Title: Victorian Selective Entry Exam
Post by: 1729 on September 09, 2020, 12:18:37 pm
The current ammendments have been made on the exam;

Examination date is either 14th or 15th, applicants will be advised which date they are required to sit the exam.

Given the later examination dates, several adaptations have been made to the selection process to facilitate a shortened selection period that will give certainty to families and schools regarding offers. These include:

The creative writing subtest will be removed to reduce the required time to complete assessment.
There will be three rounds of offers with 48 hours available to accept or reject an offer in each round.

All offers made within the Principal’s Discretion process will be made directly at the same time as first round offers. No interviews will occur as part of this process.

There will be only one alternative exam day for students who are unwell. Applicants must complete the illness/misadventure form by 17 November. The alternative examination will occur on Tuesday 24 November. Please refer to the updated information pack -  https://www.education.vic.gov.au/Documents/parents/select-entry-information-pack_updated_September_2020.docx

Important dates:
Offers will be distributed from 14th - 22nd December 2020.
Examination results (superiors, above, high etc..) will be released on the 21st of December 2020.

Continuing on with the conversation.
and sometimes they get things wrong, like they won't have a single right answer,
This week I knew I was right because it was a simple equation and they had no right answer so then I used a calculator and there was no right answer
Yeah thats true, and it also disrupts a lot of time because you are trying to wonder why you none of your answer match with any of the options.

Good luck on the exam and it is really infuriating with the typos. I'm applying for Suzanne Cory.
Good luck to you too, Suzanne Cory is my second preference.

Also guys, what campus do y'all go to?
I go to Braybrook, and been getting around 65-70 for reading, and 80-85 for the other components. How are you all going?

When I first started I was so dumb and would get 60-70 average or even less.

I started JAC last year just wondering did you have to do a test to go to JAC, because I was the only person at my campus who had to do a test?
I've been getting 80-85 on reading and 75-85 for others

I think I'm the only one applying from my school

Just 5% of your year level is given entry

I’m not really sure, there’s only 2 people including me applying from my school. I think it’s harder to get in if you’re from a competitive school and a lot of people r doing the test because of the 5% rule where only 5% of your cohort can be accepted, so even if you get 5 superiors, if nearly everyone in your cohort received 5 superiors as well and had higher marks then it would be hard to get accepted. While fo you go to a non competing school and only 2 people are applying you can get in with say 3 superiors. That’s what I heard but I’m not 100% sure.

Then that would mean 20 students would be able to get an offer from your school I think.

How do you know if there is only 5 people applying? There is 400 students in your year 8 cohort, you physically asked every single student?
Title: Re: Selective Entry Casual Chat

It's up to 5%. So if your result isn't ranked high enough and you are the ONLY one from your school applying you still won't get a place.

My school has two campuses, and in my campus there are 5 people applying. I know because I asked the smart kids if they were. I'm not sure about the other campus though.

Hi,
A quick tip I found for all my JAC classes is watching the replay. Instead of taking 3 hours of my time this method takes max 1 hour. I also do the classwork first to get a good understanding because the teachers always skip the classwork or give the answers straight away. SO yeah. I would highly recommend watching the recording as it saves time that you could be using for classwork.

Thanks for this quick tip, what selective school are you applying for? Do you watch the explanations, I watch the explanations just for a few tips and tricks. For mathematics and numerical reasoning, explanations are really useful.

Hey again
I usually just mark my work and listen to the stuff i got wrong. For me maths is really strong so i tend to not listen as much because i have already learnt the stuff before. I am average at English not including reading comp so i tend to listen more often as there were a lot of aspects which i was unfamiliar with.
I recommend watching the recording and paying attention to the parts which were difficult but skip the parts which were right.

Did you guys see the mess the kids made on the board a couple of lessons ago?

Also i have been averaging 28/40 to 33/40. Is this a good score for JAC. I am doing the test next year.

There really is no telling to which marks are good and which marks are bad because it's about how others do in their tests. But you seem to be doing well.

