Title: Changes to the HHD study design in 2018
Post by: gisele on May 01, 2017, 05:18:13 pm
Hey guys, as you may or may not be aware, the new HHD study design is out. There have been some changes, so to make it easier for prospective students, I’ve gone through and noted all of the major differences! ;D

Completely new content:
Unit 3 AOS 1
Spoiler
- Optimal health/wellbeing as a resource (individually, nationally, globally)

Unit 3 AOS 2
Spoiler
- The concept of ‘old’ public health
- The National Disability Insurance Scheme
- Health promotion specifically in regard to smoking, road safety and skin cancer (replacing NHPAs)
- Initiatives to improve Indigenous health

Unit 4 AOS 1
Spoiler
- Implications on health from global trends

Unit 4 AOS 2
Spoiler
- Ways individuals can take social action to improve health

Completely scrapped content:
Unit 3 AOS 1
Spoiler
- Determinants of health (not sure if 100% gone, or de-emphasised and changed to biological, sociocultural and environmental)
- NHPAs and nutrition :(

Unit 3 AOS 2
Spoiler
- VicHealth
- Roles of the government
- Values that underpin the Australian health system

Unit 4 AOS 1
Spoiler

Unit 4 AOS 2
Spoiler
- Sustainable human development: interrelationships between health, human development and sustainability. This is not specified in the new study design, which is odd since this links everything together and is a massive area of the current course (and it’s often a 6-mark question) – so perhaps just less weighted.
- Role of the United Nations

Additions to key knowledge:
Unit 3 AOS 1
Spoiler
- Addition of emotional and spiritual to dimensions of health
- Explaining the dynamic and subjective nature of health

Unit 3 AOS 2
Spoiler
- Promoting healthy eating: addition of explaining WHY it is difficult to bring about changes to dietary habits

Unit 4 AOS 1
Spoiler

Unit 4 AOS 2
Spoiler

Removed from key knowledge:
Unit 3 AOS 1
Spoiler

Unit 3 AOS 2
Spoiler

Unit 4 AOS 1
Spoiler
- Characteristics of developed and developing countries
- Perhaps mortality strata

Unit 4 AOS 2
Spoiler

Other changes:
Unit 3 AOS 1
Spoiler
- WHO prerequisites moved from Unit 3 AOS 2 --> AOS 1 (now a larger part of the course)
- Old study design: solely on Australia’s health; new study design on global health as well

Unit 3 AOS 2
Spoiler

Unit 4 AOS 1
Spoiler
- Factors contributing to similarities/differences between health status of countries – VCAA has changed the given factors

Unit 4 AOS 2
Spoiler
- SDGs: moved from Unit 4 AOS 1 --> AOS 2, and changes in the specific SDGs of focus (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 16 --> 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 13), with greater emphasis now on SDG 3
- Aid programs now address the SDGs (the old study design focused on literacy, food security, HIV/AIDS and malaria, immunisation, safe water and sanitation)

Amazing post, gisele!

I can't believe VCAA removed the NHPAs. :(

I sort of wish we studied the National Disability Insurance Scheme, though. That sounds interesting. ;D

I can't believe they are removing the determinants. That was what health was all about as well as the NHPA

Oooh thanks so much for this, I've been really interested in what was going to happen!

I reserve judgement till I've examined it more closely.
