Why did you decide to do a degree in actuarial science? Why do you want to become an actuary? :)

(I'm thinking of doing the same!!)

I don't fully know myself. But I do know that I always wanted to pursue something maths based given it's pretty much in my life. I enrolled for the degree without being sure at all what was there to risk analysis and it was pretty much a blur until I actually got in.

It got recommended to me back in Year 10 by my teacher. I just chose to keep through with her words all the way to Year 12 (especially since I basically set my mind towards it). Where else would I be anyway :P

And of course, it is certainly rewarding if you succeed walking down the path.

I do recommend it to anyone who has the mathematics capability. Can't deny that the concepts taught are very interesting

Whilst I do want to become an actuary, it's not necessarily the only thing on my mind. If all goes well I'll stick to it, but otherwise there are tons of jobs I can get out of my maths degree.

Will someone from NSW ever produce maths as good as this on AN? Re: Is it true that Monash is the hardest uni in Vic to graduate from?
THIS POST IS GENIUS OMGGGGGGGGGGGG WTF

probably has the most respect I've ever seen on any post. Lmao this post is amazing.

It was too satisfying seeing the respect tick over to +100.

Jamon's spot on with that one. But it did have to do with an observation of how frequently he posted at the time. Given he was active and obvious (put his photo up lol) I was like hmm sure I'll help here :)

What would happen if the entropy of the universe were to suddenly decrease? Would it result in the production of tremendous amounts of negative energy that would collapse spacetime into micro black holes or come together to form a white hole that will immediately collapse into pure gravitational waves that would tear all organised matter in the universe? If so what would be the meaning of existence? A mere cataclysmic symphony of disorganised chaos or the death of the universe as we know it?

Well that would violate the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics ;) hmm, the white hole seems a little counter-intuitive no, an increase in entropy only to completely rid the universe of any order? Doesn't that defeat the purpose?

Existence in itself is meaningless - This website, after all, is a collection of 1's and 0's hosted on a server in a room full of hundreds, in a tiny city on a tiny planet in a tiny solar system in a tiny galaxy that is a spec of dust on the millions upon millions of clusters of galaxies orders of magnitude bigger than ours. So, it is up to us to give meaning to it  8)

Where's Brenden when you need him, this shit got philosophical real quick... ;)

Haha the whole point was to break the second law of thermodynamics. My theory was that the universe will try to bounce back, overcorrect and end up selfdestructing itself. Thus the negative energy generation to stich back the disfigured spacetime. A burst of energy being generated is analogous to what a white hole would do.

The second answer was pretty spot on tbh :D

Roughly speaking, entropy is a measure of how 'chaotic' an isolated system is. The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics is (again roughly speaking), that systems are far more likely to tend to chaos than order (EG - gas molecules in a container that start in one corner end up dispersed throughout the container: Order to chaos) ;D

I did Thermodynamics in first year Physics, it was actually extremely interesting! ;D
