how do people who live far away from the uni usually travel? i live on the other side of town from monash and i was wondering the best way to get there tomorrow for open day (and for when uni starts i guess)

Monash has some free bus services that might be suitable for you. Otherwise, you can catch any train to Huntingdale station (on the Pakenham/Cranbourne lines) and catch the 601 on North road (if it runs, pretty sure it will on open day, but not too sure) or the 900 smart bus to Rowville.

Definitely recommend any prospective students talk to DisaFear (Science) and aes_999 (Commerce) if you're at Clayton tomorrow. Two great people who are very knowledgeable - chances are you might end up talking to them without realising it.

I will also be at the open day, taking the scenic route to the fitness centre as I pretend to be in year 12 & pick up whatever free USBs are on offer with my friend who actually is in year 12. You will have no way of recognising me, nor I you, but I just thought you'd like to know all the same.

Anyone live in the western suburb (around Point Cook and such), how long does it take to get to Monash and if so, are you used to the travel time?

Takes about 1-1.5hrs in the peak time. I didn't get used to it so I moved out.

Almost EVERYWHERE is open parking-wise, you should be fine. All permit zones are inactive during open day - I suggest parking either near Robert Blackwood Hall or the old oval which will be opened up for parking tomorrow. (not quite sure where this oval is, I just know that it's open... :P)

You can also refer here for a more detailed explanation of parking places.

The best kept freebie secret at Open Day (Clayton Campus) is free BBQ, courtesy of the awesome people at Education faculty. They usually open from 10 o'clock. Get them quick, cause they run out of food really fast.

Open day's a fantastic idea, it'll get prospective students ready for the never-ending and fairly disruptive stream of construction that'll inevitably be around the entirety of their degree. I mean, it's been a week and I still haven't found a convenient way of getting to HAL from Medicine -_-

Year 12s, this shouldn't need saying but take everything that Faculty reps are handing out. If you're planning on doing a degree like Science with multitudes of options, any pamphlets about majors/minors etc. are going to be really useful in helping decide what path(s) you go down. A year ago I would have noped my way out of here if anyone suggested doing a developmental biology major, but late last year I found a brochure detailing the major and realised it aligned exactly with my interests.

tl;dr Bring a big bag for all your shit!

Love talking to the parents of students, where the parent(s) asks all the questions and the student just stands there.

- Talked to a 14-year old who was dead-set on doing Accounting at university. His mum was like "I'm not forcing him to, he loves it".
- Got asked if dentistry/medicine was offered at Caulfield.

What a day. I was at uni helping out from 9:30 to 4:00pm. So many parents came and asked questions. There was a year 9 student came to the med faculty and said he is studying for UMAT now and he thinks with 4 years of study, he would certainly get 100%tile and get into Med for sure.  And he asked me how much he would earn if he becomes a neurosurgeon :S

Wow, lol. That's a little extreme. I wonder how he'd react if by chance the UMAT ceased to exist in the future.

Or if he got back his UMAT result and it was something like 40%tile?

My favourite question that comes up every year when I'm in the Engineering faculty is 'do I have to do much maths?'
vce: english, methods, spesh, chemistry, physics, geography.
