Hey!
Fellow Class of 2021 student here. What subjects are you taking this year? :)
P.S. Is this going to be a JMSS thread? You can change the title by clicking on the modify button on your post.
im a year 9 taking visual com and duke of ed as electives and its pretty cool, buT JMSs electives are cooler.Great electives. I'm taking French, nanotechnology, and drama (because why not? 8) ). The JMSS electives sound pretty cool indeed!
edit: what about you
How do people know their in the class of 2021 when they haven't even got the results from their test yet. ??? ???We could make this the Class of 2021 discussion thread. :)

Hi Guys,
Josheph41 said that we should create a class of 2021 topic as it is part of the AN tradition. So here is my first ever new topic.
Feel free to have a discussion and general talk.
Hope I didn't screw up something badly! p.s. The chat is changed from JMSS Class of 2021 to Class of 2021BEST YR 12 CLASS EVER
I can't wait to take the JMSS elective subjects, one of them is definitely going to be Nanotech.I get to take a nanotech unit next year!
Great work! Thread looks perfect to me.
P.S. What exactly is nanotechnology?
awh man, ive been really interested in nanotechnology since last year due to the coverage of that topic in science hhhh (oh and i take japanese too)What was it like and what kind of content did you cover? We spent half of term 1 learning definitions to do with nanotechnology. We've done hardly any pracs and only shallowly touched on concepts. Hope it’s better for you at JMSS.
Our school doesn't offer any science electives so like... yay :|Sadly, photography is a year ten elective at my school. It would be fun.
I take French, Dance, Photography and IT.
Also very random question, I've had this discussion with many of my friends, and I seem to literally be THE ONLY ONE that knows what VCE subjects they will be taking, and general ideas about the future, unis etc. Anyone here know what VCE units they'll take? Or am I the one and only lunatic everywhere?
Nanotechnology is the application of science and engineering conducted at the nanoscale. It can be used to do things like manipulate atoms in a glass so that it doesn't break when dropped. I guess I'm a lunatic too! (My mum calls me the walking Department of Education :'() None of my friends know much about the whole VCE/uni system either.
WHAT ARE U DOING IN VCE FELLOW LUNATIC
Why not make a thread about what subjects people will be doing in Year 10 and VCE? ;D
Lol I guess I could try that?... (still kinda new to this atarnotes thing tbh)
edit: I MADE IT
Hi,Class of 2021 student here! And you are doing two 3/4 subjects in Year 10?!?!?!!? If this is so, I advise you to put all your effort in them because I assume you would have more time? As you haven't started other 1/2? I wish you the best of luck next year and hope to hear more about your workload as I am going to be completing two units 3/4 subjects in 2020.
Any class of 2021 people doing units 3&4 subjects next year? I'm kind of worried about the workload haha.

I find your signature intriguing haha. At this stage, what are you leaning toward for subjects in 2021?Hey! That is a tricky question that I believe should be dependent on my next year's performance in Math Methods.
I expect that we'll move this thread to the year 10 sectionOk thanks for merging but if I edit, how will anyone see that I've posted?

Hey y'all. :)]
Has anyone started any 1/2s? I started mine today and it just feels super weird being in classes with people who are complete strangers who all know each other!

]At some schools VCE subjects are started at the end of the previous year. Eg, year 11 classes starting in the last couple of weeks of year 10.
Starting 1/2s at the end of a school year?
Same when I started bio 1/2. I found that it got less weird as the year progressedI see. That's a little weird but I wished my school did that for me to get a headstart :[

