Title: COLLINE VS VCAA | Who will come out victorious?
Post by: colline on January 21, 2019, 10:55:32 pm
-- Colline’s Battle Through VCE --

Hey hey hey!! :)) I thought I’d jump on board the VCE Journal bandwagon! School starts in just over a week, so I think now is a good time to start!

Through this journal I hope to record all the details of my final year of high school, and of course, my final triumph over the dictatorial regime VCAA has over my life. VCE is a battle, and a long one too, so I thought this would be an appropriate name for my journal.

The journey so far:
I have already completed two VCE subjects, Literature and Dance. Coming from a performing background, I've always planned on doing Dance - unfortunately I couldn't do VET Dance (the more vocational option), so I had to do VCE. The theory aspects of VCE Dance were really challenging for me, and I gradually lost interest and motivation as the year wore on. In the end, I got a 31 study score, which scales to 29.

My other subject, Literature, was an accident. I meant to do 1/2 Lit, but there weren't enough people so the subject got cancelled. I didn't want to go through DECV, neither did I want to do Mainstream or English Language, so after a series of incredibly long emails and "fights"with the school, I was allowed into the 3/4 class. Throughout the year, I forfeited everything to work on lit, as I wanted to show the school they made the right choice letting me in the class. It paid off and I got a 50 (yippee!).

I have also done a VET subject - music industry (performance). It was honestly a bit of a fluke - I didn't even realise VET studies could count towards the ATAR until after results came out. I thoroughly enjoyed the subject though, and it came with a nice certificate which VCE Music doesn't give you. ;)

What’s to come:
We’ve finally reached year 12 – 2019! This year I am doing 4 subjects, which are further maths, methods, biology, and chemistry. Chemistry will definitely be my biggest challenge as I didn’t do 1/2 (I did 1/2 psychology). I had worked through most of the 1/2 textbook, especially all those stoichiometry stuff (which still really confuses me), so I hope it doesn’t put me at too much of a disadvantage.

I thoroughly enjoyed general last year, although methods 1/2 was a pain. However, I have a better teacher this year, and transition went well, so I’m looking forward to it. Biology… *urgh* - I nearly dropped out last year because of how much I hated it. I actually loved psychology 1/2 but ended up picking biology over it as it would have more overlapping content with chemistry.

Aims and goals:
VCE: Further: 47+ | Methods: 45+ | Biology: 40+ | Chemistry: ??? I don’t really have an idea of what I should aim for.
ATAR: I usually say 99+, but my dream is >99.90 (Melbourne Chancellors) fat chance lol. I think chemistry will definitely drag down my ATAR
Uni: Bachelor of Science / Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Melbourne Uni. (98.50 ATAR guarantee).
I’ve considered med, but let’s be realistic, I’ll never get in. Still, I’ll be sitting the UCAT (after months and months of being plagued by UMAT-related nightmares), just don’t bank on too much hope. Also, I just happen to like animals better than humans.

A little bit more about me:
I just realised that I’ve been going on and on about my subjects and it sounds like I have no life lol!

So uh, bit more about me – I’m from the Eastern suburbs, I have an unhealthy obsession with halal food (no matter how VCE and uni turns out, I plan on opening my very own kebab shop in the future), I have two younger siblings, one who’s in year 10 and is also doing biology 3/4 (I hope I beat him lmao), my MBTI is INFP according to BuzzFeed, and I have zero hours on my Ls! :)

My biggest hobby is learning about military tactics, battle strategies, and weaponry, especially those from ancient times. (All for *cough* academic purposes, I swear). I’ve read ”The Art of War” by Sun Tzu about twenty times, and hopefully one day I’ll learn Chinese so I can read the original. I also have a collection of works by Barry Strauss, who’s a military and naval historian. I actually considered doing history for VCE, but I heard that history subjects mainly focus on society and politics rather than the more interesting wars and battles, so no thanks!
My username comes from Battle of Porta Collina, also known as the Battle of the Colline Gates, an ancient battle in Rome.

That’s all from me today, folks! See you all soon <3

School starts in just over a week, so I think now is a good time to start!

One week.... so sad. I'll be in year 12 this year too.

I actually loved psychology 1/2 but ended up picking biology over it as it would have more overlapping content with chemistry.

Psych is so goooodddd, I sound nerdy but I loved studying it, so if you enjoyed 1/2 I reckon it might be worth continuing on, especially if you aren't as interested in biology.  :o

Um with that raw 50 Lit (whaattt) I think you seem like a person with a ton of perseverance and determination, so you have a good chance of getting whatever you want  ;D ;D Also I get that UCAT nightmare, I'm so nervous already!

BTW, I'm doing lit this year, and I read your thread. It was super helpful!!  ;D

Anyway, looking forward to your VCE journey journal!

Hey Colline! You've smashed it so far, so good signs for what's ahead! I can definitely sympathise for the 'no hours on Ls' thing, I haven't even gone for mine yet  :-[

Yeah I agree psychology is amazing! I'm planning on working through some 3/4 content at my own place throughout this year because I actually love it! And my free periods are on at the same time as a psychology class so I'll be crashing a couple of those too ;D
Congratulations on your super amazing score by the way!

Oh please don't say that! ;D Literature is so different to UCAT and all these science-y subjects I'm doing this year :-[ Are you aiming for undergrad med? Good luck!

Hope you enjoy literature! It's such a fun subject. All the best for year 12 ~

Thank you guys so much :) :)

Are you planning to get into music as a career?
Nope! It's just something fun that I like doing in my spare time. My career plan would be to become a vet, music is a hobby.
I absolutely love reading your VCE journal! And your Japanese skills are siiiick! All the best for this year ~

Hello yes hi I am seriously so excited for this!! I read about your Lit score and guide a while back and was blown away! I think everyone who's read so far has had their jaw drop multiple times, you have really achieved some brilliant things!

Also, I just added The Art of War to my wishlist, looks fascinating! Sidenote, humanities subjects, particularly history are the best!! I think you would've really enjoyed Ancient history, I know I loved it!

I have no doubts that you will really smash 2019 and emerge victorious, it's crazy how well you've done already in all aspects of your life, your work ethic and perseverance is amazing to see!

Also, I just happen to like animals better than humans.

I have never read anything more relatable in my life.

Update soon, can’t wait!!! :)

01 / 02 / 2019 – Friday Week 1 Term 1

Hiya guys!!! The first month of 2019 has already passed! I’m so excited to start updating -- school has finally started!! I know I sound hyped right now but that’ll most likely die down after we’ve all settled into year 12. Oh god it sounds so weird to say!

So the 30th of Jan was my very last first day of school. The new year 12s had an assembly of our principal lecturing us on behaviour, like “It’s your last year so I expect all of you to take it seriously” and “You may have skipped classes in the past, but this year you need to keep up a 97% attendance in order to pass”.
THAT point was worrying, as the 97% attendance rule is newly introduced this year, and it doesn’t just mean a 97% attendance overall – it’s across ALL your classes, including your elective! (Yeah, we have electives, in year 12! WUT????). That means we can miss no less than FOUR classes per subject throughout the entire year! Does any other school do this or is mine just mental??
I heard that other schools normally have a 90% attendance policy?

Oh right, electives! I forgot to mention in my opening post (oh I don’t know, perhaps coz it’s so trivial?) but all students at my school does an elective per semester. even if you’ve got all your VCE exams coming up!! I’ve got chess and robotics. While I look forward to them, I can’t help but think those double periods could be better spent preparing for something that could potentially impact how my life turns out.

Also, I was really sad that I couldn’t make it to the AN meet up the day before school began. Something came up last-minute (by which I mean, I misinterpreted the holiday homework ‘one chapter of methods’ as ‘one exercise’, so I spent the whole day catching up).

=== === ===

Moving on, classes are so far going well! (I mean, we are only two days into the year!)

Here’s my timetable this year. Luckily, I get a lot of free periods; sadly, I still have to go to school every second Wednesday even though my only class is the double elective!
So THIS is what people use imgur for!

Further is amazing. Have I mentioned that I did general for TWO YEARS? It’s SO refreshing to FINALLY do 3/4. We haven’t done much in terms of content yet, it’s mainly been our teacher checking holiday work and cracking maths puns ::).
I’m yet to find out when my first SAC is, but I’ve already gotten hold of some past ones. Apparently in further every mark you lose is -1 study score?? And you HAVE to be rank 1 to get a 50? Why on earth does it scale down when it’s SO competitive?

Methods is WAY better than last year. I’ve got my favourite teacher in the entire school, so while I never liked the subject, I also hate to disappoint her. She’s the same teacher I had for VET music in year 9 and 10, I can’t believe how lucky I am to have her in year 12 too. It’s definitely weird to see her teach maths though.
My biggest complaint about methods is that we’re using the Jacaranda book, but I’ve heard that Cambridge is more recommended?

Up next we have the ~dreaded~ biology. Our teacher is new, a recent uni graduate in his mid 20’s who honestly could pass for a Year 9 if he wore uniform. Imagine my shock when he walked in to class introducing himself as our teacher!
Anyway, I’ve started on content at my own place, mainly following along Edrolo. It sucks that my school doesn’t use Edrolo, so I’m borrowing someone else's account.

Finally, chemistry. Class starts with a good old pop quiz that I scored an AMAZING 2 out of 15 on. I pretty much forced the teacher to go over them with me after class, and to my relief they ended up mostly making sense! She was kind enough to email me some extra worksheets later on which I intend on doing over the weekend.
Stoichiometry is still confusing. It honestly could be a subject of its own. And is memorising all those different types of fuels REALLY necessary? Surely it's more background knowledge than something that we could ACTUALLY get tested on!

