Understanding Capacitors?

Okay my school is doing further electronics for our detailed study and I hate it! In particular capacitors. I have little understanding of how capacitors work in a circuit. The direction of current and electron flow, do other componenet recieve current whilst charging, just a lot of things. I just dont understand it. Does anyone have any sites or ebooks or something they can refers me to so I can understnand it better. I understand the role of the capacitors and how they smooth circuits and all but I just dont get how it works in terms of direction of current and electron flow and whether current gets splits up if its in parallel just stuff like that.
