Commerce without Math

Hi guys,

I was looking to get into a Bachelor or Master of Commerce to go alongside my Law studies, but unfortunately a lot of universities require the completion of a mathematics unit, which I frankly don't have much time for.

What do you think would be the best option from here?

... Suck it up and do the maths? Why don't you "have much time for" a maths unit? In a discipline like commerce, that's pretty much like saying you don't "have much time for" understanding English whilst living in Australia.

Also, what do you want out of a commerce degree? Depending on what you're looking for, a diploma in business could work out, and to memory does not require so much maths.

You're doing Law right now, is that correct?

I think the only option you may have here is to either to the Maths Unit or maybe have a go at speaking to the Dean of the Faculty? Maybe show him/her some evidence that you are competent in Maths.

I'm not too sure what else you might be able to do.

Ridiculous comparison, but thanks anyway. The reason I don't have much time to do maths boils down to a number of factors, some of which are personal.

To be honest, I was thinking of applying for a Masters of Commerce. Anywhere either than Swinburne which might be reasonable? even if I have to do on-line. As long as it is a distinguished university. We all know how strict employers are about that sort of thing these days.

Bachelor of Business, Monash Caulfield

I do wonder what you want to do in Commerce, without high-school mathematics.

Any commerce degree without math isn't worth the paper it's written on.

Commerce and business degrees with no mathematics prerequisites will still have introductory mathematics/statistics classes as part of their core curriculum. Even then, if you choose to avoid any extra maths study - you are limiting yourself to 2-3 majors (marketing, management/hr, intl. business).

So i guess it all boils down to what you are looking for as a career outcome - because you will be removing yourself from the financial sector (banks, accounting firms, corporate law firms, most M&Cs) from the outset.

How about you tell us what your career aspirations are, and we go from there.
