Just finished the test on Saturday. And I suck at the writing stuffDid coaching at QS helped ?
Did coaching at QS helped ?You mean the QS school... how do you know?
for the science reasoning its 30 questions in 30 minutes btw :)Ah yes, sorry about that :)
Hi I’m new to Atar notes and I’m trying out for jmss next year(lol I screwed up the shs test two weeks ago); and I’m just wondering about jmss. So hopefully somebody can answer these :)
1. Can you still do well in vce humanity subjects if u go to jmss?
-I’m really passionate about science and math but I still wish to do one or two commence subject in vce (since I want to do that in uni); so if I get into jmss, is there still a chance for me to get a 42+ in subject like economics? (I mean I’m totally fine without doing that though)
2. Can tuition help you with the entrance test?
-Lol I didn’t go to tuition for shs test and I screwed up on the actually exam-I studied hard for 3 months especially I studied 6 hours a day for the last month. But anyways, did the tuition help if you have the basic knowledge and needs a lot of practice questions? Btw, which tuition did u guys suggests the most for the jmss test(e.g. James an, Hendersons, QS...)
Sorry for my terrible grammar and the things I say probably wouldn’t make a lot of sense:(
But thanks for reading :) and please don’t sink this forum
I just did the exam last week so I dont really know about your first question.
For your second question I did do private tuition and I felt it really helped me.
Just before the exam I recommend you do a hendersons mock exam because they give a good idea of what the exam is like for the Jmss exam. Dont do it for the shs exam because it is complete shite when it comes to selective school.
for your 1st question idrk BUT for the second one,
I went to JAC this year to prepare for the jmss exam for year 10 2020, uhhhhh, I think in JAC, science rly helps you excel in your knowledge, ( we did a different topics every week, some on it was in the actl test ), For maths, JAC maths r lowkey too complicated for a year 9 standard in my opinion, BUT do not worry, THE TEST IS WAYYYYYY WAYYYYY WAYYYY easier than JAC tests ( if u get 80%+ in JAC youll flyyyy through the test ). Overall, I do recommend going to tutoring (since it rly helped me) but either way, you can get in without it.
Thanks for your reply and it’s good to know that Hendersons’ mock exam are helpful for jmss (Yea completely agree with what u said coz they made the shs math ones too simple); and btw, are the math questions in jmss test easier than the ones in selectives?Wayyyyyyy easier. I was able to finish both math papers with a significant amount of time left.
Does anyone have any sample tests similar to scientific reasoning? Also, the JMSS test is either on the first or second of August. I am stressedYeah, it's somewhere in August which is good and bad at the same time. I kinda wanted to get it over and done with but on the other hand, we have 2 more months to study for it. I think the best practice tests to complete for science reasoning would be ICAS papers which a lot of people have said are really similar to the actual test. You can do a few of the sample questions or buy past papers at https://www.unswglobal.unsw.edu.au/hub/educational-assessments/reach-and-icas-assessments-science-sample-questions/. I would recommend the G papers which are at year 9 level although it goes up to year 10 science as well. :) :)
Hi Guys, I am trying for JMSS next year(2021). Is there any material or any other posts which post material to study?I would suggest the post/thread: PRACTICE MATERIAL FOR JMSS or A YEAR 9'S GUIDE TO THE JOHN MONASH SCIENCE SCHOOL TEST. However, in the second post, the guide was deleted because people were viewing it too much but you can still see other people’s comments/posts which are still quite useful.