I just finished my first week of two 1/2s (Methods and Biology). It gets easier being in a class with people you don't know very much if a. you feel comfortable with your teacher, or b. some of your friends are in the same class. So far it doesn't seem the workload will be too heavy as long as you put in a bit of effort outside of school hours.
By the way, really envy those of you that get to do 3/4s in year 10, my own school even refused my request to start physics 1/2 stating it was too hard :(
Hey guys, let's bring some life back into this thread, shall we?
It seems like it's been quite stagnant for a while now.
Why don't we start by discussing our ATAR goals and how we may achieve them?
I plan on doing these 6 subjects:
- Algorithmics (HESS)
- Chemistry
- English Languge
- Maths Methods
- Specialist Maths
- Physics
I'm somewhat realistically aiming to achieve ~40 Raw in all of them.
Though, I think that Physics could be in the mid-late 40s and so could methods. The rest is likely a ~40.
English is my downfall so I think that realistically I could expect a 35 raw and similarly for Spesh if not slightly higher.
Goal ATAR: 98<
I know that this is quite ambitious, but if you aim high and miss, you'll still be higher than if you'd aimed lower!
I hope others share their thoughts and goals! :)
- Psych (3/4 in Year 11) - The brain fascinates me. I read the study design and I was drawn to psych :)I used to have an ATAR goal of 98+, but the way I view it now is that I should just try my best, put in the effort, study regularly and healthily and be surprised by the number I get. Hoping it's a good surprise but either way, it's always a learning opportunity no matter how it turns out. Aiming for science/arts or science/biomed @ Monash with the intention of doing teaching, med, or maybe even dentistry, veterinary medicine, research, or psychology afterwards. I'm clearly undecided! :D
- Health (3/4 in Year 11) - Interested in health and wellbeing in Australia and the rest of the world.
- Chem - Chem really tickles my whiskers. Chem pracs are cool.
- Methods - Maths is fun when I understand it. Nuff said.
- Bio - Human biology is awesome. Learning about organisms and their functions is fascinating to me.
- English Language - Language acquisition and language change sounds like something I would be interested in learning about. Really looking forward to studying EngLang.
We actually have a thread for discussing our plans for VCE! :) Mine is below (maybe insert physics or specialist in there because I've developed a recent interest in astrophysics/astrobiology):I used to have an ATAR goal of 98+, but the way I view it now is that I should just try my best, put in the effort, study regularly and healthily and be surprised by the number I get. By the way, @lm21074, your link doesn't actually link to the thread you mentioned :)
In terms of future plans I only roughly know I would want a career in a S.T.E.M field. I would probably study science at either Melbourne or Monash (with a potential double degree at Monash). With my broad range of interests I could realistically go into many fields - such as research science/mathematics, engineering, medicine, field biology, economics etc. I feel like I better decide soon haha!
Not like I'm biased at all (just to be clear: I am), but you should also look at the science degree I'm studying from Monash global challenges :)
Eyyy, nice to see some activity here! :)
I know you were directing this to turtlesforeveryone but I had a look for myself and I found it really interesting. I love the concept, I think that's mainly due to my passion for the sciences.
@lm21074
For my future plans, I'd say that they are almost exactly the same as turtlesforeveryone. I too, have a diverse range of interests but would likely go into the STEM field (which, yes, id still quite broad). I think in terms of University, I'd likely go to Monash or Melbourne University. A large deciding factor in my decision is whether I get accepted in KLD or Monash Scholars (or neither :P).
@aspiringantelope
Great goals! Where were you thinking of studying abroad? Good luck towards acheiving your ultimate dream, not that think you need it! :)
Thanks! Currently not sure about the university but I'm thinking about studying Biomedicine abroad, just to have some feel of being independent and meet new people.

Hi! Thought I’d share my subjects here ;D
2020
HHD 3/4
2021
ENGLISH
METHODS
LITERATURE
PSYCHOLOGY
BIOLOGY
I’m aiming for high marks, but I don’t have any numbers in mind.
I do have a goal for HHD - 45+
ooooh what do you think of hhd
Hey guys, on behalf of @turtlesforeveryone I would like to ask you this question :Just letting you know though, from what I know this requires a second order PDE , the diffusion equation. Any help would be appreciated :)
Say we have a 2 metre long, solid metal pole. At t=0 the temperature of the pole can be described as 1-x^2.
The edges of the pole are fixed at 0 degrees Celsius.
What is the temperature at the middle of the pole at 10 seconds?
Wow ya'll are so ambitious! I'm just looking to pass and find myself a rich husband. :'(
any other class of 21'ers doing a 3/4 this year? How are you feeling about that?no, i'm sticking to doing two 1/2 subjects. which 3/4 are you doing? hoe have you found it? feeling prepared for the exam? ;D
Heyo people! I'm late but better late than never right?? haha
I'm planning to do:
2019:
Bio (1/2)
2020:
Bio (3/4)
English (1/2), they don't do lit here, but like I'm not that great at English anyway lol
Methods (1/2)
Psychology (1/2) - I tried to ask for 3/4 but the teacher was like like it's too hard to juggle two so here I am crying on the floor hahahahah
Chemistry (1/2) - I already know this is going to be a mystery to me oof, scared, to say the least
Sinhala (1/2) - hopefully, a 40+ in 3/4 since I'm positive my parents would disown otherwise... no pressure hahaha
Hopefully, I can talk to you guys soon! I'm still a noob at this sorry...

