Post by: Snow Leopard on July 14, 2019, 01:08:07 pm
Snow Leopard's Sleep Journal

Aims: slowly improve sleeping patterns and try to get 8-9 hours of sleep a day!

Good luck! Also, so lucky that you only have to wake up just after 7:00 for school. Generally, I leave before 7:00 to study or else leave at 7:45, so I'm up at 6:45.

Thank you, good luck for your thread about getting healthy and feeling better in Semester 2 as well!

15/07/2019 - Monday
Yesterday, I was in bed by 1:30 am when I was meant to be in bed by 11:00 am. But I didn't really feel tired as I also sleep late on Saturday, so yeah not the best start. Hopefully today will be better.

On a more positive note I woke up at 7:00 am but didn't get up until 7:20 am.

Oof. I was in bed by 10 last night but still struggled to wake up in time for school. I don't know how you do it. Good luck getting lots of rest tonight.

Good to see that you're increasing your sleep each night, at quite the pace as well! Keep it up and you'll be right on track for your goal :).

22/07/2019 - Monday
I went to bed at 2:50
Spoiler
because I had to study for a Maths test which I left the revision at the last minute.  Dumb decision. The worst thing is I didn't even finish the test. The teacher was late, like the 2nd bell had gone by the time they came. This was especially annoying for this test because we had to draw graphs which is time-consuming.

Overall, Maths this year hasn't been great. Literally, the only test that I did well in was when the teacher gave us a week of revision (like all lessons in class to revise for that whole week prior to that test). I know I can do better but I just need to work harder and not leave things to the last minute. Any tips?

I woke up at 7:30.

:o This is pretty much the exact same time I slept and woke up today.  :o Except I wasn't really studying for anything (though I had a lot to do).
And I'm probably not the most qualified to give you maths study tips, but I believe consistent practice and revision is absolutely key! (I know, nothing really exciting or 'out there', but it's the only way that I know of, sorry).

Oh yeah, and get some sleep! I know I'll be getting some more tonight.

By the way, I think this is a simple, yet briliant idea! Sleep deprivation is all too common in the Western world, and being sleep deprived for long periods isn't ideal in the slightest (School ain't easy). Yet we somehow find ways to convince ourselves that 12:00am is "early". Do you have problems with sleep/wake consistency? Like, I kind of struggle sleeping well two nights in a row.

One more thing, do you remove all technology from your bedroom at least 30-45 minutes before you go to bed? My bedroom should be for sleeping only, nothing much else.

Yeah I agree with that. In terms of struggling to sleep well two nights in a row, I feel like I'll roll around in my bed for a while before actually falling asleep.

One more thing, do you remove all technology from your bedroom at least 30-45 minutes before you go to bed? My bedroom should be for sleeping only, nothing much else.
Ha ha, your funny. Yeah, I turn of my technology like 10 mins before going to bed. I should build on that habit. ::)

I’ve also been keeping tabs with my sleeping schedule - have got it down to a habit of getting into bed at 9:30, falling asleep at around 10:30 and getting up at 6am.

For me, I get into bed an hour earlier so I can relax and unwind from all the stress that is university. I turn off my data and wifi on my phone at around 10 and I just force myself to not turn data or wifi back on until at least when I wake up again. It’s worked quite well so far!

Hopefully this helps with your sleeping schedule!

I'll try to incorporate it but I feel like that'll be hard especially during school days.  ::)

Interesting.... ::)
I guess it's improving, just slowly. Though making this journal has helped since it helps to keep my goals in mind.

A book recommend you read is Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams by Matthew Walker.

I think you'll find some good actionable advice to achieving your goal as well as motivation as well.

Quiet. The good thing is that once your head hits the pillow you're falling asleep.

Heyoo! I’ve been reading through your journal and I have to say wowowowow. It’s so amazing to see a fellow year 11 (next year, but same thing) trying so hard to achieve their goals!!
Also, I don’t if you mentioned this already but what LOTEs are you currently doing?
Keep up with the good work and hope you’ll be able to do well on your studies and other things. Also, good luck with commencement.. I feel your pain haha  ;)

Thanks, I'm glad the large amount of red (incomplete tasks) in my journal didn't scare you!

Hey, Snow Leopard!  ;D
How are you going with your goals?
Quite badly :-[

Bump! How are you finding that your sleep pattern is changing with school holidays?
Well, I've been waking up at a later time and going to bed at a later time as well. What's really concerning is that I'm actually oversleeping a lot, which is quite bad.

9/12/2019 - 21/12/2019
How I've gone so far with General Goals for the Holidays:
- Wake up at  9:00 am and go to bed at 10:00 pm to read until 11:30 I've been going to bed at 1-2am and waking up at 12:30am
- Drink around 4 bottles of water (around 600ml each)  Yep
- Do at least 30 mins or more of Physical Activity I've only been exercising sporadically really
- Reduce lollies and sugary food  Nope

In terms of Language logs, I've still done nothing for both languages and haven't even touched my holiday HW. I'm planning on being more productive from tomorrow/today onwards though.

Specific Goals for 21/12/2019:
- Go to bed/like actually sleep after posting this
- Organise my desk (there's too much stuff on it)
- Type up the list of Holiday HW that I have to get done
- 1 hour of Vocabulary for LOTE 3/4 (this includes writing the vocab list)
- 1 hour of Vocabulary for LOTE 1/2 (this includes writing the vocab list)
- Wrap (I can't remember the actual name of it) my textbooks
- Read up to pg250 of Lit book
- Hopefully buy the last of the Christmas presents and wrap them all up!

I'll be back at 9:30 pm tomorrow at the latest to update y'all on how I went and hopefully I don't go AWOL on you guys again ;D

Love this organisation Snow! This is something I could never imagine doing, you're doing an exceptional job at preparing. Just make sure not to burn yourself out over these summer holidays! You'll have plenty of time to order your life from week one of term, so maybe take a few days off in between now and the last week of holidays before getting a strong groove before Term begins  :)

Haven't updated for a while now so I'll start off with:
Realisations about Yr 11
Overall, I came into Yr 11 thinking that it would be like Yr 9 and 10.
The truth is that in Yr 9 and 10, you can cram and if you know how to do it properly, then cramming works. The only downside is obviously you don't retain as much for exams and also that it's quite stressful.
But to all crammers out there, CRAMMING DOES NOT WORK IN VCE. Simply because there is that much content that you NEED to give yourself a good amount of time to go through everything. VCE does not reward students who work effectively for short bursts of time. Instead, it rewards those who work hard and smart consistently throughout the year.

So while cramming might work in Yr 9/10. I reckon building better study habits is probably for beneficial for you in the long-term.

Another Realisation
Being part of the AN community is great. But I feel like being surrounded by so many high-achieving students, seeing so many 45's and 50's in peoples signatures has fooled me into thinking that it's easy to do well in VCE and that it's easy to score highly. Reality check: it's not. It will take a lot of hard work and at the end of the day If I'm not willing to put in the hard yards the results won't follow.

It was what I was aiming to get done today. Usually I set a timer for like 35 mins etc or however long I think a task will take me to keep me on track.
