VCE CHINESE SL & SLA Q&A THREAD

What is this thread for?
If you have general questions about the VCE Chinese SL & SLA course or how to improve in certain areas, this is the place to ask! 👌

Who can/will answer questions?
Everyone is welcome to contribute; even if you're unsure of yourself, providing different perspectives is incredibly valuable.

Please don't be dissuaded by the fact that you haven't finished Year 12, or didn't score as highly as others, or your advice contradicts something else you've seen on this thread, or whatever; none of this disqualifies you from helping others. And if you're worried you do have some sort of misconception, put it out there and someone else can clarify and modify your understanding!

There'll be a whole bunch of other high-scoring students with their own wealths of wisdom to share with you, including TuteSmart tutors! So you may even get multiple answers from different people offering their insights - very cool.

To ask a question or make a post, you will first need an ATAR Notes account. You probably already have one, but if you don't, it takes about four seconds to sign up - and completely free!

Are there any VCE Chinese SL/SLA Unit 1/2 Books? (Just for VCE)?
Like Cambridge Specialist Math 1/2 3/4 books?
Anyone know? And should schools be using them?

Thanks

Sorry for all these questions ^.^

The book is good for increasing ur vocaubulary, as there’s 15 writing pieces(of different writing styles) in it, with some complex vocabulary at times. I’m completing chinese Sl unit 3/4 next year so I wouldn’t be able to answer the next few questions.

Is this thread still active? I was wondering if anyone could give me some feedback for a persuasive essay I scored 13/20 on. I've re-written it with my teacher's feedback but I'm always open to more constructive criticism. Thanks.

Any suggestions and/or criticism would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hey guys, I am currently doing Chinese Second Language Unit 4, I'm aiming for a 35 or so raw study score but I haven't been doing too well lately : (
My average SAC scores are 80-89%. Assuming that I get 80-89 for my SAC and my exam, is it still possible for me to get a 35 (or at least above 30) raw study score? I am ranked second or third in my class

This seems fine to me, but it depends on your class of course. IF you pulled those scores for your exam though you'd be absolutely fine for 35.

Hey AN!
How early should I start preparing for my General Conversation and Detailed Study? I heard that there will not be such a big change with the study design other than the translation part being removed. Also, any rough idea of how long each should be?
Thanks!

People generally start writing their first drafts for their scripts as soon as they start 3/4 (some even earlier), and add to it throughout the year. There is of course no harm in starting a bit later (I started my scripts a month before the exam and still pulled a decent score).

Regarding length, the actual oral exam is really short (only 15 minutes), but as you have no idea what questions they could ask, it's best to prepare as many as possible. I did Chinese at XJS where we were recommended to have at least 50 questions for each.

Hey guys,
Since it's getting pretty close to the oral exams, I was wondering if anyone had any tips for the oral and could tell me what experience they had with their oral/how was it like?
Thanks!

Hey guys,

Random question, but are we allowed to write in pencil for the exam? Our teacher, who is quite experienced, said we can, but it just seems odd since you have to write in pen for most other subjects.

Thanks in advance!

Safer to just write in pen. The reason VCAA wants you to write in pen is because exams are scanned and they show up clearest when written in pen as opposed to pencil. If you must write in pencil then use one that’s really dark, but pen is the much safer option.

hi i'm new here  :)
i was wondering how hard chinese sl would be as i've heard that since there's a lot of ppl who have chinese backgrounds doing it, the competition level would be very high and it would be harder to get a good score.
i've done chinese in singapore from primary 1 to 4 btw and am doing some now