=== === ===

Final thing, WE GOT YEAR 12 HOODIES TODAY! My school don't allow nicknames, but at least it’s better than not getting one at all. I was in period 6, biology, and our school captain was also in the same class. He got a notification that the hoodies arrived and the entire year 12 sector of our class leaped out of our seats and pretty much bolted for them. Our principal, who was monitoring the whole thing, remarked “There sure are a lot of people with free periods today”, and this one kid in line, oblivious to the situation, responded “Oh no sir, we came out of biology for this! Mr [biology teacher] said we could!”
The student instantly realised his mistake, but the damage was done. All of us were herded back to our classrooms and a minute later the speakers rang out, “ALL YEAR 12 STUDENTS MUST REMAIN IN CLASS. HOODIES TO BE COLLECTED AFTER SCHOOL.”

I think that’ll do for this update. There’s already a PILE of work I’ll need to get through, so I can’t afford to procrastinate much longer. How has everyone else’s first week of school been?

Colline xx

Damn 97% attendance is a bit rough :o
My school had 90% - and the option to stay back after school to do make up classes if we were below attendance requirements. I don't think I had 97% attendance for any of my classes in year 12.

I did an elective in year 12 too! It was by choice though - I didn't know that some schools make you do them! On one hand I suppose it'd be nice to have time to relax for a bit - can't be studying constantly after all, but I get what you mean about it feeling like wasted time - towards the end of last year I felt like I was wasting my time by showing up to school at all haha.

Hey! I've enjoyed reading your journal so far and wish you the very best of luck for your studies this year. It's clear from your past results and your commitment so far that you're definitely capable of achieving great things and I'd encourage you to keep aiming high :) and give yourself a break every now and then :)

I also want to commend you for tackling 3/4 chem without the 1/2. Stoich is no easy task, I completely get your frustrations, but if I can offer any advice it'd be to really stick at it because it will come up everywhere. That being said, going through the questions that you're confused with and getting assistance is the perfect attitude to have and will definitely pay off.. well done!!

How are you finding the homework/workload so far? Do you have much of a study routine?
Best of luck again and keep up the hard work :D

We had one of those a couple of years ago, but we haven't run one since! :)

@Colline: I'm glad the workload has been manageable thus far, hopefully you'll get back into the rhythm of a study schedule soon, I know how hard it is to get back into the swing of things after the holidays! :))

17 / 02 / 2019 – Sunday Week 3 Term 1

We’re now about to enter week 4 of year 12! It STILL doesn’t feel real!

The workload has been surprisingly manageable, however I’m worried as (with the exception of further) I’m not ahead in any subject. I’ve been told, many many times, to always be ahead, as you’ll eventually burn out and that way you won’t be left behind. But I’m doing ANYTHING but that!
With methods, biology, and chemistry, I always feel like I’m learning the content for the first time in class, while my classmates have already done the necessary preparations beforehand. I do chapter questions and worksheets AFTER class, while my peers do them BEFORE. I try to do them in advance but nothing makes sense until I hear the teacher explain it in class! See the problem here?
I’m not technically behind, but I feel like I might as well be. Help! I’m so, so worried that once I burn out I won’t be able to catch up again! And the year just started! :'(

Alright, depressing rant over!! Now onto my actual subjects:

Methods isn’t too bad, and having a teacher who I’m not afraid to approach and treats me like a friend definitely helps. She likes to make music analogies in class, which I LOVE. Our SAC isn’t till next term, which is both mildly comforting and scary at the same time. Comforting cos well, one less SAC for term 1. Scary cos who thought it was a good idea to make a SAC worth 17% of you study score?

Biology is just dull. There is so much rote learning but I feel like no matter how many times I look over my notes, they just don’t stay in my head! Our first SAC is, get ready for this, ON. MY. BIRTHDAY. What kind of sadist planned this? :’(
I seriously get depressed just thinking about this SAC right now. There's still about a month away, but I feel like I'm not prepared AT ALL and the teacher is going through content at a faster rate than my brain can possibly absorb!

Chemistry is currently... a nightmare. The rote-learning of different fuels is dull but manageable, but stoichiometry is just HORRIBLE! Mols, molar mass, mass, m, n, M… that formula keeps dancing around in my mind until the three letters are completely jumbled up. It doesn’t help that I keep thinking ‘m’ stands for ‘mol’, because ‘n’ just doesn’t make sense!
SAC 1 is on Friday, 1st of March.

Further is the only comfort of my life right now. For the first time, I’m thankful that I repeated general, as I had a year to solidify my foundation of 1/2, while learning 3/4 content without the pressure. This is the only subject I’m ahead in, as I had finished the textbook last year so now I’m going through past SACs and exams. I’m still worried about how competitive this subject is though!
Our first SAC is on Tuesday, 12th of March.

Chess, my elective, has been great – it offers a welcoming break from studying. Our teacher allows year 12s to do our own work, but I’ve actually been taking part in games because it’s SUCH a good break. I spent our last elective teaching the class the four move checkmate, so it was definitely productive ;D
ALSO, AN Chess match sounds amazing!!! We should definitely run another one!

My only extra-curricular activity this year is concert band, where I play flute and piccolo (you know, that instrument that makes everybody’s ears bleed?). We have a fundraising concert next Saturday, but I won’t be able to make it as I have tutoring. :’(

Speaking of tutoring, I really want to know how much people normally do in year 12? Currently, the only subject I get tutored in is chemistry, 2hrs per week, which I’m told isn’t enough. I’m wondering whether I should start tutoring for methods and biology as well, but it’s crazy expensive! I feel like I need it, but at the same time I’m afraid that I won’t see much improvement and that it’s not worth the money.

That’s all for this update today! Tomorrow teachers will be charging through more and more content, pray for me that I don’t get left behind!!

Colline out xx

I’m not technically behind, but I feel like I might as well be. Help! I’m so, so worried that once I burn out I won’t be able to catch up again! And the year just started! :'(

Please don't let this bother you too much!! Being ahead won't do you any harm of course but it's definitely not essential or the norm and if you're up to date with every subject you really have no reason to worry. It seems you're surrounded by very high achievers; let it motivate you but (speaking from experience here :P) spending time worrying about what others are doing is time wasted. I think you should keep up what you're doing ATM and be proud that you're handling the workload well - if you have time amongst homework or revision to read ahead then take the opportunity, but if you're up to date and at least know what's coming up in each subject (this doesn't mean have work done before its assigned; just having a good awareness of what you're covering and what theory/tasks are approaching) is a really good place to be in. In fact, overworking and stressing trying to get ahead is probably going to increase the chance and degree of burnout!!

As for your subjects; I did both chem and bio and definitely understand your concerns with overwhelming content and frustrating stoic. Just keep chipping away at it (lousy advice, sorry :/). Personally, handwriting and revising (while walking home, on transit etc) cue cards really helped me rote learn definitions/concepts etc for both subjects. Once I had my head around the theory, practice questions were the best way to apply my learning and prepare for SACs, but I'm sure you're very much aware of those. Keep at it; it'll get easier and you'll start to see links between theory/patterns in answering questions - I believe in you!!

I had some of the same concerns last year. If I can give you any advice, it's (again) - what others are doing in terms of tuition is completely irrelevant so don't worry about it; everyone learns differently and tutoring is NOT essential. I received no tutoring last year - despite thinking I needed it and despite being surrounded by people who were getting tutoring - and I received an ATAR and study scores that completely exceeded my expectations. Of course, tutoring can be really positive and helpful for many but realistically, its expensive and time consuming, and you should NEVER feel guilty/discouraged for not having it. Play it by ear based on your own circumstances; if the chemistry tutoring is making a positive difference, keep it up if you can, and 2hrs is definitely sufficient... as for the other subjects, perhaps give it a bit longer before you seek tutoring, maybe see how you do in your first SACs, and also make the most of your teachers and the AN community!!

Hope some of this helps (sorry if it got ramble)...Best of luck and hope to hear more about your experiences :)

01 / 03 / 2019 – Friday, Week 5 Term 1

Hey everyone!! I’m excited to be back for another update – a much more optimistic one than last time!

Biology is still the bane of my existence (yes I promised an optimistic update, I just wanna get this out of the way first! Pls bear with me). Our SAC has been moved to an earlier date, so at least now I can have a relatively stress-free birthday.
Also idk if this is concerning or not, but I STILL can’t remember the equation for photosynthesis and this is about as basic as you can get in biology!

Chemistry – we had our very first SAC! I feel obligated describe this unforgettable experience:

Spoiler
Obviously it wasn’t my first time doing a SAC, but it WAS my first time doing it with a large cohort. At my school, subjects with large cohorts (English, bio, chem, psych, methods, further, HHD, and legal) do all their SACs together in a professionally conducted exam setting in the gym afterschool, as opposed to smaller cohorts who do SACs in individual classrooms during class time supervised by one teacher. As you can probably imagine, the atmosphere of a large-cohort SAC is a lot more intense.

I had double methods before the SAC, except NO ONE did anything maths related. Our poor teacher spent the entire double confiscating everyone’s chemistry notebooks, textbooks, and eventually laptops and phones as we desperately tried to find new ways to revise. During lunch I couldn’t eat at all. I was just SO nervous. When last period ended and the announcement rang for all 3/4 chemistry students to make our way to the gym and line up in alphabetical order, I just felt nauseous. It was the same feeling last year, walking into my final literature exam, except this was just a SAC!

