Is procrastination ALWAYS a bad thing?

To start, I'm not entirely sure where to post this, I just want some opinion on the scourge of procrastination from those around my age. Also, I couldn't find any other general discussions on this topic.

So, is it always detrimental to put off something that you have to do? When can procrastination actually be beneficial for your productivity, and health & wellbeing. Discuss, if you can!

Hey there,

I guess there are two sides to procrastination: it can be a good thing and a bad thing! There are two types of procrastination, active and passive. Passive procrastination is what everyone thinks stereotypical procrastinators do: they'll binge watch a crap tonne of Youtube videos for the whole day and get nothing done. Active procrastination is considered as a more 'positive' form of procrastination because you may not want to complete a task, but you're purposely putting off that specific task and complete a different task.

During Year 12, I would always try to be a more of an active procrastinator. A good example of this was when I was too lazy to do my math homework (because math always takes up a significant portion of my study time) or if I was stuck on a question, I would put math aside and complete a task from a subject that had nothing to do with math, so physics was out of the question. I would complete a small portion of my Major Work, like reading and taking notes from a journal article. Although I'm purposely putting off my math homework, I'm at least being somewhat productive by completing a small portion of my Major Work.

I guess my point is that if you're really struggling to complete a task, try and do another task that's not too tiring so you can at least turn procrastination into a good thing.

Hope this helps!

I think that procrastination is always going to happen for everyone at some point in time during vce/university - just make sure that you are aware of it and it doesn't get out of hand.

If we just take the simple definition of procrastination to be putting something forward or delaying (no necessarily something that HAS to be done at that specific point in time) it could be beneficial if one where to feel overwhelmed by their workload or getting closer to a burnout. So if you are using that time effectively for something else e.g .Working on something else,  relaxation, a hobby etc there are benefits.

I think it's usually bad.

But I heard about this thing called 'diffuse learning' where you do something non-academic and the stuff you've just been studying gradually seeps into your memory!
