Hello everyone,
I've been choosing my subjects and I was wondering what subjects do I need to take in order to major in biotechnology? I've been following this sample course plan on the site (http://bsc.unimelb.edu.au/biotechnology) and chose the exact same subjects (Except for breadths) but just wanted reassurance that I'm doing right.

For biotech, the only compulsory first year classes are the two core biology subjects. Some chemistry is also advised. Otherwise you can choose whatever you like! Physics and maths might help with biotechnology a bit, or maybe a data analysis/experimental design class?

Thanks, so if I chose BIOL10004 (Biology of Cells and Organisms) and BIOL10005 (Genetics & The Evolution of Life), these two would be my two core biology subjects? And yeah I tried following the sample guide and chose Data Analysis, but it wouldn't let me enrol because it says I haven't reached the prerequisites for a 25 in methods, when getting 25 is a prereq for getting into the course..
Also, if we don't need to choose our second and third year subjects right now, do we just leave it blank?

Yes and yes :) that prereq error should he fixed soon, but there's no rush to enrol in subjects; instead, have a look at all the available ones in the handbook and just see what you like for now!

It's usually best not to just copy the sample course plan. Its there to give you an example of what you *could* do. Use the handbook instead. You can find information about specialisations and what subjects you need for them here https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2014/%21R01-AA-MAJ%2B1004
are you actually interested in stats/the environment, or do you think that the content you learn in those subjects might be useful? because if you don't, you don't need to take those subjects.
and no, you don't need to choose your second year/third year subjects yet. but it's probably a good idea to know what subjects you may want to consider taking in the future so that you can be sure that you've fulfilled the prerequisites for them in your first year. It would be a shame for example, to not do chemistry because you can complete the biotech major without it, but then later realise that that restricts a lot of the elective subjects under the major that you can take.

Definitely do Chemistry though. Biotech without chem is like fairy bread without the sprinkles.