//Great to meet you yesh! I'm also doing 3/4 bio next year. How have you been finding the 1/2? I'm really enjoying genetics so I'm kind of sad that there's none of that next year.
Sorry I just saw your reply, I'm doing 3/4 Bio and PE this year, my bio exam is in two days ripppp :-\Are you still feeling a little unprepared? Or are you on top of things? Good luck! ;D
Great to have you here! Welcome to the forum. :) Are you excited for your first 3&4 subject next year?Ahhh excited but I'm a bit scared actually... so much competition but I don't think my last brain cells will survive but haha we'll see.
Welcome to the forums! :)Ooh thank you!! you guys are super welcoming!! ;D
Very similar to the subjects I studied (including doing bio 3/4 (and nothing else) early). VCE can be intimidating but you'll get through it (eventually) and we're here to help - if you have any questions about atarnotes, VCE life, your subjects etc. please feel free to ask :)
Definitely nothing to apologise for and not too late - good luck for your VCE journey!

Bio 3/4 ~All I can say is eww, to all my fellow bio students; I’ll pray for you.
Chem 1/2 ~ I actually love year 10 chemistry so I look forward to this one
Methods 1/2 ~Math is my favourite subject, I wanted to do spesh but they don’t offer at my school ;(
English because I must.
Psychology 1/2 ~ I originally chose legal but idk why I just panicked and changed to psyc.
In 2021 I also plan on taking further 3/4 ;D
I dream of a 99, but I’ll be happy with anything over 85.
When do your exams start? My year 10 exams start next Monday.Good luck with PE today!! My year ten exams start next Wednesday. ;D

Nice to meet you as well, I did bio 1/2 this year. It was alright, but I definitely preferred unit 2 over unit 1.Me too! It's such a shame you don't do genetics in 3/4.
What do y'all do with your free time? No I'm not kidding (but I know that most people don't really feel like they have free time).scroll endlessly through social media and watch netflix lmao
sometimes i'll read and i go to the gym too (:::what do you like to read? ;D also, watching any good shows atm?