Hey, do u know when we get our marks back?
Does it say on the pdf on the school website? I got my interview email in late July and my offer on Sep 9th, but this was last year when COVID didn't mess up datesWait did you get year 11 offer last year?
Wait did you get year 11 offer last year?
do any of u know what's happening with the year 10 entry?? the exam was postponed to the 1st and 2nd of August, but im not sure if that will still go on, as there has been a rise in covid 19 cases.Maybe online this year. Just like year 11s.
thank you maths4life
just a question to anyone who did the jmss exam online this year, how was it run
did they put someone to monitor what you were doing, and see if you were cheating or not because im sure everyone would have took advantage of the fact that it was online. also did u have to do an essay, because for the suzanne corey exam u wont have to. pls let me know as my exam is in 10 days!!!!!
How did people do the online test? On an app or website? How did they time you?IDK LMAO
How did people do the online test? On an app or website? How did they time you?
yes thank you so much
you have been a great help
have you had your interview yet?
I dont have any confidence. How will I impress the interviewer? pls help
Honestly same hahaha, I think just practice answering some of the questions they might ask and it will help you to be more confident when they ask.
how was the test? was it hard?
do they give u a copy of the questions they will ask?
What essay topics did you guys do for the online test?
do they give u a copy of the questions they will ask?
Hellooooo. I am seriously freaking out cuz i heard that the yr 11 entance exam did not require exam takers to write informative or procedural essays this year as the exams were done online, and these are my best areas!! Could anyone who did the year 11 exam please once again confirm if this was the case and also whether this would be most likely the same for the year 9's doing the exam for year 10 entrance. And i also heard in place of the essays there was another science paper in addition to science reasoning.
yes im pretty sure that there was no essay based on the previous posts on this forum.
however i did not know that there was another test in place of the essay. if there actually was another test could someone tell me the names of each test on the exam
thanks
Hello people who are trying for JMSS,
I am a current student at JMSS and thought I could give the small advice for you guys not to stress about the exam as it is would be the least important part of the selection process (the interview is the hardest). Due to COVID-19 restriction, the integrity of this test is valued very lowly compared to the interview process which is because writing exams online is much more difficult compared to what would happen on pen and paper. So a piece of advice on writing the exam this year is to practice doing the test online if possible on softwares like IXL and online multiple-choice questions. Writing tasks might also pop-up in the form of timed practice tests as this is what has previously happened at our school during English sacs. So basically be prepared for your usual 6-tests strategy and don't worry that you have a disadvantage compared to others because even they also do :P.All the best for your exams!! 8) 8)
(oh and also be prepared to take the test in weird formats, I'm not sure what they might do but I've had a test on WEBEX and CANVAS and it was horribly planned. hopefully it becomes better for the official exam!!)
Feel free to private message me on this and I might get back to you based on how often I look on this!!
Did anyone 'bend the rules' during the test?
Hi, Guys, I am also a Year 9 who will be undertaking the test and have included a file about the online test.wait i thought there was not a writing task to be done
Well, some people have the test on August 1st while I have it on August 2nd.
Have you done the selective school (year 11 entry) for mhs, nhs, schs and mghs. If so, what do you think will be on it?
So, i took the Year 10 exam for entry into year 11 (yr 11 entry) for EBS (another science school) and they tested Year 10 stuff for Maths, (the highest level maths being basic logarithms like 5^3=125... express that in terms of log.) I took the exam of 25th of July (4 days ago)
Here's a link to a blog which lists all the stuff y'all need to know prior to the exam...
https://www.jaycetutoring.com/blogs/selective-school-tutoring-victoria/jmssec
having taken the year 11 entry exam, I can say FOR SURE that list contains everything you need to know from A-Z... DON'T skimp out on anything that's included in the list... every last thing is VERY important. (there were two questions in my exam on Probability: Tree Diagrams.. the list included that but I never touched on it so... *insert statement of morose/regret here
There won't be anything from Year 11 like factorial notation/binomial theorem/factorization on (x+y)^3 pattern stuff coz there wasn't any of that stuff for me and I took the exam for year 11 entry :)
Hope this helps.
Hi, yeah thats great but we are doing entry to year 10 for JMSS, would it be easier, would it still nclude logarithms or binomial theorem?
Hi, yeah thats great but we are doing entry to year 10 for JMSS, would it be easier, would it still nclude logarithms or binomial theorem?
No, it most likely won't include logarithms and definitely won't include Binomial Theorem.
what essay topic did the year 11 exam have
There was no writing component in the EBS examno for jmss
hey any one else have it on the second of august
my friend has it on the first
anyone know why they separate us like that even though its online
i think because of internet traffic on the website. Also anyone on Aug 1 could you tell us what are the type of questionsyeah anyone who did the exam on the 1st of august, could tell us the type of questions they gave
hey any one else have it on the second of august

anyone know why they separate us like that even though its online
this is what i got for my email for the test on 2nd
so we have an essay and a prac the link the person just gave is very helpful
Science Reasoning
b. Numerical Reasoning
c. Writing Component
d. Mathematics
e. Writing Component
can any one tell us what the prompt for the year 11 exam essay and prac report was
How does anyone know the prompt?? Have people already done the essay and repot?? Because I had it in my head that the year 11's only had the entry test and then an interview and that there wasn't a written part.oh then y do the year 10s have one
oh then y do the year 10s have one
What was the link?
can anyone who did the year 11 exam for jmss this year tell me how many questions were in the tests for maths, numerical reasoning and science reasoning respectively. could u also tell me the time given for each test as wellI'm didn't do the year 11 exam but i think it is like this
thank you
I'm didn't do the year 11 exam but i think it is like this
maths:60 questions 30 minutes
numerical: same as maths
science reasoning: 30 questions 30 minutes
essay: either 15 or 30 minutes i am not sure
Hi,
It is 50 for numerical, 60 for maths, and 30 for science reasoning.
Hi,thanks man
It is 50 for numerical, 60 for maths, and 30 for science reasoning.
hey asking anyone who knows the answer to this
on the jmss website it says that they will take 3% of any schools year level (im in year 9 so they will take 3% from the year 9 cohort)
im the only one doing it from my year level, so is that a good thing for me. does it give me a guaranteed pass?
good luck to anyone doing the exam tomorrow
yeh its 35 minutes for both writing components like it says in the message they sent u. Thanks for understanding that i dont want to reveal the topic, i mean even if i did it wouldnt really help but imma just say the prompt is ecology related for both writing tasks.thanks for replying, it helps a lot!
yo (haithere)so were majority of them hard calculations. if anyone had a calculator would they have flown through the test. were their topics on graphs, gradient linear equation etc.
The math was easy. Even if there were hard calculations u can round them off/estimate or just do them cuz they may look like they take long but through like simplifying/cancelling they dont really take long. if ur well rounded in most year 9/year 10 topics u should be fine.

