edit for clarity: It just feels so awkward and strange. I can use chopsticks, but when people expect you to use a "bowl spoon", I feel like I have to tip it all over my face before I can actually get a decent drop in my mouth. What is the technique?

Hmm, I usually just lift the spoon barely high enough and just sip it. (Or I don't and I just bend my head over a little instead.) The spoon becomes unnecessary once the soup gets cool enough.
Unless you have noodles or something in your soup, in which case you use the spoon in your left hand and use it to make sure that the noodles you have on your chopsticks don't fall back into the bowl again.
(Tbh, just like how you have a fork in your LH and a knife in your RH, you do the same with the spoon and chopsticks)
