Incorrect statement of study scores:
« on: January 04, 2020, 08:05:07 am »

My statement of study scores just arrived and I have a quick question:

according to VCAA they state that 95% of standardised scores lie between -2.0 and 2.0 with a mean of zero and sd of 1 (normal distribution basically)

my results in a particular subject with an enrolment of approx 1750~2000 students has received a raw score of 44 with a weighted total of 1.33...

this includes one moderated sac result of 98/100 which had a standardised score of 1.5 (suggesting that this score isn't even two standard deviations from the mean, which is odd bc this same moderated sac mark in English (98/100) had a standardised score of 1.91 and 2.1 in each unit (received a 48). If I am not mistaken, a raw 44 in subject with enrolments greater than 1000 students is in the top 3%ish therefore how would a weighted standardised score of 1.33 even yield a 44? has something gone wrong on VCAA's end?

here's a summary:
U3.     87/100      0.96     0.24
U4.     98/100      1.51     0.378
EXAM 144/160.   1.44     0.719 (bear in mind that usually 9% of students get A+ hence the 1.44, so how does a 98/100 moderated sac score even receive merely a 1.51)

PS I'm very happy with my score but this error has me unsettled. Do I deserve a lower study score or a higher one if it is an error, I have no idea.

I had a weighted total of 1.806671 for a 50 in Further Maths. I don't think it's an error.

As far as I know, there's more that goes into the study score than even what we get on the statement of study score, so unless the GA's or question marks had an issue with them in your opinion, I wouldn't worry about it.

I may have misread, but what subject is this for?

The weighted standardised score is the combination of 3 normally distributed scores. If each student received the exact same standardised score for each GA, then you would assume that the weighted standardised score would be normally distributed N~(0,1). If these scores were completely independent, then you could calculate the expected spread (quite tight). However these scores are dependent - higher scoring students in SAC’s will tend to score higher on the exam. This means that there is some variation - therefore a tighter spread than N~(0,1), but not as tight as if they were independent. Therefore a 1.33 weighted standardised score does not seem out of the ordinary to receive a 44.

Assuming this is global politics - the sac/exam scores correlate quite well to the study score so I don't think there is a mistake made.

I didn't realise this, but if it is, I also did GloPol in 2019! By that balance, your numbers are a slight bit higher than mine for my 41, so it makes sense. Maybe you were on the lower end of 44 (eg. 43.5-43.6) and it went to a 44?

Keep in mind the sharp increase as you go 45+, those numbers increase very quickly, and even though we get the statement of marks, I think there's other factors that go into our study scores that wouldn't be easily comprehensible from that table.

Thanks everyone. It feels so much better knowing that its correct. Extra context lol... my English weighted was 2.11 something like that so I used what little maths knowledge I had and used the 2 sd from mean is 95% rule and thought that being in top 2.5% would mean a weighted total of more than 2.00 no matter the subject. I realise my mistake now, thanks for the help! (I really thought this was the one moment where methods statistics would be useful to me).
