WEEKEND Q+A #7: KATIE RINOS
SATURDAY 21ST: 2PM - 5PM

A LITTLE ABOUT KATIE

Hey!! I’m Caitlin, but my nickname and forum username is Katie. I love listening to music, Harry Potter, reading and history.  I’m a leader of year 3 girls at my local Girls Brigade. I’ve played the clarinet since year 3 (11 years!) and am involved in my communities’ band and the UNSW wind symphony.

I completed my HSC last year studying an amazing 13 units, which included: Music 1, Ancient, Extension History, Legal, Hospitality, General Maths and Advanced English. I am currently studying a Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Education at UNSW!  :D

Feel free to ask me anything at all and I’ll try my best to give a really helpful answer! Whether it’s how I studied for one of my subjects? What I did for my music/extension history major works? Why I did 13 units? What the audition process for UNSW/the conservatorium is actually like? What’s it’s like studying both music and education at uni? What’s my favourite songs? Or Hogwarts house/patronus?

Looking forward to your questions!!   ;D

HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?

Hi, Katie! Great to see you.
First and foremost, what’s your favourite Harry Potter book/movie? Why? (And yes what’s your house and patronus)
Do you enjoy music theory? What’s something interesting you’ve learned?
What age group would you love to teach? Why?
Do you prefer the city or the country? Justify.
Do you like chocolate? If not, why not? If so, what’s your favourite brand/flavour and why?

I’m a keen bean for the answers! Thanks :))

Hi Katie :)
I was wondering if you had any tips with memorising quotes for English as efficiently as possible? Also how much time were you putting into studying for trials a day? And how did you go about studying for the two option essays for Legal Studies (I'm doing consumers and world order)

Hey Rui,
I hate scales so much. It's not really the scales but more having to memorise them for exams because I always found it really hard to memorise all of them. There's so many of them that I need to know for grade 8 as well (around 55-major, minor, blues, chromatic, scales in 3rds, arpeggios, and broken chords) and I haven't really memorised that many yet :(.

Hi, Katie! Great to see you.

Hey Poet,
1. I'm super indecisive, I love all of the books and movies. I actually don't think I can tell you which ones my favourite because I loved them all. I started reading Harry Potter when I was in year 2, and at the moment I'm reading the Order of the phoenix.

I'm in Ravenclaw. The first time I tried the Patronus test on Pottermore it was a wild pig and it was really disappointed. I tried again at the start of the year and I got a maple grey mare which is a lot cooler.  :D

2. I found the music theory last sem a bit boring but mainly really hard because I was behind in music theory and didn't really understand any of the piano chords. The way it was taught was a bit boring as it was just the lecturer writing chords on the whiteboard and us having to follow. Last semester we mainly looked at classical (Mozart period) pieces but I think we might be doing a bit more popular music this coming sem which should be interesting. Almost every week I was learning something new, so I ended up learning and improving heaps. I learnt a lot more piano stuff, such as triads and dominant 7th chords, their inversions and how to notate them. I also learnt non-harmonic tones, cadences and modulations.

3. I'm not too sure what age group I'd like to teach. I did my work experience with primary kids and I was able to run a kindy and year 1 class in singing and simple music classes and it was really fun. My year 3 girls at Girls Brigade are also really good to lead. My degree is high school, I'm not really too sure. I think I'd like to try most different age groups though.

4. Probably a bit of both. I live around an hour from the Sydney city area and the trains and travel and huge amount of people really annoy me. But then, i haven't really been around the country a lot (most of the holidays I've been on are more coastal such as Gold Coast/Coffs Harbour).

5. Yes, I really like chocolate. We went to San Churros yesterday and their churro snack packs are really good! I used to really love Lindt chocolate, and their milkshakes at their cafe. I like most chocolate brands.

Thanks for the questions!!  ;D

Do you have any suggestions for forcing yourself to get work done? They say 'The hardest part about studying is starting,' but how would you get yourself to start working?  ???

1. Do you prefer classical piano pieces or jazzy piano pieces? Why?

2. If you had to specialise in an area of music, would it be the blues or classical music? Why?

Who would win? A NSW-sized Victoria, or a Victoria-sized NSW? :))
NSW is a lot bigger then Victoria (571,815km larger area according to google), and we're also the superior state so I'd say a NSW-sized Victoria. I think...

How does one prepare for History Extension Trials? (apart from past papers)
What did you do for your Major Work?
What made you decide to learn how to play the clarinet?
How did you manage 13 units? (lmao I didn't last)
1. I did flash cards for my historians, key terms and my case study. I mainly did quizlets because I was able to test myself with it. Make sure that you know some of the historians and the key debates well. I used the debate thread a lot because I found it really fun and not as boring as studying. I also did a lot of essay plans and working on pulling concepts and ideas from the source (because I was really scared I wouldn't be able to understand a source in trials/HSC).

2. For my major, I knew I wanted to do something based on the Holocaust but it took me a while to come up with an actual question that I was happy with. My question ended up being: Assess the Goldhagen v. Browning debate, focussing on why the German people of police battalion 101 were involved in the murder of the Jewish people. The two historian's had really conflicting interpretations on why the members of police battalion 101, were involved in the Holocaust and I looked at their context and methodology and how this led to their interpretation. Goldhagen was really controversial as well as he believed that all German people would have murdered Jews due to a form of unique Eliminist anti-semitism through their culture. HIs book title was "Hitler's willing executioners".  Browning, believed it was a mix of adherence to the authority figures and an advanced form of group mentalities/peer pressure. (I could actually talk about my major for ages!!  ;D)

3. I started clarinet in year 3, mainly through my primary school band. Once you were in year 3, you were able to start in the band, and I told my parent's that I wanted to play an instrument. The clarinet was the only instrument I could make a noise out of at the time.

4. Honestly, I didn't manage it amazingly all of the time. I had 9 exams for trials so that was pretty stressful, and at some points I did prioritise some subjects over others (mainly because in Hospitality and maths, I found the content easy to grasp). I also did extracurriculars (clarinet lessons, band, Girls Brigade, musical) so I worked all of my study/homework around that. I really liked all of my subjects (except English) so studying for them didn't feel too bad. I would make weekly to do lists and have stuff under each of my subjects and then work on trying to highlight/cross off each thing and try to be really organised. When I did have free time, (such as bing able to practise my pieces during music, or studying during sport) I'd try to make it productive and not get too distracted by other people around me. I also took heaps of time off work during the exam periods so I'd have weekends to study/do assignments and work.

Thanks for your questions  ;D

Katie, what advice would you give current high school students who really aren't sure what they want to do after Year 12?