Hey!
Fellow Class of 2021 student here. What subjects are you taking this year? :)
P.S. Is this going to be a JMSS thread? You can change the title by clicking on the modify button on your post.
Hi everyone!
This chat is Class of 2021 for everyone and is not just JMSS exclusive.
I can't wait to take the JMSS elective subjects, one of them is definitely going to be Nanotech.
Wait im confused what is JMSS???John Monash Science School (a selective school that specialises in science/math/tech) :)
has everybody finished their holiday hw ?? i haven't eek
has everybody finished their holiday hw ?? i haven't eekyeah, nah
Hiii!! 8)
I have chosen Bio, Design, Drama, English, Legal Studies, General Maths (but i might choose methods and can someone help me out with choosing general or methods)!!
Hi all!
Been a pretty long time, but since school is approaching very quickly, just wondering how everyone will cope with distractions throughout the year whilst focusing on their 3/4 Subject?
I get very distracted every day and honestly cannot finish what I have planned or wanted to.
Anyone have a similar kind of habit?
Hey aspiringantelope!Thank you for your tips, I'll definitely try and download an app on my phone to help me haha.
I have this cheeky habit too haha. The ways I'm trying to cope with distractions are the following:
- Set a timer for 5 minutes and do some work. This usually helps me to get into the flow of work, but if not, I will remind myself of the why behind my subject choices.
- Find out what the distractions are. Something that distracted me for a little while was my phone. On my phone, I downloaded a free app called Your Hour that recorded how much time I was spending (wasting) on my phone (sometimes it was in excess of 4 hours :( ) and on each app, which really helped with pinpointing what I was wasting my time on. The app also has a phone fast option where you cannot use your phone for 2 hours. There are also apps like Forest that are designed to help you stay on task too by using an incentive (like planting a cute little tree!). Airplane mode and putting electronics in a different room / studying in a different room to distractions can be useful too.
There are also browser extensions like StayFocused on Google Chrome which can limit your time on certain sites of your choosing.
- Find out why you are being distracted and address those reasons head on. It might be helpful to use those distractions as a reward for studying! If you enjoy a certain hobby, you don't need to banish it.
- To-do lists to plan study sessions. It is easy to say that you have a SAC soon, but then put off study because you aren't sure how you will do so (if that makes sense). Planning what you will do before can help you ease into study more by having direction.
Sorry for the ramblings! Hope this helps :) All the best for this year (and beyond)!
How are y'all going? :)
coping. ;DAh yes, the workload is something else compared to Year 10 and below! Are you doing anything extracurricular wise? :)
how are you?
Ah yes, the workload is something else compared to Year 10 and below! Are you doing anything extracurricular wise? :)
I had my first HHD SAC today and boy I was stressed about it. But my friends gave me lots of words of encouragement (and doggo pics)! ;D
the workload is definitely different from last year! i’m personally just focusing on school and going to the gym, wbu?I agree! I've been focusing on school and going to St John Ambulance meets as an extracurricular... and the
how’d it go? i also study hhd!
Hey! I'm Paige, I'm in Year 11 in Victoria and I'm new to this forum! I remember finding the electives but also a lot of work!Hello all, good luck in the year of 2021!!!
My subjects are:
VCE English Language unit 1 / English unit 2
VCE French 1&2
Chinese Second Language 3&4
Further Maths
Health & Human Development!
I look forward to chatting with some new people! Good luck for all your VCE classes, SACs, exams etc, but that's still relatively a long way away! - ttyl x
How are you guys going with online learning and your 3/4 subject/s?
Not sure if you guys also do deb in year 11 but what are your schools doing? rescheduling? or have they just cancelled it?
Hey Class of 2021 people!
How's Term 3 faring so far? :)
Ola! Little stressed but alright having home as a comfortable nontoxic environment, although I NEED TO SEE PEOPLE OMGCan feel this. Definitely try zooming (playing online games is very fun w friends and takes your mind off everything and gives you a good laugh) or maybe even going for a 1 hour walk with someone in your 5km radius (socially distanced and wearing masks of course). Getting outside is very helpful and being able to talk to someone is very nice :)
Hi! I'm a year 11 in Victoria and I'm quite new to the whole AN schemeHi Elisabeth!
I completed further maths last year and I'm not doing any year 12 subjects this year, so what's left is:
• 1/2 Maths Methods
• 1/2 Chemistry
• 1/2 Biology
• 1/2 History (20th Century)
• 1/2 French
• 1/2 English Language
• 1/2 Religion and Society
However I'm dropping religion and history next year
I hope I get to talk to some new people especially with Covid
sooooo yeah thats me in a nutshell
- Elisabeth
Hi Elisabeth!
Good job on completing Further Maths in year 10! I am doing it as one of my accelerated 3/4s this year (the other being maths methods) and I am really enjoying it. Do you have a favourite subject? We are doing pretty similar subjects (eng lang, french and chem) which is exciting! My favourite subject is definitely chemistry, it is so interesting to me and I also have an incredible teacher :)
Do you have any future plans? Is there anything outside of academics that you are involved in?
I'm glad that you have joined AN and I hope you enjoy this wonderful platform 8)
Eloise
Hi Eloise! Thanks! I hope you're enjoying further and methods as 3/4s!Sorry for the late reply
