Those who are doing commerce and arts at UoM

Hi, everyone doing commerce and arts ........ I have some questions about these degrees

first of all, if I got into arts, how long would it take me to transfer into Melbournes Law program and what would the process be
What sort of results should I look to get??

And those doing Commerce, I really wanted to do Commerce and major in Actuarial Studies but I realised I wasn't doing spec that was needed to do that. So everyone whos doing Commerce, what are you majoring in? What is it like? What are the job potentials (and earning) for a career in that major.

I can't fix individual links, Mao. Anything that starts with freestudynotes.com has a command line written in the header to redirect immediately to vcenotes.com. It becomes too hard to delineate the rest of the URL and replace it with vcenotes.com because the forum folder changed name and I'm not too flash with pattern recognition code.

I'm doing Commerce @ UoM. I'm majoring in Finance, I would be doing a double major in accounting and finance if I wasn't doing a Engineering breadth sequence however. Enjoying the course so far, except for Quantitative Methods. Finance is a pretty broad field, but if I were to go into the Finance sector down the track, I'd be looking at getting into Investment Banking which has a 70,000 starting salary for a new grad.

P.S-I think you can still do Actuarial Studies, even if you aren't doing spesh. Spesh is a pre-requisite into a certain maths subject which is required for Actuarial Studies (which one I am not sure), but you could still get into that subject through doing a easier maths subject which leads into the required one. Hope that made sense. It would slightly increase your time at uni of course.

To enter into 300-101 (Introduction to Actuarial Studies) you must have completed 620-157 (Mathematics 1), 620-155 (Calculus 2) or 620-120 for UMEP students. I have ordered the prereqs in ascending exam score order to gain acceptance into the subject (I think mathematics 1 needs 70% but UMEP you really need to be high-achieving).


To gain entry into Mathematics 1 you need >=40 in specialist or permission from the director from director of Math and Stats (I think you have to sit a test? Not sure if it still exists?). So yeah, you don't necessarily need spec but it's almost like a requirement. For calc 2 you only need  min 27 for spec though.


Oh btw kopite you get high remuneration because you'll work a hell of alot (time = money   )

What's the chances of being allowed to transfer from Arts to Commerce @ UoM and when would it be possible (ie. end of first semester of end of first year?)

Can someone just confirm for me... if someone was to choose this path, they would have to take the required substitute for the methods component at UoM as a breadth in the first semester to be eligible for transfer. Is that correct?

I don't think people realise how hard it is just to get into investment banking. Given that there are very few graduate positions available, and the strong demand for those positions, the chances of getting a job is pretty slim.

true. i guess the lifestyle that you gain by going into investment banking is also a very good point to consider.

you'd have to take as many commerce (particularly the compulsory commerce ones) subjects as you possibly can in your BA.

you could also do commerce at another university and then transfer into melb commerce

What is a better option? Internal transfer (through the University) or external transfer (between institutes)?
