Drop Chem?

Hello
I'm currently doing Units 1&2: Chemistry; Physics; Methods; Specialists; English Language and Units 3&4 Accounting
My average score in Chemistry on SACs is 92% but I don't desire a career in medicine (more so commerce or engineering) so I would prefer to enjoy myself in Systems Engineering.

Should I continue with Chemistry or change Chemistry to Systems Engineering mid-semester?
Just needs some additional confidence in my decision to change. Thanks.
Class of 2020
2020: English 3/4, Methods 3/4, Specialists 3/4, Physics 3/4, Systems Engineering 3/4
2019: Accounting 3/4
The harder you try, the more likely you'll succeed.

I really don't know about the difficulty of systems engineering but I have had the experience of dropping 1/2 subjects and in turn doing 3/4 subjects. e.g. I dropped Japanese 1/2 as I sucked at it and did Further Maths 3/4 (without 1/2). Obviously Further Maths is easier than Systems Engineering but if I did Japanese 3/4 I believed I would get around a high 20s raw score (and negatively impact my atar score) and pretty much at the end of yr 11 I had given up on the subject. I wasn't planning to use my Japanese knowledge outside of school anyway.

So if you 100% believe you don't want to do Chemistry 3/4- then i suggest you drop it and do a subject that will most likely help you more in university. I would suggest that you probably talk to your school counselor before immediately deciding to drop Chemistry- you might regret it later on. Dropping the subject mid semester is probably better as it will help you for Systems engineering 3/4.

Good luck.

My 3 criteria for any subject change are:
1. Do you enjoy the subject?
2. Is it a prerequisite for your intended course? (In your case, I’d double check whether Chem is a prereq for any engineering courses. In most cases though, either Chem or Physics usually covers the prerequisite.)
3. (And this is only used as a tiebreaker) Are you good at it?

The last one only applies if you’re really stuck on the first two questions, so I doubt you’d need to use that to decide.

In your situation, I’d check the courses you’re interested in and confirm if Chem is needed. If you’re not enjoying it and it’s not a prerequisite, then I’d be leaning towards changing to System Engineering. I’d also check out the study design to see if you’d like Systems Engineering more before you come to your final decision.

Hope that helps! :)
