Hey guys,

Sorry for the slightly late update but I've got some exciting news to share with you guys: I received my first distinction at uni! I am beyond happy with my result and I'm really glad that my hard work paid off. The assignment that I received the distinction for was for my EUB103 class (Culture Studies: Indigenous Education) which was mainly just critical reflections. After reading the feedback, I have come to realise that I mainly just need to work on polishing up the APA referencing (which does get marked at uni!) and to be more specific which I'll definitely work on for my future assignments!

As I'm having a lil trouble incorporating multimedia elements into uni journey journal, I created a Tumblr account (@productividee) which I might use as my uni journey journal as well. Don't get me wrong, I love ATAR Notes with all of my heart but the functionality of the forum space isn't really the right fit of what I had in mind for my uni journal. And of course, I'll still be present on the forums trying my best to answer general maths questions even though my brain is a lil bit foggy.

That's it for now! See you guys next time :)

Not exactly uni related but to reward myself for being the best student I can be during this semester, I’m going to see Tom & Jerry at the cinemas tomorrow!

Hey guys,

Long time, no see! A lot has happened since my last update so I'll try to summarise everything that has happened in the past few weeks all into one post for you. I just submitted my last assignment for Semester 1 today as I eagerly await my final grades (and my GPA) which will be released sometime in July (July 9th I think) and in about two weeks time, I'll be registering for my Semester 2 classes which I'm super excited about. My Semester 2 classes are:

EUB105 - Introduction to Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment (Primary)
EUB110 - Primary English Curriculum Studies 1
EUB111 - Primary Mathematics Curriculum Studies 1
EUB112 - Child & Adolescent Learning and Development

Next semester, it seems like I'll have the following assessment:

EUB105 - Reflective Journal (40%) and Professional Plans (60%)
EUB110 - Professional Plans (50%) and Written Examination (50%)
EUB111 - Weekly Online Quizzes and Recorded Creative Work.
EUB112 - Online Quiz and Essay.

The classes I'm most excited about are EUB110 (Primary English Curriculum Studies 1) and EUB112 (Child & Adolescent Learning Development) as I'm really passionate about and interested in English and Educational Psychology. I'm not really sure how I feel about EUB105 (Introduction to Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment (Primary)) or EUB111 (Primary Mathematics Curriculum Studies 1) though, especially as I'm not really confident teaching mathematics but that might change throughout the semester.

I haven't received any other grades from this semester yet so I'll keep you guys updated if I do receive another one soon. I also had a job interview yesterday which I thought went great and guess what?? It did! I just received confirmation this morning that I got the job and that I'm apart of the Optimise Learning team which I'm honestly so happy about. After receiving a handful of rejections, I do have to admit that I wasn't get this job either but I'm so glad that I did. However, due to confidentiality and their supply agreement, I won't be able to go into excessive detail about any of my future students.

Also, I'm kinda worried that I'll have too much on my plate next semester. I currently have three jobs and study full-time so I'm not really sure what to do. My three jobs are as a waitress at a restaurant, tutoring at Optimise Learning and tutoring once a week for a local retired teacher. Does anyone have any advice on what I should do? I'm kinda stuck.

Here's what I'm hoping my weekly schedule will look like next semester (but it ultimately depends on the class allocations I get during class registration):

Should I quit my job as a waitress or should I cut back my hours? If so, which job should I cut back hours on? If anyone has any advice, I would really appreciate it :)

Hi there,
Glad to see a positive update and hope you get the grades you desire.
Oh my, if I added up the hours correctly, you are planning to work 30 hours per week (that's almost full-time work!)
Not sure what your University recommends, but UoM tells us our degree should be treated like a full-time job and we should expect to spend 40 hours per week on uni (although for many of us, this time is more).
In my opinion (which ofc you are welcome to disagree) I think 30 hours might be too much, not sure what your financial situation may be, but I am currently working 20 hours per week as a tutor, and even I find that too much (I actually underloaded this semester, and did a subject)
Since I can't underload next semester (last semester b4 graduation  :P) I decided to reduce my hours (currently tutoring five days, planning to drop to 4). It is important to look after your mental and physical health and as well as keeping up with your uni load I think you may struggle with your current working hours (this is just me speaking from experience).
I would assume compared to tutoring, working as a waitress would be more physically demanding (I used to also work at a restaurant before tutoring full time) so I would try to see if you could potentially reduce your hour as a waitress (or possibly quit altogether) but maybe just ask to reduce your hours (to prevent having any double work days, i.e. don't work at the restaurant and tutor on the same days). This might be a good idea and may ensure you have a more manageable load (at least in my opinion).
Another possible option could be underloading if you need to work the number of hours that you work for financial reasons, however, if you can afford to reduce your hours I would recommend doing so.
Something else to consider, your current working schedule may reduce your opportunity to attend social activities in uni, as a first-year, it also important you that explore what uni has to offer socially, and ofc you could always attend an event after work.
But considering all most of your tutorials are on Wednesday, I guess you don't really have a reason to go to uni on other days of the week, but if you ever want to go out for dinner with uni mates, it hard to do so if you have to tutor every night (at least this happened to me and I had to cancel a lot of plans because I basically tutored every day, which makes socialising hard).
Just something to consider, first year is very important for both the uni content but also your interpersonal and intrapersonal development, so it is up to you, I know some people who did work similar hours and didn't burn out, but they had to sacrifice other opportunities (social events/ gatherings, university career events etc)
In the end of the day, it is totally up to you and your situation but I think 30 hours might be a bit much, but if you think you can handle then go for it, in the end every degree is different and I can only speak from my experience in biomedicine.

I hope this was helpful, please take this as a grain of salt, but I hope my insights can help shape your final decision.
Looking forward to future updates,
T&S

P.S I have been following your journal but never realised you got a tutoring job, not sure if you ever mentioned it but congratulations! I know how hard you worked to get a tutoring job, and you did it! Wishing you all the best :)

Hey tiredandstressed,

Thank you so much for your suggestions! I really do appreciate it. I actually just realised that I actually put in the wrong hours for the tutoring (the one in light orange) as I’m a bit of a boomer when it comes to technology whoops. The “tutoring” in the light orange is supposed to be 3:30-6:30pm. I’m planning to do the “tutoring” (light orange job) three times a week and the other tutoring job one time a week (a two hour job) which should add up to 11 hours in total (if I did the maths right).

I’m planning to work at least fifteen to twenty hours a week so I’ll probably do one or two 3-hour shifts at the restaurant to get the rest of those hours. Hopefully that makes sense but I definitely do understand where you’re coming from. Last semester I got extremely burnt out from trying to juggle my full-time uni studies and part-time work so I’ll definitely keep your advice in mind. I think I’m going to experiment for the first week or two to see what works for me and then I’ll reduce/cut back my hours if necessary.

Also, as I would only need to work <9 hours a week for my restaurant job, I’m planning to take the Saturday shifts out of my schedule as well which will open up time for socialising/me time as both tutoring jobs have fixed schedules (especially as one in the after-school care “OSHC” program).

I’ll also brainstorm the pros and cons of each scenario/option you came up with as well so thank you so much for your suggestions! I really do appreciate it <3

So good to hear that you're excited for next semester!  ;D Wow, that's a lot of hours to work tho! I guess whether or not you cut back on hours depends on how demanding the uni workload is and also how much recovery time you'll need (you definitely don't want to work yourself to the ground).
