Title: DETAILED: Elizabeth Blackburn School of Sciences Entrance [Yr 11&12] Guide 2020
Post by: Di.dact on January 29, 2018, 09:25:58 pm
Updated 2020 guide to Elizabeth Blackburn School of Sciences. Student's perspective. The school/program went through a rebranding so now called Elizabeth Blackburn Sciences.

Exam Date: ??

Hey guys, I am a year 11 student at EBSS in 2018. I will be splitting this guide into 4 parts so feel free to skip to the ones you’re interested in.

1.    EBSS as a whole, what, how, experience so far and why you should come.
2.    Test guide and thoughts
3.    Interview guide/tips
4.    Application for year 12

Elizabeth Blackburn School of Sciences is a 'selective school' with a heavy emphasis on science-related VCE subjects. EBSS only facilitates year 11&12’s. So, it’s basically a 'VCE selective school'. One thing to note is that there is a compulsory subject that all students must complete in year 11; ‘Extended Investigation’. Note, if applying for year 12 Extended Investigation is not compulsory. I would recommend that if you want to attend you must be prepared to do EI or at least be prepared to carry your score with the other subjects provided. EI classes have been quite interesting, after a term of devising a question and completing a SAC, EI provides free periods if your SAC is prepared(all sacs are take home and hand in), not really any homework other than work on research and classes are just their to receive feedback so lots of leeway is given. EI is probably not for everyone so the subject might be a deal breaker for those wanting to attend. Another note is the subjects. It is compulsory to do Math Methods & Specialist, 2 sciences, Extended Investigation and a choice of any English even English as an additional language [After experiencing a semester of EBSS, subjects selection is very interchangeable with the exception of the compulsory EBSS subjects; Psychology, I.T. Informatics, humanities and language-based subjects are also offered as 3/4's] . In addition, these subjects are taught in a different way. The teaching system as a whole is quite different from other schools. Students learn from lectures and come in casual clothes. The year levels are also quite small ranging from 40-80. This year only 40~ students chose to enter in year 11 with some leaving after learning about EI. But, the school has the capacity to hold 100 students per year level. So, if you have a group of friends from other schools wanting to learn science this might be your gold mine. The location of the school is in Parkville, behind Royal Melbourne Hospital and across the road from Melbourne University. The transport to and from the school might take time out of your VCE studies so if you’re not able to make that adjustment it wouldn’t be worth attending. I devised some questions you should ask yourself before applying.

•    Am I willing to do Extended Investigation? Please read the VCAA study design before answering this question
•    Will I be able to cope with the subjects?
•    Will the travel time be worth?

If you answered yes to all the questions I’d highly recommend that you apply. However, if you said no to either it might not be advisable, but if you’re willing no one is stopping you.

Exam Guide:
There are 5 parts to the exam; verbal reasoning, science reasoning, reading comprehension, mathematics and writing.

Verbal reasoning: [50 questions, 30 minutes] understanding of syntax, vocabulary and grammar as a whole are the main topics for the exam.
Science reasoning: [30 questions, 30 minutes] mainly biology and chemistry, includes a bit of physics and psychology. I recommend completing the pearson 9&10 textbooks. Note: Exact same exam as year 11 JMSS exam so if you happen to be applying for both, it's the exact same.
Reading Comprehension: [40 questions, 30minutes] grammar analysis, punctuation, analysing text. I recommend just completing reading comprehension books to revise your knowledge.
Mathematics: [60 questions, 30 minutes] quadratics, trigonometry, nonlinear and linear concepts, proportion, geometry, circle geometry and mensuration. I'd recommend having the knowledge for each of these topics.
Writing: [15 minutes] topic; What do you want to do in the future, why and how can EBSS assist? They also included a picture of Elizabeth Blackburn and information about her life and achievements.

My results: 1 superior VR, 2 above averages for RC&M and 1 high average for science. I have no clue what happened to the writing assessment, it wasn’t even mentioned in the interview. Still, it’s probably a determining factor for an interview as some people did not get any superiors.