Looking back now, I was probably being overdramatic. In my defense, EVERYONE was tense. It honestly felt like a real VCAA exam.
Anyway, the SAC wasn’t TOO bad (touch wood!) and I’m sure I passed. Whether or not I passed with a good score is another matter.

Methods is really starting to grow on me. Maybe it’s cos of my teacher - the only teacher in the entire school who I’m comfortable with.
My biggest problem right now is learning how to use the CAS efficiently. I know there are many shortcuts and functions but I’m so used to doing everything by hand – sadly not an option when questions look like “Sketch 5.829t^2 + 0.084t - 3.51”

Further is still going great! I got a 96% on my most recent practice SAC on data analysis! Mostly marks were lost over silly mistakes like copying numbers in the wrong order.
I’m hoping to tackle a full exam soon!

Final thing – UCAT – registration opened this morning. Of course the actual test is still MONTHS away but I can already feel stress levels rising. I don’t even need the UCAT lmao, since medicine isn’t my aim, but how different is treating animals? Surely my UCAT performance would also be an indicator of whether or not I’d make a good vet.

I haven't done a single UCAT practice paper yet, unless you count the couple of past UMAT questions I've done in my free time. As I don't really need it, I'm planning to not spend that much energy on this test (though I do get stressed whenever somebody brings it up!)

Pretty short update. There'll be more to write on once I get all my SACs done for this term (~shudders~).

Also OMG I was so excited to see my music performance tips post in the post of the months list! Thanks AN so much for such a lovely shout out <3 it really made my day! I honestly didn't think anyone would find it helpful since it's such an unpopular subject! :)

Love you guys!

Colline <3

Hi Colline! I don’t really post alot but I’ve been reading your journal and absolutely love it!! You always sound so enthusiastic and optimistic about your subjects :-) based on what you’ve achieved in previous years I have no doubt that you will do great in 2019.

Best of luck for this year, though you probably don’t need it ;) can’t wait to read more!!

Great update. :)

Hey Joseph! It's simply tragic when that happens, doesn't it? ;D And it's crazy to think that one mistakes is -1 study score so you can't afford to do that in the final exam!
Thank you so much for reading <3

=====

Labor Day holiday tomorrow! I really need to catch up on some much needed zzzzz but I should also study for biology and further (SACs are both early next week... yikes!).

We're still waiting on our chemistry SAC results. Apparently twelve students FAILED (<40%) this SAC. I had previously been pretty confident about passing but this news is definitely a blow to my optimism. Still, I'm remaining hopeful that I scored around 50% at least.

Hopefully next time I'll bear some positive news! See you all then <3

Looking good Colline! Don't stress too much about your Chem score, as the only relevance is where you still in comparison to your cohort. Obviously, you don't want to fail but if 11 others also did, they'll surely scale it appropriately and your ranking is ultimately all that matters.

015 / 03 / 2019 – Friday, Week 7 Term 1

As of today, I am officially 17!
Don’t ask me how I feel – I still feel the same lmao.

So….… SACs! Geez, there sure were a lot of them this week. I finally got further and biology out of the way, and also got chemistry back (er… more on that later).

Biology: I ended up doing the SAC a little bit later than everyone else as I fell horribly sick on the day. Here’s a piece of advice lads or rather, common sense – do NOT pull all-nighters! I was going through pages and pages of questions, drilling definitions and diagrams into my brain until half past 3 in the morning when I went to get some water and my room was legit SPINNING when I stood up.
My brother, who’s in year 10 but is also doing 3/4, told me all the questions on the SAC. The teachers had enough foresight to give me a different paper.
Rant- can anyone relate to having a much smarter younger sibling, cos my brother will probably end up with an SS twice as high as mine.
Also also also, I’m actually so sick of words than ends in -sis right now.

Prediction: I honestly don’t even think I passed, tbh. Last year I would always do well on SACs I thought I did badly in – but then again last year I did two of the world’s most arbitrary subjects. Science is different and I KNOW I got less than half the questions right.

Further: This was the data analysis SAC and it was AMAAAAZING. If only all my SACs could be like this. A couple of questions in there seemed to be straight up copy-and-pasted from past VCAA exams but with different numbers and people’s names. I guess that’s a good thing? More practice of exam style questions can’t be bad.
Prediction: >90%

Methods: Nothing too update-worthy. My music methods teacher is still the most lovely person on this planet and she’s really making me love everything about this subject. She has also given me an endless supply of worksheets which I’m incredibly thankful for. I’m now ahead in content!

And that’s it for this update! Thank you for reading :)

Wait what? What about my chemistry SAC? Oh right, sorry, I totally forgot.

Chemistry: I passed. Just. 45% to be exact. E+. I had a feeling I did badly before I even saw my score. You can just see it coming if the teacher hands it back faced down when everyone else got theirs facing up.
I’ve never scored so low. And to think this goes towards my ATAR! I know what others say, that there’s still hope, that one SAC means nothing, that it’s only 8% of my SS… but at the end of the day it’s still a lousy score.
To be honest, 45% is generous - I got lucky. A question had calculations involving natural gas, so I used the values for natural gas from the data book. However, the rest of the cohort used the value for methane, as it makes up 90% of natural gas. Turns out you weren’t supposed to use methane, so I got it right. But here’s the kicker – the only reason I used natural gas was because I DIDN’T EVEN KNOW IT CONTAINED METHANE. +1 mark for sheer dumb luck.
The average mark was in the high 60s. YIKES!

And we’ve finally reached the end of this update. If you’re still reading, thanks for sticking through my ~long~ rants. Love you all! :)

hi colline! i absolutely love reading your vce journal! are you planning on updating soon?  :)
hope you don't mind but i have a question - why did you choose vet for music but not vet for dance? for performance subjects, are there significant differences between vce and vet? i have a friend who's thinking of doing music performance for vce but doesnt know whether or not she should do  the vet version.
sorry for hijacking your journal. thanks!!!
congrats on all your amazing scores by the way, you'll smash it this year!  ;D

29 / 03 / 2019  -  Friday  Week 9, Term 1

AND THAT'S A WRAP ON TERM ONE! Can you believe it? We're now 1/4 of the way through!! Should I be getting nervous?

We had an early finish today which is definitely welcomed!

Further: We just got our SAC back last period – and I got a 96%. Not a bad score IMO, but I definitely could’ve done better – all my marks were lost over silly mistakes like forgetting a negative sign in one question and accidentally swapping the numerator and denominator in another.
~facepalm~
What worries me is that for all my silly mistakes, the teacher took 0.5 marks off. But VCAA doesn’t do half marks do they? So in reality, my score should’ve been around a 90%.
I got the highest mark in my class, and rank 2 in my year level (someone got full marks haha). Ngl, I’m aiming for rank one in further. I really have to work on not making silly mistakes from now on.

Biology: Well I guess I better talk about the SAC too. I did better than expected, which doesn’t say much considering my prediction was 40. I ended up getting a 58%, which isn’t GREAT but honestly I’m just thankful I didn’t fail. Now swap those two digits around and you get my brother’s SAC score LOL.
As for rankings - I don't know exactly where I rank but it's not too hard to estimate. The average was nearly 70%, which isn't good news for me.

Methods: I'm having such a conflicted relationship with it. On some days it’s all I want to do and on other I just want to chuck Math Quest out the window. Please tell me I’m not the only one who feels like this 24/7.
In terms of progress, I recently finished calculus and have moved on to probability. My plan is to finish all the content before the start of term 2, so that I can start powering through exam-style questions earlier. I’m hoping that probability would be a breeze, considering the overlaps with further.

Chemistry: Still a nightmare. Apparently our next SAC (dear god, we’re onto our second SAC already??) will be within the first week of term 2. Wow! How comforting.

Chess: I've kinda given up. Our teacher lets year 12s do whatever we want, so I've just been showing up to roll-call so that I don't fail the '97% attendance' part. Haven't taken part in games at all, instead retreating to the library immediately after marking my off name to work on actual subjects. Not the best mindset lol.

Still haven't taken even a GLANCE at UCAT practice questions at all, and the test is looming closer and closer. I've registered, so I probably SHOULD take this seriously, but there's just so much happening at once! :P

For the holidays, my number one focus is methods, methods, METHODS! The goal is to finish all textbook questions. For further, I'm aiming to complete two company trial exams (don't wanna start VCAA ones just yet). I've got an abundance of worksheets for biology and chemistry which I should also get through, and maybe finally do SOMETHING for the UCAT!

Let's see how long I can keep myself accountable for (lol). My bet is three days. ;D

Thanks for sticking through the first term of year 12 with me <3 I'm so glad I started this journal!!

Love you all,

Colline xx

Hey Jean24601! Thanks for reading :) I don't update too often, otherwise I might just spend too much time procrastinating!

Don't mind your question at all! I chose VET music cos that was what my school offered. And VCE dance due to scaling, which was a REALLY dumb decision because in hindsight I would've done much better in VET honestly even with the -6 scaling.

As for the difference between the two: VET is more focused on application while VCE has a lot of theory. That was another reason why I went for VET music - I know nothing about music theory! VCE performance exams all have a practical AND a written component, while VET only has practical.

(Also VET tend to scale down more than VCE but don't focus on this too much!)

I would suggest to ask your friend whether she's better with practical or theory - if practical, go for VET. If theory, VCE. Also, if she's thinking of a career in music, VET might be better as you actually get a qualification at the end that looks quite good on the CV! (But then I might be biased lol!)

