Hi everyone, just wondering how many hours a week are taken up by studying medicine(at Monash) in total (classes/ lectures/ pracs/ private study). Also how many hours a week in total is taken up by other degrees such as science or engineering (at Monash)? Is it possible to work many hours a week? Also is it possible to play sport at an elite level while studying medicine or will there not be enough time? Just wanting to gain an insight into the life of a med student, it would be great if any med students could post their time tables.
Thank in advance
I'm not at Monash, but can speak to medicine more broadly. In your earlier years, the amount of contact on campus isn't too bad, although the amount of work you have to do outside to keep up is fairly considerable. There's time to continue to participate in sport and work, but probably less than you'd otherwise be able to do. At UniMelb we're told we can only work eight hours a week, although many find opportunities to do more, particularly if they have flexible work arrangements.
As you transition into your clinical years, the amount of contact becomes more significant. There's a lot of heterogeneity, depending on where you're placed and what rotation you're on. Some rotations are a lot more flexible than others too, but you should expect to be in the hospital from anywhere between 30-80 hours a week, with those rotations on the higher side of that rarer than those on the lower side.