im finished
anyone else?
I did my exam yesterday and I think I did really bad on the multiple choice tests but at the same time I found the written ones really easy (I finished them really early and knew a lot about the topics). Does anyone know how long it usually takes after the testing for interview invites to be sent out? I heard they are happening online this year.
science: 6. Kinda messed up with the dna questions. it was nothing like i expected. majority of it was problem solving. Some were even maths!
numerical: 9. it was too easy, but could have done the tire and soccer card questions, kinda messed up at the end
Maths: 10. i got everything right im sure of it
prac report: 8. finished in the nick of time, but explained everything in detail. it was a pretty decent topic as well. they gave too much information which helped a lot
Science comms: 8. i literally put the last full stop of the last sentence, a millisecond after. no joke. but that was a pretty hard topic. i struggled to type at the start, but they gave us some info, and what to write about. luckily i practiced some essays on plastic and stuff, but nothing about the enzyme tho
overall i think i am going to get an interview, but it depends on how everyone else went.
a question: im the only one from my school doing it so is that good for me
jeez now i feel like i did bad. I dont think u being the only one advantages u cuz its not the selective exam where they take top 5 percent of the year level. they only say they can't take more than 3 percent of a year level. but u sound like u did well so congrats.yeah thanks. they can take 9 students from my school, because there is around 300 in my year level. tbh it doesnt matter because what will happen will happen
yeah thanks. they can take 9 students from my school, because there is around 300 in my year level. tbh it doesnt matter because what will happen will happenwot school do u go to?
does anyone know when we get our results?
hey guys!gee. i thought i did well. what did everyone write for the essay and the prac report
everyone asking when u get results I called them and they said 3-8weeks so fingers crossed!
for me it was :
Science reasoning 7.5- i was freaking out at the start but it was okay I finished all of them but i think i did alright
Numerical 8- mostly patterns and were pretty easy to figure out i think i mucked up the last few but it went well
essay 8.5- i finished it and wrote a lot for the essay but i did find a bit of trouble on the topic
maths- 9.5 personally found it easy and completed many questions confidently
prac- 10- personally i practised a lot with the formats and answered all the questions and added my own stuff with detail so i think i did well
Good luck to everyone!
Hey has anyone received their confirmation letters from edutest yet cause I haven't.
Which conformation letter?
Do u mean the declaration of Autheticity?
Hey has anyone received their confirmation letters from edutest yet cause I haven't.
i called them they said they read them manually so it will take a while
I’ve received it!Wait what time did u recieve it
Wait what time did u recieve it
do we send it to info@edutest or registrar@edutest
Hey, guys, this is how I found the testnah i used the stuff that they gave. which i think was, what is this enzyme and how does it work, what we can do to stop plastic pollution how this enzyme could be a help. i just elaborated on the stuff they gave
Maths: really good 9 it was easier than the selective one by far and I finished with 3 minutes left.
Nr: I did well in this as well 9 and I guessed 3 questions one of the questions was the rebate one I had to guess this.
Science reasoning: I think I did good 8 I finished all the questions and the DNA ones were good as I studied the base pairings the night before.
Prac: I covered everything and finished everything on time. 8 but forgot a title which was disappointing.
Science comm: I think I stuffed up as my arguments were like global warming, diseases, and animals dying. Did anyone have this as their arguments? I think a 7
nah i used the stuff that they gave. which i think was, what is this enzyme and how does it work, what we can do to stop plastic pollution how this enzyme could be a help or enzyme. i just elaborated on the stuff they gave
u did good congrats.
i think the test knocks out a quarter of the people trying but the interview is the real killer. im sure if anyone thinks they did good they prob did and will most likely get an interview.
is anyone trying for Suzanne or Melbourne on the 8th of august
what did you answer?12 cm hahaha am i wrong?? ur scaring me
hahaha do u guys remeber the question that was like: approximately how long is this lineyeah lol. despite that being easy it took me the longest time. it was a sudden question out of nowwhere.
yeah lol. despite that being easy it took me the longest time. it was a sudden question out of nowwhere.i did 12cm also!
i put 12cm as well
anyone have tips on avoiding procrastinating, do any of u also struggle with this? :'(
Has anyone who did the test on Aug 2 received the confirmation yet? I sent mine around 40 minutes after the test and haven’t gotten anything back yet??i don't think so but i know they got my email because i called to check, you can do that
Sorry, I’m a bit lost on where to find it. Could you please give me the number?um it should be on the email they gave u with the login details and password
um i mostly focused on JMSS but i made sure to get good grades as they check your results i stayed in my school and out of school like sport, science clubs also i kind of balanced it allyeah. a moonth before the exam i did no school work, so now that the exam is finished, im gonna get back into school work
when do the year 10's have their interview.I checked the calendar on JMSS website and it said that the year 9 interviews were around the end of the month but still TBD
and when do year 9's get their results
when do the year 10's have their interview.get results in 3-8 weeks and they tell u interview date then
and when do year 9's get their results
what happens if they dont give an email back regarding the declaration of authenticity. does that mean that our test, and results are not valid? has anyone else got or not gotten an email regarding this?
i haven't got an email back yet but just call them to make sure ur sent, it takes them time to send stuff back as they have to read them manually and check all the namesyeah so i called them, they said they confirmed it, but i didnt get an email, i just went with the flow. lol.
yeah so i called them, they said they confirmed it, but i didnt get an email, i just went with the flow. lol.
anyone who actually saw the email, can u tell me if we had to do anything with the email, like send it back or something?
There wasn't anything on the email, just saying that they've got the formthanks

How do I distract myself I can't think of anyone but the examwdym like have u done the exam and like are stressing for your results?
wdym like have u done the exam and like are stressing for your results?
yea pretty much, I CANT SLEEPookok i see u
did you do the year 10 entry? When is your results coming out? (I didn't try out for jmss this year but i did last year)
ookok i see u
okay try some mediating ik it sounds dumb but it calms me down, tea also
just like embrace the fact that you cant change the results now what done is done and at the end it will be okay
ACCEPTANCE is the most important part while waiting or else we will stress ourselves out. Take a bath or do something you love and you couldn't do it because you were studying. For me, baking and self care. Talk to your parents about this. Just remember to like vibe and what done is done
How do I distract myself I can't think of anyone but the examtrust me. if u thought that u did bad, then u probs wont think about. it shows that u have worked hard for the exam. someone who didnt put effort does not care, so its nothing to worry about. i fantasize about getting into jmss most days, and what ill do if i get the acceptance letter. tbh what u think about does not matter anyway, since it wont make an impact on the results. what will happen will happen ;D ;D ;D
damn that helps with a lot of stuff. thanks.happy to help feel free to message me for anything!

