Probably not a TV show or a movie but Shane Dawson documentaries probably fit here as a TV/Youtube series.

Anyone here watching The Mind of Jake Paul and binge watching all his documentaries? Any thoughts on it?

YESSSSSS

I love Shane’s documentaries and they’re literally the only content on Youtube worth watching. Though, I feel as if the documentaries are a bit biased since Shane knows the person being documented (especially during the Tanacon series- clearly showed favour towards Tana)

The grav3yardgirl and Jefree Star series were A M A Z I N G!!

Although I’m still a bit off about the Jake Paul series. After watching Bunny, Tana and Jefree’s series- I felt sympathy for them as I was able to understand their situation a bit more. Jake Paul isn’t really a person I would like to feel sorry for- since he’s stirred up so much shit and done shady stuff. I really don’t want him to use Logan or his Youtube fame or whatever to excuse his behaviour. He just needs to own up to it.

Also not 100% sure how I feel about part two of the series because Shane’s implying that Jake is a sociopath- he might or might not be. Either way- I believe it’s still a bad assumption and it’s assumptions like these that stigmatise mental health illnesses. It would be wrong to diagnose Jake Paul as a sociopath since the lady in the video does not specialise in this field (correct me if I’m wrong but apparently she’s a marriage counsellor- unless the Youtube comments were wrong).

Besides from that, I’m excited to see how Shane plans on doing for this 8 part series and how he plans on exploring the mind of Jake Paul.

Haven't seen grav3yardgirl but I did watch the Jeffree Star and Tanacon documentaries- the editing is amazing! I love how he's digging around and he's not afraid to ask questions. I was a bit annoyed at how he treated Tana because it was so obvious that she was crying to get Shane's pity, and Shane is too compassionate.

As for The Mind of Jake Paul, I feel bad for him because as soon as he revealed what he's upcoming project was gonna be on Jake Paul, he received so much backlash that people were like 'if you do this I will unsub.' I mean, Shane Dawson has the power to make us feel bad for people (i.e. Jeffree Star, Tana) but maybe he could have the power to destroy and expose Youtubers?

I wasn't a huge fan of Part 2 though. It was very dramatised and the symptoms they listed was very generic. It would've been better if they also emphasised on not diagnosing other people or themselves when going through the symptoms because that's the danger of researching about mental health illnesses- self-diagnosing is very common and is quite dangerous since we don't know the nuances in these symptoms.

And yeah, you (and the Youtube comments) are right. When you go to Kati Morton's website, in her about section, it says: "Kati Morton is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist practicing in Santa Monica, California." So yeah, not the best person to speak to.

I am happy though that Shane said on Twitter that he will be re-filming part 3 to address the criticisms of part 2. Cannot wait for the next parts though! (pretty sure he's uploading tomorrow since he said the uploading schedule is Mon/Wed/Fri, and Monday in America is Tuesday for us).

Omg yess!! All credits to Andrew for the fantastic editing. I do agree with what you said about Tana. The intention to create a convention where everyone was equal was there- but the fact it was created as part of a revenge just really jinxed the entire plan. Although, I do remember times where I felt bad for Tana. I just don't know how I will be able to see Jake attempt to apologise for his mistakes.

It's definitely possible that he has the power the destroy and expose Jake Paul. I mean it does already help that most of the shit Jake has done has been reported in the news- so if Shane's intention was to ultimately destroy and expose Jake, this will further aggravate the hate towards Jake.

Definitely agree! It would've been better if Shane talked to different psychiatrist who were actually qualified in that particular field relating to sociopaths or personality disorders.

Now that you made this a thread Olivia, I was thinking that we could do a lil review everytime a new episode came out (or every two eps)? Would love to discuss it with you (and other people can definitely join in!) as the series progresses.

Omg yes! I think it would be a great idea to review/discuss these episodes- obviously Shane and Andrew has put in so much effort into these documentaries so we could use it as a starting point to talk about the issues they raised (e.g. mental health). (Plus, it's a great way for me to procrastinate lmao)

Soo, part three ‘The Family of Jake Paul’ was recently uploaded.

Will make sure to give it a watch as soon as I get home from uni today and discuss it on this thread. Anyone, please feel free to share your thoughts!

So 'The Family of Jake Paul' came out this morning and I have a couple of thoughts- had to watch it twice to consolidate my thoughts lmao.