23 / 04 / 2019  -  Tuesday  (Term 1 Holidays)

Heyyyy!! Should probably update now that the holidays are (*sniff*) almost over.

Further: Going well. Having finished all the content, I've now started working through all of my school's past SACs and trial exams. For the past week I completed one set of trial exam every two days (paper 1 one day, paper 2 the next), and while it was productive, I'm thoroughly DONE with further (don't overdose yourself on practice questions, lads).

Methods: I've finished all the content! Hurrah! Unfortunately, I didn't quite get through as many past papers as I had hoped. Actually, I didn't get through any at all. Concerning, I know. I literally JUST finished the last of the textbook questions this morning, which was a lot slower than initially planned.

Chemistry: ~whelp~   equilibrium and reaction rates are ridiculously confusing. The PARTIAL opposition thingo keeps messing me up (especially with colour changes. ARGH). With the AOS 2 SAC coming up early next term, my goal is to get a 60%.

Biology: Dear Andrew Douche, God bless you. May you live a long and prosperous life because if I somehow get above 35 in bio all credit goes to you.

During the holidays, I also went to the AN meet-up and had a great time meeting so many of you! Learnt quite a lot, such as how 3-hour exams are the norm in uni (rip) and that a game of One Night Ultimate Werewolf could get ~rather heated~. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it to any of the lectures and had to give my tickets to a friend 😢.

Looking ahead, on Thursday and Friday we have parent-teacher interviews, and my dad has booked one with each of my teachers so there's no escaping. The chemistry SAC on rates and equilibrium is in week 2, so I should really start a practice SAC soon.

That's all for today folks. Sorry it took me forever to update. Hope everyone's holidays have been (somewhat) productive, and Happy (late) Easter!

Colline xx

On a completely unrelated note, how many people woke up this morning to texts saying "What was the holiday homework again?"

Oooh look at me being such a rebel

Hello hello hello!!! I’ve deserted this journal for over a month, but with the release of exam timetable today, I guess I better get back into it!

So first things first: EXAM TIMETABLE! My schedule is as follows:

Friday 1st
Biology (morning)
Further 1 (afternoon)

Monday 4th
Further 2

Wednesday 6th
Methods 1

Thursday 7th
Methods 2

Tuesday 12th
Chemistry

It absolutely boggles my mind why VCAA would consistently put biology and further on the same day, considering what a common combination it is! The fact that there’s gotta be at least 1000 other students in the same boat as me provides little comfort. Who’s bright idea was this anyway? ::)

Moving onto SACs yikes  chemistry, biology, and METHODS are FINALLY DONE! Chem and bio sucked. Especially chem, but boy am I glad that I'll never have to lay my eyes on another equilibrium graph ever again at least until I have to revise for exams but hey let's not think about that shall we.

I haven't gotten biology back yet, but chemistry scores came out yesterday, and I GOT A 73%!! I know it probably sounds ridiculously low to many of y'all but considering I got a 45% last SAC, I'm over the moon. Shout-out to a certain AN user (you know who you are ;)) for all the help, without it I would've failed for sure. <3

Methods went much better! We only JUST finished this SAC, which quite honestly felt like it went on for FOREVER. I don't know how other schools did it, but my school had the entire SAC split into 3 different parts, each taking up a double period. Two parts were collaborative (tech free and tech active), and finally there's an individual tech-active SAC.

I was majorly dreading the collab parts: if we were allowed to collude, then surely they must be INSANELY difficult papers! During part 1, my hands were honestly SHAKING when I flipped open the page. To my surprise (and great relief), the questions weren't hard, BUT there were so many of them and no one could finish it in time. We learnt from our mistake for part 2, efficiently splitting up work equally between members of the class. Part 3, the individual SAC, was on a whole another level.

I'm fairly certain that I got around 70% for part 1, and close to 100% for part 2. Anything close to a 60% for part 3 would be nothing short of a miracle, so pray for me guys, cos I need it!

So what's coming up? Well, there's the financial SAC for further, which I'm feeling kinda confident with. We've also started on our chem practical investigation posters, which I'm actually kind of looking forward to. What I am NOT looking forward to is bio, though thank goodness the research poster is still ages away.

(https://i.imgur.com/kMRyze9.png)Fight me 8)

That's all for today folks! I promise I won't wait another month for the next update!

Byeeee! <3

Awwww mango you're the sweetest <3 <3 thanks for the (much needed!!) encouragement! Good luck with your studies too (and keep us posted on your journal!), we're halfway there!!! xx

Ok this really isn't an "update" (no updates actually, still waiting on bio and methods scores... Why do teachers have to be so SLOW) but I only had ONE class today in the morning, the rest of the day being either free periods or cancelled classes. So after class I went to the city to meet up with a friend who goes to Melbourne Uni. He was giving me a tour around the campus and LOOK WHAT I SAW!!

Spoiler

ASDFGHJKLKJHGF IS THIS WHAT UNI IS LIKE OMG THIS IS ABSOLUTE HEAVEN.

ALSO ALSO ALSO there was a random barbecue going on, and on the other side of the campus, there was a club handing out free hot chocolate?? I'm sorry but university sounds like my idea of paradise!

Maybe by this time next year I'll read back on this and laugh my head off but tertiary education seems pretty damn good to me!

21 / 06 / 2019  -  Friday

Hello hello beautiful people!!

Sorry for my prolonged absence yet again but I'm backkkkk and I come with good news!!

First off, I've survived Unit 3 mostly unscathed! Mostly, further results are still pending and also because the emotional trauma cannot be ignored.

But here comes the main news... I'm rank 1 for methods!!!!!

We got our SACs back today (both the collaborative and individual parts), and at first I was a little bummed at my results. My overall score was 88%, which is decent, but I was hoping for 90s. I had gotten full marks for the collaborative task 2, and 95 for individual, but only 70 for collaborative 1 which really sabotaged my overall score. But here's the kicker: only the individual counts towards rankings!

Why the school would put us through THREE SACs when only ONE counted is beyond me.

Both me and another student got 95, which were the highest marks in the cohort! If you've read my last update, you'll probably know that I'm incredibly surprised because I thought I really screwed up the individual SAC. I'm absolutely stoked.

Chemistry and biology, on the other hand...

For the chemistry SAC on equilibrium (which took the teachers aaaages to mark considering we did this at the start of the term) I got 57%. Better than the first SAC, that's for sure, but not good enough. For the cell communication SAC (bio), I just made it to 60% - a negligible improvement from SAC 1.

Study score predictions
We've also gotten estimations from our teachers:
-- Further: 44 ~ 47
-- Methods: 42 ~ 45
-- Biology: 32 ~ 35
-- Chemistry: 30 ~ 33
Which would give me an estimated ATAR of 98.80 ~ 99.40

If there's one thing I've learnt from my previous 3/4s though, it's that the estimates are only ever estimates. They're not set in stone and considering we're only halfway through the year, there are so many factors at play which could change these numbers.

My goal? To not become careless and lax for maths, and to start working much harder on bio and chem.

See you all soon!! Good luck to everyone for unit 4!

Thank you for your super encouraging words Prag! And absolutely no worries, more than happy to help! Thanks for your shout-out by the way, it made my day!

With biology, I think I give it more crap in this journal than it deserves haha! It’s a great subject and the topics are interesting (especially evolution), I’m just very inept at the subject hence my tendency to rant about how much I hate it 😂 I prefer subjects with less rote-learning and more application - like maths; but biology (to me) just consists of remembering things and also remembering how VCAA wants you to write your answers. It might just be because I haven’t gotten the hang of the subject, as my smarter friends see bio as an application subject too.

And yes I would’ve definitely done another subject — I only discovered recently that the course I hope to get into has PHYSICS as a prerequisite! So if I could choose my subjects all over again, I'd probably go for further, methods, chem, physics; or all three maths and physics.

Good luck with your journey too and with your subject selections! :))
Hi colline! It's very unfortunate that Physics was a prereq. Are you sure Physics was an option because most prereqs for courses state "blah blah methods blah blah english 25 study score in either Chemistry or Physics blah blah"

Yeah, physics 3/4 is a prereq for Veterinary Medicine at Melbourne Uni, which is what I'm aiming for. I don't really get it cos surely chem and bio would be more relevant? Like, chem is a prereq for med but physics isn't.

The good thing is I can make up for it by doing physics at uni, but I wish I'm doing it now so I can explore other options and do more electives in uni.

Here's an excerpt from the Melbourne Uni website:
Quote
If you’re looking to become a vet, after successful completion of second-year studies you can specialise in Veterinary Bioscience, a pathway to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. You'll need to have completed VCE Physics 3 and 4, or level 1 Physics subject in your first year or equivalent to be eligible and gain the approval of the Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences before you can specialise.

Ikrr chem or bio would make SO much more sense! Perhaps you could do Biomedicine and learn physics through that? Or maybe you could try out for Monash? Also I was wondering what you think about someone doing both EngLang and Lit in VCE? Do you think it's more of an advantage or a disadvantage? This is a bit late but congrats on your AMAZING scores for Lit and Music Performance!

(Sneakily updating the day before the 30-day warning)

26 / 07 / 2019  -  Friday,  Term 3  Week  2

It’s exciting (and scary) to think that in 108 days, I’ll be ~FREE~ from the dreadful entity that is VCAA. :o

Our final term of school kicked off with the methods U4 AOS1 integration SAC on our FIRST DAY BACK. I know I passed, but I’m kind of desperate to maintain my rank, as snobby as that sounds. It’s probably not the best attitude, but I’m just being real here. I’ll save improving my attitude for another day.

