Title: GAT Scores
Post by: mooy on December 15, 2017, 05:35:38 pm
Not sure if anyone takes the GAT at all seriously but just wondering if anyone has got their results yet and if so how did they go?

Written communcation: <9/40
Maths/science/technology: 28/35
Humanities/arts/social sciences: 12/35

didn't even bother finishing 1 piece of the writing task.

Don't take it particularly seriously. Last year I did the multiple choice, wrote something then left about half way through. This year I stayed the whole time.

I got
Marks/total (standardised score)
Written communication - 21/40 (30)
Math/science/tech 26/35 (38)
Humanities/arts/social sciences 29/35 (44)

Last year I got standardised scores of (same order as above) 24/38/42

Written communication: 32
Maths/Science: 46
Humanities: 44

Last year I got 33 in written communication so I actually tried to improve for this year just in case I missed my English exam and got 32 haha. Fortunately there seems to be no correlation between written communication score and English study score.

I'm really not sure what to do here guys. I'm only in year 11, so GAT marks don't really effect me, but I'm still disappointed to get such a low mark.

Written communication- 27/50
Maths/science- 46/50
English/humanities- 50/50

I have no idea why I received such a poor score for written communication, and I'm thinking of getting a statement of marks to see why.

Is there any way to contest that mark? It's not particularly impactful but it looks horrendous on my record and I'm not sure if I deserve it. I definitely could have written some bad essays but I don't think they were that bad!

Any recommendations you could give me for what to do next would be great.

Failed the GAT again but still got good study scores.

To be completely honest, the only thing I can tell you is to just let it go and aim to do better next year. For one, GAT scores don’t count for anything at all (unless you can’t sit your final exams, which is highly unlikely). But also, by the end of Year 12, your GAT marks will be the least of your worries.

I don't mean to hijack this thread by asking, but, how do I find out what I received on my GAT this year?

pretty sure you get it in the mail around midday on atar release day (at least that is what happened for me in 2015/2016) :)

I sounds like you have it figured out for the most part. In that you have decided to try and find out why you lost marks. The (obvious) good news is you will have the opportunity to take the GAT a second time. One of the easiest ways to evaluate your next move, to perhaps formulate a plan of attack to ace it next year, might be to pick one of the tests from past years and complete the written section and ask a couple of your teachers to assess your work. Having a statement of marks/examination review would probably supplement this process.

If I were to hazard a guess (and only a broad, speculative guess) you might be missing one of two key things. Either your approach to the two essays is not addressing the expectation (e.g. for written task 1 you are asked to basically regurgitate the information in an interesting manner; I've heard some students say they have written some form of TEEL structured essay...sounds dubious) or the second consideration, which is probably less likely, is that you need to address the clarity or grammatical aspects of your writing.

Disclaimer: I am not a teacher or someone who has any authority on the subject. I don't even know my scores for this year. When I took it last year I go a *45+ on the section, but not a perfect score. So basically take my advice with a grain of salt so to speak. You certainly seem diligent and on that basis you will undoubtedly excel in your next test since I'm sure you will identify whatever you need to adjust. Good luck,

Eventful

*I don't have any immediately verifiable method to support this, but I do care about my reputation, despite the relative (emphasis on relative) anonymity I have on this forum and so I can only offer my word.

I got a 49 in written comm so here is my advice that I can't verify the value of:
For text 1:
- jot down the ideas that each text is related to eg. Globalisation, monetary value, culture, history
- understand the connotations of each text eg. Pulling bread out of the oven -warm, home, hunger
- understand the techniques and impact of different features Eg. Displaying expertise, use of diagrams
- find the most salient motifs to write each of your paragraphs on   Eg. one might be on cultural value
- aim to show your understanding of written conventions  Eg. Structure, grammar, spelling
- aim to show your understanding of relationships between the various texts

Text 2
- don't pick all 3, it'll be too difficult to keep it organised
- stay on topic
- the prompts are deliberately broad so that everyone can engage with them
- this is where you draw on your understanding of written techniques, use persuasive devices
- control your tone and make deliberate choices with your wording and structure
(I opted for trying to convey expertise so I used authoritative language, jargon, elevated lexemes etc. )
- make a brief plan before you write if you have the ideas to - it'll help you maintain control and direction

Another point, I didn't leave much time for math/science and performed worse than I would've like in that area. Make sure that you make deliberate decisions about time management.

Last year I got a 28 in written comm. (and no, I didn't use the above ideas in that year), so I guess my result must've been "horrendous" too
