still need to work on my 2nd critique.

Special education: My 3000 word assignment for this was due today and took ages to write (and get to the minimum word count)! It was based on evidence-based practises. I chose social skills and looked at social narratives video modelling, self-management and peer-mediated instruction. We’ve had guest lecturers for the past few weeks: one on intellectual disabilities, a speech pathologist and a principal on mental health. I’ve had some very awkward breakout groups in my tutes!

Holidays!
I finished uni and also got 1000 posts on the forums last week which was pretty cool!  :D

But, I’m already starting to get a bit frustrated with Covid and bored of the holidays. Where I live is considered a covid hotspot. Some of my friends aren't keen to meet up and there’s not really many places to go. I tried to meet up with a friend last week and it fell through twice (neither of our faults, but still annoying).

Next term I’m studying three music units. It’ll be the first term without doing an education unit! I’m doing Performance Lab (my last ever performance unit), World Music and Educating the Musical Novice (my last pedagogy unit). At this point, I’ll be doing my performance classes in person (studio and wind sympth). So, I’ll have a 9-6 day on Tuesdays with two in person classes and an online lecture (getting up early again for the train will be so hard!!). I’m really hoping that wind sympth/my studio will be in person because I haven’t played in a band/seen people in my course for ages (and this is our last performance unit!). While it was cool to see people in our ‘online wind sympth/orchestra’ and play some music, you can’t play together on zoom and it was very different to what it normally is. Theres a lot of caution right now with wind instruments, air particles and covid though so I wouldn’t be surprised if its not on in person. Theres a suggestion that wind players may need to prerecord our performances and discuss them in the in-person class which honestly isn’t ideal. There still not 100% sure what will happen  with our performance exams: if they will need to be recorded or online. Overall, I’m pretty happy with my timetable for next term-I have three days of classes and on Thursdays I finish at 11am (although I do have three 9ams!!)!

I think I do want to be qualified to teach both history and music. I want to send some emails to some different unis over the holidays to see how easy it is. I’m not sure if I’d need to study both history and history teaching related units or how long it’d take.

I’m also hoping to move out of home sometime next year. I have no solid plans yet (and haven’t had a shift at my job since March) but I want to move closer to uni and have a bit more independence.

I keep checking if my marks are out yet and I really want to know how I went (especially for my major assignments: my pedagogy essay and my inclusive education booklet) but I only handed them in just over a week ago!

Hey,
Will do a longer update later but I'm doing a group research assessment on music education in schools for my World Music course. I would really appreciate if anyone who has studied music in NSW (years 7-12) could fill out our google form!!

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdUhmyyyP4W0AUvc12gTsg5OqAqDHCtOlueScfAvZ-zVUocTA/viewform

Thanks so much!!  ;D

5/11/12
Week 8

It’s already week 8 which seems weird because this terms gone pretty fast (and also slow at the same time)! I’m excited for this term to be over soon even though I have no plans for the holidays.

I’ve had 2 classes online and 1 in person this term. I was really excited about the in person class but most of the time its been pretty underwhelming/disappointing! My performance lab studio isn’t compulsory to attend in person so some people watch through zoom. Because it’s a 9am class we’ve had a week with 5 people out of 15 in the actual room (so it felt like I’d wasted time travelling into uni). The lecturer doesn’t know how to use zoom well so he picks on everyone in the room to answer questions while those in zoom get out of it. I also don’t have any of my closer friends in this tute so I still haven’t seen some people in ages! My other in person class is tango ensemble (wind sympth isn’t running this term) and for the first half of the term only one wind player was able to play at a time. So, I only came into class every two weeks and could only play for around 20 minutes. Thats changed now so we can all play!

Uni’s been very quiet this term! Nobody really stays in between classes and the music corridor, which is normally really busy, always has no-one.

I have a job interview on Monday for a swimming instructor position at my local pools. It’s only a contract until the end of December but it has paid training and sounds pretty cool so I hope it goes well!

Performance Lab: This is my in person class-we’ve had between 5-10ish/15 people show up each week. We had the option this year to either record or do a live performance exam. I’ve chosen to record my pieces because I can do it as many times and I won’t get as anxious. I’ve just started getting lessons with my piano accompanist and I need to record a piece for an assessment on Monday. My community band started back up 3 weeks ago which has been so exciting because I hadn’t played with people since March! We’ve just got a new conductor so were starting to get used to him and the new music. I’ve also started piano lessons a few months ago. It’s difficult because I’ve listened to a lot of great pianists at uni before and I’m nowhere near that level but it’s been interesting to learn so far!

World Music: This class sounded interesting but it’s probably been my least favourite so far. Our lectures are powerpoints with voiceovers and YouTube links which are incredibly dry and difficult to get through each week! I would prefer if we had live class through zoom or blackboard instead of something pre-recorded. The tutorials go for 2 hours and are difficult to get through as well: they normally just going through questions from the lectures (often in breakout groups). We have a group assessment for this and luckily we were able to pick our groups so I’m with some of my friends. It’s an online ethnographic project so we are researching music education in NSW high schools and how funding/covid/the syllabus has affected it, which is why I posted a survey before. We have a presentation and 2000 word research report due at the end of the term. We also have another listening test which was meant to be next week but got pushed back to wk 10 which is great because I don’t know anything about the pieces yet!

Educating the musical novice: This is my last pedagogy unit and I’ve enjoyed these ones so much! This has mostly been focussed on beginner tutor books and teaching young children. Our first assessment was critiquing different tutor books for our instrument. Then I had to create a beginning clarinet tutor book for the first 3 weeks with an intro,  (clarinet care, posture, embrouchere, tonguing descriptions) and three pages of clarinet exercises. I have an essay due towards the end of the term on teaching young students.

I might properly reflect on last term later but ...

I started placement on Friday!! I'm going to be at a school for the rest of the school term (so 4 weeks). I'm at a Christian school around 20 minutes away from me so pretty close! I was also at this school for year 10 work experience because I know the primary music teacher but this time will be with high school!

I'm mainly teaching years 7 and 8 but have one year 9 class a fortnight. I'm teaching from Wednesday and teach 1/3rd of a teachers load. So, I'll be teaching around 7/8 periods a week, observing another 7 periods and helping with band/orchestra/choir rehearsals!

I was really nervous about placement last week but it was pretty good and everyone seems really nice! It's still a bit stressful to actually start lesson planning and teach! I had some time on Friday to plan and I couldn't really decide what to do! Also, double periods seem like a really long time to teach (100 minutes)! I'm worried I'm going to be really tired over the next few weeks but hopefully it will be really good to start teaching!   :D

I have my last ever education class this week! It still doesn't really feel like I'm towards the end of my degree!