Chemistry is going better — I got A+ on the practical investigation poster! It's a milestone of an achievement for me.

Organic chem is confusing as it’s now overlapping with biology. You’d think that, by also doing bio, I’d have an advantage. Well, if I really do, then this just shows that your other VCE subjects won't make a difference unless you actually have brain cells, and I’m severely lacking in that aspect at the moment.

I'm feeling quite burnt out for Further atm and my marks and rank has slipped. I can't believe I'm feeling burnt out for FURTHER, the subject I'm repeating. You'd think I'd be ahead, but alas, nope.

There was the UCAT. My results were as follows:

-- Verbal Reasoning: 590
-- Decision Making: 760
-- Quantitative Reasoning: 880
-- Abstract Reasoning: 700
-- (Situation Judgement: 633)
Total: 2930

I'm quite disappointed with my score for VR, as I didn't think I'd fall below 600 for any section. I'm pleased with my overall score though, and especially for QR. A few of my friends got over 3000 (wowee :O) but as I'm not really aiming for med, I'm not too fussed.

Final thing - VTAC preferences are coming up! The additional December round offer is a nice addition IMO, as Melbourne Uni's graduate degree packages are included in the December round, and my top two preferences (science/DVM and science/eng) are both GDPs.

Byeee! Hope it doesn't take me another month before the next update :P

Colline, your journal gives me so much motivation I can’t even describe it lmao.
Sorry if you’ve already answered this, but if you aren’t aiming for Med, did you need to do the UCAT for DVM, or was it something extra?
Keep working at it  :D There isn’t long to go, and I’m absolutely positive you’re going to smash it
Looking forward to your next update!

Hi Jeyda! Thank you so much for reading, it's so reassuring to hear that my journal isn't just mindless rambling to everyone ;D

Don't think I've mentioned it, but I've heard older students  talking about the UMAT for years and have always wondered how I would go on it had I aimed for med, so I did it out of sheer curiousity more than anything else.

You don't need the UCAT for DVM. As far as I know, you just need to study veterinary bioscience at Melb Uni for the accelerated pathway (6 years) or general animal health and disease for the normal pathway (7 years).

Thanks for your encouragement! I'm looking forward to your updates too <3

There are less than 74 days until biology, my first exam!!!
(Cue panicked screaming)

Instead of a boring, subject-related update today, this will specifically be on my VTAC preferences.

I haven't finalised my preferences yet, though I know *for sure* my goal is BSci/DVM at Melbourne University, with BSci/MEng as the backup plan. My current plan looks like this:

I seriously considered putting Melbourne Chancellor's Scholars as my top preference, but with how I'm going in chemistry at the moment, it's not looking good for me. I have a pretty solid chance at DVM, though I think my most REALISTIC one is BSci with a graduate degree guarantee to Master of Engineering.

As for my last preference -- La Trobe is the only uni that offers a bachelors degree in vet studies — Veterinary Bioscience and Veterinary Nursing. Only bioscience leads to DVM. The course needs an ATAR of 60.20, meaning I’ve already fulfilled the entry requirements as my current ATAR sits at 69.15.

((Technically Deakin also has the Bachelor of Zoology and Animal Science, but that's not what I'm after))

If anybody has any advice regarding preferences (like if you would order them differently) or if anyone knows any other good potential courses which could lead to DVM, please let me know! I would really appreciate it!

Thanks for reading, see you all soon! <3

xx

(Btw this is really random but I just realised this is my 100th post on AN! 8))

Love your updates colline! Please keep ‘em coming, I love reading them so much!

I was wondering, for your vtac preferences, is there a reason why you don’t have bachelor of science by itself as one of the options? If you got into any of the other courses (except la Trobe) doesn’t that close off vet for you?

How is biology at the moment?  :D

There’s nothing to lose if you keep Melbourne Chancellors on there as first preference except a preference slot. If you can spare one spot, definitely keep chancellors up there!

Hey, thank you so much for reading! ^-^

I don’t have science by itself as a preference because I’d only want to do science if I know for sure it’ll lead to something if that makes sense. Otherwise I’d just do a double degree which would give me more options in the future. I’m aware that means I might potentially close off the door to DVM but at least I’ll have viable backup options as a safety net. To me, doing only a bachelor of science is just too risky.

Biology is alright, we’re more or less finished with content now so I am moving on to revision!

Hi Lear, thanks so much for your suggestion, I really appreciate it! I’ve decided to take my former 8th preference (vet bioscience at La Trobe) off the list and moved everything else one place down so now I have Science Chancellors Scholars as my top preference. I don’t think I’ll get it haha but it’s really good motivation!

Thanks again, and hope uni has been going well for you! :))

Lead to something as in post grad or career?

What's available at the end very much varies depending on your actions along the way, but you certainly can set yourself up for a good exit :)

(Don't feel pressured by me either tho. If you just don't want normal science on there that's fine :P )

Hey colline,
How's Yr 12 been going?
Hey Snow Leopard! Oh my goodness, thanks for bumping this for me, I’ve been seriously neglecting this! Everything has been quite busy recently, with exams looming close and all, and I simply haven’t had the time to update.

----------

07 / 10 / 2019  -  Monday  Term 4  Week 1

I am now in my final term of high school! (*screams*) With less than one month to go, I thought I’d do a rather long update today as I don’t think I’ll be around much for the next month or so.

Trial Exams (and rankings...?)

We sat our official trial exams at the end of last term. For the most part, they went exactly as I imagined. Best was further, worst was chem. No surprises there. I didn’t even manage to get 50%, which was frustrating.

My trial exam scores were as follows:
Further: 95% (exam 1), 98.3% (exam 2)
Methods: 95% (exam 1), 87.5% (exam 2)
Biology: 73.3%
Chemistry: 44.2%

O chemistry thou heartless villain!

I don't exactly know my rankings for each subject. (How do some people know their exact rankings? Do some schools give them out?) If I had to take a wild guess, I'm ASSUMING top 3 for further (more details below), top 15 for methods, and average for both bio and chem.

Holidays

Such a misleading name, there was really nothing relaxing about my last ever school holidays. They were definitely productive though. I managed to:
   • Attend optional trial exams my school held for further and chem
   • Go to AN’s chem and bio revision lectures
   • Knock out 10 trial exams in my own time - 6 chem, 2 methods, one each for further and bio.

Aside from that I also tried to give myself a break with a friend’s 18th and a Troye Sivan concert. But otherwise, most of the holidays were spent in the most boring fashion at my desk.

Speech Night

My last ever speech night is coming up, held at Docklands. I have three performances on the night, two with the school band, one with the band my friends and I put together. We’re doing a mashup of Adele!

Apart from that though, there’s not much I’m looking forward to. This morning, I was dismayed to find out that despite all my efforts this year, I won’t be getting the subject prize for further. It really came as a shock, as I was certain I had the highest SAC average among the cohort. I really don’t understand why I wasn’t given the subject prize — the student who got it has lower SAC marks than me, and AFAIK I did better than her on the trial exam as well.

I know the subject prize shouldn’t be a big deal, but I really thought I had it in the bag and I am so, so disappointed to find out that all my efforts this year went unrecognised. I mean, it’s not my ultimate goal, but some acknowledgement would've been nice. I know this is such a trivial thing to upset over, but I had been working towards it all year. It was just so crushing to me, and I know I am overreacting but gosh I really thought I had it, and I’m just so disappointed to find out I wasn’t successful.

(Please excuse my pettiness)

I didn’t get the award for methods either, though that was expected since I did badly on the U3 AOS1 SAC. And I never had a chance in bio and chem anyway.

I know the main thing is the exam. If I do well I can certainly still dux further, prove my teachers wrong, but I’m just feeling so unmotivated to study for it right now.

Sorry for such a depressing and overly dramatic rant. We shall now take a slightly more cheery turn for the rest of this post.

What’s coming

Graduation is coming, and I am having mixed feelings. On one hand, I am so glad I can finally be one step closer to freedom; on the other hand, I know I will still absolutely bawl my eyes out. Next, there is SWOTVAC, then finally, the long-awaited exams shall greet us with open arms.

My main plan is to work on maths, as I’m confident further and methods will both be in my top 4 along with music and literature. Bio and chem are guaranteed bottom 2, but still I don’t want to do too badly on them either. So here’s my exam prep checklist:

   - Do the 2019 NHT papers under exam conditions
   - Do CAS exercises every day
   - Redo all the questions I got wrong in past papers and trial exams
   - Write my own exam for further and methods

My methods teacher has challenged me to write my own exam 1 paper as revision. She said that there is no better way to improve than to see if I understand the concepts enough to come up with my own questions. I found that it really helped, so now I’m working on a methods exam 2 paper as well! (Though I’m only doing short answer questions as I think MCQ is a bit redundant).

I might post my exams in the coming weeks, after I get my methods teacher to check it over.

Reflection

Yeah that’s right, cheesy reflection questions a-coming! I stole the questions from a previous VCE journal (specifically this post).

