Title: Scaling and Subject Selection
Post by: 006896 on March 07, 2018, 06:16:44 pm
Hi all,
It's been 6 weeks into Yr 11, and I'm struggling! My current subjects are
3U Maths
3U Eng
Chem
Phys
Eco
Mod His.
Originally, I thought I would love Eco and I thought Phys would be easy since my maths is pretty good. But now, I have lost my love for Eco and Phys is doing my head in with how difficult it is!
I don't want to drop a subject yet - I want to wait until Yr 12 to drop down to 12 units or 11 Units.
Some of my friends have been telling me that I have made a terrible decision in choosing 'hard' subjects because I have no 'fall-back' subject on which I can do well easily, and get a good mark easily. I think what they have said makes sense. I'd need to work twice as hard to do well in these subjects, than my friends who are doing Beginners Japanese and CAFS, who can do well without trying so hard.
So what should I do? Is this true? Is it possible to do well with my combination of subjects without tutoring?
Thanks!

Hey hey! Really bummed to hear you are struggling - Don't stress though! Year 11 is about developing good habits, your marks don't count towards your HSC anyway so the focus should be on figuring out what works for you. It's supposed to be tough to start with!

Ultimately, if you had chosen 'easier' subjects then the (perhaps) higher marks would be offset by poorer alignment/scaling. Equally, people with easier subjects might have better scaling if they do something harder, but their raw marks would likely be lower because they are doing something they aren't keen on. It works both ways. This is why you should pick subjects you enjoy and want to invest time in, that's the way to do well in the HSC. To actually enjoy (to some extent) your stuff.

You can definitely hang on to 14 units until Year 12 - It won't do you any harm unless you let it stress you out! And once you are there, drop what you enjoy least - That is always my advice :)