How I prepared:
Science - I did the JMSS entrance exam (it’s a really good practice exam).
Mathematics - learnt all the year 10 material
Verbal Reasoning and Reading Comprehension - practice tests online (edutest)
Writing - Referred to the 2015 EBSS guide and prepared 3 paragraphs. There are only 15 minutes so practice writing your paragraphs at that time.

Interview:
After the exam all applicants will be emailed their results and whether they got an interview. Those who do receive an email will receive an interview time and subject selection sheet. Please fill it in before coming to the interview, if you’re learning a language outside of school please write it on the form. Clothing should either be your school uniform or something casual.
The interview consisted of 5 questions:
1.    Why do you want to come to EBSS?
2.    What field of science are you interested in?
3.    What subjects are you taking? - refer to subject selection sheet
4.    What Extended Investigation topic do you think you’ll do?
5.    Do you have any questions?

Try to get the interviewer to write a lot about you to prepare a minimum of 2 sentences for each question. Prepare for each of these questions especially 4, they might ask you “Why did you choose that question?”

Year 12 Update:
After communicating with a year 12 student who entered EBSS in year 12, he said the exams were easy. Most likely the same topics for year 11 for both the maths & reading comprehension. The writing tasks are also exactly the same for year 10 & 11, so prepare for the one above. Additionally, quite a few students got into EBSS in year 12, 2018 at least 3. However, for those applying for year 12 in 2019, they’ll most likely accept up to 20 students based on the small amount this year. Important: Extended Investigation is not compulsory in year 12, but your unit 1&2 subjects must align with EBSS subjects.
Once again, good luck to all those studying for the exam in July. I hope to see many of you at the symposium :).
Shoutout to my fellow classmates for any confirmations.
Thank you so much for reading this guide, feel free to message me if you have any concerns and I look forward to meeting some of you in 2019. I’ll try my best to reply to as many comments and concerns.

Ok so my test for this is in a year and 3 months and I’m not motivated or smart do u think I will get in if I start it study everyday and become smarter. Should I also do the normal edu kingdom plz reply. Also I’m going to buy the year 10 Cambridge book is that going to help

Hi Reeva,
This is Di.dact and I'd say you don't have to study that hard for EBSS. However, it depends on the number of people who apply. For my year level 120~ students applied about 80 got an interview and only 40 decided to go through with the course. The EBSS exam is fairly simple if you understand all of the year 10 concepts for both Maths and English (grammar and understanding), so I highly recommend that you complete the Cambridge book, but an even better option would be to start the Methods 1&2 Cambridge book if possible. The EBSS writing is the main part of the examination which most likely determines if you receive an interview, so focus on establishing a prepared writing piece based on the topic stated above. Another note is a lot of the students who are attending EBSS did not get superiors on the exams but it is still important to aim for at least high averages. Also, a lot of people are thrown off by the subject Extended Investigation so a fair warning would be too look the subject up beforehand so that you're not shocked by the symposium (day where successful applicants visit the school and see what the year 11 student's are researching, through oral presentations and posters). Anyway, you should be fine if you're using Atarnotes in year 9 and are going to do the year 10 book. I personally, found tutors like James An and Edukingdom useless but if you want extra practice you should go for it.
Sorry for the late reply and I hope you study hard and get into EBSS!
Regards, Di.dact

Thank you so much for this info I am planning to study for this since is I did not get through JMSS for yr 10. EBSS seems like it will really help me in future and thanks to your info I now know what to tackle. Do you know approximately how many students try out each for yr 11 each year?

I counted 13 rows and 16 columns (but it also included the year 12s) so there were like 170 ish people this year. This is probably due to the fact that the school heavily advertised itself. (i saw an ad on dream league lmao)

Hi Reeva,

A solid 6 months of studying will definitely get you into EBSS. But, it depends on the quality of your studying. As long as you are able to pull off a superior on the exams you should be able to make it into the school. Study well!!