I'm glad Shane addressed the Part 2 criticism at the beginning and the comments section- a lot of people have been self-diagnosing or diagnosing other people because of the video and he did say in the subtitles not to do so. I'm also glad that he's given a few disclaimers as well. At the same time, I feel bad for Shane because he wants to try and satisfy everyone. Before he uploaded The Mind of Jake Paul, he got hate for doing a video with Jake Paul. Now the series is out, he's hated for his editing style. It's really evident in the way he edited Part 3 because he's kinda pulled back from the whole 'scary' stuff- and it's probably because he's done a lot of conspiracy videos so that's probably where he/Andrew got their editing style from.

Anyway, I feel like the series is slowly straying into Logan Paul rather than Jake Paul. Shane tends to be applying sociopathic traits to Logan than Jake and I think a lot of people in the Youtube comments have mentioned that. And I kinda see that. A lot of people view Logan as more 'likeable' (though I kinda view Logan and Jake as equally hate-able). I find it interesting that Logan said that he envies Jake's emotional side and admits he falls on the sociopathy spectrum. But it goes back to the question of whether he's manipulating the audience because he knows he does a lot of crap just to get views. It's kinda sad how Youtube has become a platform to get views.

I found today's episode fascinating because of Shane's research into the family. I kinda feel bad for the mum because it's clear that she tries to do a lot of things to try and be as involved as she can in her sons' lives and is trying to make up for the time she and her husband got divorced. But that doesn't excuse her from using her sons as clickbait for her videos- but then again, it's my first impression and we haven't even started including Jake Paul and his family in the series yet, everything is speculation. Their dad on the other hand, is very unsettling. There are a lot of rumours that he did a sex tape with a 17 year old (unsure how accurate the Youtube comments section is) and that video where supposedly he made out with an "underaged" girl was very unsettling, even though Shane clarified that she's not underaged. Still, it's very uncomfortable that their dad has no shame in casually making out with girls half his age. The fact that he used to be in the army is also kinda unsettling- I would assume that after being in the army, you'd be a lot more disciplined and athletic but not to the extent of Greg Paul. I've spoken to people from the RAAF base and they're very approachable, not harsh and competitive like Greg Paul. And a lot of people in the comments section were like "I'm/ My relative's from the army and we're not like Greg Paul."

Because of all this family research, I couldn't help but think about the nature vs nurture debate we covered in Society & Culture last year and whether your upbringing influences your personality more than genetics, vice versa. Clearly with the Paul family, Greg's army/football coach background has severely influenced Logan and Jake to be competitive. Competition can be healthy in the sense that you're more encouraged to improve your content but in their case, it's gotten extremely unhealthy. They're not trying to improve the quality of their videos- they're just competing on who can do the most excessive video. And Jake did mention in his Draw My Life video that this competition began during their childhood since their dad pushed them to see who can be the best.

From what I can see so far, I'd say Logan tends to show more sociopathic tendencies than Jake (even though Jake also show some traits) probably because he's older and more exposed to his dad's style of raising. However, I think Jake has become a lot more hated and excessive (though he didn't show a dead body) because he feels like his brother gets more views, subscribers and also the love and validation from their parents. It's clear his parents favour Logan (they wear Logan's merch for god sakes) and Jake just happens to live in the shadow of Logan.

Anyway, can't wait for Thursday when Part 4 will be uploaded.

What about you guys? Any thoughts on the new episode?

Just started watching the Jake Paul "series" and finished the first video this morning. I haven't previously watched any of these style of videos. Although I am aware of Jake Paul's youtube channel and some of the stuff that has allegedly occurred including Alissa Violet. Not too sure what to make of the first video, I guess this video is just there to set the stage for the whole documentary but definitely looks interesting.

One thing I have to say- definitely like how Shane changed the tone of the documentary from part three onwards...

Definitely! This is just me speculating but I think now Shane has a clear direction on where the documentary will go.

Before, I think he was trying to diagnose Jake whether he's a sociopath or not- and I thought so to because he started questioning whether Youtubers have some sort of personality disorder but I think  in combination with the criticism for Part 2 and his research into the Paul family, he realised that the series is more like 'Why does Jake Paul do ___' rather than 'Is Jake Paul a sociopath?'

Anyways, Part 4 is out today and I think this was a turning point for me in understanding where this series was gonna go. I gotta respect Nick for establishing boundaries and respecting the confidentiality between himself and Jake because he didn't want to reveal all the Team 10 stuff for publicity. And I think interviewing Nick was a good idea because not only was Shane able to get someone else's perspective but also clarify some Team 10 misunderstandings. It's kinda reassuring that Nick confirmed that a lot of the pranks were fake, but that doesn't excuse Jake for doing pranks and disturbing everyone. It's also clear that they're doing a lot of extreme stuff for views and also because they're trying to "beat" Logan Paul in terms of views and subscribers- which I think is ridiculous, but at the same time, I think it's because of Greg Paul always talking about competition between the two brothers.

