Questions about Bachelor of Nursing/Midwifery @ Deakin

  • Is this course actually harder to do than straight Nursing, apart from just things like taking an extra year?
  • How different is it if I took straight Nursing and then did a Graduate Diploma of Midwifery?
  • How much would this course (not talking about afterwards) interfere with my church commitments (Wednesday evening and all Sunday, sometimes Saturday also)?
  • How many people generally do this course at Burwood campus? (ie how many, a general number, would I share stuff with)
  • Any idea of actual workload, including placements; how much of my active uni time (ie not holidays, etc.) would be taken up with uni-related things?
  • Being an introvert I have to ask - group projects? Lots/little?
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Since nursing is pretty rare on AN and probably no users have done this degree, it's unlikely anyone can help much.

1.  Not "harder" as such, because you do the same number of units per trimester from the same faculty, but you will have double the days of placement per trimester, which could give you less time for study and assignments.

2.  You'd do all the nursing units for BNurs in the first three years, and then do all the midwifery units and placements at once in the 1.5 year diploma afterwards.  Note: you may need to be employed during the post-grad diploma, and work concurrently with study.  This might mean you need to do a full nursing grad year and then pick up the midwifery diploma through that organisation.  You can expect an extra 6 months to 2 years until you're a registered midwife this way, but long term there's no difference.

3.  The course itself won't, but placements may (I don't actually know).  Obviously in real life on this job you'll be working on a rotating roster and may not have a choice.

4.  The Deakins Admissions Transparency document shows how many students enrolled in each course at the start of 2020 (scroll down to "Deakin University Student Profile").  This will decrease over time as student drop out.

5.  You can find the official contact hours for each unit in the handbook, including placements; those are the bare minimum attendance requirements for seminars/simulation sessions/practicals.  A 4-unit load is theoretically the equivalent of FT work, but I'd guess nursing is probably more than many degrees (e.g. Arts, Business) but less than some (e.g. Med, some sciences).  It'll vary widely based on your level of commitment and how quickly you learn.

6.  The handbook for each unit gives you an idea of the assessments - some are labelled as group assignments.  Remember that, introvert or not, working as a nurse is a people-focused job and you'll almost always be working as a team.

Thank you for the very clear reply. Sorry if my constant questions are annoying you :) I hadn't seen the Student Profile stuff either, so that was useful. Thank you!