Hey,
I was wondering if EBS offers VCE art subjects like Vis Com. The answer is probably gonna be no but I want to know for sure. Also, what's the schedule like at EBS? Do you still have assemblies and stuff? If you do, do you have assembly with UHS kids?

Thanks

Hi,
The EBS program does not offer Vis Com, but is able to be undertaken with the UHS students. Just note it down on your subject selection sheet and discuss it with the interviewer and you should be fine. I think the only requirement to be an EBS student is atleast 3 subjects within the program. As some of the students do not do specialist and only a single science. The EBS schedule is made up of 6 periods a day. No homeroom and no assemblies. Just classes and breaks. There are more opportunities for events and competitions within the mathematics, science and IT fields. But, other than that we just attend classes rock up in casual clothes and study for VCE. I hope this answers your concerns. Please feel free to direct message or leave a comment if you have any further queries.

Kind regards,
Di.dact

You aren't guaranteed to get into EBS even if you get an interview but I think you have a better chance of getting in. I think it also depends on the subjects you choose and how the interview goes.

GL in the interview this week!

Hi,

Hey,
If you are confident in your abilities to do further 3&4 in year 11 go for it. But, you will most likely have to forfeit unit 1&2 for a science subject. Please note that further mathematics is undertaken with the UHS students. If you have any more subject queries feel free to ask and I'd recommend discussing it with the interviewer as they will further explain the system and subjects.

Hey,

Thanks for replying to me. I was also wondering what kind of EI questions EBS students are doing this year. I'm trying to get ideas for my own EI questions that I want to do next year if I get in.

Thanks

Hi,
The types of questions students are doing range from physics, biology and psychology topics, but any topic related to the sciences is doable. The Psychology and Biology topics are the most popular with my cohort. My topic is "Does the amount of social media notifications affect the amount of time spent on phones, for teenagers?" and i'm doing it in a survey format (Please help me out by completing my survey link: https://goo.gl/forms/FnSi22A0mhHV5HoQ2[1-2min]). Other students are measuring the sediment within concrete, testing alginate balls in certain conditions, measuring mercury within fish, researching the physics behind trains,  etc. Please note that your question at the interview does not have to be as detailed as the students undertaking extended investigation have had 7 months to work on their projects. I'll give some insight from my interview, during the interview I briefly outlined that I'd like to explore possible cloning techniques with prehistoric animals. The interviewer might ask why, and to what scale. But, note that the topic stated at the interview is not one that you have to stick with next year. They just want to assess whether you're enthusiastic about the program. If you'd like me to go more in depth about Extended Investigations questions and Extended Investigation as a whole please leave your feedback and I will respond.

Kind Regards,
Di.dact

Hi,
I decided to discuss potential interview tips with my fellow classmates and all we came up with was to be enthusiastic and prepare for the questions I laid out on the guide. Remember to smile and be confident. It's okay if you're a bit nervous everyone is like that in the beginning. Just start speaking but remember to smile every now and then. Also, show interest in the program when they ask "Do you have any questions?". I think this section will separate you from the rest if you have genuine questions of interest. Last year, I was discussing the interview with another applicant via atarnotes and sadly, they were unsuccessful due to nervousness and lack of preparation. Please note, that receiving an interview does not guarantee entry within the program. But, if spots are available you might get contacted at the start of next year (happened to some of my classmates).

Thanks

Quick Update:
Apparently there is an activity occuring between 2:25-3:15pm for potential new students. So the interview/selection process will be different this year. I got this information from a teacher hosting the event.

I did the interview and group activities today and it went quite well. There were 3 activities and they were sorta easy to do. I did better than I thought I would do in the interview. I think I answered the questions pretty well and the atmosphere was really chill. Can't wait for the results to come through. I hope I got in.