Also, can I just say, that mother in the snippet where are the fans were lining up outside of Team 10's house and she's like "Be gentle, they made you famous and they gave you pay-checks" really annoyed the crap out of me. Like, I don't like the Paul family or Team 10 but that made me really annoyed. No one would ever consider taking their kids outside a celebrity's home and think they have the right to trespass just because "they made you famous." And then there was another girl that was like in the background "unsub." Props to Nick for being patient and not responding to them because I would've flipped out.

Another thing I wanted to address was what Jake said about his target audience: 8-16 year olds? Their content is waayyy too adult for kids. Sure, kids these days are a lot more exposed to these kinds of stuff and tend to act older than their age but he needs to get a reality check because if 8 year olds are gonna think it's okay for you to destroy someone's room or spit in someone's face (even though all the pranks are fake) then I've lost hope in humanity.

I was a bit uncomfortable at the end when Shane suggested sneaking in Kati into the Team 10 house to observe him without Jake knowing. Obviously, Jake most likely would've given the ok to Shane but it seems like almost breaching Jake's trust. (And I couldn't help but think about Society & Culture where part of ethical research is transparency between the researcher and the "test subject").

Anyway, can't wait for Saturday for Part 5!

Omg the long-awaited Part 5 has arrived today! I was a bit sad I didn't see an upload on Friday but when I checked twitter, Shane said that they underestimated the amount of footage they had to go through. Kinda sad, but understandable because today's episode was so interesting!

I really feel bad for Shane, especially with the backlash he keeps getting. It keeps getting worse. I got pissed off in the previous part because there was this one guy that was like 'Well the series is really boring to me... idk how to explain' and then today's episode there was a number of Youtubers that either keep bringing up the sociopath stuff or they said 'How can you do a series on Jake Paul but he doesn't show up until Part 5?' I don't know if these Youtubers really understand how movie plots or the structure of an entertaining series goes- which is surprising because these Youtubers are supposed to know- but they should understand that you need to set the stage and introduce everything before hitting the climax. If you start straight away with Jake Paul, then you're gonna lose the interest of the public by the time you reach the end of the series.

In the context of these documentaries, Shane needs to do his research before jumping straight in. You can't just assume that one is a sociopath without looking up the traits or talking to a therapist. Although I kinda disagree with Shane's choice of consulting Kati- considering how she admitted in today's episode that she specialises in eating disorders and marriage counselling- I still think the sentiment is there. Shane visited a licensed therapist and it was better than him googling these traits and diagnosing him, because that would be unethical. Even researching the family and interviewing Nick Crompton was a good idea because Shane needs the context and the other side of the story before allowing him to have a full understanding of Jake's behaviour.

If the last episode didn't teach anyone, I think Shane is emphasising more on the importance of trying to understand why Jake does all these dumb stuff. To question 'why' rather than accept that his dumb actions are who he is and completely disregard him. I'll admit, Part 5 changed my perspective on Jake a bit. When he was alone with Shane and Kati, or even with Erika, he actually opened up and talked about his childhood, but when he's with his friends, he puts up a tough exterior. I think we really saw that in the part when Shane was like to Jake before entering the vehicle 'Do you trust me' and Jake sounded like he was gonna say something nice but then he changed after he met eye contact with the camera and said 'Well yeah, you're gonna be filming everything.' I think Shane is doing a good job of showing the other side of Jake, and he's definitely the perfect guy to approach people like Jake. He has a calming presence and always tries to see the good in others or tries to connect with them, and that clearly helped Jake open up.

I'm really looking forward to next episode because when the camera was on Alissa and panned to Shane, I knew crap is gonna hit the fan. What do you guys think?

Ok, Part 6 came out on Friday, and I have a lot of thoughts.

I have no clue how to feel about Jake Paul. I think it's more like pity- I pity him because I realised that he's pressured to make sure his vlogs are "successful" so everyone in Team 10 can earn something (from brand deals, tours or AdSense). That doesn't mean I would run to his channel and watch his videos. I wish Shane could probe and ask questions- Alissa Violet, Greg Paul, Martinez twins. Maybe it's coming in Part 7.

