I'm doing Chinese SLA 1/2 this year, and I'm finding it difficult to keep up with my classmates.
1. I came to Australia when I was young and have had no schooling in China yet I qualify as SLA. I have to put in twice as much time and effort to get even close to the same results as my peers because my Chinese is pretty average. I can speak fluently, my grammar is fine, but I lack so much vocabulary and my essays need great improvement. I can't come up with stuff on the spot, and for listening tests, I don't write fast enough and often leave out important information (both of which are linked to not-so-good vocab).
2. The study design is new for my year, and I know there are a lot more cultural and political discussion topics for SLA especially, but I don't know anything about China's history/politics, nor am I interested in it.
3. I know it is a very good skill to have in the workforce, but it's not as if I suddenly can't speak Chinese if I don't do it for VCE. I just don't want to do Chinese at the cost of my mental health.
If I don't do Chinese, I'll probably end up doing spesh, which I know also takes up a lot of time but at least I'm slightly more interested in maths and to me, maths is more logical and straightforward.
