Arts-->Arts/Law at Clayton

I'm doing my preferences right now..I'm wondering, how hard is it to go from doing an Arts degree in 1st year to doing Arts/Law in 2nd year at Clayton? Is it really competitive, or do you just have to maintain your 1st year results average at a certain level and you're basically guaranteed a place in Arts/Law after that?

There's never a guarantee of transfer, as I understand it.

Copied straight from MyMonash ask.monash thingy:

Question

What issues are given consideration when assessing a course transfer application?

Answer

The specific selection criteria for course transfer will vary across faculties and teaching department.  For detailed advice about specific selection criteria (including grade averages required)  for a course that you are interested in, please contact the relevant faculty.

Some general issues that are taken into consideration when assessing course transfer applications are:

Undergraduate programs

    * Completion of at least two semesters of full-time study
    * Progress in course to date i.e. no. units passed or failed
    * Reasons for the transfer
    * Is the transfer in the best interests of the student

Postgraduate

    * Progress in course to date i.e. no. units passed or failed
    * Reasons for the transfer
    * Is the transfer in the best interests of the student

Double degree to single degree

Whilst transferring from a double degree to a single component of that double degree is usually straight forward, each application is assessed against the selection criteria of the single degree.

If you wish to transfer to a single degree that is not related to your original degree, you will be subject to the same selection criteria as other students applying for course transfer.  In some instances this application process may be through VTAC.  For specific course advice about the degree program in which you are interested, please contact the faculty offering the degree.

Info from http://www.law.monash.edu.au/undergraduate/entry-monash.html:

Current Monash students: Pathways into Law
Transfer into Law from another Monash degree

Internal transfers offer another pathway into law for Monash students. If you are studying for another degree at Monash and performing well, you may be able to transfer into the first year of law. Many students enter a double degree with Law (eg Science/Law), which may still be completed in the minimum time.

This is an achievable option for students who don’t meet the entry requirements first time round.
Entry requirements

To be eligible for an internal transfer into law, students must have:

    * Completed one or more years of a Monash degree (ie. a minimum of 48 credit points) and
    * Achieved a distinction average or better (70%+) across all Monash units for a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP), or
    * Achieved a credit average or better (60%+) across all Monash units for a domestic or international full-fee place

Important Note: The above averages are the minimum entry criteria to be eligible to apply.  Entry to law courses via internal transfer is a very competitive process and the actual average required depends on the number and standard of applications received each year.

I had a friend transfer from Arts to Arts/Law after his first year. He was getting a reasonably high (75+) average though...

Thanks for the help =] I really don't want to have to move interstate even for a year, but my mum is extremely worried that if I stay and do just an Arts degree 1st year, I may not end up in Arts/Law as I want to. I give myself a fair chance of maintaining that kind of average though...one more question I have - is it true (as my careers counsellor said) that if you're doing Arts/Commerce 1st year, it's tougher to transfer into Arts/Law (or Commerce/Law) 2nd year than if you were just doing Arts (or Commerce) 1st year?

I'm guessing it would be really competitive, and you would probably need 80+ average

Does anyone know the average needed to be considered into transfer for Commerce from a BBus at Monash Caulfield (presuming that the maths pre-req has been completed)

Inter = outside faculty
Intra = within faculty.

BBus and BCom are both BusEco faculty, so u'd be looking @ intra-faculty transfer.
That is, 2 get in2 BCom, u'll need a 70% I think (if I'm reading it right).

Kk. But then I dont get how it can say
Bachelor of Business family                          INTRA       INTER
Single degree transfer from B.Commerce family      65%       65%
Double degree transfer from B.Commerce family    70%     70%
Single degree transfer from B.Business and Commerce       70%
Double degree transfer from B.Business and Commerce       75%

Because how can you do INTER with any of those considering it says its (for example ) exclusivelyfrom the B. Com family , entry into business family?
I think im just shit at interpreting it.

Anyway I wnated this for myself but my brother also wants to know because hes doing Science @ Monash Clayton but is a shit cunt and wants to transfer to the Bachelor of Business so what average wouild he need? Or could he just apply through VTAC again with his ENTER from 2007 and get in (his ENTER was higher than 2007 requirement so chances are it would be enough for this year too)

wow back up...you need a HIGHER average if your transfering from com/arts into com/law or arts/law then if you transfered from straight arts or commerce? if so, how come?
