Does anyone know if the university of melbourne lets bachelor of arts students do 2 foreign language subjects (2 different languages :P ) during 1st year?
as far as i know, 1st year arts students do 1 IDF subject per semester, a breadth subject and 2 arts electives per semester
so basically, can both those electives be taken up by languages?
i cant see why not, but knowing the "wonderfull" melbourne model im half expecting some stupid restriction :buck2:
can anyone help me out on this?

Yep, you can do two languages. You could even do three if you wanted (although, you'd probably be crazy).

its just that melbourne has quite a few sample course structures on their website and in booklets yet ive never seen an example of 2 languages :P

Ok, so what's the deal with the Diploma of Languages at UoM? I get that it allows you to complete the equivalent of a major in a language, but does it eat up all your breadth subjects? Or not? Could I do 2 major sequences plus a Diploma of Languages?
You could even do three [languages] if you wanted (although, you'd probably be crazy).
Just ignoring the crazy thing for the moment :D, could you explain how would this would work?
Would it be: 2 majors + a minor
or 3 majors due to some crazy overloading (if possible?)
or 2 majors + dip lang as above? (if this is possible)

At UoM, you can not use any breadth subjects at all, but the Diploma will add a year to your degree. Alternatively, you can make it eat up all your breadth subjects and finish the degree in the normal 3 years.
At UoM you can do an Arts degree as well as a Dip. of Languages which enable you to learn 3 languages.

and at uom i guess there would be countless international students which could help in developing oral/listning skills ;)

well just remember that languages have more contact hours than most subjects and are generally a challenge for most ppl
but as i was typing this i noticed your 2 LOTE scores in your signiture so perhaps you may not "overload" as quickly as others :)

I don't really know how easy it is at Melbourne. You'd probably have to do a semester and go reasonably well to show them you can overload and not fail. Also, during the summer semester Melbourne offers intensive Latin - an entire years worth over semester. That could also be an avenue towards overloading (I think they also have intermediate French over summer too?)

Thanks for that info. If anyone else was curious also, yes, they do have intermediate French in the summer semester - I remember asking someone from the French department.
Out of interest, is it any easier to overload at ANU?
I hope all these questions aren't too irritating!

It's not irritating, don't worry. In the PhB, in order to overload you have to at least have gotten a HD average (they probably prefer it to be a little higher than 80 though, I guess). Regular Arts students only have to get a credit average, I'm told.