Advice:
Preparing for the exam:

- Take 10-minute breaks
- Go out and enjoy the weather (exercise, make sure to take your vitamins)
- Try breaking up the components, if you are struggling with few topics in maths then use Khan Academy, youtube and keep
practising till you understand the concept
- Don't stress, don't panic!
- Enjoy life-like normal, Focus on the good things

Hey people.
After my Dad finished work and showed me this article he got from the herald sun paper (page 12)

Here is what it says, if you are unable to read the article on the website or see it off the image.

Quote from: Claire Heaney Herald Sun
Victoria’s smartest kids’ future in doubt as selective entry schools’ entrance exams postponed

Entry to highly-selective Mac Robertson Girls’ and Melbourne High is like snaring a golden ticket to VCE glory. But entrance exams have again been postponed due to COVID-19, throwing the plans of 3500 hopefuls into limbo.

More than 3000 of the state’s smartest kids are in limbo as the Year 9 entry exam to the state’s best government schools has been postponed for the second time.

There are around 3500 applicants for the selective entry high school examination to attend Mac. Robertson Girls, Melbourne, Nossal and Suzanne Cory high schools each year.

The unzoned schools, in Albert Park, South Yarra, Werribee and Berwick, are appealing for parents looking for an elite education at a fraction of the cost of private schooling and parents who don’t think their gifted child is being catered for in their current school.

Entry is at Year 9 level and some parents shift their children from higher priced private schools if they win a hotly sought place at one of these schools.

There are less than 1000 places up for grabs across the schools which range are single sex and co-ed.

A Department of Education spokeswoman told the Herald Sun that the just announced road map to reopening meant the September 19 exam would be postponed.

“We know many students are anticipating this exam and we will provide applicants, their families and schools with further information on an alternative date shortly with as much advance notice as possible,” the department said.

Many families set their children for the exams several years out, employing tutors to help them win a place to the elite schools which are not zoned and draw students from every postcode.

In a ranking of 2019 median VCE study scores Mac. Rob was seventh and Melbourne High 13th out of 650 schools. Nossal was 35 and Suzanne Cory 58.

A parent, who did not want to named, said the delay left her son, who attends a medium-fee private school near their home, in limbo. The family has to give term's notice that they are leaving their current school. Failure to do that will incur a fee.

While the mother said there was no guarantee her child would win a place at one of the schools, he was recognised as high achieving and it had been suggested he try for a place at a select-entry school.

The exam is held at a big venue such as the Royal-Exhibition building, so it is not allowed due to pandemic restrictions on gatherings. In a normal year students are notified of an offer by late August or September after sitting the entrance exam in June.

Any thoughts on this?

Also, if you haven't heard already, the department of education is now giving an option for students to withdrawl from the selective entry high school application process;

"All applicants retain the right to withdraw from the Selective Entry High School examination process at any point. Following these changes, the deadline to withdraw and receive a full refund of the application fee has been extended to Monday 21 September 2020. Please indicate your request to withdraw by email to the Selective Entry Unit at [email protected]."

Reading the article, I think there may be actually quite a few people choosing to withdrawl from the exam.
Will this put us at an advantage or disadvantage?

My tip is to not worry about the end result. If you give it your all then you will be achieving the top score that you can reach. Don't worry about what a good mark is because if you aim for that you may get lower. If you aim for higher then if you get lower you will still be in. As for tips for numerical reasoning. A massive boost is doing a lot of mock exam and looking over all of them and finding common errors. This will boost your scores a lot.  You will also find that there are patterns, for example Fibonacci sequence and exposure to these will give you an edge in the exam. I am not to experienced because i too am doing the test next year so some of the more experienced people can help more.
I really hope this helps you and good luck for your exam

I don't think you should aim for a certain score, because when you do reach the goal you stop trying just give yourself a small goal and when you reach the goal make a harder goal.

Yeah, i have found the JAC tests harder and if you do well on them and you keep improving you are set to get a superior. You can't get good scores and stop there and expect to get a superior. If you keep working hard and focus on all the subjects you are doing your best and if you do that than the outcome will be your best. One last tip, if you get bad scores on JAC tests don't feel down because the tests are harder. Just push yourself to do better and achieve the highest you can.

