Opinions on Medify

So I’ve been having a look at courses for the UCAT and I came across medify which is made for the UKCAT. It seems a lot better then the Australian companies and it costs 60 pounds for 5 months~ 110 AUD. Can someone please  tell me whether it is worth it and if there are any other costs associated with it because it seems quite cheap compared to other Australian companies.... Thanks

Personally I wouldn't entirely trust any company trying to sell themselves to you based on their previous students' Umat scores. Sure, good umat marks might also be indicative of good ucat marks, but these Australian companies are generally new to the whole system and really rely on profits from students. They'll do their best to market themselves as good prep companies but there's no evidence yet that their teaching method works.

Compare this to previously established UK companies which have their materials prepared for the ukcat, the same test that you'll be sitting. I wouldn't tutor someone in specialist maths if I'd only studied methods myself, likewise I wouldn't pay for tuition from a company which up until very recently was in no way targeted towards the ucat.

However, having already gotten into university I'm not exactly thinking about ucat/UMAT anymore so it's possible that these companies really have put significant time into making their courses as detailed and helpful as possible. In that case, maybe someone who has experience with both will be more helpful :)

UMAT/UCAT tutoring is largely a waste of money. There've been some reasonably small studies that have looked at the effects of UMAT tutoring on students' scores, which noted that the success of students who get tutoring tends to be because of inherent factors about the student (mainly level of wealth) and not the tutoring itself. From memory, there was a modest improvement in section III, but it's hard to say that that improvement justifies the obscene cost.

How about just doing practice questions? Surely doing a few mock exams will improve performance. Is it going overboard and spending hours that doesn’t have much effect?

I don't know if you have already selected Medify but I will say this anyway. I think doing an ample amount of mock exams and practice questions is important- but not too much - it is better to space them out. However I doubt you would get a perfect score by doing 3 official UKCAT mocks (which I have heard are way harder than the actual exam- and I would agree) and un-timed free practice questions- unless you are a genius. Like others have said I wouldn't recommend getting the courses from UMAT companies as I feel that they have rushed on their questions and make several mistakes. I am using Medify and in my opinion its really good. There is certainly enough questions for you to do as well as mocks. My only qualm is that its interface is a bit annoying (for example when you have done a Quantitative Reasoning drill and you want to look over it, you can't use the specific onscreen calculator). Apparently a lot of UK students have said that their mocks are similar to the real ones- so it seems more trustworthy than the UMAT companies. I also think its not necessary spending your money on UCAT books (obviously because UCAT is computer based and you don't have the luxury of timing your questions as managing under time pressure is the most important part of the UCAT)- as I have seen some users suggesting.

Over boarding in the UCAT is unnecessary in my opinion (like your VCE subjects)- there isn't really any point in doing all mocks and practice questions if you're not going to review them and see what your mistakes are.

Hey Krycek
Nice ss scores, just wondering why are you doing 7 subjects, did you complete a majority of your subjects in year 11 and now have to wait till the year finishes?

Please keep the thread on topic
