Its really unnerving how despite how our lives are becoming more and more software oriented, no one is choosing to do software design and development!!

It's common all over the country :) In Victoria, our IT and Software subjects lack participation too due to the content and promotion of the discipline in earlier years.

Unfortunately until schools can get up to date and realise the need for strong discipline-specific IT teaching, the lack of interest will continue. It's sad.
Experience in teaching at both secondary and tertiary levels.

Agree with Aaron, also ...

Part of it is to do with the perception of difficulty. Many people think software development is hard and something that requires high level maths.

Software development is something that a lot people can pick up, I wouldn't say it's easy but you definitely don't need 4U maths or 3U.