My favourite subject at the moment would have to be maths methods, I love my class and I love the logic of maths in general.
I don't exactly know what I want to do in the future, but I think I want to do a science degree (or something along that line) and figure it out from there - but at the moment I'm thinking medicine. What are your plans for the future?
Out of academics I'm a part of the school choir and play tennis. What do you enjoy outside of school? Do you play/keep up with any sports?
How has term 3 been for everyone? I know it has been a bit rough but these past couple weeks I have taken a small step back from studying and focussed on myself and my happiness and I can safely say I am the happiest I have been in months!
How's everyone feeling about going back to school in a couple of days?I for one am extremely excited :). I have found that my mood has been so much better over the past couple of days being able to see my friends for the GAT and our in-school trial exams!
Hey Corey :)
I'm doing the exact same subjects next year, minus psych!
Just out of interest, why biomedicine? :)
Hello :)
I had chronic fatigue for about 5 years. Through physical, mental and spiritual means I have recovered. I want to learn about the body and mind so I can become an expert in fatigue, and spend my life helping others overcome similar challenges to the ones I've faced :)
I feel biomedicine and, the Melbourne degree in particular, will best help me achieve that.
What are your current future plans?
Hey guys :)
My name's Corey.
I will be doing units 3/4 English Language, Methods, Chemistry, Biology and Psychology next year at RMIT.
I'm currently learning the year 11 content for these subject from home.
I aim to study a bachelor of Biomedicine (major in psychology) at Melbourne starting 2022. For this I'll need an ATAR of ~95 or higher.
I am hoping to find someone who is studying these same subjects and has a similar goal to be an accountability partner :)
I've read time and time again that accountability partners have a very positive effect on success outcome.
So basically we will consistently check in with each other throughout this and next year, keeping each other motivated and accountable to effectively working toward our stated goal :)
I'm so glad you've recovered! CFS is tough.
Really great to hear your enthusiasm for Biomed at Melbourne! Have you considered any other courses or are you set on Biomed? Also, are there any careers you've considered / are considering?
Apologies for the semi-rant below!
I used to have a really detailed plan for what my future would hold. Over time though, I've learnt from my own and others' experiences that not really anything is set in stone and things change. Some of my teachers didn't even want to be teachers when they were in Year 11 and 12. Someone I know went from disliking animals and pets to having a dog sleep next to them at night... so what life holds for me, I don't know.
In saying that, I'm really passionate about education and health. For most of my life, I wanted to become a teacher but then got swayed into the healthcare side of things. Now I'm torn haha. Will probably end up doing both or a combination of both. To be honest, my prediction is that I'll pick one and then I will switch into the other, thinking that it is better for me at the time.
So, course wise - probably some kind of generalist degree in science and then I'll go from there. :)
It's like you said, unexpected things happen that change our plans. Right now that course at Melbourne is a meaningful goal for me to aim for. When VCE finishes I'll reassess my options and set a new course :)
My overall mission to use my personal experience to help others is what's driving me though. I don't see that changing soon.
Nice plan. You can do double degrees you know :)
What are your current study goals, and what are your current study habits? Do you think your current level of performance will get you where you want to go?
Hi Corey! We have pretty different subjects, but I’m also studying psychology next year, and I’m (most likely) aiming for the University of Melbourne, too. It’s nice to make a new class of 2021 friend! Looking forward to seeing more about your vce experience ;D
Nice!
Yes, very aware of the double degree option and some are quite high on my preferences, particularly the generalist ones :)
Those are some good questions. Do you mean study goals as in the long term? I don't really have an ATAR goal because I feel as though I would get too caught up in the numbers game. I have an aim that I keep in the back of my mind but will have to refine my study habits a bit to reach that goal haha. When I was in the younger years of high school, I had a goal of getting a 98+ ATAR and 40+ study scores in each subject (my main motivation was to use it to get into a couple of courses I was interested in and tutoring opportunities), but I don't know how realistic that goal is nowmethods hahahahaha.
Study methods for me are mainly just revising consistently (something I have not done much this year) and keeping track of it on a spreadsheet for exams and using to-do lists to help stay organized. In an ideal world, before a SAC, I'd make a checklist with each area to revise and work away at it (either by teaching the wall or other active recall methods (I've tried recording myself speaking the content and making a podcast style clip, flashcards, teaching others, and posters and summary sheets from memory). Then spam practice questions and past SACs. Nothing really revolutionary.tl;drThe process is: understanding the content (making sense of it and asking questions to my teacher) --> learning the content (through the methods described above) --> applying the content to practice questions.
What about you? :)
Hi Victorians,Doing great thanks! (: Long time since this thread has been active haha! And yeah, time flies by...
How are you all doing?
2016 feels like a long time ago doesn't it?
Good luck with year 12 everyone,
Kind Regards

