I just completed a year of commerce at Melbourne Uni, and after toughening it out for a year, I'm not too sure if commerce is for me. I'm applying for a transfer to arts/law and commerce/law at Monash Uni. I graduated in 2015, and I had the required ATAR for law but wasn't sure about law at the time. I'm not 100% sure if I'll get in, but my final WAM should be about 74-75?

Anyhow, if I am presented with the opportunity to actually transfer, I was wondering about a couple of questions if I were to be admitted into arts/law

1) Would I be able to receive credit for prior study into say the arts component at all? I did French, Chinese, macro & microeconomics, management and marketing and if I were to do arts, I'm looking to major in French. I sent an email to Monash and they said that 'you may be able to receive an exemption from part of your Monash course if your prior studies at the University of Melbourne are assessed as equivalent to Monash units.' ?

2) Feedback on studying arts/law? And in comparison to commerce law?

Also in regards to commerce, how are people finding it at Monash Uni? I have a friend who transferred from Monash to Melbourne Uni and said that at Melbourne Uni, he's found it a lot more quantitative and mathsy. The maths component is something I thoroughly dislike about commerce, and I'm not too sure what I'd major in (I did marketing and management which are less mathsy but found it incredibly boring). I do like economics, but again, worried about quantitative aspect (But was also considering behavioural economics? how useful that is I would question though)? Would people recommend commerce at Monash Uni?

Sorry for the lengthy post, would appreciate some responses!

1) You should be able to get credit. If you've done French units as part of your commerce degree, then I am sure they could find equivalent units at Monash for you to credit to a new Arts course. Monash's administration has been very good and helpful in my experience.

2) Can't really speak to the law part, but since I'm studying Arts/Economics I can offer some insight into arts. I have really, really enjoyed the arts part of my course. I find it to be a really good counterbalance to my economics units because 1) Arts units require less of a time sink than economics ones, 2) Arts typically doesn't have very high value exams, which helps to relieve pressure during SWOTVAC and exam period. Also, I find the arts units to be really varied and interesting; you can really tailor your degree to your areas of interest.

In regards to economics and how 'mathsy' it is, that depends very much on your choice of units. I've done 1st year micro/macro and 2nd year micro/macro, and the most complicated maths so far is just basic differential calculus (finding maximums/minimums, differentiating functions to find marginal revenue/product, etc.) There is quite a bit of algebra, but that isn't hard at all.

Once you finish the introductory economics units, then you can certainly take very quantitative units if you want (especially in the econometrics major). However, you can also focus on more policy, theoretical units if you wish. I would highly encourage you to have a basic maths background if you want to do economics (just basic calculus will get you through the first couple years). I've really liked economics at Monash so I would certainly recommend it!

Thanks for giving me some insight into economics at Monash! I did macro/micro this year, and wasn't the biggest fan of macro (due to it getting more quantitative), but the maths wasn't too bad so far. I'm just worried as I heard when you get to second or third year, there can be quite a bit of quantitative modelling as such involved, and that I find it quite intimidating! What type of economic units have you picked?

Also, would any of macroeconomics & microeconomics count towards an arts degree? At Melbourne Uni, I know some people who are arts students but are majoring in economics (and I know in general, you can get a B.A in economics in quite a number of places), and was wondering if that would work the same at Monash?

Thanks for your help!

 So far I have done:
 Principles of micro
 Principles of macro
 Intermediate micro
 Intermediate macro
 Business statistics
 Data modelling and computing

All of these units were required to complete my economics degree. Next semester I am starting to do more specialised units like monetary economics, labour economics, history of economic thought, etc.

In terms of how economics relates to an arts degree, it works quite differently at Monash than Melbourne. At Melbourne you can major in economics as part of your B.A, at Monash you cannot (unless you were doing a single Arts course and used all of your electives on an economics major).
