Hi, jaffy here. I was wondering how many students are in each tutorial typically?

My commerce and maths ones had 20, and it’d be 20 in a standard classroom, but some could have more depending on room, ESD has 60, and maths computer labs usually combine 2 groups for 40. I also believe science prac labs have more

It is subject dependent and also time slot dependent. I've had tutorials where there have been 40+ students and also tutorials with less than 15.

You can use the timetable: https://sws.unimelb.edu.au/2018/ to see how many people each tutorial allocates for.

Yeah, I've seen those timetables and have actually designed my timetable already (what I hope for anyway). It's just more that I've heard people say they fill up fast, so I was wondering if there was a set maximum in each tute (chem, physics and maths specifically for me). Thanks!

The number directly below the description of the class is the maximum allocated spots. For instances, CHEM10003 will have a 40. This means that there is room for 40 students. Luckily for first year subjects they don't release all the spots at once. At a later date, approximately 10% more spaces will be available. This means that if you have a chemistry tutorial that is currently booked (40 students full), 4 more spots will become available.

Hi I was also wondering what "Breakout" means on the COMP10001 timetable (https://sws.unimelb.edu.au/2018/Reports/List.aspx). Thanks!

Hey! I'm trying to create a potential timetable. I'm aware that some subjects have class streams - is there a way to know which subjects have these and which times correspond to which streams?
Thanks!
2016: Mathematical Methods [43]
2017: English [50] | Specialist Maths [47] | Chemistry [42] | French [40] | UMEP Mathematics [4.0]
ATAR: 99.90

Hi!

So I’m currently trying to make a ‘mock’ timetable using the Uni handbook, and I realised that in some instances, you can’t really follow the Lecture -> Tute -> Prac structure; for instance, my Tute for Biomolecules and Cells is on Wednesday and my Prac for it is on Thursday, yet the final lecture is on the Friday. Therefore, my question is - will this cause complications, or does it not matter too much? (Because in figuring out the rest of my subjects, I have the option to disobey the lecture/tute/prac structure to make my timetable better - less breaks and a free day - but I’m not sure if this will cause headaches...)

Thanks in advance  ;D

Usually it's fine not to follow that structure because in the first week tutorial and prac classes don't run for most subjects so by the time you get to your first tute/prac you'll already know the required content. Hope this helps! (And someone please correct me if I'm wrong)

It is not always clear until class registration which subjects have streams. I know that maths subjects like calculus have streams. If you list your subjects people here may be able to give an indication as to whether or not they are streamed. If a subject is run in streams, it will follow a pattern that L01/01, L02/01 and L03/01 will all be the same stream.

In regards to tutorials and practicals, what MB_ has said is correct. Some subjects do run practicals and tutorials in the first week. If a tutorial is run in week one it is usually more of an information session, where you are told what to expect for the semester for the subject (what will happen in tutorials, assessment information, general introduction to university academia). Tutorials will also look at the content taught in lectures from the previous week, which ensures that everyone should be on the same page.

I believe that I had a biology practical in my first week, which was a really simple experiment on microscopes to become familiar with how practicals will run and how they will be assessed. Practicals also don't always align with the lecture content, sometimes there will be practicals that are standalone and are not related to lecture content, or they will be run at a time way after you have learnt about the theory. They try to make sure it is fair to everyone.

So does that mean you have to do L01/01, L02/01, L03/01 and can't do L01/03, L02/01, L03/03 for example? Or?

If the subject is streamed you will. When it comes to selecting your timetable, you will have to select a stream. Unstreamed subjects (chemistry, biology) allow you to select each lecture individually.
