I thought that might be the case, and it was the answer I was looking for without prompting you :P Thank you!

I've encountered a potential problem if I choose to do Calc 2, Linear Algebra and Real Analysis in first year. This is the course plan I would be looking at:

Semester 1

- MAST10006: Calculus 2
- MAST10007: Linear Algebra
- PHYC10003: Physics 1
- ECON10004: Introductory Microeconomics

Semester 2

- MAST20026: Real Analysis
- PHYC10004 Physics 2: Physical Science & Technology
- FNCE10001 Finance 1
- Some Science Elective

The only problem I see with the above is that the Science handbook says that "Students must complete at least 50 science points at Level 1 before proceeding to Level 2 science subjects". Because I'm planning on doing the three maths subjects instead of Accelerated Mathematics 1 & 2, is there any chance I can get an exception to this requirement? By arguing that they are equivalent to the two Accelerated subjects which are only Level 1?

If you talk to the SSC, you can get it exempted. You'll have to get decent grades to warrant it however and someone nice on the day.

Are you sure that it's 50 points of science? I think that they changed it to just 50 points of 1st year subjects because I was able to do RA without any trouble in the study plan.

Hey, thank you for raising that; it inspired me to double check and subsequently I realised that I read the "prior to 2011" bit by mistake. If anyone is wondering, vcestudent94 is indeed correct, it's just 50 points of any level 1 subjects before level 2. Similarly, You need 50 points of level 2 before any level 3.

i know that a (relatively) large number of students who do umep math in year twelve do vector calc in first year sem1 (without having to go through the science student centre or anything) so im pretty sure theyre pretty lenient with the 50 points of study thing.

Really? The handbook seems to suggest that Calc 2 and/or AM2 are prerequisites, while UMEP only covers the Linear Algebra / AM1 prereq, unless I'm reading it wrong.

If this is the case, is there any chance I could do Vector Calc in semester 2? I have made the decision to do the accelerated track, so I'll have AM1 under my belt and I would be doing AM2 concurrently.

EDIT: I'm still struggling to find a semester 2 science elective, so this would be a godsend :P

Yo is it concerning that I literally have no idea what I'm doing once I get into my course? (subjects wise)

How do you know so much about this? I can't even name 2 subjects at the university lol

Right now all I know about my course (which is the same as the OP's) is that it takes me 1 bus, 1 train and 1 tram to get there, my ATAR should be enough to get me in and that I want to do a Masters in Engineering.
Not really; you've got a while before you have to make your decisions. Clearly you just have better things to do with your time :P If I get bored I have a look, plus I'm kind of really excited for uni. Also, a while back I was tossing up between ANU and UniMelb, and this involved checking out the subjects.

I'm pretty sure Vector Calc is only offered in semester 1.
Hmmm. If you look here, then it says both semesters:
https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2014/%21B-SCI-SPC%2B1021
Whereas if you look here, for some reason it doesn't say anything  :-\
https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2014/MAST20009

Can someone clear this up?

yeah nah, you're reading it right. it does say calc2 is a prereq, but i definitely know people who took it before taking calc2/am2. just in case, you may want to email christine mangelsdorf about it though.

pretty sure that vector calc runs both semesters. it definitely did last year.

you enroll in the whole years subjects at the start of the year but you can change your sem2 subjects whever you want, so you can put anything there as filler if you dont want to choose now.

The last few days something has been up with the Handbook where a whole heap of subjects are not listing the Semesters in which they are held.  It could be because they are re-working this out based on enrolment numbers over the next couple of weeks.
I talked to a Professor who runs the Chem Sys major and he said they were working on a reshuffle of what subjects are being held in what semesters, so.... maybe that's the reason that info is temporarily omitted. But *shrug* I have no evidence.

you'll be able to check when they run when you try to enroll in them in the portal anyways. i'd check but im already enrolled in vc for sem1 and am far too lazy unenroll and reenroll again.
