When they derive your study score, do they use your score from the GAT on all sections together? I'm not doing any humanities so I'm thinking on not doing the humanities section of the GAT.
The derived score takes into account all sections, how much is dependent on the subject that the score is being calculated for. Remember, the GAT is a test of skills, so the analytical component from the humanities questions, for example, is also considered in any other subject that requires a similar skill set (i.e essentially every subject).
I was also wondering this as I do not do any maths or science subjects so how will my ability in English, Literature, Drama, Media & Australia History be indicative of my score in the maths section, a subject I have to taken for 2 years!
... but I am positive you all will do fine :)

pretty sure they advise half an hour per writing task and two hours for the questions. kind of works out because you can do a writing piece, rest your hand for an hour and then do another piece which kind of broke up the monotony of the test for me last year (: but whatever works for you is best tbh.That might just work...

Hi guys, I am only in year 10 and completing one vce subject: further maths. For the GAT, because I am only doing a maths related subject can I just focus on the maths component of the GAT or will I still need to perform reasonably well in the other areas namely science, english and humanities?Maybe you can do your maths questions first, but make sure you do the other parts and give it all a shot - if nothing else, it's a great practice run for future years. Plus, you're in there for 3 hours, so why not try your best for all of it? It'll make time go quicker. Don't stress yourself out though, it's basically like an IQ test, and it doesn't test you on coursework or anything.

Basically the only prep you can do for the GAT is look at past ones to see the structure of the assessment. I think the GAT can unnerve people because it's not something you can study for. Think of it as something like a reasoning/IQ test. The only time you need to concentrate/think about the GAT is when you're actually doing it :)

It's also often called explanatory. You're merely presenting the information provided on the page, and not your opinion (that's reserved for section two).
Hey guys, for the english component of the GAT I know one is an informative piece whilst the other is a persuasive piece. For the informative piece do you basically need to paraphrase the information provided for you or do you have to get creative with the information?Probably a frustrating answer, but you can sort of do what you want :) There's no wrong way to do it, really (unless you're doing a persuasive piece where you shouldn't be). I'd probably recommend getting a bit creative, just to maybe set yourself apart from other people, but as long as you get the job done, it doesn't really matter.

Don't spend too long - probably ~30-35 mins per piece (or longer, depending how much time you want for MC), which will give you plenty of time to do MC - I finished about 15-20 mins early both years.

But I really enjoyed both writing tasks. They were very accessible and easy to manipulate into a short, written piece! It's surprising how quickly 3 hours goes when you're so absorbed in questions and writing. I'm sure English will go as fast, if not even faster! :)

The second prompt on the second writing task was so related to unit 1 eng Lang lol. Language distinguishing humans from animals. I've written three assessment tasks at my school on that exact prompt!
Lets say I do well in the writing and maths tasks -(maybe 40-45 score) but i skipped 8 humanities questions... and got like 30 for that section... will this drag down my other scores if i end up needing derived for english/math/science subjects?
when you say skipped, please tell me you at least filled in a random bubble? (if not, please do that if this happens again in an exam with multiple choice questions! you don't get marked down for wrong answers and you have a 25% of getting a guess right!) i did that for several of the maths ones too. shouldn't impact on a subject that is totally unrelated to the question. if you do a humanities subject, though, and you think you did badly on the humanities sections, maybe don't skip the exam for the derived score omg. i don't think anyone knows exactly how they use the gat for calculations, but it shouldn't contribute to a science subject's score because they're totally unrelated and that wouldn't demonstrate your natural aptitude for that subject, which is really the whole point of the gat. (: so i'm sure you'll be fine haha.
Well I circled C for all the "skipped" questions and when I looked at the art at the end, the last 3 questions were very obviously not C...
i went for C for 69 but i'm awful at art so it's probably wrong, haha. and 70 was super odd so honestly i could see it being any of B, C or D. there were a couple of earlier C's as well, in unit twelve i think? idk. you might get luckier than you think! (:
I agree that the art section was quite ambiguous. Most of the time, that stuff is very dependent on one's own interpretation.
I found the art questions so confusing :/ I'm usually alright at interpreting art but I guess having not done it formally for 2 years caught up to me because I spent so long just like staring at the paintings not even knowing what was going on let alone the emotions and stuff. Maths and science bits were fine though, does Psychology count as a humanities or science subject for VCE?? It's my only 3/4 this year so its all that really matters and I'm worried I messed up the humanities which could be bad

do we GET gat suggested solutions? i guess we could work through it on here, we've all got the questions? but otherwise i don't think they actually give them to us til heaps later :/I'm not sure if GAT solutions are ever released. For the first writing task is just rewriting the information you’re given in an organised way? I don’t really get the point of it.It's basically just checking that you can understand the information it gives you and then organise it in your head and explain it. The information won't be sorted - there'll be lots of different bits of information. Basically you just have to read all of it, sort it into appropriate paragraphs and then explain everything you just read.
I've heard from a GAT examiner herself that examiners typically do not like creative pieces but they at times do give decent marks if it still achieves the criteria. Not sure though...I've never heard of anyone writing a creative for it - it just seems like a waste of time imo.
And as for evidence, does it have to be facts like "40% of people agree that ..." or can it be anecdotal evidence? I am assuming you can't just make up facts.I think anecdotal is Okay.