Spoiler
What was your greatest accomplishment in high school?
I would say surviving. Nothing can possibly top that.
Aside from that, proving my lit teacher and the school wrong. I wasn't among the strongest English students from year 7 to year 10 so the school refused to let me do literature as my early 3/4, and after tons of emails, meetings with English teachers, and eventually even the principal, I was allowed in last-minute. It was a nice feeling when I finally smashed their low expectations of me ;D

What was your most memorable event in high school?
Year 12 musical! We did Wicked and I loved every single second of it.
Our 2019 inter house chorals competition was also memorable for all the wrong reasons. My house had won chorals 4 years in a row and this year we had our strongest ever music cohort  (including a student who was once a finalist on the Voice), so everybody expected us to win. Then we stuffed up majorly on stage and came second last, ruining our streak and our reputation. And yes I am petty enough to forever remember that day.

What was your favourite / least favourite extracurricular activity?
Favourite(s): Orchestra! I’ve been in the school orchestra since year 7 and I’ve grown emotionally attached to everything about it.
Least favourite: Can’t really think of one. After all, I only did extracurricular that I liked. If I had to answer I’d say the school frisbee team, which I was unofficially a part of in year 9

What was one class you’ve always looked forward to / dreaded going to?
Looked forward to: Music! This year it’s probably methods because I refuse to say further (yes I am still cut)
Dreaded: Certain parts of chem and bio. Though I wouldn’t say dreaded. I just liked them less.

What was your most embarrassing moment?
Our biology teacher this year is a recent uni graduate with a baby face. At the start of the year, I mistook him for a student on exchange and asked him what year he was in.
To this day, I cannot look at him in the eye.

Do you have any regrets about high school?
Yes. So many. I wish I was more involved with sport and other extracurriculars, as well as leadership. And there are so many people who I’ve hardly talked to throughout the 6 years of high school (especially int’l students) who I wish I got to know more.
I also wish I did physics instead of biology. And doing 7 subjects was really unnecessary lmao.

If you could give one advice to the younger year levels, what would it be?
Do not be afraid to take risks and do things which seems difficult. If you want to study a subject, but don't think you'd be able to handle the workload, just do it anyway. If you want to try out for a leadership position but think your resume isn't as impressive as the other students trying out, don't back out. If your school isn't running a subject you dream of doing, challenge it. You never know how things could work out.

I might update again just before exams just to vent out my feelings and whatnot, or I might see you after November 12th. Either way, we’re approaching the end of the tunnel. To the class of 2019, you’ve all worked so, so hard this year. So hold on - just a bit more - the end is near!

I just had to reply because you just articulated EXACTLY how i felt last year! I worked my butt off in Psych, and when the time came for awards to be announced, I was really sure it was going to be me...and it wasn't. Of course you are 100% right that it doesn't matter, but I was really crushed and my confidence in the subject lowered a little. So, yeah, it's okay to feel disappointed.

Anyway, I ended up duxing-  so, I guess what I'm trying to say is don't let this UNmotivate you and instead let it make you work even harder! Based on your trial scores, I'm sure you will smash it :))

*high five* :P thanks for your encouraging words, definitely made me feel a lot better <3 It's shocking how your teachers didn't see your potential! It's so hard to feel motivated right now, but I guess I just gotta use this as yet another opportunity to prove my teachers wrong.

All the best to you for this coming month!! xx

31 / 10 / 2019  -  Thursday

The beginning of the end.

My exams start in LESS THAN 24 HOURS!

But guess what? Your girl is gonna update this journal instead of doing some last minute study. I might regret this tomorrow.

By now I honestly do not think I can possibly cram in any more content. I've read the same things over and over, done past exams one too many times, and I've seen the VCAA logo more than I'd ever wish to. As nervous as I am, I'm also just glad exams are finally here.

For SWOTVAC, it's been rather relaxed (too much 'VAC' and not enough 'SWOT', if you get what I mean). I went to two 18th's, binged HBO Chernobyl, did extra shifts at work, and visited the NGV on Sunday.

Last night, I had a dream of sitting in my further exam, rushing through each page (and was for some reason using one of those ancient brick-like calculators instead of a CAS) when a voice yelled pens down. I then proceeded to engage in a furious tug-of-war over the exam paper with the supervisor, who bore a strange resemblance to Big Mama from Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, one of my literature texts last year. VCE has taken a toll on my sanity. Looking at my journal title (which I had made on a whim back in January), I feel a twinge of irony.

     ~ Looking back ~

The past few weeks have been an emotional rollercoaster. We had Speech Night, and my house won the house cup for the first time in 12 years! Subject prizes were announced, I sat in the audience and clapped as someone else went up for further. We had our performances, and my band played our hearts out during the final number of Rolling in the Deep.

Then it was muck up celebration day / graduation. My group dressed up as The Matrix characters. When we said our goodbyes, I hid behind those sunglasses, sobbing my eyes out. Everyone was emotional. In our final assembly, we sang the school song and it sounded like a funeral march despite the cheery melody.

In a comedic twist, SWOTVAC soon began, so after all of our tearful farewells, we saw everyone the following day. It felt weird going to school in jeans and runners. My methods teacher, the most wonderful being on this planet, jokingly asked for a uniform pass when she saw me.

This morning I was looking at my AN profile and realised that I made an account exactly one year and one day ago! Scrolling through my early post, it's shocking how times have changed! One of my first posts was me being lowkey terrified of jumping into 3/4 chem without 1/2. One year later, while I'm still hopeless at chem, I'm glad I gave myself that challenge.

     ~ Looking forward ~

For exams, my plan of attack is simple: do the questions in order (because if I don't I WILL miss some), and take everything slow and steady to avoid silly mistakes.

My first exams are tomorrow - bio in the morning, further 1 in the afternoon, then it's further 2, methods 1, methods 2, and chem on 12/11. When freedom finally arrives, I shall head to Ocean Grove with some friends for a few days, followed by a trip to Busan, South Korea, which I am really looking forward to! Oh, and of course find out (dun dun DUNNN) my ATAR.

BTW, I really want to use this space to flex my methods bound ref. It took me a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to make it look ~this~ artistic.
can you even call this a BOUND reference
(OK in all seriousness, I think too much info will only confuse me, so I resorted to 1 page. On the top left I have CAS commands, below is kinematics, my worst topic. On the right are reminders of silly errors I tend to make, and honestly I think this is enough.)

Anyway, I feel like I should probably do the responsible thing and look over my bio notes. I'll see y'all after exams! To the class of 2019, and anyone else doing a 3/4, good luck! I hope we all come out victorious!

Colline xx

OH AND FINAL THING:

As promised in my last update, here's some methods revision questions I've written! If you are doing methods and want some more practice, feel free to download and have a crack! (Also do let me know if I made mistakes). :D

Hi Colline, your journal is such an amazing read! I have no doubt that you will come out victorious this year. It's great that you have the guts to tackle chem without doing 1/2! Chem is no easy cruise and being willing to take on such a challenge is so admirable.

Great methods reference notes! Don't stress, it's a good sign to not have a lot. In my cohort, I don't think anyone who scored over 45 in methods had more than 2-3 pages. I know someone who didn't bring in notes at all - and got a 50.

Good luck with exams! :D

Wow, doing Chem 3/4 without the 1/2? That's amazing (sorry I'm a bit late on this)

I love your minimalist approach towards Methods. Honestly, I don't want to take Bound Notes, I think they're pretty pointless esp if your confident with ur content

Best of luck with the exams!!!

Hey colline,

I've been following your posts all year and finally thought I should stop lurking. I am also a vet hopeful aiming for DVM at Melbourne so it's great to see someone in the same boat.   Your posts have been super enjoyable to read this year and I wish you all the best with exams.

It's so kind of you to share your practice questions! Would you be okay with posting the answers/solutions to them as well? Thanks.

How was biology and further?

Hi Porcupine! Thanks for the encouragement! Chem is definitely no easy cruise haha. And woahhh 50 in methods with no bound ref! That's unbelievable.

I've been reading your journal as well and I'm so happy that you'll be pursuing your dreams instead of something you know you won't be happy with. But damnnn your results are absolutely stellar and I'm sure you'll do great! Good luck with your folios and interviews ^-^

Thank you chopsticks!! And yes I agree, the ideal situation would be where you don't need your bound ref at all because everything is in your head. Love your attitude! Methods 3/4 in year 11 sounds so daunting but you seem to have the mindset to take on the challenge. ;D

By the way I really like your mix of STEM/Humanities subjects! Nice choice on doing lit ;)

Hi Joyn! Nice to see a fellow DVM hopeful! I see you made the smart choice of doing physics! (I have many regrets). Good luck to you too, maybe we'd see each other at Melbourne next year??

Silly me! I completely forgot about answers, thanks so much for the reminder! They're attached to this post.

Thanks for reminding me to update on the exams too!

Biology
I messed up. I did MCQ first, which was okay. But I caught myself making many dumb mistakes so when I got to SA, I slowed down considerably to check after each question. Long story short, I was going at HALF my usual pace and completely forgot to check the clock. With only 5 minutes to go I realised in panic that I had just finished Question 8.

In the end, I didn't have time to even attempt Question 10 or 11, and also left a good chunk of Q9 empty. Don't know how many marks were lost in total, but I am so freaking angry at myself for making such a rookie mistake.

I don't think I have much hope of getting above 30 now, not when I left almost THREE ENTIRE QUESTIONS blank.

(Also evolution and natural selection were my best topics and they weren't on the exam!)

I'm so mad at myself. While bio isn't my strong subject, a 35+ had been highly realistic. My bio teacher said I could get 40. I thought I could get 40. But all it takes is ONE mistake to completely ruin everything. 2 years of bio and in the end everything was in vain, because it's bound to be my 7th subject now.