I also liked how Part 6 showed a different side of Jake Paul. He's a lot more calm and he's not as crazy as he looks like in his vlogs. Like, he actually care for Erika. And Erika also cares about Jake. I found their "Jerika" song very cringey but when Andrew filmed those subtle moments between Erika and Jake, it actually show that Jake genuinely cares for her and they debunked that rumour that their relationship os fake. I was kinda scared that Erika would get pissed when Shane revealed that Kati isn't a producer but a therapist because Nick didn't recommend a 'hidden camera' with a therapist. At this point, I don't want Shane to go back to the sociopath route and actually ask Jake about all his scandals.

Even though Jake did answer all of Shane's questions, there were also parts where I'm not sure how to feel. Like when they talked about the assault, I find it a bit unclear whether they think that Faze Banks actually assaulted Erika's assistant. Personally, I think that Erika's assistant did get assaulted, but not by Faze Banks. I think when they brought out Faze Banks and included it in the middle of a vlog, it got ridiculous and it made the situation less believable. Like, considering how a lot of people can see the tension between Alissa Violet and Jake, the fact that they blamed it on Faze Banks just made it worse. I wanted to see what would've happened if Faze Banks proceeded to sue Jake Paul because Jake's accusation would be considered as slander and you could sue for defamation.

Anyway, Shane hasn't given us a day as to when Part 7 will be up but I am excited what Alissa Violet has to say. I kinda wish Shane would also interview other ex Team 10 members. Chance Sutton and Tessa Brooks have spoken out on Twitter debunking what Jake has claimed. When Jake claimed that his second channel was 'stolen', Chance tweeted something along the lines of asking Anthony for the channel and they were cool with it- clearly I'm paraphrasing so I may be misquoting. And Tessa Brooks, although she didn't directly clear up anything, she did tweet saying "It's getting more difficult to stay quiet"- again, paraphrased. The Martinez twins haven't tweeted out anything- which is surprising because Nick debunked everything they said, but it would be interesting to hear their response.

EDIT: I just had an afterthought. Shane's viewers. I still feel really bad for Shane because he's constantly getting backlash. They're saying "I want tea. You promised tea." But shouldn't they know that Shane's known for helping people? I mean, he's helped grav3yardgirl, Jeffree Star, and even helped Tana after the disastrous Tanacon. Shouldn't they know that Shane is curious about people's personalities and tries to help them? So wouldn't that be the case for Jake Paul? I just think they're not giving the series a chance.

Holy smokes The Mind of Jake Paul is over and boyyy I'm a mess.

I'll start with Part 7. I didn't review it yet because I had to prepare for Paper 1 on Wednesday (still watched it though lmao). It was interesting to hear Alissa's side of things. There were a lot of people in the comments section that were like 'Oh it looks like she's lying etc' but personally, I think it takes a lot of guts to admit you were also at fault, especially in a toxic relationship. I'm glad she admitted that she screwed up when she went behind Jake and hooked up with Logan. I do understand why she got frustrated. I think she was trying to make it official with Jake for a really long time but she was confused with their relationship because they were in an 'on and off' relationship. On top of that, she would get pissed whenever Jake would leave her out of the business stuff or pranks. I am a bit confused with the word 'abuse.' Before the interview, based on the snippets, Faze Banks and Alissa kept saying that Jake physically abused Alissa. Now, she said that he didn't physically abuse her but it was more of emotional abuse. I'm a bit unsure with why the story slightly changed.

Anyway, I think Alissa also revealed the a lot on Logan as well. I know Shane didn't want the series to be about Logan because he's not there to defend himself (in the wise words of Shane Dawson) but it kinda reinforced my belief that Logan is a lot more... over the top than Jake. Like, I'm shocked he didn't consider it to be strange to sleep with Alissa (even though you could see that they were in an on and off relationship). Logan also rubbed me the wrong way when Alissa talked about being in Logan's music video and how he didn't really do much when Greg Paul called Alissa a whore or when she was worried about being in Logan's music video. When Alissa said that Logan said it was too late to back out and he already got confirmation from her that she was excited to be in the video, that's... hmm. No clue what to say. I don't know the full details of the contract when Alissa got signed with Maverick Media (although she said Logan let her off), I'm not sure if 'her being excited to be in the video' on camera is considered a legitimate contract. My personal opinion on this is if there was an actual contract for the music video, then yeah Alissa couldn't do much because it's a legally binding agreement. But if it was a verbal contract, it's easier to argue against it because conversations can be easily misconstrued and there aren't any terms and conditions involved.

Another thing I was a bit iffy with was the contract. She mentioned how the contract she signed was to go for 5 years. That's a pretty long time. I think 5 years is waayyy too long. I know Kpop groups whose contracts last for 3 years. And these are Kpop groups who sign with a legitimate company with a board of officials, and PR and all that legal stuff- in summary, they sign with a company that has enough money to provide them makeovers and promotions and brand deals and Kpop groups resign every 3 years (this isn't for all entertainment companies. I know JYP entertainment has their artists resigning every 3 years). Maybe it's because Korea has slightly different laws but again, 5 years is too much for a rookie company.