But just remember it is okay to be nervous and stress but you have to le yourself relax also.
Thanks for the tips! I'll probably binge-watch the MCU or somethingyeah taking a break is probably the best way to not feel nervous. u have done ur exam and nothing u learn now will change the outcome. i studied really hard for jmss, so now im taking a break by watching youtube or anime.
Same here bro.how's ur application?
how's ur application?I didn't have much but I got a couple medals from basketball, a couple awards from school, a community service award, high distinctions/distinctions in a couple ICAS, some math olympiad stuff. My reports kinda weird you gotta be 18 months ahead for an A. so i got As on all my core subjects, and some Bs in my elective. I didn't have any state level stuff in sport tho, coz i got chronic knee pain, so that's gonna screw me over. :(. Anyways good luck on the exam.

i didnt get the greatest of results last year and I still managed to get an interview. I got 2 superiors (maths and numerical), 1 high average (science reasoning) and a low average and below average in the two science writings.
Your results are not brought up in the interview, in fact you don't even find out your results until a couple of months after.
Your school report on the other hand is discussed throughout the interview, so really make sure that you have something to show off.
if i do get an interview i dont have much to show, just have to really talk up the interviewers. i have my year 9 2020 report, i have some chess medals, and i have certificates i got from primary. i dont do sport, or learn an instrument. anyone know what else i could show. :'(

what did u guys end up writing for ur personal statementwhich school is this for. is it for jmss. if so where do we write this?
which school is this for. is it for jmss. if so where do we write this?
sorry this was meant for mhs, since everyone here was already talking about it. the mhs chat is so deadyep sorry my bad

A big effect. You would need like a lower score like 1 superior.Cool, I hope it ends up working for me
Is there an interview stage for the year 10 MHS entrance exam?
What is special consideration?im pretty sure it is when, if u dont pass u can ask them to reconsider their decision. most people including me will ask for it. if im wrong someone correct me.

Does anyone know how the interviews are gonna work this year? They are gonna happen online probably (that’s what they did for the year 11s) and I’m guessing that won’t change. They will either make it a joined call with groups kinda like it would usually be and discuss a topic/do activities or it will just be one-on-one interviews where you just have to show off achievements/reports and talk about your passion for science/math/technologies.
hi everyone. just want to know why u want to go to JMSS, do u really want to get in that badly? if so, for what reasons and is it worth the same hype as going to a selective school like MHS? Anyone pls reply :)
Anybody? Anyone at all? :P

I really want to go because I have gotten really obsessed with physics and quantum physics and my current school doesn’t cater for that at all. JMSS also offers a quantum physics elective subject which is AMAZING and I really want the opportunity to do that as I’m seriously considering it for a career. I could write a lot more but I’m supposed to be doing school work now ;D.appreciate it, could u explain more later? Also maybe reasons for jmss over mhs?
I could go on and on about it but like it would just interrupt my school work.whenever ur free
Science has always been of my favourite subjects in school, and an interest out of school. Science, being such a broad topic means that there is just so much to learn, and I think it's cool how any phenomena can be explained (even if it takes forever) through science. Questions like, why things drop? or why water doesn't fall of the Earth can all be explained through the concept of Gravity. It's the little concepts that can explain such complex ideas that makes science cool, at least in my opinion. This is also why I enjoy math it's about transforming complex patterns, into easy to-understand expressions. A relationship between the circumference and diameter of a circle, is described as pi. I've greatly enjoyed math and science in school, and this has largely stemmed from my general curiosity, no matter what the subject would be. I think it's great that JMSS, while being a 'science school' still offers so much more, science is a real important part of world, but there is also still so much other stuff in the world. Science and math are largely calculating, but people say I'm a more of a creative person. It's probably why I love drawing, photography, filmmaking, and literature so much. I think JMSS's community being revolved around learning, as well as having better facilities would greatly motivate me. I still have no idea of what I want to do in the future, but being placed into a position where I'm able to learn about new arising science subjects, without neglecting my interests for other subjects, will help me discover pathways I was never even aware of. Even if I don't get in to JMSS I'll still have an undying passion for science, it's just unfortunate that I'm going to miss out on such a life-changing experience.that's cool but what do u mean by: 'it's just unfortunate that you're going to miss out on such a life-changing experience.' I think you'll get, everyone seems to be genuinely interested on this forum and will at least make it past the testing stage. Im pretty sure we all did well.

I don't quite understand what you mean, sorryDo you think you will get in? cuz you wrote that u think u won't and it will be unfortunate. i said i think that most of us, if not, all, on the forum will at least make it to the interviews.

Even if I don't get in to JMSS I'll still have an undying passion for science, it's just unfortunate that I'm going to miss out on such a life-changing experience.
ahahaha this is a fuckign mad copypasta holy shit
i guess i got big trolled. fock i feel like everyone's cringing at my posts right now.
hey guys just wondering if any of your know when Suzanne results are coming out and how many people they usually accept? They usually except 10-20. I emailed them asking result dates but they said they are not sure on Wednesday
They usually except 10-20. I emailed them asking result dates but they said they are not sure on Wednesday
Does anyone know when the interview results for JMSS will come out, cause supposedly the first round of interviews is on the 27th?do u mean interview invitations?
Hollup, I did my interview like wayyyy back on August 8th, and they told me results would be back in 48 hours, or I must've misheard.
Hi, wait are you for year 11, because on the JMSS calendar it says it is coming up in 1/2 weeks?
Waiiiitttt what jmss calender?? does it have all the important dates?
Hi,what do u have to worry u prob got into MHS
We have 8 more days until the first batch of interviews. When will the email come for JMSS?
Hi,did u get an interview?
We have 8 more days until the first batch of interviews. When will the email come for JMSS?
No, just interview notices have been sent to people and the outcome of that interview will be sent in 2 weeks.
MHS someone asked about it.
check your spam/junk folder
Is this for MHs or JMSSjmss, anyone got interview invites?
No, not even out yet bro.so much suspense tho man
JMSS takes so long. MHS is so organised.it's prob just coz the yr 10 entry for mhs had only like 200 people try out nd jmss had like around 800. also there was no essay for mhs so it would have just been the computer marking and ranking students whereas jmss has two essays per person so it would take longer to mark
Will there still be group activities for year 9 interview?prob not cuz its online.
Well, there is a possibility that the interviews may not even be next week. The year elevens got 2 weeks to prepare for their interviews and I think this date is not the actual one. I think they have not finished marking the essays yet and even if we do get an email it will probably be for an interview in two weeks' time allowing us to prepare.well its gonna take a while getting through the interviews considering they're going to interview like 400 people
has anyone got interview invites for yr 9 going into yr 10 for jmssno have u?
No news. No interviews came today. I don't think the interviews are this week.yeah im just bored af
yeah im just bored afDude you should just chill out and try not to think about the interviews or anything. If you stop worrying about it the wait won’t feel as long. I’m sure if anyone hears anything new they will post it and let us all know.