Announcement: There were 2 interview dates. One last friday and one today. So to the people that were present today, the list presented did contain a full list of applicants. I don’t know the exact amount of applicants on friday’s date. But, I hope everyone did as well as they could and are able to do well in their upcoming year 11&12. No matter the outcome, I hope all goes well for everyone.

Congratulations to the both of you. I hope everyone else also received the results they expected. If you didn't receive a response yet give it some time. As some people may decline. I hope to see everyone at the symposium :).

Hi, Specialist mathematics is not compulsory in EBS. So, if you have any issues please email the school and they will change your subjects.

Hi,
I was wondering what facilities are like in EBSS? I really have limited knowledge (Even the pictures from the website doesn't show much) as to what facilities EBSS has and how big is the building itself. Also, I wanted to clarify whether the interview will be held as a group and then 1 on 1? Any advise if group interview were held?

ok idk if anyone's gonna see this but

i'm sitting the exam next week (i know, what a great time to start contemplating my preparation) and i'm  a little unsure on the essay part of the exam. Previous students, can you prompt me on what to expect?
i am the worst person when it comes to writing so do you have tips for people sitting the exam?

Thanks

Hi!

I’m also sitting for the EBS test (which is in 9 DAYS🤯), and I’m HIGH key stressing out.. This is mainly because I haven’t prepared that much for the exam + I’m especially nervous for the maths and science reasoning sections. How about you guys? What kind of studying/preparation have you all completed (if any)? And, what are you most nervous for?

Anyhow, let me know if you’ll be at the exam next Saturday! And more importantly, if you are, would you happen to know what time, and exactly where the exam will be held? My parents and I haven’t received any emails/notifications with these details from Edutest, nor from the school. 😐

Cheers
Yianna :)

i'll be doing the exam as well :), i'm pretty sure they will send the information about the exam (like the time and where it will be held) next week because the closing date for the enrollments is on the 22nd.

I feel like i'm not studying ENOUGH. I've just been learning the math topics from the yr 10 curriculum and completing the ICAS science paper. I'm most nervous for the science reasoning and reading comp :/

How have you been studying for it?

(sorry if it doesn't make sense, im writing this before class starts :) )

Don’t worry! You made total sense :)

To be honest, I think you’re doing better than me (in terms of studying). I was pretty consistent with my maths practice a few months ago, but then semester 1 exams came and went, as well as holidays too, and I’ve kinda fallen of the study bandwagon! BUT!!! I am getting back into it (I know, like 7 days before the exam😱), and trying my hardest keep at it.

At the moment, I’m also using the ICAS practice exams/past exams for science and maths practice, and just going over the year 10 curriculum.
For the English components of the exam, I’m just trying to learn as much new vocabulary as I can, doing a little bit of grammar and reading comprehension exercises and... that’s about it! Oh and, I’m also in the process of writing a draft for the writing part of the ebs exam (why I want to get in, how will the school help me, etc), as I’ve heard that they’ll be testing us on this, (like they did for the kids last year), however it’s not 100% confirmed.

For anyone stressing out... despite that our exam is right around the corner and some of us may have not studied as much as we would’ve liked to, or at all 😅, I think we need to just sit back and take a deep breath. Whether we get into ebs or not, ultimately, our education/careers/futures haven’t come to a crumbling end :)
Personally, until the exam date, I am going study hard, everyday, try not fill myself with worrying thoughts, and, I’m also going to get enough sleep!

Good luck everyone 😊

Hi!

Here are the links to the ICAS papers I studied:
https://www.unswglobal.unsw.edu.au/hub/educational-assessments/reach-and-icas-assessments-mathematics-sample-questions/
https://www.unswglobal.unsw.edu.au/hub/educational-assessments/reach-and-icas-assessments-english-sample-questions/
https://www.unswglobal.unsw.edu.au/hub/educational-assessments/reach-and-icas-assessments-science-sample-questions/

Unfortunately there are only about 5 sample questions per paper, per year level (I looked at Yr 9 - 12 papers). I wasn't surprised to find out that there were only 5 q's in each - it's simply because these "practice tests" are free (almost all others aren't).