Further 1
Disappointing too. This year I wanted, more than anything else, to get a 50 in further, which I knew was a realistic goal. But just like bio, all it takes is one mistake to ruin everything. I made an insanely stupid mistake of copying numbers in the wrong order in a matrix. And bye-bye 50.

Overall, I'm pretty disappointed with my performance on my first two exams. But there's still further 2, and hopefully I could redeem myself through methods (though that seems unlikely).

12 / 11 / 2019  -  Tuesday

FREEDOM!

I HAVE FINALLY FINISHED ALL MY EXAMS!!! OH MY GAWD I thought this day would never come!

Before I let myself get carried away I thought I'd better talk about exams.

Biology
This was a tragic episode. I was so worried about making silly mistakes that I took about double the time with SA. In the end I ran out of time and blindly threw away 3 entire questions.
I talked to my teacher afterwards, who said that as my SAC scores were decent, I may still have a chance at a 30+ SS if I did REALLY well on the MCQ and the first half of SA. But I think that is pushing it a little. A 30 is impossible.
I still can't believe I made such a horrible mistake. To make matters worse, I was sitting right under the clock too.

SS Prediction: Doesn't even matter anymore. Below 30 that's for sure.

Further
The first exam went okay. Even though I felt close to tears after the horrific bio exam only a few hours prior, I managed to keep myself together and sit through without letting my emotions get the better of me. I did still make a stupid mistake due to sheer carelessness of not reading the question properly. I made a mistake on exam 2 as well, so I guess the highest SS I can possibly get is 48, 49 if I am lucky. I am pretty upset about that, since further was the only subject I had a chance of getting that 50 in, and I blew it.

SS Prediction: 47 - 49

Methods
I think the Methods Tech-Free exam was the best I have ever done! From comparing my answers to the solutions, I think I got... dare I say it... 40/40?!? It sounds too good to be true!!
I'm not too sure what I got for exam 2, since I cannot remember my MCQ answers. BUT, I know I got all answers from SA right as well!! My only worry is that I could lose marks for having some dodgy working out.

SS Prediction: 43 - 45, maybe even higher?? I don't want to be too hopeful though.

Chemistry
Chem was today, and it went SO MUCH BETTER than I imagined! Of course, as your girl has been barely scraping a pass all year, expectations are low. I thought the exam felt pretty long (maybe as it was my last exam I was just counting down the minutes till freedom) but I'm pretty sure I got over half correct on the exam, which by my standards is insanely good. All in all, I'm glad exams finished on a good note despite the rocky start!

SS Prediction: 33 - 35

Overall ATAR prediction
Worst case scenario: 99.05
Best case scenario: 99.55

Thoughts: Not too sure. First, my predictions could be way off. Second, each ATAR Calculator gives me a different number. Finally, it feels almost too good to be true that even my worst case scenario is above what I need for DVM, especially when I know I stuffed up bio and further. Maybe I had overestimated my exam performance in methods.

I think my biggest disappointment is biology. As I have 7 subjects, one would not count towards my ATAR, and all this time I expected it to be DANCE (scaled 29). But I guess now I've got to face the facts that I probably worked my ass off in bio for nothing. I'm really upset in that aspect.

So now that exams are DONE, I can't wait to get some much needed rest! Next week, a couple of friends and I are going to Ocean Grove to celebrate, but doing ~wholesome~ stuff instead of partying and getting drunk. After that, I want to take on extra shifts at work, and do a HECK TON of driving to get 120 hours so I can get RED P'S when I turn 18 next year! Oh and did I mention I'm going to South Korea during December? I'M SO KEEN.

Good luck to everyone who still has exams left, and if you have finished, I hope you all have a restful and well deserved break! :) :)

Congrats!!!! It must have been the biggest relief ever - and congrars on methods!!!
Thank you rr28!! And best of luck with your journey along the yellow brick road - I'll be sure to follow along! ^-^

I just finished watching Spiderman Far From Home with my brothers and it FEELS SO WEIRD that I've now got all this free time to do stuff!!

Now I've got all these piles of practice exams and worksheets lying around my room - I really want to burn them lol but I think I'll keep them for now so if I'm doing tutoring next year I won't have to start from scratch.

Recently I've been working on writing another Literature guide with fellow AN user hums_student (actually, he's been doing everything so far, but I promised to help once my exams are done). We'll hopefully have it ready in a week or so. And I've been thinking of perhaps writing my own guides for further and methods, but I'm going to wait for results come out first hahaha.

I'm going to Busan for a week - not doing much sightseeing though, but maybe in the future I'll visit some more places! Seoul in particular sounds amazing!!
That sounds awesome! What are you going to be doing if not sightseeing? ;D Oh, and enjoy Ocean Grove and all the other awesome things you can do with your freedom!

WELL DONE ON FINISHING! Sorry to hear that bio didn’t go as planned, but congrats on smashing methods! 40/40 is no easy feat!

27 / 11 / 2019  -  Wednesday

With December just around the corner I thought I'd do one last update before results drop. Since memories of exams, revision, SACs, and just about everything is still somewhat fresh in my mind, here's just some things I've learnt from my subjects, and some tips to future students:

Music Industry / Dance
I'm grouping these two together as they're quite similar. My best advice with any performance subject is to do them early as they are so time consuming. Try not to leave them to year 12, when you've got other 3/4s to worry about. My next best advice is to decide on your repertoire early so that you can start as early as possible. Finally, for dance: devote a lot of time to studying theory. One of my biggest mistakes was focusing too much on my performance exam, to the point where I completely neglected the written component. (Flashbacks to 2018: opening the first page of the exam and thinking to myself "what the heck is *unified composition*??")

Literature
I think the biggest thing to understand about literature is that it is NOT English. Literature isn't just a 'harder/more competitive' version of mainstream English specifically designed for students that always achieve A's and A+'s. It is assessed on a completely different criteria. Once you realise this, literature is quite straightforward. The second advice is to avoid deliberately trying to sound sophisticated. Seriously, I cannot stress this enough. You're not assessed on how well you can swallow a thesaurus.

Further / Methods
First off, do the textbook questions and make sure you have a solid foundation before moving on to harder application-style questions. With maths, the best way to study is just to grind through practice question after practice question, there's no magical shortcut. Also, know your CAS well, but also make sure you can quickly differentiate between questions that are better solved with technology, and those that are better solved by hand. Finally, creating your own questions is a great revision tool in the lead up to the exam.

Biology / Chemistry
Both bio and chem are heavy in content so make sure you know your theory before jumping into any practice questions. I personally found creating chapter summaries of key points to be very helpful. Regarding practice questions, I think my best tip is to do them consistently throughout the year, not just in the days leading up to a SAC or the final exam. In particular you should aim to constantly revise over unit 3 throughout unit 4, because otherwise if you leave it all till SWOTVAC, you will be overwhelmed with content.

General VCE tips
My top tip for VCE is in regards to subject selections - choose subjects you enjoy, but also be mindful of prerequisites. In year 10 I chose literature, further, psychology, dance, drama, and music, but at the suggestion of a teacher, switched from drama to methods after transition (or Head-start as some schools call it). Back then I was reluctant but now I am so grateful for it, as methods is a prerequisite for every single one of my 8 VTAC preferences!

Also, don't be afraid to do subjects that seem difficult or daunting. Do a subject outside of your comfort zone. For me, doing lit 3/4 in year 11 without 1/2 seemed scary, but it worked out! And TBH none of my subjects this year are exactly within my comfort zone (I'm no STEM kid, in case you couldn't tell by my year 10 subject choices) but this year didn't turn out completely catastrophic either (not yet, anyway. We'll know for sure on the 12th of December).

My next piece of advice is unorthodox, but do a 3/4 in year 10. Why? First off, when you're in year 10 you don't have the stress of juggling other VCE subjects. Next, it's good to get a general idea of exactly what VCE involves early on. Finally, if you do well - great! That's one 3/4 out of the way. But if you don't - no stress! You can treat it as a learning opportunity and do 6 other subjects in year 11 and 12.

_____________

The past couple of days have been super productive! Ocean Grove was fantastic. I got about 6 hours on my L's from driving to and from there. I was also tasked with driving my youngest brother to school (with dad in the passenger seat, of course) which really bumped up my logbook. After a year of sitting on 35 minutes, I've gotten almost 50 hours since exams ended! At this rate, I'm well on track to getting P's when I turn 18 in March.

Since getting back from Ocean Grove, I've sorted out all my resources from this year. As I handwrote most of my notes for bio and chem (and ALL for further and methods) there's not much I can sell lol. BUT if anybody is after a heck ton of methods trial exams, I'm selling my entire collection for a $35 donation to my bank account. ;D

Finally, I did a blood test and found out I am allergic to cats... Well that's convenient isn't it? Imagine a vet who is allergic to cats, that's like a sailor who can't swim! I've been around plenty of cats before and have never realised I have an allergy, so it's probably really mild. Hopefully, if I do get into DVM and become a vet, it won't be too much of a problem.

See you all on December 12th! Good luck to everyone :)

Great Tips!

Finally, creating your own questions is a great revision tool in the lead up to the exam.
Never heard of this tip ever, but I will definetly have a crack at it next year.
In particular, you should aim to constantly revise over unit 3 throughout unit 4, because otherwise if you leave it all till SWOTVAC, you will be overwhelmed with content.

This is soo true, I realised it with psychology this year so next year I will def be prepared.

