Might be a stupid question, but is wearing shorts allowed in chemistry practicals? (Doing chem2 over summer)

Yes, I've done it before. The only requirements are closed-up shoes, glasses and hair tied-up.

Can the science electives here be any subject that uni melbourne offers related to science?
For example for a Human structure and function major can I take a physics subject as a science elective?
Or do these science electives have to be related to our major.

Science electives can be anything that the university classes as a science subject. I've got friends majoring in Human Structure and Function who are doing computer science electives, you can choose whatever science subjects you want, as long as you meet the requirements (pre-requisites and the level limit as there are limits on how many level 1, 2 and 3 subjects can be taken).

I mean in Semester 1 last year I wore shorts in the pracs, and one prac I spilled a few drops of 2M HCl on my bare skin. I went to the people in charge of the entire first year lab (it was stinging and painful) and they got wet paper towels to wipe it off until it was no longer stinging (only a few drops so). While there they were debating with themselves whether long pants or shorts would have been better. Long pants means a layer of protection before the skin, but if it gets wet with chemicals it's much harder to get out, so the bad chemicals stay against your skin for longer, but shorts mean it's easier to clean up, but easier to get spilt on in the first place? They hadn't reached a consensus, though, but it's been food for thought for me all year since.

So yeah, TLDR, wearing shorts in chem pracs is allowed. Good luck!

What is the realistic possibility of Melbourne Selection ranks increasing significantly? Specifically for Science that has stayed around 85 ATAR for the last 2 years

Quite unlikely but possible. But I really wouldn’t expect it to jump above 87 or anything. Cohorts generally do not vary THAT much over years. I also think UoM keeps adding more and more spots to courses like science and Biomed making the cut off even lower. There was a time a 99+ was needed for Biomed!

unlikely to happen - science is usually quite stable at around ~85-86
