I'm thinking of starting these holidays (just like I did the previous two summers; I SWEARS I'M SERIOUS THIS TIME). Tossing up between acoustic and electric though =S

Acoustic first. If your good at that electric. TRUST ME!

Hmm sure? Other places recommend electric first since it's apparently easier on the fingers. In terms of the music they can play, I'm happy to go either way and eventually intend to learn both. Just wondering what to start with to gauge my talent and interest.

EDIT: Crap, realised I just hijacked your thread OP so hmm. Some random songs that my friends keep playing while I'm around; Wonderwall by Oasis, I'm Yours and Lucky by Jason Mraz.

In Electric, when you play, things such as timing and your general knack for the instrument aren't so heavily reflected in the sound. Also, sloppy finger work, still produces good sound. However, on an acoustic, this isn't the case. If you don't press down perfectly and in the right place, you'll have a sloppy sound. Same with timing, bad timing on acoustic, you bloody notice it. If you learn electric you'll neglect all these aspects, it will become very hard to become a really really good player later on, because you'll develop bad habits. Trust me, learn the acoustic first, then move onto electric. Once you graduate (LOL) acoustic, if you pick up electric, you'll be able to muck around with sound distortion and stuff but your timing/technique will still be impeccable.

Trust me, acoustic.
+1 Sound advice. The transition from acoustic to electric will be much easier than vice versa.

Don't worry about the hijack. It's all good.

I was looking for fingerstyle songs. Playing Wonderwall and Jason Mraz eventually becomes tedious and repetitive (i.e. strum chords. strum chords. strum, strum strum lol). I used to play rhythm songs, but now I'm focusing on fingerstyle. It's much more challenging, but more rewarding.

I do.
Woot! What are you playing at the moment?
I'm currently learning
For the Love of God - Steve Vai
Pride and Joy - Stevie Ray Vaughn
(I know these are on the VCE Solo Performance list, but I don't do VCE Music. I have a feeling my guitar teacher thinks I should do VCE Music, though)

EDIT: and in other news, my friends bought me a new practice amp for my birthday, last week. Roland Microcube. Cutest amp ever.
And I'm also learning some jazz standards for my school's stage band.

And with my band, I'm playing:
Misery Business - Paramore
Monkey Wrench - Foo Fighters
Sweet Disposition - The Temper Trap
to be performed at school (my guitar teacher thinks we should play in the quad - nobody told him that no-one ever hangs out in the quad)...next week, I think, was the plan, but we haven't rehearsed in weeks due to exams, so it'll probably be sometime next year.

Any of you niggas on Ultimate-Guitar?
I am, same username ;) Haven't been on the forums in a while, though.

^LOL really?

and MBBS, I learnt Blackbird maybe 2 years ago? Can't remember...but I may have the sheet music/tab lying around somewhere...you can have a copy if you want.
EDIT: The original Beatles version - I think it's a bit simpler than the version the kid in the video is playing.

LOL. I can't even remember which forums I posted in, it feels like so long ago :S
Going on UG = hours wasted that could be spent actually practicing guitar and getting better at it.
Much like how going on VN = hours wasted that could be spent actually studying.

how difficult would it be to self-teach guitar given that i have no musical background at all?
