For any musical instrument. I always say get a competent teacher for at least the first 3-6 months. You would need some good technique hammered into you (teehee). After that, you could choose to drop or continue, though I would always recommend the latter

err it is hard to learn solo
i did for the past 7 years and you would think i'd be a pro by now but.... i guess it depends on the level of playing you want to reach. just normal chord songs you can do solo easy enough, but if its music pieces then id suggest a teacher defintely

Self-learning can only take you so far. If you're aim is just to learn a few songs and strum some chords, self-learning is ok, but if you want to take the instrument seriously, I would recommend getting a competent, knowledgeable teacher. I've learnt so much from my teacher, everything from fingerstyle to jazz chords and improvisation to popping and slapping bass to fast metal solos. If I'd taught myself, I'd probably never be able to do half of what I can with my guitar.

Acoustic Centre has some decently priced guitars. I'm buying a Maton from them soon.

Try second hand stores like Fretted Instruments in Fitzroy. You might find a good quality instrument for cheap.

For the guy who wanted fingerpicking songs try under the bridge by red hot chilli peppers. I'm currently battling my way through that and I think it's difficult but i'm also pretty terrible.

How do you play the opening notes? 5th fret A string 3rd fret B string. Surely that requires you to play without a pick.

I do the low note with pick, high note with my 3rd (ring, not middle) finger. I think it's called hybrid picking, not sure. Seems logical to me, as the rest of the song sounds better with a pick, and it's cumbersome to pick one up b/w the intro and verse.

Was waiting for a thread like this to pop-up, ha.

I've been playing for about 3 years now. Haven't ever had a lesson. I don't like the idea of someone else telling me how to play.

LOVE blackbird. Probably my favourite song to play.

I play in a pop/rock/punk band. So exhilarating playing shows.

Guitar was an awesome relief from VCE stress.
