Biomedicine

Hi, a year 10 student here.

I am looking at biomed at UoM and am in the process of selecting VCE subjects. I am going to study biology and chemistry, but would it be a good idea to take physics as well?

I am aware that physics is a first-year subject, but should I take it at VCE level too? I am planning to get into medicine afterwards; is biomed physics a decent level for the GAMSAT or do I need to have a year 12 physics background as well?

Many thanks

The idea that Biomed has little opportunities is kind of false tbh. I know it is common viewpoint though. Obviously there are the classical paths most people take but there are plenty of things people can do. Some listed below, a lot of these courses are related to health and science So it would be reasonable to think someone who is interested in med would also be interested in these things if they were not able to get in. A lot of these courses result in careers within the same field as med and even working in the same places with patients e.g. Nursing, physiotherapy etc

Just looking at the unimelb graduate report I'll list a few courses. However, you can still get jobs straight out of the course.

Doctor of Medicine
Bachelor of Biomedicine (Honours)
Doctor of Dental Surgery
Doctor of Optometry
Doctor of Physiotherapy
Master of Clinical Audiology
Master of Public Health
Master of Nursing Science
Master of Biomedical Science
Master of Speech Pathology
Graduate Diploma in Psychology
Master of Biostatistics
Master of Genomics and Health
Master of Genetic Counselling
Master of Social Work
Master of Engineering
Master of Science (various)
Teaching (Masters/ Graduate Diploma, various)
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
Juris Doctor

Would you recommend taking physics if I'm looking to get into biomed/med?

I don't really think it matters if someone does physics or not.

You absolutely do not need to do physics!
Only do physics if you're interested in it, I hated physics so I didn't do it in VCE.
What happens in Biomed @ UoM is they separate the cohort from those who did 3/4 Physics and those who didn't.
If you don't do Physics you will do the Physics for Biomedicine subject which is intended to be a foundation to Physics.
More importantly, for the GAMSAT what you learn in uni will only be the stepping stones, and you require to self-study for the GAMSAT.
My advice to you is to pick the subject you ENJOY, that way you can the best possible ATAR.