I’m sure if anyone hears anything new they will post it and let us all know.thanks, but like i literally have no life atm. all i look forward to is playing fortnite (call me a 9 yr old cuz i am) and watching tv ffs haha
thanks, but like i literally have no life atm. all i look forward to is playing fortnite (call me a 9 yr old cuz i am) and watching tv ffs haha
It’s usually 400 - 450 people get interviewed and then 200 are accepted.oof, its gonna be hard
Yes, lots of news today. Firstly, the dates have changed for the jmss exam. To the 2nd week of september. Also, my friend called jmss today and they have told my friend that the interview was supposed to be this week but because of edutest not answering their messages and calls they had to change the interview date. So its edutests fault. Not Jmss.thanks that relieved a lot of nerves
Anyone got results?Nope, starting to get anxious
Nope, starting to get anxiousi mean hearing others still haven't got anything either is a relief. if we think we got at least 2 superiors and everything else was fine then we should be fine.
I got in this year for year 11 and it took us around a month to be given the interview invitations, it probably won’t take that long for you guys but it might so I wouldn’t stress too much and you will most likely get 2 weeks so prepare for the interview so I would say the interviews aren’t going to be next week. :)Hi Rosejoy, good job on getting into JMSS for next year. I also got in for year 11 next year, do you have instagram cause I'm looking for other people who also got in for next year, and discuss some stuff about the school hahahaha

I’m pretty sure AT LEAST a few of us on this forum will get through to the interviews, you all sound like you did pretty well on the tests. I don’t think there’s any reason to worry until it gets to a week before the interviews are supposed to happen because they have sent out the invites pretty late some years. Fingers crossed 🤞.
which date did the results come this yearThe 21st of August
BIG NEWS!!!oofty, my dad's at work, i'm so freaking out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How do u think u went on the test?? will 2 superiors be enough???? :-\ :-\ :-\

Don't worry too much, they probably arrange the interviews by your last name. Mine starts with C, if you're wondering.

for those that got an interview, did you guys have to write a letter or send something to them?No at least I didn't. I only did the exam, but now we do have to provide some information like our reports, extra-curriculars, awards, science out of school, and answer some questions; all that good stuff..

This doesn't have anything to do with the exam or interview, but if you were to get in would you have to reselect your VCE subjects (I've already chosen at my current school)are you talking about yr 11 entry cuz we yr 10s mostly

did anyone get an interview with the last name v or something around that?
same, do you know how long its gonna go for? since mine's happening during classThey are scheduled to run for an hour per session. Anyone know what to expect for the 1 on 1 interview - will they ask us about our resume and answers to those questions?
I got an interview today, and my last name starts with Z
Hey I’m new to atar notes, but anyways, I got my interview notice as well, and I don’t really know what to do, I get really nervous for interviews, does anyone know what percentage of people pass the interviews? Also what kind of questions there might be. Also I feel like if I choose a scientist role model it might be a bit... dull, like a lot of people are going to say scientists, so I kinda want to stand out, yknow? so it’ll be memorable for the interviewer. I also saw someone said the questions we were asked to answer were the ones they normally ask in person at the interview, if that’s the case then does that mean the interview is going to be completely unknown? like a complete mystery? It's quite depressing actually, but the truth is every man for themselves, because if I tell you it's going to reduce my and other people's chances of making it in. However, I can say you are not far off.
By the way does every person get the same questions or is it differentI’m pretty sure the questions we’re supposed to include in the CV are the same but your interviewer could like ask other questions or ask you to elaborate on your answers I guess?
Has anyone (current y9s) had their interview yet?
mines on friday!
mine's on Friday too. What time is yours?1:30
Has anyone (current y9s) had their interview yet?I think Friday is the first batch of interviews, so there shouldn‘t have been any yet, mines on Wednesday, last name starting with W btw