I hope you’ve worked well on the GAT exam.... it wasn’t the case for me. I don’t know what happened but I just was like “paralysed”. I’ve only done one writing task and haven’t finished the MCQ.
I know that apart from the Derived score the GAT play a minor part in calculating the study score. By what does that mean, what happen if I do really bad on the gat and good on the final exams?? Will it impact my study scores? My ATAR?

Really? I was able to get out of the GAT this year due to illness. So I as worrying if it will affect my end results?I was sick with a fever and a bunch of nasty symptoms the day of the GAT back in Year 11, while I was doing U3/4 Psych. While they did state that it was unusual I was away for the GAT on my transcripts (saying something about being results being unavailable for illegitimate reasons or something), despite the fact that I did produce a medical certificate to my school and assumed VCAA would've had that on their records, there wasn't any effect as I was present for my end of year Psych U3/4 exam. Basically, VCAA'll think it odd, but you won't be in huge trouble, as long as you sit the final exam (although, if you have a bad day on the exam day, uh...).
I still plan to do it next year though.
With Writing Task 1, would a topic sentence count as presenting an argument? E.g. Saying 'Music is a prominent part of many Australians' lives.' Then following up with some of the stats provided about how 'Every year more Australians attend live music events than sporting events.' Or introducing some famous albums by saying, 'A few notable albums include...' I guess my question is: will these adjectives be viewed as being opinionated?
I also find it difficult to relate some bits of information together without somehow referring to some implicit details that I know they have in common. So if someone can share any tips on how to improve coherency, that would be greatly appreciated.
Lastly, for the second writing task, should I write the statement(s) that I intend to write about above my main piece? Or will they judge my writing based on how clearly it presents the statement(s)?

I used pretty much all the information to write a creative piece on a daughter whose late father was a chess master and liked to spout chess facts back in 2014 (my Year 12). The piece was quite well-received.

The only thing I remember from the GAT 2014 were the writing tasks, because I hadn’t written in those styles since Year 10, as I was doing English Language. Writing Task 1 required you to express your ideas about a range of pictures that they gave you relating to the benefits of music.They said that you should not present an argument.
I wrote a creative piece where a son wants to go to music camp and the father said no. Then the son starts firing the benefits of music and the father rebuts his points. However, he finally convinces the father to allow him to go to music camp. Does this count as presenting an argument? If so, does this mean my writing piece is not valid?

I was looking through past GAT papers, and the writing sections are really confusing me? Is anyone else on the same page I am? Writing task 1 seems more understandable than 2, what do you even need to do? Are you arguing whether the statements are true or false? And in task 1, do you just literally have to write down the important information, or is there more to it?

The papers say that you can write down the information however you want (so that can be informative) so how would you go about doing it informatively without actually copying it all down exactly, I don't think doing it creatively would suit me
Has anyone used Checkpoints for the GAT? Is it worth getting, seeing as the GAT doesn't directly affect your results?

This is because due to lockdown the way sacs are run have been seriously impacted and every school is doing very very different things. But whether it holds more importance than sacs or not, it's best to do really well in the GAT because say lockdown for yours or anyone's school occurs during exams because of a positive case, they can use the GAT to give you a derived exam score. Please take this with a grain of salt though because I haven't asked any VCAA examiners haha ;D

That would be really unfortunate because some people do terribly in the GAT but end up getting 40+ study scores!I think that's because many people don't study/ practise for the GAT (this is my first year for the GAT so I'm really nervous hahah). In my opinion, you can only really practice for the first part (I think that was it - the one where you categorise and write up information into a report, no argument.) I think that learning to set out related ideas and form logical connections can be got more used to (if that makes sense) by practise - even just, how would I put these into a logical flow? But I don't know.

For me (back in the day), I know that I hadn’t in a long time, as I was studying English Language, which doesn’t really touch those types of writing until later on in the year (or would’ve been if you did the GAT on its original date back in June). Even then, I only did one or two practise pieces to get used to writing that way again. But it’s up to you.

So my school is kinda pushing us to do at least 10 writing tasks (so 5 Writing Task 1 and 5 Writing Task 2) and I have two questions;
1. Is it worth stressing over to do so many practice tasks?
2. What is the best way to tackle these writing tasks? Task 1 looks like a mess and task 2 is just ??? what am I meant to write?
3. (I know i said two but i'm not bothered to change two to three) For both tasks, is there a certain way to write the piece? Like is task 1 meant to be creative and task 2 has to be persuasive? That's what I'm getting and I'm really sitting here confused af lol.
I've looked at a couple of past GAT papers and everything just kind of just goes over my head and I can't stop thinking about how writing task 1 always looks like a mess

You can sell the grade 2 rocks for $1200 so at $80/cubic metre that is 15 cubic metres of rocks
You then need to look at the split. The 15 cubic metres is 25% whilst the third run is 75% of it. So it is a 1:3 ratio thus the amount of rocks crushed to 10mm is 45 cubic metres.
Once again there is another split this time 40% of the rocks go to become grade 3 rocks. So the total amount is 0.4 x 45 = 18 cubic metres.
To see how much you can sell it for you use the "dollars per cubic metre" from the stem which is $90/cubic metre for grade 3 rocks. So 90 x 18 = $1620 which is A.
Can anyone please help me? I know the GAT doesn't really 'matter' but I can't help stressing and getting nervous over it. Have you checked out English Lab on YouTube ?they have sample responses for both writing tasks written by a GAT assessor . Remember from at what least I know the GAT can only help you it cannot bring you down !
