UMAT Preparation Courses:

Hi guys,

I’m really skeptical about spending so much money on UMAT prep courses. Right now there’s 3 courses I’m seriously considering;
- icanmed
- medentry
- hellouni

I have heard plenty about medentry and I probably would go for it but it’s so expensive! I’ve heard good things about icanmed as well but they are less experienced when compared to med entry and hellouni is an amazing price and sounds good based off the website but I don’t think they have as much experience and haven’t heard anything about it from other people. Which is the best one?

Hi,
In preparation for the UMAT, I did medentry for three months. It had heaps of drills and practice questions, but also practice exams. The guides were somewhat useful, and whilst I didn't read all of them, I definitely did learn from a few of them. I had a few friends who did iCanMed, and heard good things about the way they taught students how to tackle questions. But, they don't have practice exams, which are so important, because it can be a real struggle to finish the exam in 3 hours. One of my friends used iCanMed, but ended up also buying medentry because he wanted practice exams. I've never heard of hellouni, so I can't comment on that.

I would recommend medentry because it is the most trusted and experienced program. It is expensive, but if you are really set on medicine and can afford it, you should really consider it. You want to give the UMAT your best shot.

Hey, I used the NIE books primarily for practice (as well as a one day session thing) and found these incredibly useful as they had full 3 hour exams for time trial as well as practice questions for each section. If you're interested, I'm happy to send my NIE books (2013 and 2015) to you cheap as I am already in med school.

In my honest opinion dont bother with prep courses. They're wayyyy too expensive and can only help so much. UMAT is mainly a test of natural aptitude and there arent any 'optimal' strategy to doing them.
By all means familiarise your self with the test structure by doing some practice papers, scab them off your friends or something. I know kids who ended up paying thousands for MedEntry and got in the 50-60s. It is in fact bad if you over-prepare, as I found some practice questions to be completely different to the real ones.
For practice I did a couple of practice papers, including the free one you get from ACER. With some familiarity for the question structure and timing, you should be totally fine.

Hey Han123,
Just wondering whether the NIE books are still available?

Is anyone (from NSW) interested in trying out the Masterclass course from MEDSTART for their UMAT preparation? It's $595 for one year if we apply as a pair/group as opposed to $895 if you apply individually!

If you look at the link below, you'll realise that Medstart offers the same type of online resources as Medentry, plus an additional 5 practice exams, video solutions and (my favourite) 16 hours of personalised learning in classes of around 8.

Check out the group savings prices and their website. If you're interested, please message me so we can join together :)