Enjoy :)

So if you scrolled all the way down on those websites, you would have seen a number of papers lettered from A to around J. The different letters correspond to a different year level, and hence, a different level of difficulty (for each sample test). Try and study letters G,H,I and J (years 9,10,11 and 12), as these are the hardest ones there. I assume that the EBSS exam will provide similarly structured questions as the ones in these sample papers, and the level of difficulty will be kind of like papers H, I and J (I think????).

Hi!
My understanding is that if you are currently in Yr 11, you can only apply for a spot in EBSS for Yr 12 (for you, that will be in 2020). I’m not exactly sure if you would be allowed to repeat Yr 11. Perhaps you could do that??? But unfortunately, the EBSS is no longer taking applications to sit for the exam - they closed last Friday (I think).
Hope this helped :)

Well, @Stormbreakerthroughthat99.95ATAR, I just wanted to say that whoever doesn't make it into EBS, don't lose hope. What your ATAR is, is determined by  your hard work, passion, resilience and will. If you are a good student (or willing to become one) then schools don't matter whatsoever. Just always know that 90% of your VCE outcome will be determined by you and that your school and teachers only affect 10%. I wish you all the best of luck for your future!
It is fine if you do not make it, life isn't just EBS, there are so many better opportunities out there so pls don't stress or beat yourself up over it :heart_exclamation:

You just need to be confident and know what to say when they question you. Legit I never made it to the interview stage for any school I applied for. Looks like the streak continues for me.

idk who you are, but please don't think like that. Your path doesn't end till you - um - die.
Having failed so many selective entry tests before, I sort of understand where you're coming from, but  going to a selective school isn't the end of the world. It might help a little, but the amount of effort you put in will affect your ATAR more than anything else.
Hope you have a great future in general. :)

Average on science reasoning
 High Average on everything else

surprised I even got an interview offer but I ain't complaining.

Edit: Also I felt really good about my writing piece, so that may have been a major contributing factor.

1 above average for reading comprehension and 3 superiors for the rest.
Btw who managed to finish the reading comprehension? It was basically impossible because of the lengthy essays and time restrictions, I 50/50 guessed 10 questions after skimming the essay.

Hey everyone!
I did the EBS test and got an interview which is next Tuesday at 1:30 for me. I have a couple of questions for past students. Is it a group interview and then 1 on 1 and if it is what happens in the group interview and how big are the groups. Also I'm a bit stressing out because I have no idea what EI topic to do and I've heard they ask you that in the interview. I know I want to do something to with chemistry but I just don't know what. Any help with that? And anyone know who the teachers that interview are, I go to Uni High so I might know them. Finally I've heard knowing facts about Bio21 and other science facilities nearby is good so anyone know some good ones and how to utilize them in the interview?

Thanks :)
Ali

Yes, the writing is what determines whether you get an interview or not since it is marked by EBS themselves instead of EduTest.

We have interviews at the exact same time!

I only got a superior in verbal reasoning and science reasoning. High average in Reading comprehension(how the fuck could anyone read of that so fast!) and an above average in mathematics. I'm extremely happy EBSS doesn't check reports because my teachers wrote a full on diss-track on me, I'm sure thats the reason i didn't get into JMSS.

Yes, you should, it will add to your credentials and merits. You may even impress the interviewer, but all in all just bring as much as you can in order to stand out from the rest. They prefer all-well rounders over academic blobs.

Guys should I go again next year?

Yes definitely, I will try my very best to support you as much as I can.  ;)

Huh

I sorta disagree specifically because they haven't requested it.
If they wanted to see your achievements they would mention it, wouldn't they?