That is so unfortunate but your allergy probably isn't that bad if you've never noticed, and hopefully, when you become a vet it won't affect you much.
Also, that is a really good analogy

Well, see you on December 12th Colline.  :)

13 / 12 / 2019 - Friday

This episode - ATAR Day

I didn't get any ATAR nightmares the night before, mainly because I got not one ounce of sleep. At 11pm a friend and I went to a 24-hr Maccas and sat there eating McNuggets and contemplating life. At 1am, we left and drove around the block while contemplating life some more. At 4am, we went home after my dad got worried. With 3 hours to go, I tried to watch one of Vanessa Hudgens's bad Christmas movies, but couldn't concentrate at all.

At 6:40, I got a text from an unknown number which apparently had my results, but one look at them told me they were a prank (according to said text, I got 49 in bio and 17 in further and methods... If that didn't already give it away, the "final ATAR" of 42.0 definitely did). Only a few minutes later, an email from VASS popped up, but I dismissed it as a prank, again, since in previous years the email always came around 7. I straight up deleted that email without even checking because I was not in the mood for pranks - who knew it was legit? Finally, just before 7am hit, I turned on my camera, having promised my family and friends to do a reaction video. Except the website crashed and for about 20 minutes, while my messages and group chats were all exploding, I sat there nervously refreshing until it finally loaded.

My Results

At the very top was biology. Seeing my GA's, I was reminded of how horrifically I screwed up the exam. I had gotten A/A+/C, with a final score of 33. While I was relieved it was higher than how I went in dance, it was disheartening nonetheless as I was on track for high 30s the entire year until I massacred my exam.

Next up - chemistry. My GA's were A/A+/A+! I was getting C's and B's in my SACs - and how did I get an A+ on the exam?? But the biggest surprise was my study score of 40!! I was mind blown.

Further, on the other hand, was sadly just as expected. I got right on my prediction of 48. So all those urban myths about -1 exam mark is -1 study score must be true.

And finally... Methods was by far the biggest (and best) surprise of them all. While I knew I did well on the exam, I would've never expected that somehow, I did well enough to get 50?? But I did! That's right! Your girl got 50 in methods!! It felt like I was dreaming!

My final ATAR was 99.75!! Absolutely over the moon. Never ever in my wildest dreams could I have imagined getting so high.

Complete results
1. Literature - 50
2. Methods - 50
3. Further - 48
4. VET Music - 48

5. Chem - 40 (10%)
6. Bio - 33 (10%)
7. Dance - 31 (didn't count)

Aggregate: 203.56
ATAR: 99.75

My classmates and friends' results all started trickling in while I was checking my scores. Our school dux had a 99.80 and I cannot think of anyone who deserved the title more than they did. My goal of duxing further was ultimately not achieved - someone got 50. While it did leave me with some regrets, I'm overjoyed for our dux. The further dux and I had known each other since year 7 but we've never really talked until year 12. We were in the same further class and had our free periods together. Both of us were fighting to dux, and both of us KNEW the other was fighting to dux, yet we still became great friends. If I hopped in a time machine, went back to term 1, and told myself that I didn't dux further, my younger self would probably throw a fit. It's funny how times change.

After the initial excitement, lack of sleep finally caught up to me and by noon I had passed out on the couch where I didn't budge till dinner. At night, a bunch of friends and I went to a Karaoke bar at the Crown to celebrate, until we were promptly kicked out after I got ID'd. :P We walked around the city some more, I got drunk for the first time in my life, and our group eventually made our way to Melbourne Uni, where we played a wild game of Sardines (reverse hide-and-seek) until 3am.

This morning, I got up early and made breakfast and lunch for my dad and youngest brother (middle brother is away on school camp), as a small thank-you for all the support they've given me. I'm not the best at cooking, but I tried my best and here's my final product:

So that's my ATAR story. It was a restless night and now I can finally relax. I think I will do one more update for when I get my VTAC offer (which should hopefully be the December round), so I'll see you all then!

Congratulations to the class of 2019, and everyone who did an early 3/4 this year!!

Thanks Snow Leopard!! 🧡
I’m actually putting together a post/guide of the tips and tricks that worked for me in methods this year — it might take a while to complete — but I think some of the most important things are making sure to not waste too much time doing textbook questions and introducing yourself to application problems ASAP. It’s also worth getting SACs and resources from other schools because you don’t want to just get comfortable with how the teachers at your school write questions. Finally, the CAS is SUPER important. I went through the CAS manual and watched a ton of YouTube videos on CAS functions, shortcuts, and guides on self-written programs which applies for the VCE study design. It saves you a lot of really precious time on the exam and during SACs.
Thanks again colline :)
I'll be looking out for that guide!

Thanks Colline! Yeah I'll see you at Melbourne next year! It's so exciting isn't it? Have you had a look at the subjects you'll want to take?

Any advice for tackling UCAT?
Thank you SmartWorker!! 🧡

Regarding the UCAT, frankly I am not the best person to ask. Since med was never my aim to begin with, I didn't actually put too much thought into it - I did the UCAT out of interest - so I didn't actually do any targeted practice. I downloaded the UCAT app and did a lot of questions from there, but other than that, I didn't do any preparation.

I think I was partly able to get the score I did because I simply wasn't stressed about it, so I approached test day with a 'YOLO' attitude and didn't panic during the duration of the test. So my (totally very practical) advice is to have a calm attitude to avoid performing below your potential.

My more practical advice would be to play a bunch of IQ-test-type puzzles or games. They're really fun and I was addicted to them for a good part of my life. Most UCAT questions are built on the same foundations as those games, so if you have experience with those types of brain-puzzles, you'll naturally be more familiar with the sorts of patterns that tend to pop up or the type of distractions they could include to throw you off track.

I'm sorry if both pieces of advice sound kind of weird haha, now reading back on what I wrote, they seem pretty dumb.

Thanks Colline! Yeah I'll see you at Melbourne next year! It's so exciting isn't it? Have you had a look at the subjects you'll want to take?

I was 0.05 off the cutoff for BSci/DVetMed, unfortunately, so now I only have a FFP :(

Oh no!! I'm sorry, that's so unlucky! I'm pretty sure you'll still have opportunities to get a CSP in uni though. Regardless you still did really well!

Yes I am so excited for next year! From looking at the sample course plan we don't seem to have a lot of choices - I'll have to take physics - but I haven't looked too much into electives/breadths yet. Also I've been hearing my friends at Melbourne Uni say this sort of stuff and now it's so weird to hear this vocabulary coming from myself!

Pls don't mind a cheeky plug ;)

-- Colline vs VCAA: The Final Chapter --

19 / 12 / 2019  -  Thursday

Hey friends! With the release of December round VTAC offers yesterday, I am at last released from VCAA's tyrannical reign of terror - my journey through VCE has officially come to an end.

Even though I knew what offer was coming, the wait for my email from VTAC was still somewhat nerve wracking. From as early as 8am, my friends started reporting their offers from ACU, Deakin, La Trobe, etc. My Facebook feed was all of a sudden crowded with updates, all my group chats were going insane, yet no email came for me... until 1:57pm.

I am beyond ecstatic to announce that I have been offered a Commonwealth Supported Place to Bachelor of Science at the University of Melbourne, with guarantee CSP entrance into the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, accelerated pathway!

The journey to this email has been an absolute killer! But I'm also incredibly thankful that it was bumpier than originally planned. From the first week of year 9 to 1:57 yesterday afternoon... It has sure been a long trek!

On AN, I had recorded my journey from the moment I set my eyes on becoming a veterinarian, to the day I received my offer. But the truth is, the journey has been much, much more. From my very first unscored VET in year 9 - when I barely knew what an ATAR was let alone what I wanted to do in the future - to telling my school's career advisor I wanted to become a music therapist in year 10 - to reluctantly swapping out of drama into methods because my head-of-house "forced" me to keep my options open - to checking out animal health courses out of boredom one day and slowly realising music therapy was not for me - until I finally left psychology for chemistry at the end of year 11, which was the moment I knew my goal for uni - not music therapy, but veterinary medicine.

I am seriously looking forward to university!!! Don't know whether I'll do a uni journal on AN, as a BSc isn't exactly the most ~unique~ degree. But I'll see.

This year has been a hell of a year. Was it stressful? Yes. But the stress has been one of the best parts of this year. Controversial opinion, but I don't think stress is a bad thing - it was this stress that pushed me to do my very best, and without it, I couldn't have gotten the results I did. If there is one piece of advice I can give to the next cohort, it's this: You will get stressed in year 12, but don't try to take things easy, hold yourself accountable and be harsh with yourself if you need. Push yourself to go beyond your limits, and you'll be amazed at the results.

With that, it is time to wrap up this thread. Congratulations to my fellow 2019 graduates, and absolute best of luck to the VCE Class of 2020!

Congratulations!!

It's great to hear that you're keen and  - even though there can't have been much doubt you'd be offered a place - it's nice to see your goals becoming more and more your reality :D

Don't know whether I'll do a uni journal on AN, as a BSc isn't exactly the most ~unique~ degree. But I'll see.

No pressure, but imo this isn't a reason to not do a journal - it being very "normal" means there's a lot of people who would be interested in hearing a current students experiences. On the other hand, there are so many possible different unit combinations and ways to engage in uni life that everyone's experiences are unique - even in courses as large as Bachelor of Science at UniMelb.

Best of luck for your science studies! :D

Congratulations! How exciting! You've had so many people follow this VCE journal, so I'm sure you'd have an audience for a uni journal (if you chose to do one). Best of luck with everything next year! I hope you really enjoy your study, it sounds like you have found your passion!