Have a 3/4 exam literally in a few days and it's my first one so I'm hoping I don't do too bad!! I hoped the exams would be easier this year since of COVID, but judging on responses from the math methods exams, I dunno what to expect ;[
Hey!
Fellow Class of 2021 student here. What subjects are you taking this year? :)
P.S. Is this going to be a JMSS thread? You can change the title by clicking on the modify button on your post.
I wish the Queensland Class of 2021 thread was more active :)Hehe!! I think Queensland is like new to like the curriculum? or something, but I'm sure there will be more users from Queensland in the near future!!
I also have my first year 12 exams coming up.
Hey everyone,Hey Snow Leopard! Our transition lasts 2 weeks (ending this week and then summer hols!!!) where we jumped into work! I'm planning to just focus on English and Methods until the end of December and then grind the rest of my subjects in January just because those are my tricky subjects and arguably my most important ones. Also doing the other ones make me panic about Dec 30th so I'm sticking to what doesn't make my heart race lol. Honestly, I'm just excited for school to finish so I can celebrate!
How long did your school's headstart/orientation last? How are you all preparing for next year?
Hey everyone,
How long did your school's headstart/orientation last? How are you all preparing for next year?
hello people
i just made a thread for class of 21 but it already existed! this is why i wear glasses.
anyway can we please make a long thread? how is everyone prepping for year 12?
It’s going along okay for me, I think. I initially had very grand plans of going super ahead, doing many practice exams, spending much time each day doing work. In the end, I’m just doing what needs to be done before the year starts, and if time allows, complete a bit extra. How about you ‘dedformed’?
thanks for asking bean, I'm doing okay:) I do have a VCE journal if you're into reading long winded rants but tl;dr: same.
All my high school years I ditched holiday productivity, "leaving it for y12 cuz that's what's important" but I didn't get anything more than my holiday homework done. This is partly because I couldn't be bothered and partly because I didn't see a point in going ahead anymore. I did some getting ahead for Term 3 in Year 11, but reflecting on it, class just got super boring after that and my grades were still consistent with the rest of the year. At this point I'm chilling so I can get a fresh start for Term 1.
I'm super excited to get things rolling and finally finish (read: escape) school.
random but because you mentioned my username I realised it can be read as "ded formed" instead of "ded-for-med" lol. A Anyway, people call me Penelope on here because of my journal:) Good luck with term 1
How was everyone's first day of year 12?
My first day was on Friday, and I was pleasantly surprised to notice that the impression of students sort of shifts when they reach Year 12. Lots of good luck wishes and supportive conversations (:
I am gonna miss school once I graduate, I can't forget all those memories that I made and the teachers who I really enjoy. I can't believe I am really in year 12.
High School has really taught me who I am and who I want to be as a person going forward.I feel this on a spiritual level. :)
I look back at the beginning of high school (2016) and think wow that was me?!
To think that the dab, PPAP and the mannequin challenge all happened in 2016 blows my mind ;D
2016 doesn't feel so long ago (even though it is so long ago).
I also really can't believe that I am in Year 12.
Year 12 feels a lot like Year 11 but more busy and complicated in content. It feels like more is expected of you and you expect more of yourself. You try to enjoy yourself as much as you can and you try to make the most of every moment and opportunity.
Question for everyone: what are the non-academic traditions your school has for Year 12s?
At our school there will usually be a few dress up days where you come in a costume, in pajamas, e.t.c, there's usually also days where they'll be teacher vs. students sport eventsNice! I hope that you get to do some of those things soon :)
How's everyone feeling approaching the holidays?
How's everyone going?