The interviews are more to find out what type of person you are, and how devoted you are to STEM and succeeding in VCE.

idk but i know that 38 people will guarantee not get accepted due to 5% rule *cough *cough, the 40 or so UHS students who sat the exam. The rest are pretty much guarantee accepted as long as we prepare for the interview and don't act anti-social during the group activities. Also prepare an EI question, it can be changed at any time. I know for a fact at least a few people will decline (like the people who got into jmss for example) Gl everyone.

That sounds great, but I got a low average so that will impact my chances I think.

BTW when we do the group work activities before our interview, make sure you look like your collaborating! Even if you don't know that answers to questions or shit just make sure you're collaborating with your peers!

Good luck everyone  :D

I also recommend u getting some sleep the nights leading to the interview  :D

Hey guys, for EBSS, will we need to learn about calculus, like full on or just basic pre-calc knowing about differentiation and integration.

And for science, for physics, will we need to learn about special relativity?? Thanks a million for your help!

Ngl the science test is not really something that you can study for, other then some practise tests. As for the maths I didn’t find it that difficult, I think it’s made up of year 10 (especially quadratics) and maybe a few year 11 concepts

If I remember correctly that question wasn't that much about pulleys, but more about gears, and how if a gear has two contrasting forces of different directions it will not turn.

Thanks :) so far, I feel like I am fine with tests, just need to revise a bit more that is all. As for the tests, I probably need to practice for speed, and need to think about structure and content for writing.

Edit: (Just editing to not cramp the recent posts with replies full of this topic :) ) Hypebeast, what is the essay about? Since u found it ez, can u help me with the content for the essay?? ;) Much appreciated :)

That's a bit too advanced for the entrance tests for year 11 entry. From what I could recall, the tests consist neither calculus nor special relativity, so if you already have prior knowledge on the topics, you will find the tests a piece of cake.

Ngl, I do , but as a matter of fact, since they are not gonna ask those, It is gonna be a waste. Will there be matrices, and difficult functions, like hybird functions, and will there also be like u know, inverse trigonometric functions (secant, cosecant and cotangent). I know I am pressing this a bit too much  :P, (sorry hehehe ..) what topics will there be for science? Thank you so much guys, ur all lifesavers :)

what's everyone wearing to their interview?

My interview is on during production week so I'm coming in formal blacks or the production shirt so I don't have to change. Currently deciding.
UHS kind of have to come in casual, so you wouldn't stand out if you did that too. After all, when in Rome, do as the Romans do!

Also, what is everyone doing for subject selections? Aaaaah! The subjects I've already done and the subjects I am planning to do are going to fuck with the timetabling so bad.

idk but i know that 38 people will guarantee not get accepted due to 5% rule *cough *cough, the 40 or so UHS students who sat the exam. The rest are pretty much guarantee accepted as long as we prepare for the interview and don't act anti-social during the group activities. Also prepare an EI question, it can be changed at any time. I know for a fact at least a few people will decline (like the people who got into jmss for example) Gl everyone.

Yes thats me XD, I got into JMSS so I will decline EBS if I get the offer. Parents are forcing me to do the interview whelp

Sorry to hear you did not get an interview  :(
I did not either, but we always have next year and a chance for a late offer. In my opinion, I suggest you let Ebs go for now, since it looks like chances are low for a late offer.

Where does it say there is a 5% rule? I thought 5% rule was only for MGHS/MHS/SCHS/NHS?

Ye I am curious about that too... I just heard it from Jayce that the school has a 5% rule. I mean, does it even matter, seeing that they only accept max 100 students per year?

It was more straightforward than I anticipated. In fact, mine took less than 20 minutes.

We did a group activity (which was more of an icebreaker, actually, since they didn't seem to pay too much attention to it) and then had a one on one session with one of the teachers. The experience comparable course counselling - we just discussed my subjects and E.I. rather than any out of the box concepts.
Ye my interview also mirrors that... but idk I brought my achievements with me so the principal talked about my achievements too. I hope I get in, for some reason I'm having doubts

HELLO GUYS, HOW DID UR INTERVIEWS GO?!! What extended investigation topic did you talk about? What subjects did you choose for next year? What questions did you guys ask? Who did you get for your interviews?

