Anyone know what pharma science is like at monash? anything i should expect?
I did okay in chemistry (31 raw), however for bio I got 45 raw - is this a hindrance? i know pharma is a chem based subject but i hope there's a few bio in there as well :P

sorry, i didn't mean whether my subject scores would be a hindrance to study pharmaceutical science, i meant that my chemistry is average at best, however, my understanding for bio is good, which is why i'm hesitant to start pharmascience with the right mindset cause of my chem :(

Cheers

Hey hey!
You're in luck, I study pharmsci! :)

For the first two years of the course, there's a couple of biology-heavy units as well as chemistry. (Feel free to look through my reviews on the Monash review thread!! ^-^ )

The high score in bio vs low score chem shouldn't be a hinderance- one of my uni pals came in from doing very basic chem in her previous degree (which she ended studying a load of bio) and ended up doing really really well! :)

The pharmsci degree has 3 "specialisations", in which the new format has you specialise in third year. The three specialisations are drug discovery biology (literally 24/7 bio I've heard), medicinal chemistry (24/7 chem) and formulation science (which is chem heavy, but has a few bio elements). I had qualms myself going into pharmsci, I didn't even do bio so the bio subjects scared me however, that hasn't stopped me doing okay in the bio subjects since! :)

Ultimately, once you get pass the first few weeks of first semester, it's really a level playing field, as the content is new to everyone! :)

If you're interested as well, there's usually PASS classes (study sessions with an older student) for the first year chem units :)

Hope this helps and hope this doesn't scare you away from pharmsci yet! ^-^

What happens if you fail the chem units (or fail in general)? I can vaguely remember that I bombed my medicinal studies assignments in VCE.
I can see that you're a chem student as opposed to bio, so what would you rate the 'specialisations' you mentioned out of 10?
How much time do you spend on theory and how much time on practical as well?
Cheers champion :)

I doubt you'd fail, the unit coordinators make it pretty hard to fail unless you put absolutely zero effort! ^-^
However if you fail a unit (by the exam), if you get between 45-49%, you're likely to be offered a supplementary exam, if you fail that you then have to repeat that unit, alongside subjects you're eligible to do in the next year level! :)

Specialisations- formulation I rank #1 (my bias, take with grain of salt), DDB at #2, and medicinal chem #3 (I found a pure hatred for a couple of medchem units, but that's just me)

It depends on the year level, last semester (2nd year, 2nd sem), I spent 6-10 hours/week of lab to around 9 hours of lectures. This semester I'll be having a lot more lab! :)

Anytime, glad to see Parkville kids show on the forum! :)
