Study part time in yr12 — yay or nay?

Hi all, I’m a current year 11 student trying to decide what to do for next year. Technically I already submitted subject selections but I can still make changes.

Right now my plan for year 12 is to do Literature, Biology, Specialist Maths, and Ancient History. The thing is I’ve already done 5 VCE subjects already, plus I’m doing UMEP this year so chances are most of those won’t count towards my atar.

So my Plan B is to study part time with only 3 subjects while also working part time. I’m doing work placement this year and the place I’m working at says they’re happy to let me continue as a part timer for next year. This place is also relevant to the field I want to work in in the future.

So I need some advice and opinions because I don’t see a lot of people doing part time study in year 12 while also working part time on the side. Do you guys think it’ll be beneficial or should I just stick to the more traditional route?

Thanks !

2018: Classical Greek (39) | Chemistry (46) | Methods (47)
2019: UMEP Chemistry
2020: Literature, Specialist Maths

Definitely not common to study part time without other reasons (usually medical) for it, but then it's also not common to have already done as many subjects as you have. I don't see any problems with what you're suggesting, assuming your school (and parents if applicable) are fine with it. From what you've said the only reason you'd not do it is for the sake of having a more traditional year 12, which imo doesn't outweigh the benefits of being able to work in a relevant field whilst you're studying. Tradition is overrated anyway, if that's the only thing that's making you hesitant about doing it then I'd say go for it.

Why are you considering doing three subjects in Year 12 in the first place? I would certainly take the option of working and studying next year - I don't see a lot of reason not to work - it seems pretty low risk high reward?