My brother is my biggest support. So he tells me a lot and prepares me. I hope to share his knowledge with others because he is a massive help to me. He told me about atar notes and got me onto this forum.
But yeah i am sharing the amazing knowledge he gives me
I try to help everyone i see but i am not as helpful as others who know more
But like thanks a lot like you're very helpful and quite encouraging

If I'm being honest, I'm feeling quite nervous for the examination. I don't feel as if I've prepared enough, but at the same time I just want to get it over and done with.

Yeah, when i used to think about the test i would literally cry because i was so nervous about the test. I think most people think that the test is the biggest test of their life (me included) but you can go to any school you want to and get a really high ATAR. My mindset to going to MHS is the opportunity's. I am a massive cricket fan and apparently they have a really good team. I myself am really nervous but even if i don't get in I will know that i tried my best and gave it my all. So yeah. A little amount of stress can make you work hard but dont fret and take it like a weight on your back. Work hard and try your best. You may feel better

I guess if their parents forced them to then that is sad but if they believe in working hard and like to work then that is actually pretty cool. I would look up to kids who love to work hard and don't have to be told what to do.

Yeah, I would also recommend the Spectrum " How to write a persuasive or creative essay in 15 mins."
I would also try to do every single JAC essay even if it is boring. I did the JAC one last week and it was so simple and cliche which made it hard to pick a story that might impress the people who read it. I found the cliche topic to be amazing as it makes you think outside the box

Mate nothing to worry about. I am in Nossal Year 10 and I got in Year 9 with only 6 months prep for the test. I even know a few people who didn't go to any external centres and still got in. All you need is a strong sense of belief and determination and you're good.  :)

Yes, when I did the test I believe they announced the last 5 minutes (I don't think they did the last 1min? But maybe my memory is just bad ahah), but don't always rely simply on the announcements because while doing the test, time really flies. I'm sure many of you already are aware of this but please wear a watch (not digital) since it really helps you figure out how long you are taking and time certain questions. Sometimes it helps with the stress of a time-limit too!

Reading, Verbal and Maths were a lot easier than I had anticipated despite english being my weakness. Anxiety got to me when I did numerical, and I guessed around half of the test. Definitely didn't do good at all in numerical.

Anyways if I were to order my tests from easiest to hardest it be
Reading - Finished the whole thing
Maths - Finished the whole thing
Verbal - Guessed about 20
Numerical - Guessed 20-25 of the test. Hopefully I guessed correctly  ;)

EDIT:
Actual Scores
Reading: Above average
Mathematics: Superior
Numerical: Above average
Verbal: Above average

Superior is the highest band, and above average is directly below superior.

Unfortunately these scores were inadequate to secure a position into a selective high school for 2021.

Maths was insanely hard. Most of the practice tests I did didn’t cover the triangle questions that were in there, and I didn’t have enough time to finish the last 10 questions

VR was not too bad, probably the second hardest but I still finished

NR was 3rd, finished and checked back on some questions

RC was a breeze, finished around halftime and did the test twice

If I had to guess what I got in each, I’d say:
VR - Superior, all of my friends were saying that it was as hard for them as maths was for me. I was the only person in my friend group who finished

NR - HA or superior

RC - HA. Everyone else found it as easy as me

M - A or AA. I told you guys that that test fucked me.

Hi! They have a lot of valuable info that really helped me! Overall, Mac.rob has quite a few pros and cons, but nonetheless I'm sure it's something that you will really enjoy. It's so full of opportunities and new experiences, and I know many people say that, but it's actually true. Congrats on making it in, hope this helps :))

I really do hope that all the people who have not gotten an offer yet deserve to get an offer. You all have tried so hard and helped others on ATAR notes. I personally am doing the test next year and I am actually excited for the test because I have tried my hardest and I will continue to try my hardest. If you have tried your hardest then if you don't get an offer then you tried your best and you know that you could not have done better.

I really hope that you guys get an offer though.

P.S  Congratulations to the people who got an offer an enjoy being at a selective school