Are they doing group interviews this year with the 1 on 1 or is it just 1 on 1?I have no idea, but I'd assumed they'd still be happening in order for them to gauge how well we work with others, and how sociable we are.
i'm at 10:10
me too!tmr morning?
tmr morning?
So there is a group interview.we don't know, surely there will be multiple interviewers, so it is possible for people to be interviewed at the same time but just by different people
we don't know, surely there will be multiple interviewers, so it is possible for people to be interviewed at the same time but just by different peopleWould you guys prefer a group interview, or strictly 1 on 1?
if its not to much to ask, for people that have their interviews on friday to say if its just 1 on 1we dont know man
Hello, i got in for year 11 entry this year. In regards to your 'dress code' question. There really isn't one but i suggest wearing your uniform as it looks more professional. If you don't want to though just wear something neat and 'smart' looking i guess. (try blue its the universal colour of smartness hahah)Congrats ! Considering that you got in, you must've done well on the interview, any tips?
Congrats ! Considering that you got in, you must've done well on the interview, any tips?
Also, for the people who have done their interview. Did you do a group with a 1 on 1.pretty sure first interviews start tmr
Also how long did it take total time for the full session to complete?
Hahah thank you. honestly I thought I did horrendous but here are some tips I wish I had before my interview:
- Try to prepare yourself for general questions that they may ask you, for example ‘why do you want to go to jmss’ although don’t write a paragraph and memorize these answers just write dot points so you don’t get stuck when they ask you. Memorizing premade answers makes you look automated and not genuine. They are looking for students who genuinely have a passion for science and also have other interests beyond school not just people who are really smart.
- They also ask some pretty random questions so be careful of your answers to those. You don’t need to know everything about the topic of the question to answer it, just get what you know and run with it.
- Always talk good about your current school and make sure you have a list of reasons why you like your current school. < I sorta messed up this question cos I got caught off guard and couldn’t think of anything other than having supportive friends hahah. (talk about opportunities you have at your school and your teachers)
- If you notice that you are getting really nervous and start mumbling, catch yourself and think about what you say before you say it. If you don’t think about what you want to say before you answer the question your going to mumble and not make sense to the interviewer/s .
- Also the teachers that interview you are really nice, try to make the conversation seem less like an interview/interrogation and more like a casual conversation (you don’t need to sound like a dictionary just talk like you normally would to a teacher at you school)
- Ask questions at the end of the interview (I would recommend 3-5), write a list of questions you have and go over the school website to find things you can ask them about. Referring to their website shows that you really care and did your research.
- I recommend watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUQ6RpAgci0 (even though it not specifically for jmss i think it helps)
- SMILEEEE 😊 your good vibes will radiate onto the teachers hahah
Umm I think that’s it, if you have any other questions just ask, but Good Luck to all of you, you can do it!!
(damn this is really long hahah sorry)

heyyyyno one knows, first interviews are at 10.10, and year 10 & 11 may be different
first of all thankq so much for helping us all out , i am pretty sure the questions are different depending on the day.
So there is no group interview but only a single interview ?
I’m pretty sure I was one of the first. It is only a one on one interview but there’s nothing to stress over. I’m sure you will all do fine - I didn’t have much time to prepare but I still think I did pretty good.
I’ll be happy to answer any general questions but I won’t say exactly what they asked.
Ok about the interviews (I just finished mine), there is nothing to stress about and you can’t really prepare for the questions they give you but if you are really passionate about science it shouldn’t be a problem. There are some general questions and some random ones - I’m not going to tell you exactly what but along the lines of ‘If you had 1 million dollars what would you do?’. Those type of things. There are two people interviewing you - one takes notes and the other asks questions - altogether there are around 6 questions.Wdym you by you cant prepare for it? surely they ask you about your passion in science and why you want to come to jmss
There isn’t a group part and it only runs for 10 minutes (or shorter depending on how you answer the questions) I talked a lot.
Good luck! :)

I’m sure you will all do fine - I didn’t have much time to prepare but I still think I did pretty good.yo man, in terms of random questions, did anything get you stuttering? and did they mention the curriculum vitae?

Last name starts with A.did they talk about your responses to the 4 questions?
I’m pretty sure they only asked 1 general typical question and the rest were all random.
There was nothing too hard - the answers were easy to think of. They are just trying to get to know you as a person - you’ve already proven you’re smart. They briefly mentioned the CV but not much - be able to elaborate a bit on it.

thanks a lotgo for around 10 minuets
i wont ask u specific questions cause i know u wont answer, but how long did the interview go for, and were there any group activities or was it only 1 on 1.
also were there any science related questions
hope u did well on ur interview
go for around 10 minuetsthe whole thing?
This is the last thing I’m gonna post for now because... school exists. But I think half the questions were science related, but you don’t need to know stuff for them, and half were about you as a person - such as the extracurricular and awards.wait did they directly ask you what extracurricular activities you did in the past?
the whole thing?thats what people i asked said
Does anyone know when we get our results?
The lady I talked to said in the next couple of weeks. How did you go on your interview? I messed up so bad, I had so much interesting ideas to bring up and I didn't talk about any of them.how many questions did they ask you
>:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
how many questions did they ask you
even if u answer u wont lose anything so could u pls tell
I think it varies for people, but I got around 5. They are really really random questions, so prepare for them.thanks
thanks
u dont have to tell me what the questions were but were there any science questions
Sorta, maybe like half science, and the other half is just about you as a person.Wait how random were they, are they still like general questions like what would u do as a leader or something like that?
Wait how random were they, are they still like general questions like what would u do as a leader or something like that?
Yea along those lines, but I wouldn't practice answering that specifically, as I'm sure everyone get's different questions. My interviewer was looking at a screen and scrolling through every time I finished answering a question, so I'd assume she just had a massive list of questions.surely they asked you about your passion for science and what u would bring to jmss
surely they asked you about your passion for science and what u would bring to jmssNo they didn't lol. They asked about what I did out of school, and I talked my volunteering and basketball.
Ihavenolife:(, do you remember who interviewed you? And how well do you think you went compared to other people because I don’t think many people will do amazing on the interview because of how random it is. They can’t expect us to be able to answer perfectly.I don't actually remember her name, but I think she worked on the VCE team. I tried my best to come up with answers on the spot, and I went in depth as possible for every answer. But I had so many good answers that I didn't even talk about so ;(. I have no clue how other people went though

