First Year Camps...Worth it???

Hi everyone,

I wanted to see if anyone knows of or has been to first year camps. I have the chance to attend the commerce first year camp at monash or the law one, but probably leading towards the law one.

They don't tell you much about the camps, but I just want to ask is it worth it? I have heard from some people the law camp is fun, but then others have said it is just a massive drunk fest and not very worthwhile...

Keen for other opinions/experiences of others

Thanks so much!  :)

It is a drunk fest... but that doesn't mean it can't be fun :P

Personally I thought it's something you need to experience once in your life (but I probably won't be going back again!)

It's definitely a drunk fest. A friend went to a Host Scheme camp and there was quite a lot of drinking. Supposedly the faculty camps are much worse. If that's not your thing and you're not going with people similar to you, I wouldn't recommend it.

It's definitely not my thing so I didn't go. If it appeals though, give it a go! :)

Hahaha yeah I'm all good with drinking. What if you don't know anyone that is going? Should you go with at least one friend? Or do most people on the camp not know anyone?

Because you didn't go, did you find that at the start of the semester in lectures etc there were already established friend groups? And also would you be going with at least one friend? If I go, I won't know anyone... :(

I've never been to any, but every first and even second year camp I have heard of was either a massive drunk fest, pairs of horny young adults hooking up in corners, or both.

I'm not a huge drinker so was never my thing, but hey, I'm pretty far from a party animal  :o

If it sounds like fun to you then you should go even if you don't know someone! First year camps, everyone is in that boat, you'll make friends fast I'm sure ;D

Woops, I should have clarified. I'm also a first year student so I can't say if the camps have helped to establish friend groups, I would say probably not though. My friend went and she didn't know anyone and she met a couple people, so if you're comfortable with going by yourself I see no reason not to. :)

Thanks. Despite your friend not knowing anyone when she went, were most people - if not all - going with at least a couple of friends in the same course? That they knew from high school, of course.

That is probs the part I'm most anxious about...not going with anyone I know...just solely by myself.

i went on one of the camps in first year and i knew 2 other people who went but we split up immediately "the bus seating forced us to be separate" and we literally barely communicated for the rest of the camp we just kept making new friends everywhere. definitely something you have to do at least once.

i went on the science camp one and it kind of reminded me of what Nickelodeons camp orange except with nudity and everyone being drunk 24/7

completely unrelated but fun fact I was almost on camp orange in year 6 haha. made it to the interview stage then they found out my team mate was clinically deaf and wouldn't be able to participate in the water activities because of her hearing aid  :P