ALL THE BEST OF LUCK TO EVERYONE WHO HAD INTERVIEWS, I HOPE THAT YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE!!
and to those who did not get in...
Well, I just wanted to say that whomever doesn't make it into EBS, don't lose hope. What your ATAR is, is determined by  your hard work, passion, resilience and will. If you are a good student (or willing to become one) then schools don't matter whatsoever. Just always know that 90% of your VCE outcome will be determined by you and that your school and teachers only affect 10%. It is fine if you do not make it, life isn't just about EBS, there are so many better opportunities out there so pls don't stress or beat yourself up over it:heart_exclamation:
I wish you all the very best of luck for your future!!

My interview went kinda bad tbh... i memorized everything I wanted to say before and then as soon as I walked into the EBS building I completely forgot everything. I decided to flex a bit of my chemistry knowledge and mixed up endothermic and endothermic reactions (exothermic reactions have more energy stored in reactants than product but i said the opposite and looked really dumb) Looking back now all I can do is cringe, I'm not a shy person but for some reason i felt something I've never felt before... nervous. In the back of my mind all I was think was "this is your last chance, don't stuff up" and I kept stuffing up! But maybe i'm just overreacting and maybe they didn't care I hope. Man... I'm freaking out a little lot.

Trust me, you're not alone. I feel like the exam and interview itself are less scary than the waiting period. EBS results come out very quickly compared to Mac Rob or JMSS, but the waiting is agonising.

I can't do well at my current school.. it has no chemistry teacher so i can't do chemistry and my biology teacher is just a PE teacher....
I'm also going to be forced to do religion and society. Nobody in my cohort wants to do specialist maths so i can't do that either.

What school do you go to? Also have you tried applying for a new public school or a private school?

My parents are fed up... and yeah, I'm sure there is no chemistry teacher. My school requires a minimum of 5 students doing a subject for it to be taught and I'm the only one who wants to do spesh... I don't know what to do anymore... I can't do the subjects I want, I have no friends, and my parents think I'm a failure...

Have you tried distance education? You can do vce subjects online. Or maybe convince your parents to let you, give them so time first xD. My parents are fed up with me too, but after a while they chill down. Also there are late offers so maybe you might get an offer if enough people reject.

Keep your head up high and most importantly prove your parents wrong! ( best feeling in the world, trust me)

So what if you didn't get in? Work hard again and come out successful, but don't give up and go into a negative state of mind cause that is really unhealthy for you and won't get you anywhere.

Good Luck

Also Congrats to everyone that got into Elizabeth Blackburn School of Science!

 :)

Well done for applying for EBSS. It takes guts and determination for each student to have even sat that entrance examination (no matter the outcome).

Regarding your current situation, not all hope is lost! Perhaps you could apply for another school near you, that offers your preferred VCE subjects.
For example, what about Uni High? Even though their applications for VCE placement are considered very carefully by their enrolment committee, (and hence, no applicant is guaranteed a spot), I’m sure that your great enthusiasm and dedication to your school studies would impress them! Even if not at Uni high, at least at another school. I think you should give it a shot (especially because it sounds like your current school cannot offer you what you truly want and NEED, out of your high school education).

Anyhow, good luck with everything, and try to stay positive nonetheless :)

I'm pretty sure UHS only accept local students within a certain radius, but I completely agree with Yianna in terms of moving schools. I feel like staying in one school that doesn't enable you to pick the subjects you want will ultimately backfire. Moving schools can not only get you the 'subjects that you want', but furthermore can give you a fresh new start in terms of building your social relationships and expanding your friendship circles.

Fair enough but why do you want to do it so bad? Jayce Batallones went to EBS and got a 72.9 atar. And ebs is not as prestigious as other selective schools such as Melbourne High. I don’t see the point in trying.