Anyway, apart from a lot of heavy stuff that Alissa and Shane talked about, I found Shane's reaction to the clout house amusing. The house actually looks the same house as the place where they interviewed Nick Crompton. Personally, although the house looks nice but only to explore, not really live in. It's very overwhelming to look at and I have no clue how the clout gang lives there.

I also think Keemstar made a really good point on the new generation of Youtube creators. We're at a point now that we reward people who flaunt their wealth and act dumb in public. The fact that a lot of Youtube content is like this (e.g. Jake/Logan Paul, RiceGum, Lil Tay) is kinda depressing actually.

So, the final part has arrived today. And boy it was so long. There was so much that they talked about that it's very overwhelming.

One thing I do wanna say is that it seems like the Alissa situation has really messed up everything- Jake's relations with his brother, the rest of the family. And I like how Shane was able to sit there and go through a list of things he wanted to talk about, including things like the Alissa situation and other things I didn't know about like child manipulation and Jake's music video about teachers. I'm glad Shane wasn't afraid to criticise Jake in the face and say "In my opinion, you look like _____." To me, it seems like Jake's childhood really screwed him up. Not just because of the divorce but because of Greg Paul and how he kinda split up the brothers in the beginning. Like, Greg would always try and talk about competition and everything and that became a toxic household because you can see how Logan and Jake are always trying to one-up each other. And I am glad Shane brought up Greg's role in Team 10 because I don't think it's wise for him to work with a dad who's told him all his life to be competitive.

Back to the Alissa situation, to be honest, I have no idea what to say about it. I might have to watch it again because I couldn't process what actually happened. There was so many things going on. I need someone to draw me a timeline because I'm lost with the chronology of the events. What I was surprised about was when Jake said that he gave Alissa 30 days to leave because he couldn't stand living with her but she didn't leave. I found it interesting because when I initially saw Alissa's video about being kicked out by Jake, I thought that he was being harsh. But hearing Jake's side of the story really cleared up a lot. I would like to see Alissa and Jake talk it out with Shane being the mediator (kinda like with the Tanacon series where Tana and Michael sat there and talked/yelled to each other about all the beef they had about each other) but I don't think Alissa would be able to handle it well considering how she kinda retreated for a bit after Jake claimed that Alissa cheated on him (which btw, I don't think it's fair for either one of them to claim one was cheating on the other because they never made the relationship official). I kinda wished Shane asked Jake about the whole abuse thing (i.e. Alissa being dragged down the stairs), but Jake did admit that he was seeing other girls while being 'in a relationship' with Alissa.

I am also glad that Shane brought up the Martinez twins situation. When Nick said that he was confused about their video about Team 10, I wanted to hear Jake's or the Martinez twins' perspective- at least one of them. I do want to see what the Martinez twins have to say about what Jake said about them because he and Nick completely debunked what they said. The racist terms Jake cleared up, but the other things like the pranks they both said was fake. To be honest, when Jake talked about meeting the Martinez twins and helping them get brand deals, it kinda shows that not only is Jake pressured by his family to try and one-up Logan but he's also being depended on by other people.

I think those were the main points I learnt from this whole series. I still do wanna know why Jake's mum uses her sons for clickbait in her videos but at this point I'm so exhausted by all the drama I only vaguely remember what they said about the drama because there's so much to cover. To me it looks like Jake is probably starting a new chapter because the Team 10 Instagram deleted all the previous posts and hinted a new team- no clue what that means. There may still be stones unturned but I am glad a lot of the drama is out there. Shane and Andrew better be getting some sleep and a vacation after this because Shane looked like a mess in his snap after editing for 30 hours. I want Shane to go back to his conspiracy videos and vacation videos with the squad.

Side note: is it just me or does anyone cringe when they hear Shane or anything other Youtubers pronounce mukbang as 'mook- bang' or 'mook-bahng' instead of the proper way of saying it: 'meok- bahng.' Just a random thought.

Possibly unrelated to the reviews that I've been doing for Shane's series but I'm so happy that Shane and Andrew are nominated for the Streamy's in Editing, Creator of the Year, Documentary and Collaboration! Even though he's nominated for The Truth About Tanacon and The Mind of Jake Paul would've also been a great series, it's great to see their work being recognised and appreciated :) So excited for Tuesday to see if he won any!