Hey, may i know what they asked?
Hey, may i know what they asked?pretty much they asked me like 7 questions and like 2 questions are non science related
pretty much they asked me like 7 questions and like 2 questions are non science relatedthanks!
The questions they ask differ from person to person I think. For a couple of mine, they just gave me a word, and I had to talk about. I didn't have any specific questions about the why I wanted to come, or what I could offer to the school, but I know others that have.
Thanks for replying, may I know what kind of ‘word’ you were given? Only if you don’t mind sharing :)
I think its really unfair how some people can have way more time to prepare than people who had the interview today
there are no interviews on the weekendsohhh
the dates for the interview are 4th , 7th ,8th,9th and 10th
how did those who did it today go?I did it yesterday and I think I performed really well, the interview was around 15min for me and I talked a lot as well
heyyy i know this is late but the vitae is due the day before your interview right ? If mine is on tuesday that means i need to give in my word doc on Monday yeah ? ( please correct me if i am wrong )Yes any day before your interview
I wrote about 1500 wordsI didn’t write nearly as much D: I’m seriously freaking out right now I have my interview tomorrow and I feel like I’m going to fail..... any last minute tips?
I didn’t write nearly as much D: I’m seriously freaking out right now I have my interview tomorrow and I feel like I’m going to fail..... any last minute tips?just chill, don't worry, relax, think about what u say before u say it, take ur time, take your time to think, smile, be cheerful. u got this, good luck! :D
luv how active this has become because of interviews!yeah lol
Same here I am tomorrow. I go to Beaconhills college. My friend goes to glen Waverley so and has his interview tomorrow. Good luck. My interview is at 9:50am
why did u try out for jmss if u already go to mhs lol
Hey hi I went to beaconhills in 2019 I now go to Melbourne high school I also got an interview call.
You go to beacon hills college Berwick. I go there. Wait what did you get and what house are you in?? Do you go to MHS now??how was ur interview?
when do we get our results for the exam?2 weeks, as well as our placement
Sorry for asking so many qs but how many of you here are girls? (Can you just reply to this) I just wanna know because I’ve heard that jmss has more male applicants.I'm a girl - I've heard that as well, yet the spread of gender seems pretty even at the school.
Sorry for asking so many qs but how many of you here are girls? (Can you just reply to this) I just wanna know because I’ve heard that jmss has more male applicants.Hi I am also a girl. But over the years they try to make the year level 50% to 50% for both genders. So that would make it slightly easier for us girls as there are more male applicants.
hey im a girl as well and I had my interview today :)
not to sound full of myself or cocky but the lady asking the qs kept saying that I did really good and should be very happy with myself
One tip id give is that dont stress or panic , they are so friendly
Try to befriend the ladies who interview you , first impressions go a long way
try your best to answer the questions even if you are not sure , you may not get all of your info right but if you sound confident and excited in what you are saying , it gives them the idea that you are passionate
good luck to anyone who does the interview in the next two days , wishing you all the best :))
I just did my interview earlier. I was shaking so much, like you can’t tell I was shaking, but I could tell myself, I was just shaking so bad. I think I did pretty well though, answered well I think...I was shaking too you’re not the only one :’) Congrats on finishing the interview and good luck!
I had a high distinction and a distinction in science ICAS, A 1st place in the Science Talent Search and a few school academic awards for certificates. I also put down the two instruments I learn and the 3 sports I play.looks like u r good to go, all i had was a distinction in amc from myr 7 ): and a certificate in like this computing program i did in like grade 4. and then i wrote i play cello and piano and do squad swimming and i put down club cricket cos i've done training, and i wrote attendance in youth camps. thats it ):
oh my god!!! reading what you guys have accomplished makes me feel like i wont get in.that's a lot haha
I put in my distinction award from the Australian Maths competiton and noted down that I had 3 of those and 2 credits , I also put in a dance medal and the Mark Dreyfus award , a science award for excellence throughout the whole year and an award for winning in a science writing competition.
I forgot to write i have 3 dance medals but oh well :/
I also wrote down how i did 3 different sports in Australia for 4 different teams and how I did 2 other sports out of the country.
i dont do any form of music though , I used to do choir when I was younger but I did not write that down because I was in primary :(looks like u do a lot of sport tho, and u have a lot of curricular awards
looks like u do a lot of sport tho, and u have a lot of curricular awardsi guess we r all nervous af
do not be nervous , you should actually be very proud of your achievements ! they are very good :)sure some of us r already chatting haha
also yall if anyone does make it into the school ( I pray we all do ) , would it seem like a good idea to make a groupchat on some social media platform with ppl from this forum ? So its like we would have friends there already ?
im just worried that I might not have enough
when was this?wdym
the lady I had kept hyping me up - she said I was doing amazing and that I should be happy with myself. Both ladies also seemed to be very happy that I was very nice and apparently "not a lot of people did that" . which is sad for them :/
the lady also kept saying " hopefully you get something from us in the next couple of weeks "
I had my interview recently and i felt extremely uncomfortable the lady didn't really introduce herself and went straight to the point so it kind of made me a bit more nervous. I did horrible tbh but ig theres always another chance next year.Sameee, my interviewer went straight to the point too. Mb we had the same lady?!? Lol I tried to be rlly nice but idk she didn’t really show that much emotion 😂 I mean I don’t blame her tho I’m not an interesting person and she was probably sick of doing so many interviews.
My school finishes this week. I think they will release the acceptance mails next week.

Hello everyone,
Will introduce myselself soon, I go one the Highschool in Glen Waverley,
hey y’all, i’m new to atarnotes.
i did my interview on wednesday and i was wondering how long were ur interviews? mine was like 17 mins and the two ladies i had were super nice, but one didn’t talk much as she was just taking notes. she asked some tricky q’s here and there though.
I have a pretty irrelevant question now, but how hard did everyone study for the exam? Did anyone do tutoring and if you did was it any help? I’m asking because I have a lot of friends who went to tutoring and studied for hours and still didn’t get past the test. Just want to know if it makes a difference.Well I did tutoring in the past, so my basics and everything would be better than most, I quit a while back. For the JMSS exam, I didn’t go for any special tutoring or anything, I kinda just flipped through my old textbooks and reviewed trigonometry cuz I’m bad at it and winged it. I didn’t decide to go to the exam until the last minute.