I never said I wanted to do it "really badly" although, for people who go to a less prestigious school than uhs and want to do EI in year 12, it is definitely worth it. (doing EI in yr 11 decreases the workload in yr 12). EBS isn't for everyone so there may not be a point in trying for you, but that doesn't mean everyone else feels the same.
using Jayce as an example isn't a very good choice either, there are heaps of people who went to ebs and got an atar higher than 90

Hey is the John Monash Exam the same as the EBSS exam?
They are both an educational academically selective and specialist secondary day school, JMSS is an actual school and EBSS is a program in UHS.
I do not have any experience with JMSS or EBSS, but these are the examination components for each entrance exam. As you can see both schools assess students' ability and acheivement differently, but they do share some common sections such as Science Reasoning and Mathematics.

JMSS Entrance Exam:
- Science Reasoning

- Numerical Reasoning

- Mathematics

- Scientific Analysis and Reporting

- Science interest and communication

EBSS Entrance Exam:
- Verbal Reasoning

- Science Reasoning

- Reading Comprehension

- Mathematics

- Writing piece - about why you are deserving a position in ebs

Please correct me if I am wrong. And take this with a grain of salt as I do not having any experience with the JMSS and EBSS admissions tests.

Appears that the JMSS test writing includes science report and science writing. I'm really suitable to the JMSS test and got passed it last year, but I failed interview and I'm too far so no attempting this year.
What do you mean " about a position in EBS" ?

I’ll try my best to reply to as many comments and concerns.

typically you can do a max of 5 subjects, including any uni extension or VET. If you're doing 2 or 3 3/4s in year 11 (and achieve a certain threshold set by ebs/ your coordinator), you get away with 4 subjects in Year 12.

Yes you can drop a 1/2 and pick up a different 3/4 if you wish to.

i was really debating whether or not to try out for ebs as, if i were to pass the exam, i would have to study ei which i am really anxious about. i heard that spesh was also compulsory in year 11 and personally, i think math is my weakest subject, but i also heard that i could swap out spesh for physics, if i were to do this, could I completely drop physics in year 12? (anything math related makes me gag, but i’m still planning to study methods) thoughts? or should i just stay at my current school?
again thanks for your help!!

I did ei this year and LOVED it. If you're going into ebs it should be with the intention of loving ei, because that's the whole point of the school. I found all other subjects to be relatively similar to other schools except they teach in a lecture theatre (but still treat you the same as classroom students, really).

In year 11 they make you do spesh, it's rare for them to let people move out because they want us to "try the whole experience" but you pick your subjects for year 12. the physics and 3/4 biology classes run at the same time  so you could just do biology/chem/spesh/methods/eng/ei in year 11 and drop spesh for something else in year 12 (or continue with biology if you do 1/2 in Year 11).

Personally I'm meh about moving. I wanted to do ei and eng lang and my old school didn't offer them and distance ed seemed too annoying so I just moved schools. All other subjects are taught like any other govt school but it depends on what school you're coming from, mine didn't differ that much in rank and median ATAR but I moved anyway.

All other subjects are taught like any other govt school but it depends on what school you're coming from, mine didn't differ that much in rank and median ATAR but I moved anyway.
i’d say the only con about my school is being complied to study all units of vce religion, otherwise it isn’t entirely that much of a pain. thanks for the insight! i had no idea i had the option to do bio 1/2 in year 11, if i do make it in i’ll just those subjects and drop spesh in year 12.

Thanks again! i hope year 12 treats you well!

Wow, as someone who went to a small rural school in the middle of nowhere which accepted basically everyone these entrance requirements seem crazy.

I sat them a while back but I think the year 10 jmss entry (which I sat in y9) was of similar difficulty to the year 11 ebs. Have a good hold of your maths and science reasoning and you should be good. I think jmss emphasises interviews a lot more than ebs - if you're in for an ebs interview it's very unlikely you'll be rejected unless your subjects clash