Just want to know if it makes a difference.I did a bit of tutoring but it was more focused on exam strategies and getting used to the way the exams are set out, definitely helped me (and even if I don't get in it's still important to be able to take exams well so I'm glad I did it). I didn't spend ages on it tho, I did like 6 weeks of it with a few weeks break (COVID rescheduling) between the end of it and the exam.
Also if y’all have insta can you like list below imma make a gc or smthn
ugh im freaking out. i feel like my interview was too short, MINE WAS UNDER 20 MINSI think everyone’s was
ugh im freaking out. i feel like my interview was too short, MINE WAS UNDER 20 MINSmine was about 20 minutes too, I don't think it'll matter too much how long it was, provided you made a good impression - just luck of the draw a bit as to what questions you got and how long you could talk about them for. :)
What's everyone going to do on the holidays?if i get in, study coz its a miracle i got an interview, if i dont watch minecraft youtubers all day
Either that or go swimming a lot if it’s warm.how u gonna go swimming during coronavirus lol
idk if anyone wants to know but they had 1000 applicants this year and interviewed 500 (a friend asked as their interview question)
idk if anyone wants to know but they had 1000 applicants this year and interviewed 500 (a friend asked as their interview question)Wow that means I have an even smaller chance than I thought.
i already signed my renrolment form, idk if other schools do thisIs that the form where you have to write whether you’ll be at your school next yr? I put yes for that form lol...
Did you guys have to ask when the results were coming, or did the interviewer just sayThey just told me
they have to send it out next week (starting at 14th). because people have to pay school fees for next year, they said it would take 2 weeks, and i did it last friday, so i would expect to find out shortly!!!! ahhhh
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1UtRnGn5hcThought this was gonna be a rickroll
Thought this was gonna be a rickrollive memorised the rick roll url to protect against this
Knowing its this week, they probably wont send it out on the weekend, so its going to be between now and friday 5pm most likely, so thats 6,031 minutesmeaning not long :D
i called the same week as the interviews ( the Monday) to ask when the interview invites will be sent
That same day at night they started sending out emails.
Just today I called agn to ask when the results are released and they said the same thing as when I asked about the interview

i think u should write ur letter man idk maybe it is risky but better than not taking action and u have valid reasons i guessOk ty
In my case the interviewer removed the headphone at the start of the interview and there was a bit of echoing in the beginning. After that she was interrupted by someone for more than 30 seconds. So, I don’t know whether I should write a letter.OMG SAME, i think the 2 ppl were both at school and when i was talking, they took off their headphones and handed documents to someone.

Well idk but anyways my mum just seriously doesn’t want me to go rn, just gave me a 10 min lecture about why I shouldn’t go ;-;oof break free bro, if it's what u want it's what u want, make it happen, leave no regrets
Well idk but anyways my mum just seriously doesn’t want me to go rn, just gave me a 10 min lecture about why I shouldn’t go ;-;Make a PowerPoint on why u want to go to jmss, study like crazy (to prove that you can do it!!!) or do anything to convince her. This is your future and if you’re up for the challenge I think you should go to jmss. Plus you passed the interview and test so that already shows you’re pretty capable.

]Omg I saw you in the 2018 JMSS thread (yes I read up to 2017s JMSS threads) I’m honestly not super smart... do you think I’ll be fine in VCE? I’m kind of scared that I’ll be really behind. I seriously can’t believe I’m actually going to JMSS I’ve been reading these forums since like yr 7 or smth I don’t even remember!?? It’s crazy I always thought of you guys who got in as sOoo amazing (I still do)
Hey guys ! I'm in year 12 at jmss currently :) Whilst it might seem like we're all nerds from the outside, we're actually a very diverse bunch of kids. Theres heaps of students with differing interests like sport, music, writing all against a backdrop of science! We have lots of lunchtime clubs that are catered for people with diverse interests :)
Don't worry ! I was a big procrastinator in year 9 hahaha but I think you've just gotta remember that you're still in year 9! year 10 at jmss isn't that difficult, you don't need to ace every subject, just enjoy the year and content you learn because it's last year you get before the big black hole that is vce sucks you up hahaahah goodluck everyone and congrats to everyone who got in :)
I was planning on doing lit for VCE, u reckon that's still a good idea since jmss is a science school. It depends on how confident you are at English. Obviously JMSS still offers it so they have people doing the subject and getting reasonable scores but a lot of people also consider it to be the hardest English subject. In the end it matters on what you want and what you’re prepared to work hard at.

Tell her you will meet good people. Make a power point slide that is a good idea. One more thing start studying like doing some textbooks as this could help convince your parents. But, if your mum doesn’t want you to go then I don’t know try to convince her and tell her you won’t procrastinate. What’s everyone’s instas I’ll add you all??Ill pm u it

You got in? How many from this forum? Lol I've just been reading this forum for months but I'm going tooo hopefullyI got an offer too ;D I really want to go - just gotta convince my mum now.
Hi, Hello
It is really rare. You can only get a offer if someone in your school rejects the offer.
It doesn’t matter how many people from your school reject their offers - after the interviews everyone was ranked so there is a waiting list. If you’re near the top of the list even if people from your school don’t reject their offers you’ll still have a chance.
So it doesn’t matter whether or not people accept their offers. You’ll either get a second round or not.

Anyone wanna share their results for the tests if they got them?
Someone made a 2022 entry thread with a pretty good guide so go look at that if u wanna know about interviews etc.
The website is being dodgy but the registration isn’t up yet and you have till around March ish to register anyways.
did anyone else risk it all, and not do their school work, and only study for jmss
Anyone travelling to JMSS from West, please? This is the old topic Comrade. There is a 2022 one ;)
